X- PRESS FASHION

X-Press Fashion wanders into a wooden wonderland this winter with Where The Wild Things Are (how’s that for some onomatopoeia?), discovering pine needles glistening with morning dew, moss covered trees and a plethora of fashions for the cooler months. Taking sartorial inspiration from wood nymphs and lumberjacks from story books of old, Where The Wild Things Are takes an adventure deep into the forest, unearthing woolen jumpers, boots and berries along the way. Our winter edition also takes a look at six of WA’s most promising emerging fashion designers with the X-Press Fashion Graduate Award feature. Presented to one outstanding graduate from each fashion and textile course offered in Perth, the X-Press Fashion Graduate Award recognises excellence in design and construction, supporting designers as they begin their journey into the fashion industry. From all of us here at X-Press Fashion we hope you have a safe, wonderful and warm winter; until spring, that’s all folks!

NATURAL BEAUTY Forest Fresh By Annette Gohl While Robert Smith may not like being lost in one all too much, there are plenty of good things to be found in our local forests. Picnics. Camping. Native animals. Weekend hideaways. Ingredients for beauty products... what? Yes, really! As you may have noticed, the number of beauty and body products veering away from synthetic chemicals and skipping gleefully towards natural, organic and earthy alternatives are increasing exponentially. Yay! This can only mean good things, as companies continue to cut out synthetic nasties in favour of more of the pure stuff. Forests are a treasure trove of good-for-you ingredients, so come get lost in one of your own with these products and wellness destinations that will get you back to nature, stat. First up on our outdoors beauty adventure is the headclearing Endota ‘Breathe’ Oil ($23), featuring the forest staple eucalyptus, as well as lavender, lemon and peppermint oils. Used in an oil burner this blend will uplift any room, alternatively, a few drops sprinkled onto your pillow will help you breathe easy all through the night. Perfect for winter, boosting immunity and fending off colds. Get some now to ward off those imminent germs that appear as the temperature drops! Available at Endota Perth CBD Spa and online at endotadayspa.com.au. . From the dizzying heights of the eucalpytus tree, to the very bottom of the forest floor; our next stop is a

6

face mask that will soothe redness, eczema, dry and wind/sunburnt skin. Perfect to use after a day spent hiking! The Mega Mushroom Skin Relief Mask ($80), by Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins, draws on the power of three different varieties of mushrooms (as well as lots of other soothing goodies) to instantly start the healing process for tender faces. Thanks to the good Dr. Weil, you don’t need to get your hands dirty harvesting your own mushrooms, and can just pop this relieving mask on anytime things get hectic on your pretty face. Available in store or online at Kit Cosmetics kitcosmetics.com.au. If dryness and redness are of no concern, but your skin could do with a glow reminiscent of someone who’s just spent three weeks at a spa retreat doing nothing but eating organic vegetarian food, practicing yoga twice daily and going to bed at 7pm each night, then the next wonder mask is for you. The Instant Radiance Facial Masque ($29.95) by A’kin does just what the name suggests, and is one of the best shortcuts to dewy skin I’ve come across. Using the powers of tree bark, fruit extracts, rosehip and more, this mask simultaneously exfoliates, brightens and evens out the skin. The pump pack is super easy to use too. Instant Radiance Facial Masque is a pre-anything-important staple! Available from Priceline. A good facial steam can provide a number of skin detoxifying, pore-clearing benefits, and Lush have come up with some forest-y toner tabs that you can pop

in the bowl of hot water to amp up the power of the treatment. A Token to the Forest Gods ($1.95 each or $11.95 for a roll) is a green tablet that fizzes away and releases grapefruit, sweet orange and neroli oil to help refresh, cleanse and tone skin. A nice cheap addition to jazz up a simple beauty treat! Available in store or online at Lush - lush.com.au. After a good steam you’ll want to lock in the moisture, and Endota’s Bush Honey & Macadamia Skin Drink ($50) is my pick to do the trick. Bush honey is one of the best natural ingredients for attracting and retaining moisture, and this moisturiser feels and smells so gorgeous that you’ll want to apply it all over your body even though it’s just for the face! Available at Endota Perth CBD Spa and online at endotadayspa.com.au. Our last stop while we are traipsing about in the woods is Belara Springs, a unique little pilates studio and retreat nestled in the forest surrounds of the beautiful Bickley Valley, located 40 minutes from the Perth CBD. If a weekend away is on the agenda and you’re keen to schedule in a little fitness as well as relaxation then Belara Springs is the place to be! They have 18 acres of native forest to explore, a private orchard to pick your own fruit from and a spa pampering pack on arrival. Bliss. Find out more at belarasprings.com.au I hope you’ve enjoyed our forest foraging and are perhaps feeling inspired to cultivate a little more nature into your beauty and wellbeing routine.

JAMEEN ZALFEN

10

Though her studies are done and dusted, that doesn’t mean young designer Jameen Zalfen is sitting around twiddling her thumbs… in fact, quite the opposite is true. Since wrapping up her course late last year, Zalfen has travelled to Japan for the WA-Hyogo Banshu Textile Exchange Program, while also developing a label with a designer she met during her time at Polytechnic Institute. “A fellow designer, Rachel Motteram and I are establishing a label- Zerstört. It’s a combination of both our strengths, drape vs structure,” Zalfen responds when asked what she’s been up to of late. Describing her design aesthetic as “organic, textured and

asymmetrical,” Zalfen explains that her graduate collection was inspired by the concept of decay. “I was fascinated by the decaying of bones and natural pieces. I employed 100 per cent natural materials: leather, silk, and wool. To further support my inspiration I embraced the fabrics and did a lot of draping on the stand whether it was a structured piece or not. Designing for “relaxed, ethereal women who appreciate good quality and mixing pieces/layers together,” Zalfen is determined to get Zerstört off the ground in the coming year, with hopes to showcase the label’s debut collection at fashion festivals in WA and beyond.

EMMA BRANKOVIC Inspired by our nation’s early settlers and the harsh Australian landscape that tested them on a daily basis, Emma Brankovic’s graduate collection reimagines historical garments with contemporary twists. Constructed with natural fabrics and fibres which Brankovic boiled in eucalyptus, starch and beeswax to create rigidity and a coarse texture, the collection is a physical embodiment of the idea of strength in the face of adversity. “The concept for my collection was about the struggle of

the first English settlers who came to Australia and tried to continue their traditional culture in the harsh Australian landscape. [I was inspired by] aspects of the environment such as glare, dry hot heat and the worn-down, untouched landscape.” Currently completing her Bachelor of Contemporary Arts at Edith Cowan University, where she’s combined her love of fashion and photo media, Brankovic plans to travel once she finishes up her studies, hoping to soak up more historical influences to translate into her textile art.

GAUTAM KAPOOR X- PRESS FASHION

CENTRAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 12

Not one to shy away from colour and print, Gautam Kapoor’s graduate collection is a celebration of contrasts, with clashing patterns in exotic, bright hues that are impossible not to look at. Though he has a playful approach when it comes to fashion, Kapoor says he designs with strong female personas in mind. “I design for seductresses with keen intellect and confidence. Women who know what they want and what they have to do to get it. They take no prisoners!”

When asked about the driving idea behind his stunning graduate collection, Kapoor explains that he imagined he was designing for five female gods immersed in a sea of colour. “I looked at Tibetan and Indian temples for inspiration for colour and shape. The detailing in some of the carvings on walls and statutes on these temples were out of this world. My prints were quite geometric which is odd because during my time at Central I was all about florals and organic shapes.”

SAM DONALDSON X- PRESS FASHION

POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE 14

An adventurous designer who creates impeccably constructed garments for men who want to stand out from the crowd, Sam Donaldson is currently busy preparing for the upcoming Perth Fashion Festival, where he’ll showcase his label’s debut collection as part of The Carton initiative. “I’m currently working on a range that will be presented in the Student Runway section at Perth Fashion Festival in September; whether or not I launch my label (iamsam) into production will all depend on the feedback that I get from retailers, buyers and the general public that attend the show. “If I’m lucky enough to have people who wish to take on my label then I will definitely apply all my efforts into making that succeed and grow but at the same time I still think I have a huge

amount to learn in the fashion design industry, I’m just a little fish in a very big pond. I would love the opportunity to work in worldrenowned fashion houses over seas in places like America, Japan and Europe to further my knowledge. Even if that means I have to sweep floors and get coffees before I even get near a pattern-making table.” A true perfectionist, Donaldson works tirelessly at mastering his craft, and has even undertaken private lessons with Sydney Flowers, a retired Saville Row tailor who has instilled the young designer with a new appreciation for design. “Some of the things that he was able to pass on to me in that short period of time have changed that way that I handle and use fabrics. He is simply amazing with a piece of cloth in his hands.”

VERONICA PARISH X- PRESS FASHION

CHALLENGER INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 16

Looking for a change of pace after 20 years as a chartered accountant, Veronica Parish took a break from her career in finance just over three years ago, deciding instead to focus on her creative side by enrolling in the Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Technology course at Challenger Institute. With the Diploma now under her belt, Parish is determined to produce fashion that is “smart, innovative and forward thinking,” with plans to launch a label with fellow Challenger Institute graduate Susan Gadsby. “We decided to join creative forces and start our own label - Pure Damsel,” Parish tells X-Press Fashion. “Damsel derives from the French ‘damoiselle’ meaning ‘young lady’, which we all have inside us and ‘pure’ as we are planning on using natural fibers such as delicate silks, cottons, linen and wool. “Whilst studying together for three years we realised

our design ethos was very similar and that we both loved beautiful clothing that has the power to make you feel great, magnifying your confidence immeasurably. Every woman is unhappy with some aspect of their body, we want women to feel comfortable in their own skin and embrace who they are. When designing we are always thinking of the woman’s body with what she may want to reveal or conceal.” As for her graduate collection (pictured here), Parish was primarily influenced by rock icon Annie Lennox. “Annie is a beautiful, edgy, talented musician with a strong sense of style and self. With her androgynous beauty she was pop’s ultimate feminist icon, now she uses her voice as an active humanitarian campaigner around the world. I like to create for women with a strong sense of personal style and develop interest by using shape, detail and beautiful textiles.”

TAYLER AINLEY A graduate of Curtin University’s Bachelor of Fashion and Textile Design, Tayler Ainley approaches fashion from an interesting place, combining textiles with engineering to create show-stopping garments that move on their own. “In my final year I managed to rope in Alex Tennant, a recently graduated Engineering student who helped me build and incorporate robotic and electronic elements to my outfits. It was a really fantastic experience and because we worked so well together we’re taking on more projects of a similar stance as we speak. I think it’s important for everyone to do this (especially in the Art and Design community) at least once in your life and it opens up so many more opportunities and triggers ideas you never thought you’d have.” With no interest in conquering the commercial fashion industry, Ainley is more concerned with exploring the conceptual side of the rag trade.

“I definitely was more driven by the artistic and conceptual side of things rather than creating for the consumer,” she says when asked if she has plans to launch a label. “In saying that I am making one-off pieces under the label Trainley at the moment, but working on up-and-coming collaboration projects is taking up most of my time. Who knows what will happen in the future though. The day that remote controlled electronic menswear fashions are at the forefront, I’ll be there. “The year ahead will be packed to the brim with hours behind the sewing machine, concentrating on my next robotic textile project. I will be heading abroad as much as possible too to get as much experience as possible in the art and design world; it’s one of those ‘watch this space’ kind of few years.”

KWENCHER

Beer lovers and cider enthusiasts – finally there is a drink we can all agree on! Kwencher is a premium lager that unites the refreshing taste of beer with the sweetness of cider. Kwencher is crafted by the Beltz group in Geelong, Victoria using local hops and malt but then goes the extra mile by adding juicy clingstone peach and Darjeeling tea prior to filtration. It may seem unusual but the combination is ridiculously refreshing and is also a fabulous accompaniment to spicy Asian cuisine. What’s more there is a great story behind the Kwencher brand – the founders are a husband and wife who were travelling deep through the Moroccan Atlas Mountains where they discovered an amazing thirst quencher - peach iced tea and the local Moroccan beer blended together. Nothing like a cultural adventure to make a home brewer see the light! The Beltz Group launched Kwencher in Melbourne in November 2011 and recently launched their second product – Kwencher Pink Grapefruit and Black Tea in April this year. Founder David Burns said “our Kwencher Peach and Black tea has 50/50 male and female appeal however it is no secret that our recent Kwencher Pink Grapefruit and Black Tea has been especially appealing to the female market.” CONTACT: kwencher.com.au, enquiries@kwencher.com.au, Facebook.com/kwencher
