Tackers Mission The objective of the Tackers program is to attract a significantly increased number of primary school age children to sailing, especially those who would not otherwise participate, and have them participate in an initial fun sailing experience before progressing on a pathway, to a full learn to sail program over three main levels, then non-competitive participation, and long-term club membership.

Position Description: Tackers Instructor The Tackers Instructors at each Australian Sailing Tackers Club are responsible for the delivery of the Tackers syllabus as documented in this Tackers Instructor Manual. As the key ‘face’ of Tackers at each Australian Sailing Tackers Club, the Instructor is required to fully understand the Tackers Mission and the Tackers Values and encapsulate these within the programs they run. The Instructor is responsible for leading a team of Assistant Instructors not just within the program but also with regard to the professional development of Assistant Instructors within the club. Qualifications, Skills and Experience required by Tackers Instructors: • Qualified Australian Sailing Instructor. • Have completed the Tackers Instructor Induction. • Experience in the delivery of junior sail training programs. • Ability to build rapport with club officials and Assistant Instructors. • Excellent presentation skills with particular reference to verbal communication with children. • Strong leadership capacity with regard to health and safety procedures, delivery of the Tackers program, and the guidance of Assistant Instructors. • An appreciation of the long-term development of juniors within sailing.

Tackers Instructors are responsible for: • Participants having fun. • Communicating with the Tackers Club Leader regarding lists of participants registered for each Tackers program in order that a register be produced prior to commencement of the program. • Working in conjunction with the Assistant Instructors to pack away the boats following each Tackers session. All equipment needs to be accounted for at the end of the session. • Monitoring the condition of the equipment and reporting any problem(s) to the club and/or the Tackers Club Leader. • Making an assessment of the prevailing weather conditions prior to the start of each Tackers session. Communicate this assessment to the Tackers Club Leader and parents. • Determining the appropriate on-water and off-water activities given the weather conditions at each Tackers session. The Instructor Manual has been specifically designed to provide guidance for the activities that can be undertaken. As much as possible, Tackers sessions should run as usual with off-the-water indoor games replacing on-thewater activity if the weather does not permit the latter. • Proficient practical delivery of the Tackers Mission and Values. The Instructor should work creatively to adhere to the Tackers Mission and Values, using the information within the Instructor Manual as a guide. • Supporting the Tackers Club Leader in promotion of the Tackers program. • Organising the tasks required of each Assistant Instructor for on-water activities for the Tackers program.

Position Description: Tackers Instructor • Signing off Tackers certificates at the end of the Tackers course to those participants who have successfully completed the course. • Encouraging participants to undertake subsequent levels of the Tackers programs and membership within the club. Having an understanding and appreciation of the development sailing pathway is essential in this regard. • Upholding the reputation of the club by acting in a professional manner at all times. • Wearing the Tackers Instructor’s Kit at all times during delivery of the Tackers program – this includes the red long sleeved Tackers Instructors top, the Tackers Instructors hat and appropriate shorts or pants. Jeans are not permitted under any circumstances. • Using their Tackers nick-name with the kids. • Delivering the Tackers Session Plans (including the list games and activities provided in the Tackers Instructor’s Manual) provided by Australian Sailing. • Attend development meetings with the State Tackers Leader. Performance Measures: • Number of participants progressing to the next level of Tackers. • Number of participants retained in programs at the clubs. • Customer satisfaction survey results. • Number of safety incidents.

Position Description: Tackers Assistant Instructor The Assistant Instructors are employed to support the Instructor in the delivery of the Tackers program, in particular they are responsible for organising and supervising the on- and off-the-water games described in this Tackers Instructor Manual. Being a Tackers Assistant Instructor can be the opportunity to gain experience that will be advantageous to becoming an Instructor once the Australian Sailing Instructor qualification is achieved.

Performance Measures: • Number of participants progressing to the next level of Tackers. • Number of participants retained in programs at the clubs. • Customer satisfaction survey results. • Number of safety incidents.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience required by a Tackers Assistant Instructor: • Australian Sailing qualified Assistant Instructor. • Have completed the Tackers Assistant Instructor Induction. • A sailor with at least club racing experience. • Ability to work as part of a team. • Strong communication skills. • Ability to use initiative. • Understanding of the health and safety issues as they relate to sailing. • Enthusiasm for seeing more children participate in sailing. Tackers Assistant Instructor is responsible for: • Participants having fun. • Preparing the boats prior to the start of each Tackers session (at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the session). • De-rigging and returning the boats to the storage area after each Tackers session. • Working under the direction of the Instructor to delivery the Tackers session plans as outlined in the Tackers Instructor Manual. • Leading the Tackers on-the-water and off-the-water games and activities. • Using their Tackers nick-name with the kids.

A checklist must be performed before the commencement of every session to ensure the session is able to start at the scheduled time.

o Sign in / out sheets for staff and tackers ready. o Check BOM weather forecast and devise a session plan of the day’s activities. This will determine the necessary equipment for the day’s session. o Ensure that all boats are safely rigged and all equipment is in good condition. Special notice must be made to bungs and rig securing line at base of mast and bailer. o Rescue boats in water and fuelled with any necessary buoys and towing lines. o Prepare a learning environment with a whiteboard etc. which complements the theory or activities to be carried out. o Prepare equipment for off-the-water games. o Brief Assistant Instructors and volunteers. This will include the roles, boat allocations, and timing schedules. o Welcome tackers and greet parents / guardians. The Head Instructor is responsible for answering any safety queries of parents / guardians and putting them at ease. Tell parents / guardians what time the session finishes. o Fit each student with a suitable PFD. o Begin the day’s overall briefing and encourage parents / guardians and volunteers to attend. Include an introduction into the sessions learning outcomes, the expected weather patterns and any safety practices which need to be reinforced.

Communicating with Parents & Guardians The relationship between the Tackers staff, the child and the parents / guardians has an important bearing on the outcome of the Tackers program and long-term participation in sailing. Parents / guardians come with different expectations of what their child will achieve during the Tackers program. Parents / Guardians’ expectations can be effectively managed by explaining how Tackers is part of a progressive pathway. The emphasis should be on safety and fun as the key elements because Tackers is the early stage of sailing development. Be prepared that the parents / guardians may have a very limited knowledge of sailing and the Head Instructor will need to provide reassurance of safety procedures in place. Parents / Guardians should be made aware of the season timetable in the initial parents / guardians letter sent by the club informing them of the course details. In addition, the Head Instructor may want to reiterate this plan to parents / guardians at the start of the Tackers program. Get parents and guardians excited about the Tackers program! The key event for parents / guardians to attend, if they wish, is the end-of-course presentation and BBQ / Lunch. This may be an opportunity to discuss informally about the broader benefits of club membership but above all else it’s a chance to let the parents / guardians know the progress their child has made during Tackers and what opportunities exist in the future (eg. further Tackers programs, junior club membership etc).

Tackers 1: Session 1 OBJECTIVES Today we will learn: • the important safety elements of sailing • how to steer the boat while paddling and being towed • how to tack or turn around the boat.

Make sure belongings are safely stored and you can access drinks and morning tea.

CHECK LIST o All tackers registered and you have access to emergency contacts. o Rescue boats fuelled and in the water, each with a large floating tow rope which can attach to the Opti tow ropes easily. If this is not possible, the Optis should be attached to each other by their tow ropes. o Prizes – NO LOLLIES PLEASE: YOUR TACKERS CLUB LEADER WILL HAVE A PRIZE POOL YOU CAN USE! for the towing exercise, paddling race and the treasure hunt (floating rubber ducks, tennis balls, etc.) o Spare PFD for the safety demonstration. o Simulator boat rigged on shore.

An initial group welcome to all parents / guardians and tackers from the Instructors is a great way to get parents / guardians involved with the sailing program. Following this, the parents / guardians may stay with the Tackers Club Leader for questions whilst the tackers leave and begin their session elsewhere.

Sign On at the start of every session! Not only is this part of your safety and risk management but kids must learn to sign on as they will when they hopefully become racers in the future.

IMPORTANT Main focus besides fun! This is a great example of how to make a mundane activity fun! Zip up the life jacket, clip the buckles up and rip the straps up ‘weely weely’ tight!

Tips & Tricks Out of the elements to keep your sailors warm, fresh fruit is a healthy, tasty and inexpensive option.

Tips & Tricks A demonstration boat or (simulator) can be very useful for teaching. You can saw off an old rudder at the waterline and actually sit in the Opti! While this briefing is going on the Assistant instructor can be putting sails into boats.

Tips & Tricks Don’t Be afraid to be REPETITIVE, REPETITIVE, REPETITIVE! Kids need practice, the more complex the skills or the more components to a skill, the more practice and repetition, repetition, repetition is required!

IMPORTANT Tell the tackers to grab ‘the bunch’ (middle of the main sheet between the pulleys) and flick the sail over their heads to control the gybe and prevent sore heads!

Remind tackers to always keep a good look out and look before they tack / gybe regardless of whether they are on port or starboard. Get the tackers to stick green or red tape on the relevant sides of their boat to reminding them port (red = watch out & give way!) while, like the traffic lights; (green= all clear!)

A triangle course is best for Tackers 1 while learning to gybe as it restricts tackers to one gybe only. A windward / leeward course creates issues for beginners as they may be drawn into many gybes and boat handling becomes uncontrolled.

Tips & Tricks To promote tackers involvement; ask the tackers which muscles they use when sailing. Tackers should hold each stretch for 30 seconds.

Tips & Tricks A tiller extension should always be held as a ‘microphone’ in front of our mouth – not a ‘frying pan’ against our back leg.

Tips & Tricks Your discretion is your best friend! As the Instructor you will know when the group is ready to learn a new skill, these session plans are just a guide so discuss with your Assistant Instructor and make some big decisions!

Tips & Tricks Group discussion

A print out of a recent forecast, a newspaper and a synoptic chart can really spice up a boring theory session. Get the kids to find the weather report in the paper, including wind forecasts. The Beaufort wind scale is another useful tool and will help you explain wind strength in knots and sea state.

Tips & Tricks Have the tackers recall as much of what they have learnt as they can. Writing all the sailing words they know on the board can be an entertaining way of revising.

Tips & Tricks This is as much for the parents / guardians, yacht club and advertising of your program as it is for the kids themselves. Sell this as the big finale to your program and invite the Commodore down. Encourage the kids to “bring Nana, your brothers and sisters, and your goldfish!”

It is also important you advertise your club, the sport of sailing and the next step in the Tackers program.

Tackers 1 Competencies Boat Handling • Steered with tiller extension under towing paddling power • The ability to tie a figure 8 knot, round twice and two half hitches • Learnt and practiced how to perform the tack / ‘push turn’ • Learnt and demonstrated how to gybe / ‘pull turn’ • Comfortably reached around a figure of 8 course using both tacking and gybing • Sailing with the tiller extension (The Microphone Technique!) • Learnt to sail upwind and downwind by following the rescue boat
