Super Bowl XLIX Was It a Downer Bowl Logan Ferierra Staff Writer What does everybody who is anybody in football look forward to every year? The Super Bowl, not only for the intense sport, but also for the hilarious commercials. In previous years, the commercials have made people laugh, think, and laugh some more. Years before there were even hour long specials dedicated to showing all the best commercials of the year whether it was action, comedy, or romance. This was not the case this year. Since the commercials effectively made this Superbowl known as “The Downer Bowl.” Commercials that tugged at the heart strings, invoked feelings of sympathy, and empathy, some that even made the saltiest of people tear up. Undoubtedly, the top contender for most depressing commercial of the year was Nationwide’s “Boy” commercial. The commercial shows a young boy telling the audience about all the things that he won’t be able to do. Revealing bluntly a few moments later that the reason for this is “because I died.” David Weese, the ISS supervisor, said “you’re watching an exciting game and all of a sudden there is a depressing commercial, doesn’t fit the mood at all… it just didn’t match.” The commercial was considered insensitive for many reasons. One being that for families who have lost children or may be unable to have children this seemed like a low blow. Nationwide even acknowledges that the number one cause of child death is home accidents. More than likely it created some very awkward moments. “I felt like the message was a good one, but I felt it was conveyed inappropriately,” said Kaley Clift. This was the first commercial that was considered to be the tipping point which then treaded into dangerous waters. Nissan may have unknowingly made a commercial that tugged on your heartstrings as well; it depicted a dad who is a race car driver and isn’t there for the moments of his sons life growing up. as the son is leaving school and the father is there waiting for him ready to drive him home in the new Nissan. “Well at least it ended happy,” said Central student Katie Clark. Is it truly appropriate for companies to play on our emotions this way, especially the ones that attempt to connect with their target audience through using a false façade? Or is this truly a caring corporation that seeks to be more humanitarian and charitable with no malicious intent in mind? It is a hard thought question that many ponder, whether it is to announce the newest I- phone or for donations to the St. Jude’s Hospital. Bear in mind that all commercials are carefully planned out. Each one designed almost with machine like precision to have the desired effect. The Nissan Advertisement was trying to evoke a feeling of empathy, trying to connect with men who felt like they can’t always be there, but in the end they are always there when it matters most to the ones they love. The Nationwide advertisement was designed to shock the viewer to such an extent that they were moved to action. Even if someone was not truly interested in the message it still got people talking. Though Nationwide may have won the most depressing advertisement of the Super bowl, in the end they actually had the desired effect. “We absolutely knew that there was going to be a reaction where you had strong feelings both ways,” said Nationwide Chief Marketing Officer Matt Jauchius in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. “The initial negative reaction from the social space was a little stronger than we anticipated, but we absolutely anticipated that we would cause a conversation.” On average people will see around 16,000 commercials per year. Maybe the constant drone of adamant companies, needs to be broken by something that shocks us to the reality of certain situations.
