A Message from the President Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends, From the time Xaverian opened its doors back in 1957, there have been many faculty and administrators who have dedicated their lives to serving the students that have walked its halls. Those of us who were fortunate enough to have spent our high school years here will no doubt remember fondly the faculty and administrators who served as the role models and positive influences in our lives. As I learned of the passing of Brother Warren Abel, the fifth man to serve as Principal of Xaverian and the last Xaverian Brother to serve in that capacity, I recalled with admiration and gratitude such an important and influential person in my life. For many, Brother Warren will be remembered as the intimidating, no nonsense administrator that seemed to be everywhere in the building. Heaven forbid he caught you traveling down the “up” staircase, or cheering a little too loudly upon learning of a free last period. Even as a first year teacher, I found myself trying to make sure I didn’t do anything that might warrant a call to his office. For those of us who grew to know him better, however, he was a tremendously caring and compassionate person with a deep and unwavering faith in our Lord, and was a person with a genuine love for his students and for Xaverian.

Upon my appointment as President back in 2009, I sought out Brother Warren for advice and counsel. I was both grateful and humbled by his support and confidence as we spoke of the vision we both shared for Xaverian, and what it would take to achieve that vision. From those early conversations emerged the beginnings of what would be a multi-year planning process that would take place here at the school and involve faculty, students, staff, alumni, parents, and friends. In May of this year, the Board of Trustees of Xaverian unanimously approved a new Strategic Plan that sets objectives and prescribes actions that will lead the school in realizing an exciting vision for our future.

During this coming year, we will continue to refine the plan as well as the strategy for its multi-phased implementation.

The plan will be concentrated in three areas: First, Enhancing Academic Achievement—Xaverian has long enjoyed a culture of academic excellence. We will continue to develop programs that will further enhance student performance and that will allow us to continue to attract motivated students who will thrive in a challenging and supportive community.

Second, Embracing the Whole Student—As a Catholic school, Xaverian seeks to nurture and educate the whole student, one who is engaged not only academically, but spiritually and socially, and feels a strong bond to the school community.

Third, Empowering Our Future—To provide the highest quality of education and to provide the physical, technological, and financial resources necessary to support our students and faculty, we will implement an innovative and disciplined plan for enhancing and improving our campus, and will work to establish and strengthen lifelong relationships with benefactors and friends which will increase and sustain philanthropic support for our school and its mission.

I want to thank everyone who supported our school this past year. We open our doors this month, welcoming our 9th graders, the Class of 2016, and our 6th graders, the Genesis Class of 2015, into our Xaverian family. I am confident that we are embarking on the greatest chapter in our school’s history and I look forward to sharing more of the details of our Strategic Plan in the near future. I hope that all of you will consider supporting our Plan and vision for the future through your time, talents, and contributions. May God continue to bless you.

Guidance Department Expands College Counseling Initiatives

A

As a college-preparatory high school, Xaverian places great importance on the readiness of our students for the college admissions process.

What many do not realize is that a strong college counseling program must begin guiding high school students in their freshman year. It is with these details in mind that Xaverian’s guidance department has named Ms. Ana Loposky as College Coordinator. In addition to her responsibilities as Internship Director and Guidance Counselor, Ms. Loposky has been developing a vibrant four year college counseling program.

Ms. Maria Rodriquez, Assistant Principal for Student Support, is thrilled to be overseeing such critical growth within Xaverian’s guidance program, saying,“Expanding our college counsel-

ing program is extremely important as college admissions becomes more and more competitive. Colleges and universities are receiving more than double the amount of applications they did just a few years ago. It is important that our students have the best opportunities to gain admission to the top institutions in the country.”

In order to help shape the growing college counseling program, Ms. Loposky attended the five day Harvard Summer Institute on College Admissions. The Institute attracts nearly 200 admissions and counseling professionals from all over the United States, as well as abroad.

Over 40 informational sessions provide insights into current and future trends in admissions and provide participants with the tools they need to effectively establish robust college counseling programs at their schools.

Expanding our college counseling program is extremely important as college admissions becomes more and more competitive.

Colleges and universities are receiving more than double the amount of applications they did just a few years ago. It is important that our students have the best opportunities to gain admission to the top institutions in the country.

Ms. Loposky returned from the Institute inspired and energized, saying, “We are creating a sequence of steps from freshman year to senior year where students and their families are introduced to the college application process in a cohesive manner.” Beginning in freshman year, students will become familiar with Naviance, a program which helps students connect what they do in the classroom to their life goals, including finding colleges and careers based on their personal skills and areas of interest.

Ms. Loposky will also develop essay writing workshops for students, as well as create college admissions themed professional development opportunities for faculty. Parental contact efforts will also be revamped. Ms. Loposky plans to offer all college counseling meetings in smaller group sessions over three to four days, rather than one large college counseling session. She hopes this will provide parents with more scheduling flexibility and smaller, more intimate information sessions with more opportunities for question and answers.

— Ms. Ana Loposky College Coordinator In an effort to foster stronger relationships with college admissions offices nationwide, Ms. Rodriguez and Ms. Loposky completed a three day college tour in which they visited the following nine institutions: Yale University, Harvard University, Boston College, Boston University, Providence College, Brown University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Tufts University, and

Wesleyan College. Ms. Loposky will continue to actively work with students to promote organized college campus visits. Additional face time with colleges is available to Xaverian students by way of the College Tuesdays and On-Site Acceptance programs. College Tuesdays is a weekly event which features a variety of different colleges and universities stationed in a common area outside of the cafeteria so that students can learn about different schools at their leisure.The On-Site Acceptance program offers students the unique opportunity to meet with a college admissions representative at Xaverian and learn instantly whether they have been accepted to the institution, and also whether they have been awarded a scholarship. Schools that currently participate in the On-Site Acceptance program at Xaverian are St. John’s University, St. Francis College, C.W. Post - Long Island University, and St. Joseph’s College. Xaverian also hosts an annual College Fair on campus each spring which features representatives from over 100 colleges and universities.

IPAX Concludes Successful Inaugural Year In addition to college counseling, Ms. Loposky oversees the Intern Program at Xaverian (IPAX). IPAX, which was launched in November 2011, concluded its inaugural year successfully, garnering rave reviews from both mentors and students alike.

IPAX is a graduation requirement for students in the Honors program which allows students to explore potential careers, learn how to network, and enhance their resumes by gaining valuable, hands-on experience. IPAX tapped into its impressive base of professional alumni who were enthusiastic and eager to give back to their alma mater by serving as mentors in the areas of Architecture, Aviation, Business, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Film, Forensic Science, Guidance, Journalism, Law, Marine Biology, Medicine, Music, Performing Arts, Political Science,

Physical Therapy, Psychology, Public Relations, Sports Medicine/Fitness, and Technology.

Rick Buttacavoli ’98, Editor-in-Chief of the Bay Ridge Eagle, agreed to mentor two students who had an interest in journalism and called the pairing “a perfect match.”After sharing the knowledge he’s amassed during his nearly 10 year career in journalism, Rick said,“The goal of IPAX was to give honor students some real world experience in a specific field of interest. What it actually did, at least for me, was reinforce the fact that I had made the right decision in my own life by pursuing a career that allows me to take advantage of so many wonderful and rewarding opportunities.”

Students report enriching experiences as well.

Nicholas Walsh ’12, who is now attending Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, completed an internship with veterinarian Dr. Robert Composto. Nicholas said, “All of the doctors were comforting and sincere and were thrilled to have me interning for the day...I was a bit hesitant at first and wasn’t sure if the surgery would make me nauseous, but after the first few minutes, I absolutely fell in love with observing and watching the surgeries. What seemed like 15 minutes soon turned into hours as I looked up at the clock and realized I had been observing the surgeons for over four hours!”

IPAX continues to flourish with 71 students already placed in internships in their preferred industries for the 2012–2013 school year. Our Legacy Continues at Xaverian’s 52nd Commencement Exercises Xaverian High School’s 52nd Commencement exercise took place on Saturday, June 2, 2012, in the Walt Whitman Auditorium at Brooklyn College. The ceremony featured an invocation by the Very Reverend Eugene N. Pappas; presentation of graduation awards by Assistant Principals, Sandra M. Mummolo, Maria Rodriguez, and Michael F. Wilson ’77; a welcome by Principal Deacon Kevin McCormack; Valedictory by Nicholas Walsh ’12, who is attending Cornell University; and Salutatory by JPMorgan Chase Smart Start Scholarship Winner Matthew S. DeMasi ’12, who is attending NYU-Poly; President’s Address by Mr. Robert Alesi ’78; and the Keynote Commencement Address by The Honorable Charles J. Hynes P’82, ’83, ’87, District Attorney, Kings County, Brooklyn, NY. The commencement ceremony was the final event in what was a most memorable and exciting month for the Class of 2012. On May 22, the Xaverian community assembled to celebrate Senior Awards Night in the Brother Warren Abel Auditorium.

Seniors were recognized for their outstanding abilities in a variety of areas from academics to overall achievement.

On June 1, the Class of 2012 Baccalaureate Mass was celebrated by Rev. Michael Gribbon at The Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.The homily was given by our Principal Dcn. Kevin McCormack.The evening provided a welcome opportunity for graduates and their families to reflect on the many blessings of the past four years at Xaverian, as well as look forward to the many great opportunities that lie ahead. A Graduate Welcome was delivered by Joseph Castronovo ’12, who is attending Rochester Institute of Technology, and a Graduate Reflection was offered by Quenton Bubb ’12, who is attending Johns Hopkins University.

Success in Our Middle School— The Genesis Program Xaverian’s middle school, Genesis, celebrated commencement exercises for the Class of 2012 on Saturday, June 9th.

The ceremony featured an invocation by William Kay, a welcome from President Robert Alesi ’78, Valedictory by Grace Ronan, Salutatory by Nicholas Rucco, and a Passing of Tradition ceremony by the Genesis Student Council. Xaverian Principal Dcn. Kevin McCormack served as the Keynote Speaker and nearly 30 awards were given out to deserving graduates.

There were 52 students in this year’s graduating class and as a whole, they earned over 2.5 million dollars in scholarship awards.The graduates earned admissions to top high schools all over the city, including Xaverian High School, Marymount High School, Regis High School, and Stuyvesant High School.

Dean of Genesis, Patricia McEvoy, said, “The young men and women of the Class of 2012 are remarkable representatives of the Genesis standard of excellence.

I am very proud of their many accomplishments and I know that they will all have bright and rewarding futures.”

Genesis students competed this year for the first time in the Science Olympiad and took home five medals and the trophy for “Best New Team!” The students designed robots, towers, and “mousetrap powered” vehicles and competed against other schools within the region.

Seniors Shine at Research Symposium Five seniors capped four years of Xaverian Senior academic success at Xaverian High School by presenting their work to Wins JPMorgan students and faculty at the school’s first Chase Smart Start annual Senior Research Symposium.

Poterewicz, Nick Walsh, Matthew DeMasi, and John Eugenis, working closely with Faculty Mentors Dr. Seth Consigli, Mrs. Roseann Guido and Dr. Lalita Krishnamurthy, presented their findings on a variety of subjects.

Bubb, heading to Johns Hopkins University to study Bio-Physics, delved into Surgical Technology and its Impact on Medicine while Poterewicz, bound for SUNY-Stony Brook to major in Biology, discussed the Breeding of an Endangered Fish Species.The Effectiveness of Prescription vs. Over-the-Counter Drugs in the Treatment of Acne Vulgaris was the topic tackled by Eugenis, who will enroll at Brooklyn College as a Pre-Med major. For co-presenters Walsh, who will major in Animal Sciences at Cornell, and DeMasi, who will study Engineering at NYU-Poly, the subject was Visual Search: A Replication of Ulrich Neisser (1963).

In its first year, the Symposium was an absolute success, according to Assistant Principal, Ms. Sandra Mummolo. “The Symposium provides a forum for students, faculty and the community to emphasize the connection between research and education.This is a wonderful academic event where students have an opportunity to present what they have learned through their research experiences to a larger audience.”

Matthew DeMasi, a Bay Ridge resident, was named a recipient of the prestigious Smart Start Scholarship, awarded

by JPMorgan Chase to the top students in New York City.

The award carries with it a full tuition scholarship, a stipend for books and supplies, as well as a paid internship at JPMorgan Chase.

Planning to major in Engineering, Matt was accepted to Cornell University and is attending NYU-Poly.

The 21st Century Classroom In March, the seniors in the two St. John’s English Composition courses engaged in three head-to-head debates on the issues of the draft, evolution vs. creationism, and medicating children with ADD/ADHD. Congratulations to the debaters, Jordan Allen, Dominick El-Asmar,Yianni Kontiparakis, James McCauley, Nicholas Scaduto, and Christopher Sparacino, and their teams of classmates for collaborating on the research and content for the debates.

During the debates, which were judged by a panel of faculty members, seniors in both classes, as well as senior classmates watching the debates via a live stream in their classrooms, tweeted

Poetry Month Xaverian celebrated National Poetry Month in April. On Thursday, April 26, students and faculty participated in “Poem-in-your-Pocket” day. Participants randomly approached one another, requesting to share their poems and receive raffle tickets for a prize drawing.

Over 120 Overseas Students Visited Xaverian Through the International Summer Visitor Program This summer, Xaverian High School, along with its families, as well as families from the greater Brooklyn and Staten Island communities, hosted over 120 high school students as part of the International Summer Visitor Program.

The program, now in its fourth year, places students from Italy, Spain, and Russia with local host families for two, three, or four weeks.The students study English as a Second Language at Xaverian with staff from the Emerald Institute of New York, Inc., which is a New York State licensed language school based in New York City.

Students attended classes at Xaverian each morning, saw the sites of New York City in the afternoon, and spent evenings with their host families. Some of the cultural enrichment activities that they participated in include: walking tours of various New York City neighborhoods, including SoHo, Fifth Avenue, Greenwich Village, and Coney Island, as well as visits to a Yankees game, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center.

outing that takes place each year continues to be a group walk over the Brooklyn Bridge.

Students raved about both the academic and cultural sides of the program. Maria José Pesce, 17, a student visiting from Milan, Italy, said,“This trip taught me that even though Italy is located 8,000 kilometers away, we are all the same people with the same heart.”Another aspect of the trip that Maria José appreciated was seeing the spontaneity and creativity that permeates life in New York City. Of her walking tours around New York City neighborhoods, Mara José stated, “There is a freedom in the people here.

They express themselves...sometimes in crazy ways, but it is healthy!”

Giulia Caldini, 18, and Daniela Ghidelli, 18, both from Milan, Italy, reported that their favorite outing was their visit to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.

Both girls agreed that Bay Ridge, which they described as “quiet and green,” was a nice change from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The program was an enriching experience not only for the visiting students, but also for the local host families.

Xaverian families, as well as families from the Brooklyn and Staten Island communities at large, served as a crucial part of the International Summer Visitor Program by opening their homes to the visiting students and creating a safe and comfortable environment for the duration of their stay. Mr. John Ronan, a Bay Ridge resident who serves as Xaverian’s Registrar, hosted not one but four visiting students! He said,“We enjoyed the company of these bright, energetic young people. My young girls loved the attention and we adults appreciate their European perspective on life.

Also, we enjoyed seeing Brooklyn and New York through their eyes. It actually makes us appreciate where we live that much more.”

Curriculum Enhancement: Xaverian Introduces STEM Program

Kevin McCormack The Labor Department has recently reported that 65% of our present students will have jobs that have yet to be invented and the National Science Foundation estimates that the 80% of jobs created in the next decade will require some form of math and science skills.These statistics beg the question: “How can a premiere secondary school prepare the students for such an opaque future?” Steeped in the Xaverian Brothers’ tradition, we are very confident in our students’ ability to contribute boldly to future, just as their 15,000 alumni brothers who have gone before them!

Xaverian High School is proud to announce that, beginning with the Class of 2017, we will be introducing the innovative STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering, and Math) curriculum (http://www.stemedcoalition.org).

The STEM program is part of a national educational initiative that has been developed in order to better prepare our students for success in the 21st century.

The benefit of the STEM program is that it not only gives our students a more solid base of knowledge in the areas of Science,Technology, Engineering, and Math, but it also employs various technological methods to ensure that students can use what they’ve learned to problem-solve and, most importantly, apply what they have learned.

As the first Catholic high school in New York City to move to a one-to-one computing learning environment, Xaverian is in a healthy position to adapt to STEM curriculum. Each student and teacher being equipped with an iPad means that teachers are able to take advantage of the myriad of educational apps that have been created to serve as companions to STEM lessons.

Additionally, Xaverian will be inviting students to become a team in the A.C.E. program (http://www.acementor.org).

Led by talented Xaverian alumni, 15-20 of our students will develop and execute a real world Architecture, Construction, and Engineering project that will offer them hands on experience with the best in those respective fields.

This is what Xaverian, rooted in the Brothers’ expectation for greatness, is all about!

Performing Arts Highlights The renowned Music at Xaverian (MAX) program participated in a variety of special events both home and abroad this past school year. Highlights from recent months included a Spring Tour in Japan, which was part of the B-Bridges cultural exchange program, and a performance for the Army’s 237th Birthday at Cannonball Park. The Xaverian Dramatics Society, under the direction of Ms. Stephanie D’Emic, presented a production of Fame.

Baseball The Varsity Clippers baseball team won the CHSAA BrooklynQueens division for the fifth consecutive year. The Clippers posted a 16-1 record. They also reached the Elite-8 Double Elimination playoff round for the ninth straight season, by far, the longest streak of any CHSAA varsity team.

Swimming The Swim team just keeps getting stronger and faster as they finished 5-0 to win their division.They won the “B” Championship for the second time in four years, broke three all-time school records on the Frosh level, and broke eight of the nine current records on the Varsity level.

Track Track and Field came through with another successful year.

With the record setting performances of Laray Smith, they are now one of the pace setting teams in CHSAA Track.

Laray set all time school records in both the 100 and 200 meter races and came in second in a statewide tournament in Syracuse, NY.

Wrestling Wrestling started the season slowly, but after some solid practice time and some experience for the underclassmen, won their final two meets.They also performed well in the Farrell “Ironman”Tournament, winning four of their seven matches.

Volleyball Volleyball made the playoffs before losing in the quarterfinals.

We are looking forward to the underclassmen stepping up next year as the team loses eight seniors from its roster.

Basketball The end of an era came to Xaverian Basketball this year as two of our most respected and talented players moved onto their college careers. Dillon Burns and Brian Bernardi were two of seven seniors to graduate from the basketball program. They led the Clippers to the Quarterfinal Round of the City Playoffs.

Hockey The Hockey team had their loyal fans fill up the Aviator Sports Complex at their Friday night home games for some exciting action. Check out the Xaverian website for schedules, then come on down and enjoy.

Bowling After winning the CHSAA Championship on both levels last year, each team fell a couple of pins short on both the Varsity and Junior Varsity level this season. Both teams made the playoffs in one of the closest races in years in CHSAA Bowling, but lost in the inter-sectional finals.

The ball did not bounce well this year for the tennis team.

A couple of close matches that were lost, a few rainouts, and only one win made for a long season. A strong incoming Frosh class will put the program in the right direction toward a CHSAA championship.

Sense of Legacy Strong Within the Class of 2016 This school year, the sons of 17 alumni will enter Xaverian as members of the Class of 2016. Although the decision of which high school to attend ultimately falls to the student, there are many proud fathers who look forward to recalling their days at Xaverian through the upcoming experiences of their sons at 7100 Shore Road. Below are some of their reflections.

Michael Ganim ’88 Xaverian is a beautiful school. I had a great experience there, and I know my son Thomas will too. We looked at Monsignor Farrell, St. Joe’s by the Sea, and Poly Prep in addition to Xaverian.

In the back of my mind and heart, I always wanted Thomas to pick Xaverian.

Ultimately the decision was up to him, and I am glad he picked my alma mater.

We live in Staten Island, but even though you have to go over the bridge, it really doesn’t take any longer to commute from here than it does Marine Park and Mill Basin. We judged schools more on their resumes than by their locale.

Just like the high school looks into the resumes/ backgrounds of their potential students, we look at the school the same way. We look at a lot of things, including the list of colleges and universities that accept Xaverian students.That list is very

impressive and definitely had a major impact on our decision.To put it simply, Xaverian has a great resume. I also love the fact that many of the same teachers I had when I went to Xaverian still teach there. It shows the great strength of the school community.

Tom D’Elia ’81 I am so thrilled that my oldest son, Thomas, has chosen to attend Xaverian High School this fall.Thomas continues the legacy first started by my brother, Louis ’78, and then proudly followed by myself and then Louis’s two sons, Louis O. ’04 and Jonathan T. ’11. It was my education and overall experience at Xaverian that paved the way for whatever successes I have been fortunate enough to achieve and made me into the person I am today. Xaverian presented an environment that fostered critical thinking and organizational skills necessary to succeed and endure during very challenging times. Along with its challenging and vast curriculum, Xaverian boasts small class sizes, individual attention, and some of the most knowledgeable and creative faculty members around. There are also countless offerings of clubs, organizations, and athletic teams.

The combination of a fair but rigorous curriculum along with unique extracurricular activities place Xaverian graduates at a distinct advantage in preparation for college and other advanced forms of study. Overall, I am looking forward to the start of a renewed phase of participation in Xaverian activities, and am confident that young Thomas will be

presented with the same opportunities to grow as a student, a Christian, and, eventually, a successful alumnus of this great institution.

Joe Pacheco ’75 I am very proud of my son and honored that he is entering the very school that I cherished during my teenage years.

My son now embarks aboard the Clipper Ship on a journey which will be different than mine, but hopefully with many similarities as well. As my son begins this special time in his life, I look back at my time at Xaverian and cherish the memories. My son will now be part of a group of young men that I consider to be fellow Clippers. I look forward to knowing my son in this same respect.

When I returned to Xaverian with my son, I experienced chills as I passed the lockers in the hallway...even though they look so small to me now, they used to seem so big and were so much a part of my life. I look back fondly on the school dances, retreats, and all the events that shaped my high school experience.

I am so proud my son is embarking on this journey at Xaverian. He follows not only in my footsteps, but also in those of his uncle, who is also a graduate.

His experiences will be different from mine, but the joys and wonderful memories will share a certain similarity.

A legacy is being created, and I look forward to sharing in some of his moments at Xaverian—maybe even reliving some of mine too.

All Hands on Deck Alumni Reunion Over 400 Clipper alumni returned to the hallowed halls of their beloved alma mater to participate in the All Hands on Deck Reunion on Saturday, March 24, 2012. The Class of 1962, which celebrated its 50th Golden Anniversary, the Class of 1987, which celebrated its 25th Anniversary, along with additional classes that celebrated milestone reunions (Classes of 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1992, 1997, 2002, and 2007) were feted at special cocktail receptions in various spots on-campus before heading to the All Class Reunion in the gym.

The special day also included an Alumni Mass, a performance by the Xaverian Pipe and Drum Corps, Class Picture sessions, and delectable dinner prepared by Chef Michael Ayoub ’74.

Heroes Golf Outing On Friday, June 29th, Xaverian saw a tremendous turnout for our 2nd Annual Heroes Golf Outing, a fundraiser for the Dennis O’Berg ’91 Memorial Scholarship and the Fortis Fund, programs that provide grants and a scholarship to the sons of FDNY and NYPD families. The success of the day, which included a barbeque and round of golf at the Dyker Beach Golf Course, followed by an after-party at Xaverian, is a credit to a great committee of volunteers, with exceptional contributions by alum and current parent, Peter DiSalvo ’85, P’14, and his wife,Vicki DiSalvo P’14.

Xaverian in the Rockaways On Thursday, August 2nd, nearly 50 Xaverian alumni gathered at the bucolic Belle Harbor Yacht Club for a regional reception for those with ties to the Rockaways. The evening began with a lovely cocktail hour, followed by a performance by two members of the Xaverian Pipe and Drum Corps.

Xaverian President Robert Alesi ’78 welcomed attendees, saying, “Over the past two years we’ve doubled the number of students from the Rockaways who attend Xaverian and I’m very proud of that. Each and every day we work to raise the bar academically for these students, but at the end of the day it’s about mission. It’s about understanding values, it’s about understanding what it means to be a Xaverian student.

Our alums are leaders in every walk of industry and every part of society, but the thing that really makes them stand out is that they know how Director of Finance Jack Alesi P’99, ’01 and to give back. The Young Men and the Sea Xaverian Ferry Tales Although the Brothers selected the magnificent 19th century clipper ships as the symbol of their flagship school overlooking New York Harbor, few Xaverian students had a nautical experience while in high school. Except, of course, for those intrepid Staten Islanders who daily traveled the sea route to 7100 Shore Road aboard the famous 69th Street Ferry, the only way across the bay before the construction of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

Whenever Island alumni from the early years are present, you can bet that a reference to the maritime commute on the “boats” (named The Tides, The Hamilton, The Gowanus, and The EG Diefenbach) is inevitable.The salt air, the rolling deck in rough weather, the sound of foghorns, the smell of diesel fuel, the sight of dozens of vessels at anchor in the bay, and the camaraderie of schoolmates all combined to help form special friendships.

While a Bay Ridge fixture for more than half a century, few at Xaverian today even know why a large painting of the Brooklyn-Staten Island Ferry hangs in the Shore Road entrance. Between September 1957 and November 1965, approximately 125 Staten Island students made the daily crossing. A recent letter to these alumni brought to light some interesting memories of this unique aspect of the school’s history.

A sampling: ❱ Paraphrasing the poet Edna St.Vincent Millay:“We were very tired, we were very merry. We had gone back and forth four years on the ferry...” Virtually all of the 18 www.xaverian.org

days were routine. Most guys got the 8:00 am boat because it timed well with the beginning of school.The ferry ride was always the best time for me—you could catch up on homework, collaborate to get that nasty Physics problem from Brother Lucas, or just socialize.The boat home depended on your activity.

I ran track, so most days I got a 4:30 pm or 5:00 pm boat. —Don Bouchoux ’64 ❱ “Fogs made for fun on the water. I remember a particularly thick fog for which the ferry captain had placed two deckhands at either side of the bow of the boat to listen for the bells of ships anchored in the Narrows. We all distinctly heard the ringing of a bell—and then watched the deckhands point in opposite directions.” —Tony Tighe ’62 ❱ On several occasions, we had near crashes due to high winds and sea states in the Bay. Waiting at the 69th St. Pier was tough since the waiting room was so tiny and cold, especially in the winter. —Bob Kittredge ’62 ❱ The 69th Street Ferry boats were not very large and not equipped with radar. When there was thick fog, the boats didn’t operate.Those delays were considered “excused late.” I vividly remember one morning when it was well past 9:30 am and the forecast was for no lifting of the fog before noon. One of the upperclassmen called Brother Thaddeus and was told to “round up the herd,” take the Staten Island Ferry to Manhattan and then the subway to Brooklyn. What a scene! I think we made it just in time for lunch period!

—Tom “Smitty” Smith ’63 ❱ I was on the ferry in 1962 during Hurricane Donna. I remember the captain just barely guiding the ferry into the docking apron when there wasn’t much of the slip showing above water.

It was the last ferry to make the trip

that morning because the water had become too high. —Bill Philpot ’65 ❱ A lot of homework was done (copied!) on the morning trip over. Cries of,“Who has the math homework?” or English or whatever wasn’t done the night before could be heard most days.You had 20 minutes to get everything you needed.

The waiting area on 69th Street was a small shack that had the best chocolate donuts for a nickel.

—Ted Adams ’62 ❱ During one particularly bad storm, we [students] were the only ones to board. No cars, just schoolboys.The upperclassmen decided that it would be a great time for some freshmen initiation (so 1960’s, so politically incorrect nowadays). In rough sailing, waves were breaking over the bow and washing down through the car deck.

One frosh was asked to stand at the front of the top deck and periodically shout “Whale Ho!”Another measured the length of the upper deck—outside in the storm—with a ruler, while the rest ran from side to side amidships trying to rock the boat with their weight!

—Don Bouchoux ’64 ❱ And who could forget prom night when all us guys who had rented limos for the evening had them drive us to the ferry terminal in Manhattan so we could take that ferry to St. George and then take the 69th Street Ferry to the Brooklyn dock where the same limos were waiting to drive us the two blocks to Xaverian for our after-prom breakfast.

—Tony Tighe ’62 ❱ Day by day, we had a front row seat to the spectacle of seeing a suspension bridge being built. First we watched the towers being built, then the spinning of the suspension wires, then the suspension of the roadway from those wires. It was slow, but it occurred over all of the four years of the class of ’64 at Xaverian.

—Don Bouchoux ’64 ❱ It was a real blow when the Verrazano Bridge opened and ferry service ended just before Thanksgiving in 1964. It was a much longer journey by bus and much less pleasant trip once the ferry was closed.“Life is a journey. Enjoy the ride.

Anthony Piazza, Associate Professor at the New York Institute of Technology, donated a number of archival items to the school, including a collection of Shore Road Locals dating back to 1957.

1962 John Eppolito is CFO and Vice President, administration for the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, Inc. Patrick Goetz is enjoying retirement in Fishkill, NY, after a 45 year career in law enforcement; including stints with the NYPD, Fishkill PD, and Veterans Affairs PD. He and his wife, Evelyn, have been blessed with five sons and eleven grandchildren.

The paintings of Joseph Russ were chosen, in both 2010 and 2011, for the American Artists Professional League Show at the Salmagundi Club in Greenwich Village, where he garnered the award for Best Landscape in 2010.

1963 Robert Costa retired from JPMorgan Chase in early 2011 after 42 years in a variety of credit approval positions, both domestic and international.

Bill Mariano just completed his 45th year as a teacher, the last seven as a college professor.

Dr. James J. Hearn, Senior Executive Service, United States Army, was awarded the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joint Meritorious Civilian Service Award, having distinguished himself by providing exceptional meritorious service while serving as the Director of the Joint Program Integration Office U.S. Forces— Afghanistan.

Peter Mancino is enjoying his third retirement. Having previously served 24 years in the USAF followed by 16 at Atmos Energy, he worked as an Oracle Applications Developer at Electronic Transactions Consultants. According to Peter, “The third time is the charm.”

Joey Carbone splits his time between Japan and Los Angeles and is the top foreign composer and producer in Japan. An advisor for Sony Music and Avex Music, he is also a Vice Principal at Jikei Gakuen. Joey also spent 9 years as the music director for the hit TV show, Star Search.

John Gallo reports that he is the proud father of three successful daughters, a foreign service officer and two physicians. He recently moved from Brooklyn to Pennsylvania to be closer to his three wonderful grandchildren, but misses “the ability to get a container of milk without using the car!”

Frank Russo, working with the AMVETS John R.Tamburri Memorial Post 917 on Staten Island, is instrumental in supporting wounded troops at the Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Frank returned for a tour of the school and is now working to get Xaverian students involved with this wonderful cause.

1965 George Duryea, a C.P.A. in Lake Mary, FL, celebrated the wedding of his son, Beau and his bride, Brandi.

Frank Piro recently retired from the United States Department of Transportation, Washington, D.C.

1966 Bill Guarinello, Chairman of Brooklyn Community Board 11, was named a 2012 Civic Award winner by the Bay Ridge Community Council.

1967 Thomas Blank is the proprietor of the Black Goose Grill in Sharon, CT, a local home-style family restaurant with a fun and friendly atmosphere. Stop in for breakfast, lunch or dinner if you’re in the area and make sure to say hello.

1969 Kevin Campbell, is an Investigator for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and a Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Iowa.

1972 Charles Giordano, familiar to rock fans as the keyboard player for Pat Benatar, is now touring with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

1974 Bob Barrett’s two radio shows are syndicated on NPR in over 200 markets, as far south as Florida.

Jerry Cahill released an inspirational children’s book last April entitled, Jerry’s Circus Presents The Boy Who Could Not Fail.

Dr. Francis J. Collini has a long history of humanitarian work on behalf of children who are desperately in need of corrective surgery. For the past 14 years, he has led a volunteer team of doctors, anesthesiologists, nurses, and support staff to some of the poorest regions of the Third World, in particular, Ecuador. In the space of a week, the mission typically completes 70–80 corrective surgeries, often in excessive heat and difficult conditions. The team brings all its own surgical equipment and medical supplies, provided through the generosity of Community Cares For Kids, a robust benevolent foundation supervised by Frank’s wife, Susan, who works year-round raising friends and funds to support the mission.The U.S. Department of State praised Dr. Collini’s work “for conducting their mission in a manner that brings pride and credit to the people of the United States.” In noting his admiration for the team members, Dr. Collini cites,“The camaraderie and high morale of the team who work in often difficult conditions to bring help to the less fortunate is truly laudable.”

Raymond Ebarb, a founding partner of Great South Bay Medical Practice and V.P. of NYS Academy Family Medicine, is an assistant clinical professor at SUNY Stony Brook Medical School and HofstraNSLIJ Medical School. 1975 Anthony DeVito, who wears many hats these days as a creative consultant, writer, actor, and comedian recently created the hysterical video, Sh*t Native New Yorkers Say. Ralph Mauriello received the Breakout Actor Award at the Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema in California for for his work in the independent film, Greencastle.

1976 Anthony Bianchi, General Affairs Committee Chairman of the Inuyama City Council, hosted Mr. Joseph Loposky and members of Xaverian’s renowned music program on their recent trip to Japan.

1978 Jay Moyles, Marine Rescue Chief, retired after 31 years of service to Manatee County, FL.

1979 Jim Case logged quite a few miles traveling across the country to watch his kids compete in California. His daughter, Julie, a sophomore at Chapman University, was named Women’s Swimmer of the Year at the 2012 Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships and a Division III All-America in Water Polo.

His son, James, a member of the nationally ranked Santa Clara Men’s Water Polo team, was a First Team All-WWPA selection and received All-American Honorable Mention recognition.

Rob Colonna happily reports that all is well in Cranford, NJ. His home is back and better than ever, after four months of renovation thanks to Hurricane Irene.

Bill Gehrke is in his 18th season as an assistant coach with the LIU Women’s Softball Program. A former winner of the AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year Award, Bill has helped lead the Blackbirds to 10 straight NEC championships and seven NCAA Tournament appearances in the last decade.

Philip Vazquez is Director of the Speech and Hearing Center at Brooklyn Hospital. He is married with two sons, Christopher and Michael, who is a sixth grader in the Genesis Program.

1984 Joe Savarese bowled his second career 300 game last March.

1985 Anthony Insogna is the Global Co-Chair of the Jones Day Intellectual Property Practice.

1986 Joe Narciso has created Crib Notes, an educational program that he introduced to middle school students in New Jersey. Retelling works of literature by creating poems, songs, and videos, the program has been well received.“It’s a literacy program; Crib Notes is simply Schoolhouse Rock for books,” he said.

Joe McDonald was named to the National Board of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the oldest and largest Irish Catholic Fraternal Organization in the United States. Joe will be serving as National Webmaster for two years.

Kevin Molloy and his fiancée, Diane Sanchez, are planning a December wedding. The couple met in 2005 when Kevin, a member of the FDNY, responded to a fire at Diane’s home.

Billy Gorman graduated from The Catholic University of America with a degree in Architecture and is headed to Notre Dame University at the end of July where he is enrolled in a Masters degree program, also in Architecture.

Patrick Kelly, USN, pictured below, graduated from the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps program at The University of Notre Dame in May. He has been assigned to the Nuclear Power School in Charleston, SC.

Brendan Gorman, who coaches Bishop Kearney High School’s Speech and Debate team, was recently featured in a Home Reporter article regarding the team’s success.

Paul Hedderson and his lovely wife, Jill, were married last March.

Ander S. Heiles, USN, was promoted to the rank of Fleet Lieutenant while serving aboard guided missile cruiser USS Monterrey (CG-61), on an eightmonth deployment to the Mediterranean, the Black and North Seas. Previously, Lt. Heiles served two years in Japan aboard the destroyer USS McCampbell (DDG-85). He has been transferred to the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA, to study oceanography and undersea warfare.

Rocco Deserto made his first headlining appearance in the Breakout Artist Comedy Series at the famous Caroline’s Comedy Club in Manhattan.

Jermaine Mitchell, after graduating from Allegheny College as an All-NCAC Football selection with a degree in Economics, is now the defensive line coach for Marietta College in Ohio.

Anthony Shults, was admitted to the New York State Bar and is an associate at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton LLP. Anthony received a Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, Order of the Coif, from New York University School of Law in 2011, where he was a notes editor for the Law Review.

Tristani Family Establishes the Cosimo Tristani Memorial Scholarship at Xaverian We are pleased to announce that Anthony Tristani ’95 and Nino Tristani ’99, together with their mother Nancy, have established the Cosimo Tristani Memorial Scholarship at Xaverian.

Cosimo Tristani embodies the true American dream. After emigrating from Italy at 21 years of age, he came to America and started a new life.

He left a life of struggle and poverty, vowing to prosper and to take care of his family, which he did. Unable to attend school as a child, a strong emphasis on faith and education was fostered within him and passed down to his children and grandchildren. His accomplishments as a father, husband, businessman and devout Catholic set a tremendous example for his family and friends. His drive, hard work, honesty and integrity led him down a path of happiness and satisfaction. Cosimo’s humility and generosity were a part of his daily life. He believed in teaching by example and took pride in helping anyone he could.

The Cosimo Tristani Memorial Scholarship is granted to a young man displaying the hard work, humility, integrity, faith, and family values that set an example for his family and peers.

An equally important barometer of success was a notable increase in the number of Xaverian alumni, parents, faculty, and friends who are participating in these efforts. Xaverian’s ability to continue to attract and retain outstanding teachers through competitive compensation, offer academic scholarships and financial aid, and provide the technology and resources required of a premier education, are directly tied to the support and leadership of all of our constituents. A native of Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn, Brother Warren, (formerly Brother Melvin), a graduate of Regis High School, Xaverian College and Catholic University, served in many capacities as a Brother, before being named our Assistant Principal in 1968. A Xaverian Brother for more than 60 years, he had been residing at the Brothers’ residence in Danvers, MA. He was 80 years old.

In 1982, Brother Warren began his tenure as Principal; one that would last eleven years and bring about some of the most significant changes in Xaverian’s history. Recognizing the pivotal impact of emerging technology on education, Brother Warren oversaw the construction of the Technology and Research Center, preparing Xaverian’s students for the 21st Century. As the driving force behind the Capital Campaign that funded the project, Brother Warren not only gained the support of Xaverian Alumni, but their predecessors as well—the Alumni of St. Michael’s Diocesan High School.

Known as an incredibly skilled teacher and administrator, Brother Warren epitomized the values of the Brothers. While many remember with amazement his ability to create an annual schedule for 1,400 students and 90 faculty members without the aid of a computer, even more recall the kindness and devotion with which he treated students, colleagues and friends.There was no favor he would not extend; nor did he ever receive a courtesy without showing his gratitude.

The Class of 1993, the last to graduate with Brother Warren as its Principal, dedicated its yearbook to him by stating,“You may no longer be our captain, but you will always be our shipmate.”

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

May his soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

A memorial service honoring the memory of Brother Warren Abel, C.F.X. will be held at Xaverian High School on Saturday, October 13, at 4:00 pm. All are invited to attend. For details, please visit www.xaverian.org /alumnievents.
