Spring is the thing.

WRITERS Michayla Caughlin Paula Galli Amber Joliat Sabrina Loeprich Alison Smink

We’re ready for it. From the smell of humid mornings to the pleasant sight of flowers blooming all around. That’s right, folks! Xquisit is ready for spring. Being the Canadian-dwelling group that we are, we likely wont see these flowers for a few more weeks (Mother Nature has decided that continuous blizzards are more appropriate). Nevertheless, we can’t wait for all of the exciting things that this season has to offer. This issue presents a fine balance between lightheartedness and more serious issues. We hope to inspire you in these pages to better yourself, to care for the earth we rely on and love, and to create the life that you want for yourself. So go ahead. Soak in the sunshine.

FALL in love with your body Written by PAULA GALLI

Why is it that some people can love themselves and their bodies while others continue to struggle? Is it possible to end the habit of dieting and other self-defeating practices and learn how to truly change your relationship with my body and food? Life Coach, Nutritional Counsellor & Self-Esteem Expert Paula Galli investigates for Xquisit.

W

hen we think of our bodies we often times can just focus on what it looks like from the outside. Being thin can be incorrectly viewed as being healthy, while having some extra weight on you can be deemed as unhealthy. This is told to us through the media’s representations of beauty. I am not sure why and how the topics of beauty and health somehow got intertwined, but I am here to address just this. Loving our bodies is a pretty loaded issue for many people. For many, the focus is geared towards the way in which the body looks. When our body doesn’t look the way we want it to, for many, it is hard to have this feeling and notion of loving it. As a result, a disconnection can happen where which our bodies no longer feel as if they are part of us, but rather this separate entity. Engaging in types of harmful and self-disrespecting behaviours such as over exercising, dieting, restriction with food and more, often occur as a result of trying to change or manipulate our bodies to look the way that we think they should look. I italicized the term think because when you are looking to truly learn how to love your body a lot of it has to do with your thoughts. You may be saying to yourself, “My thoughts! What does that have to do with my body!?!” Well

I am here to tell you that our thoughts have a very powerful influence on our lives. For example, if we look in the mirror and do not like what we see, where do you think that “not liking” feeling comes from? It comes from the thoughts that we are thinking. The thing about our thoughts is that many of them are so automatic and on autopilot that most of us are not even consciously aware that we are thinking thoughts that are out of alignment with what we really want! Lets pretend you do not like your thighs. When you look in the mirror, your eyes probably automatically go to your thighs and begin to ridicule them. At that exact same time your mind is filled with thoughts that are criticizing your thighs. So the real work that needs to be done here has nothing to do with your thighs and everything to do with your thoughts! You can truly only think one thought at a time. Luckily, you have the ability to choose your thoughts. The thing is, choosing our thoughts is a lot more difficult if we do not even have the awareness of what it is that we are saying to ourselves (i.e. what we are thinking). So, in order to begin to fall in love with your body this spring, here are a few tips that I suggest…

54

“Creating a positive relationship with food comes from finding real freedom through balance, instead of restriction or rigid diet rules.” CHOOSE THOUGHTS THAT ALIGN WITH WHAT YOU REALLY WANT Begin to pay attention to what you are saying about yourself when you get dressed in the morning, when you take a shower and/or when you are standing in front of the mirror brushing your teeth. Those are times where you can either see yourself and/or are in more direct contact with your body. Once you begin to hear what it is that you are saying, decide if those thoughts are serving your greater wish or not; the wish of course being to fall in love with your body. If they are serving you, great! Continue to say those things to yourself. If they are not, choose to begin to say things that you want to bring into your life. In the example that I used above you would say something like, “I love my thighs.” You could say this mantra while you were looking at your thighs in the mirror, while you were washing your legs in the shower and/or while you were putting on your pants in the morning. The more you incorporate this exercise into your daily life, the faster you will begin to see a shift in the way you view your body. ASK YOURSELF, “WHAT DOES MY RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD LOOK LIKE?” The whole concept of your “relationship with food” may be something you have never heard before. In my early twenties I came to realize that I most certainly did have a relationship with food, a very negative one. I used to solely look at food as calories that would either make me thin or fat. The truth is, food exists to give us energy, to feed and nourish our bodies, and to leave us feeling vibrant and healthy. When we lose site of the real purpose of food, we again create another disconnect in our lives. I invite you to look at the lens upon which you view food through. If your thoughts around food are not stemming from a place of bettering your overall well-being, but are instead solely focused on your weight and appearance, then you have an opportunity to choose self-loving thoughts! Creating a positive relationship with food comes from finding real freedom through balance, not restriction or rigid diet rules. Watch your thoughts when it comes to food and shift them into ones that serve you and your overall health! MOVE YOUR BODY I suggest that you find an activity that you really enjoy because the goal here has nothing to do with calories and everything to do with movement and the feeling that occurs as a result of that movement. When choosing an activity that allows you to move, just remember that no form of activity is better or worse than another. Just choose something you enjoy doing and get moving! Again, ask yourself, “Am I moving for pleasure and health benefits or am I moving solely to burn calories?” If you find that your thoughts around exercise are not stemming from a place of bettering your overall health and well-being but are solely focused on your weight and appearance, you then can choose self-loving, positive thoughts instead! What I have outlined for you in this article is a very brief explanation of how you can truly begin to start loving your body today through the process of shifting your thoughts. I love this topic so much, that I created an event around it! I am hosting a FREE video summit called, “Love Your Body! Change Your Relationship With Yourself, Your Body & The Food That You Eat.” Here, I will interview 21 of the top Health and Wellness experts in the industry to share all of their secrets and tips and tricks with you! The event starts on March 28th. Visit www.loveyourbodylive.com for more details. You can also go to my website www.paulagalli.com to receive my FREE seven day video training series on how to fall in love with yourself, your body and your life! Lastly, remember we all deserve to love ourselves and our bodies for exactly who we are and exactly what they look like. I hope you all can truly begin to fall in love with yourself, your body & the food that you eat this spring! - Paula

YOGIS UNITE

Written by Alison Smink & MICHAYLA CAUGHLIN

FIVE YOGA STYLES TO TRY TODAY

There’s bound to be a style for you. Check out the most popular styles!

Y

oga has become a culture all on its own. With individuals labeled as “Yogis” and countless stores dedicated to the practice, providing specialized pants, mats, water bottles, and much more, yoga has become a phenomenon. Yoga has also developed into much more than just a workout; it has become a way of life. Yoga is commonly associated with certain mindful lifestyles with a close relation to meditation. Whether you’re a beginner or a well-seasoned pro, check out Xquisit’s top studio and style picks! Namaste!

BIKRAM OR “HOT YOGA”

HATHA

Get ready to sweat! In 105 degree studios with 40% humidity there won’t be a dry mat in the room. Considered one of the most popular and beginner friendly types of yoga with only 26 poses focused on alignment.

Looking for a relaxing, slow paced class? Hatha Yoga involves soothing breathing techniques mixed with calm, mellow movements that are sure to put you at ease. Focuses on stretching and relaxation techniques. It’s great for beginners to learn some basic poses, or for experienced yogis to take a break from more intense classes.

WHERE TO PRACTICE MISFITSTUDIO

Toronto, Ontario This one-of-a-kind studio offers both pilates and yoga. It is an open concept studio with creativity, love, and support at its centre. “Misfitstudio is where yoga’s centering calm gets spiced with a little rock and roll.” Its founder Amber Joliat has background in modern movement and ballet. “Misfit Philosophy: A person whose behaviour or attitude sets them apart from others.” We love this so much we might just have to use it as our personal philosophy!

EXHALE

Vancouver, British Columbia Located in the heart of the Yaletown area of Vancouver, Exhale Yoga is an intimate boutique described by many as their “second home”. The rich hardwood floors and vibrant mahogany walls create an inviting atmosphere. They have classes that suit everyone’s needs, from slow moving yoga sessions to dynamic upbeat dance classes. They even offer student deals like one week unlimited for $24! You’ll definitely leave feeling stimulated and smiling. ASHTANGA OR “POWER YOGA”

VINYASA OR “FLOW YOGA”

ANTI-GRAVITY YOGA

This class uses a series of fast moving poses to quicken the heartbeat. It’s a more intense class for more experienced yogis with some stamina. Its challenging pace helps improve and build your strength while concentrating on breathing techniques. It’s a more vigorous, athletic style of yoga.

Designed from its predecessor, Hatha Yoga, it too is focused on effective breathing techniques. It can be more challenging than other classes because of the rhythmic flow of poses. Vinyasa yoga is sure to get your cardio going, but also can be led as a slower paced class depending on the instructor. Fun Fact: No two classes will be the same!

With poses like “cocoon”, “skirted star” and “swoosh” this type of yoga is like no other! Invented by an aerial performer, Anti-Gravity Yoga incorporates elements of Pilates, yoga, aerial acrobatics, and calisthenics. It is performed in a hammock-like fabric that supports your body weight for a different kind of stretch.

wise words from AMBER JOLIAT

“Yoga to me is like untangling my breath my body my mind, often carrying around unnecessary tension, thoughts and stories results in a feeling of disconnect. The simplicity of deepening breath, moving fluidly through shape and pose creates focus for me, synching all three components, conscious breath, freedom in my body and clarity of mind. I see yoga as a dance. Practicing for over ten years the offering I can provide is to allow the body to move. I encourage students to viscerally connect, close their eyes and feel the sensations of movement itself.

Yoga can be lifting arms up overhead and back down all in flow, breath and mindfulness. It’s not all about crazy circus poses although, those ARE fun!” - Amber is the founder of Misfitstudio, a yoga studio in downtown Toronto.

OAKVILLE, ON: BIKRAM YOGA OAKVILLE Bikram Yoga is focused on allowing you to calm, stretch and clear your mind, while maintaining a healthy body. A

udrey Banavage, a highly-skilled Hairstylist and salsa dancer, suffered severely from the harsh toxins that were in the countless hair products she once felt chained to. After collapsing one day at work, she thought her career was over. Many doctors told her to just give up and choose a different career path, one free of toxins and harmful chemicals. She was at a loss trapped from becoming who she wanted to be. She decided to take some time off to pursue her second goal in life, to become an entertainer. She sailed across the ocean in a cruise ship doing just that. This time away gave her time to reflect and think about her options. It also gave her hope, hope for a new life, a healthier life, one that she is now delighted to begin. Here is Audrey’s journey; a road to a greener, toxin-free life.

Audrey Banavage

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A HAIR STYLIST? I became a Hairstylist because I wanted to secure my place on this planet with a secure career! My main intention was to become a singer/dancer/entertainer or star in Broadway shows. I figured I’d be smart with a recession proof career and still strive to follow my dreams to become an entertainer! Like whoever said people had to only have one desirable career? Right?

60

“The most difficult thing to do when your career is in limbo is to stay focused and avoid the typical routine.”

WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO HAVE TO STEP AWAY FROM THE STYLING BUSINESS? After 8 years working hard to establish an amazing clientele in a busy, award winning salon, my health forced my body to crash. I was extremely asthmatic and toxic. The daily chemicals wore me out, then on top of all that, I was almost allergic to everything. I was told by the western medicine doctors that I needed to choose another career. After all that hard work, networking and promoting myself, I was devastated. What was worse, was having to explain this to all my clients. I felt like my passion and hard work was stolen from me. After months of rehabilitating my immune system, I snapped out of my downfall and finally resorted to daily positive affirmations, meditation and a vegan diet. I didn’t know where I was going, how my life would turn out and what was going to happen next. I just took a deep breath and let the good stuff come to me.

WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO CREATE A ‘GREEN’ SALON? My crushed career as a hairstylist may have been over but it was a blessing for me to get into the entertainment business. I applied for jobs on cruise ships. They all wanted to hire me to be a hairstylist. After all, that was the only thing on my résumé. I told them I wanted to explore the shows and sing. They suggested that I design them a salon that only had Haircutting and styling services. That is what got my wheels turning. A salon with no chemicals? Hair cutting and hairstyling only? Most hairstylists in 2001 would have thought that was nuts, but low and behold you see specific salons today in 2013 only geared towards styling “Blo Dry Bar”, “ The Buzz for Men”, barber shops in general. Why not! There were no overhead costs right?. Shampoo, conditioner and a few styling products. What a great idea. I came home in 2008 already with my styling salon in mind. I Also thought that if there were an organic toxic free hair Color available, I’d open up a full service unisex salon. The most difficult thing to do when your career is in limbo, is

to stay focused and avoid the typical routine. It was definitely my time to step out of the routine and re-calculate the route to success. No chemicals, no negativity, no following the regular routine.

WHAT KIND OF ECO-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS DO YOU USE IN YOUR SALON? Since I choose not to use fragrance in my personal life, I decided to create a salon that was organic and use organic and natural cleaning supplies. Instead of Barbaside (Q.U.A.T.T.S), a chemical used to soak combs and brushes, I am allowed to use Benefect. It is 99.9% natural and it disinfects everything as long as its soaked or sprayed on with a ten minute waiting period. It cleans everything. From floors to dishes, to combs. Instead of Windex, I use vinegar and water. And if there were stains to be removed, I would use vitamin c crystals and water or baking soda. Instead of air freshener’s full of parabens, I use water with a few drops of essential peppermint on lavender oil. All laundry is done with Eco efficient machines during off peek hours and with un-scented high efficiency ecoert detergent. Soon we will be using Eco Nuts!

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER? We offer all services that have certified organic ingredients free from animal cruelty, free from resorcinol, formaldehyde, parabens, plastics, toxic fumes and free from toxic side effects. Choose from organic Highlites, organic hair colour, Eco bridal service with natural hair sprays that work, Designer Custom hair cutting with a light shoulder and neck massage for women, Men (mini facials & neck shave), organic styling (proms, special events, red carpet), Keragreen Chemical free smoothing service leaving the hair free from frizz, and scalp rituals massage with essential oils. We also now offer relaxing body meditation treatments where one lies down to receive a deep clearing of energy and a restorative balancing ritual that is guided with music and healing hands.

61

XQUISIT LIFESTYLE WHAT IS YOUR MOST FOND MEMORY IN THE SALON? It’s definitely hard to pinpoint one favourite memory in the past 7 months of operation. The look on my clients faces after they see themselves for the first time is definitely a heartfelt feeling. The most exciting person who walked in my salon for the first day I opened carrying bright orange flowers with a note “Congratulations on your success and dance with life.” This was a person who I had been dying to talk to for four years as I had observed her amazing yoga practice her name was Vivian. The card was from June, Vivian And Moksha Yoga studio Burlington.

DO YOU HAVE ANY DAILY SALON RITUALS? Since I am the only one working so far, my “Daily rituals” would be sending gratitude ahead of the day as soon as the sun rises! I practice yoga, then visualize happy loving people coming in happy and leaving happy and full of life. As soon as I open the door I thank it for being there as a constant open opportunity. Each client gets to have a moment in their service where they get a relaxing treat. Whether it being a shoulder and neck massage or scalp massage filled with positive loving affirmations that I prepare for them in silence during the consultation and their shampoo service.

WHAT OTHER ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY OR VITALIZING ACTIVITIES DO YOU TAKE PART IN? Going green has been a part of my life since I was born! As I expand my education about this topic, I can always learn a new thing each day. The community I surround myself with is a great source of support and commitment to keeping my life as clean and free from toxins, negativity and drama.
