TRANSLATING THE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE

A Chinese Garden In East Tennessee XUE YUE| MASTER OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE | THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE, KNOXVILLE Definition:

CULTURAL LANDSCAPES are cultural properties and represent the “combined works of nature and of man”. They are illustrative of the evolution of human society and settlement over time, under the influence of the physical constraints and/or opportunities presented by their natural environment and of successive social, economic and cultural forces, both external and internal (Operational Guidelines, 14). Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention. Paris: Unesco World Heritage Centre, 2005. Print.

Cultural landscapes need to be protected, developed and spread. Traditional landscapes that have limitations in fitting into modern trend of efficiency and economy, their essences should be extracted, rethought, re-interpreted in order to benefit not only the “culture owners“, but also people carrying different purposes from various backgrounds.

Full Moon Path Diagram

Moon View Stage in The Prince Gong’s Mansion

Moon has been appreciated in Chinese tradition for thousands of years because it’s waxing and waning symbolized reunion and separation of families and friends. This diagram shows the lowest altitude of full moons for each month through January to December based on four years data. The full moons are less likely to be blocked by Hess Hall behind the I-House from this viewport.

Till, raising my cup, I asked the bright moon; To bring me my shadow and make us three.
