PRESIDENT’S REPORT G’day fellow Subi fans, We’ve decided to cancel this month’s General Meeting owing to a case of bad timing, but to make up for it we’ll be having a sausage sizzle immediately before the January meeting. The Christmas Party at Double Island Point was a huge success - especially thanks to Leon and his father Nuku and the rest of Leon’s family for organising the hangi what a feast! There’s a busy programme of events in the coming months, including a number of club favourites. New Years Eve at Bribie starts off the year with a bang or two of fireworks - it should be a fun night. Night drives are not a regular occurrence on our calender, so the night trip to Mt Mee, with dinner beforehand at the Dayboro pub, will be an educational experience for many. It sounds to me like a much better way of spending a warm summer’s evening than sitting in front of the box. Wishing you and the family all the best for Christmas and the festive season. Please take it safe on the roads when travelling so you can return home unscathed. And may the Subaru stars shine upon you. Greg Bryant SC480

ST JOHNS AMBULANCE FIRST AID COURSE/S Our clubs training officer, John McKenna, is currently looking into the possibilty of holding a St Johns Ambulance First Aid Course at the club house for anybody interested. A date hasn’t been set yet as we first need to register our interest with John. We need a minimum of 8 people to go ahead with a booking. Basic details are as follows: $130 Full Course - Senior First Aid - 15 hours (most likely over a 2 day weekend). A Senior First Aid qualification, valid for three years, is issued to successful participants. $95 Refresher Course - Senior First Aid - 8 hours. This course will update and refresh you Senior First Aid skills and renew your qualification for a further three years. NOTE: Only one Senior First Aid Refresher qualification will be issued between two Senior First Aid qualifications. I’m sure you will all agree it is definately a worthwhile way to spend a weekend in exchange for some invaluable training. Please phone John McKenna on 07-3398 3019 or 0419 652 053 as soon as you are able if you are remotely interested in attending. The sooner we are aware of numbers the sooner John can organise the training if we have enough people interested. A random date at this stage may be sometime in March. If you have never done a first aid course, have a chat to someone who has and I’m sure they’ll let you know, it’s not difficult or scary and actually can be quite fun! So give John a call.

EDITOR’S REPORT

Hi Readers, As I write my editors report, it is only one week until Christmas! I know we say it every year - but WOW, hasn’t that year passed by quick. I’d like to thank our advertisers for their continued support. A big thankyou also, to all members for their dedication and enthusiasm for their club. From the editors desk, thankyou to all who have sent submissions for the magazine. Please, keep them coming next year! Don’t forget to check out the clubs upcoming trips which are continuing over the Christmas/New Year break. First up, a trip to Bribie Island for the family on New Years Eve. The event starts at 5pm (although we’ll probably trek over a little earlier to secure our “posi”) See “What’s On” for more details. Second and last trip for the school holidays is our trip to Bargara on Friday 13th January and concluding on Sunday 15th January. Bargara is just east of Bundaburg and not far from the fabulous “Mon Repos” turtle hatchery. Bundaburg itself, of course, is the home of the famous Bundaburg Rum Distillery. Both of these are on our itinery as well as a trip to the beach for the kids and later each afternoon we have “happy hour” and a game of “Boules” at the Bargara Beach Caravan Park where we will be staying. Again, check “What’s On” for more details. Kids, have you sent your letters to Santa? If not, don’t forget to tell santa that mum or dad would probably like a new Subaru. Maybe a WRX or possibly a new Outback? What’s that you say? Have we been good? Define “good”..... Wishing everybody a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY, HEALTHY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!

SOCIAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT First off this month I wish all Club members and their families a merry and safe Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. Also, don’t forget there is no GM this month as it falls on Boxing Day. The next GM will be January and it will also be a sausage sizzle. Secondly thanks to Grant Rogers for starting off the Club year, the calender is pretty well set out for the rest of the year. But, still, if you have an idea for a trip, be it any type, let me know. Running a trip is not as hard as you may think. As we go through the year, some trips and dates may change from the future calender dates, so keep a close eye on What’s On. January is full for trips, starting off with seeing the New Year in on Bribie Island, followed by a visit to Bundaberg to see the Turtle hatchlings. The last trip for the month is a great one for new members to Condamine Gorge and the surrounding area. See you on a trip soon.

Fun Stuff EMIGRATING TO AUSTRALIA The diary of an English migrant that’s only been here a short time. Oh and by the way - Queensland has long been described as known as ‘Beautiful one Day, Perfect the next’. Obviously its not everyones cup of tea... SEPTEMBER 1ST Said goodbye to England a few weeks ago now and have been loving life in Brisbane! Now this is a city that knows how to live! Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. What a place! Watched the sunset from a deck chair on my veranda tonight, it was beautiful. I’ve finally found my home, I love it here. SEPTEMBER 13TH Really heating up now. Got to 32 today. Not a problem, live in an air-conditioned house, drive an air conditioned car to an air conditioned office. What a pleasure to see the sun every day like this. I’m turning into a sun worshipper. SEPTEMBER 30TH Had the backyard landscaped with tropical plants. What a breeze to maintain. Another scorcher today but I love it here. OCTOBER 10TH It’s not been below 30c all week. How do people get used to the heat? At least today was a bit windy but it’s taking longer than I thought to adjust to the heat and humidity. OCTOBER 15TH Fell asleep by the pool and got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body. Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. Got to respect a climate like this. OCTOBER 20TH I missed Kitty (our cat) sneaking into the car when I left this morning. By the time I got to the hot car at lunch Kitty had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag. The car now smells like Wiskettes and cat shit. Learned my lesson, no more pets in the heat. OCTOBER 25TH The wind sucks. It feels like a giant bloody blow dryer! It’s hot as hell. The home air conditioner is on the blink and the AC repairman charged $200 just to drive over and tell me he needed to order parts. OCTOBER 30TH Been sleeping outside by the pool for 3 nights now. Bloody $450,000 house and we can’t even go inside. Why did I ever come here? NOVEMBER 4TH Its 35 degrees. Finally got the air con fixed today. It cost $500 to get the temperature down to 25, but this humidity make it fell like 30! Stupid repairman, I hate this stupid place. NOVEMBER 8TH If another wise arse cracks, “Hot enough for you today?” I’m going to strangle him. Bloody heat. By the time I get to work my cars radiator was boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet and I smell like baked cat!! NOVEMBER 9TH Went out after work. Wore shorts and sat on the black leather seats in the car. I thought my arse was on fire. I lost 2 layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and my arse. Now the car smells like burnt hair, fried arse and baked cat. NOVEMBER 10TH The weather report might as well be a bloody recording. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. It’s been too hot to do anything for 2 damn months and the weatherman says it might really ‘warm up’ next week. Doesn’t it ever rain? NOVEMBER 14TH Welcome to HELL!!! Temperature got to 36 today. Now the air con has gone in my car. The repair man came to fix it and said “hot enough for you today?” My wife had to spend the $2500 house payment to bail my arse out of jail for assaulting the repairman. Bloody Brisbane. What kind of sick demented idiot would want to live here? DECEMBER 1ST WHAT??? This is the first day of Summer??? You are f***ing kidding!!!

REBUILDING OF ““THE THE O TT WAY” OTT TTW by Ron P enf old SC02 Penf enfold Part four Full open water high speed testing was undertaken in the Platypus waterhole on Neurum Ck at Neurum Creek Bush Retreat, where Pam Ottway christened the vessel the “Ottway”. Bruce and Pam and were very impressed with the boat named after them. When I first launched the “Ottway”, I checked all radio functions, everything worked as it should, but on the first high speed run the rudder link came loose and would only do wide turns to port. I could not steer the boat back to the bank. While Bruce went to fetch the rescue boat I discovered that by using the water pump and squirting water out of the forward gun, I could steer the boat back to the bank. It was noticed that at high speed the boat did not want to turn very sharp, but at low speed it turned tightly. I was not sure why, the hull is long and narrow, has a wide bow and tapers towards the stern and leans into the corners. The prop seems to cavitie on high speed turns. I asked the more experienced members of the Triple S Model Boat Club why this was happening. I was told that the full size hull had 2 or 3 motors, props and rudders and was designed primarily for high speed straight running not high speed tight turns. The model has only one motor, prop and rudder and this is why it won’t turn at high speed. I spent $250 in parts to rebuild the “Ottway” but this did not include the balsa, glue, paint, etc that I already had or the 5 channel radio. The “Ottway” will spend it’s active service under command of Captain Ron and will travel far and wide to be displayed and compete in many model boat shows here in QLD and NSW. The “Ottway” is the 15th boat in the Penfold fleet.

Minutes cont... General Business: A letter of appreciation will be sent to Brett Rogers for putting off repairing his own vehicle to help others get their vehicles ready for the Double Island Point Trip on the vehicle maintenance day. In the end he was unable to make the trip himself, as he had to work on his own vehicle. David Martin announced that Mike Collins has a customer who wants to sell a ’90 Brumby for $5000. Greg received an email from a rally driver in Greece who undertakes the Acropolis Rally. He was seeking information regarding specs and modifications for a turbo Forester. Issues surrounding the training program were raised by Charlene Lovell, who is a registered trainer. Topics such as whether the program will be compulsory for members and personal risks factors associated with 4WDing. Greg clarified that the program will be designed for ‘in house’ use only and will be tailored to be Subaru specific. The Club has a duty of care to provide training to its members. Ray mentioned that the Club can only be held responsible for circumstances arising out of its negligence or irresponsibility. A disclaimer will need to be added to Temporary Membership forms used by visitors who come on a Club trip. Rally News Vale – Subaru’s 2001World Championship driver Richard Burns sadly passed away aged 34, from a brain tumour in late November. He had 2 year battle with the disease. During his career he gained a total of 10 rally victories in WRC rounds, and he also won the 1993 British Rally Championship driving a Liberty RS Turbo for Subaru. He went on became the first and only English driver to win a World Championship crown. Re-signed for 2006 – Young Australian driver Chris Atkinson had a steep learning curve in his first year with the Subaru World Rally Team. He was able to show enough ability with his good stage times, and his 3rd and 4th places in Japan and Australia, to be re-signed with Subaru for the 2006 Championship. His bitumen specialist team mate Stephane Sarrazin has also been re-signed. WRC – Rally Australia Perth – Rd 16 – All the top teams gathered in Perth for the last rally of the year, which is noted for its narrow and slippery gravel roads. Subaru’s Petter Solberg worked his way into the lead but was forced out when he hit a kangaroo. He still had enough points to finish in 2nd place in the Championship. His young Aussie team mate Chris Atkinson overcame a bent steering arm on the first day to finish in 4th place, his 2nd top 5 finish of the year, he also set 9 fastest stage times making a total 15 for the year. In its last event before disbanding Team Subaru Australia Group N drivers Cody Crocker had problems on the first day and finished out of contention. Team mate Dean Herridge was out with engine problems on day one. Japanese Subaru driver Toshi Arai had already won the 2005 Group N title. Citroen’s 2005 World Champion Sebastien Loeb was out after running wide and hitting a tree. Former World Championship winner Colin McRae, driving for the struggling Skoda team, worked his way to as high as 2nd place but was forced out with clutch problems. The winner was Citroen’s Francis Duval making it his first outright win of his career. Positions – 1 Duval Citroen, 2 Rovenpera Mitsubishi, 3 Stohl Citroen, 4 Atkinson Subaru, 5 Galli Mitsubishi. Points – Loeb 127, Solberg 71, Gronholm 71, Gardemister 58, Martin 53. Manufacturers – Citroen 188, Peugeot 135, Ford 104, Subaru 97, Mitsubishi 76.

HEARD THE NEWS Prestigious Marketing Award – The chairman of Subaru Australia Trevor Amery has recently received the 2005 Sir Charles McGrath Award. The Australian Marketing Institute has been presenting this Award since 1976. Between 1993 and 1995 Subaru Australia was struggling with low sales, it had many different models, the Japanese yen was high and the Australian dollar was depreciating. By late 1995 Trevor and his Subaru management team took the decision to rationalise the range by dropping the front wheel drive models and sell only all wheel drive models. Also the national Dealership network was reduced by 80 to 110. The Dealers were also told not to discount the recommended retail price of the cars to help maintain their value. At that stage annual sales were around 8000, combined with the newly set up locally backed factory rally team, and selling only AWD models, sales started to increase. By the late 1990’s sales were still increasing with the success of the new models, mainly the WRX, Outback, and Forester. Now total sales this year will be around the 36,000 mark. Same car new owner – Another car has done the Club ownership rounds. This time new member Jan [Kanco] who joined with a tidy standard MY 92 Brumby fitted with a canopy. Jan was keen to set up the Brumby, but on the recent Bellthorpe trip he said he had spotted a lifted L series wagon for sale in a car yard in Capalaba. He showed us a photo on his phone and we said it was Barry Beard’s old L89 wagon that he had just traded in on his new 06 Impreza wagon. We gave Jan, Barry’s phone number so he could get more details. By the Double Island Point trip Jan had done the deal, he had also bought from Barry the 14 inch Peugeot rims and rear bar that he was keeping to sell separately. Company cars – With the current trend to 4 cylinder cars, fleets are starting to see the benefits. Septone Products our Club Presidents Greg Bryant employer have recently bought with Greg’s recommendation two Liberty 2.5 litre wagons for their Reps. Now with 4 cylinder economy, the added safety of AWD, more Liberty’s are expected to join the Septone fleet in the near future. Setting up and updating. With a good original RX Turbo as his road car, Club member Dave Gibson has recently bought and set up a 92 Liberty wagon, for off road work, with a lift kit, bigger tyres, and a snorkle. He has also recently found and bought another good original white L87 auto RX turbo for his farther to drive. Better signal – Local community TV station BRIZ 31 has recently increased their transmission signal with a new aerial. Now you can catch all your favourite 4X4 action on the 4WD TV show with a clear picture. The show times are 1.30 pm on Saturday afternoons and again on Tuesday night at 8.30 pm.
