There’s not much more waiting for the little ones, Christmas is nearly here! What a great time of year this is. As each day passes we will get more and more into the festive spirit. Cariad and I will visit some of the many local fayres, taking in the atmosphere, the smells of mulled wine, have a jig to some of the live music on offer. A trip to The Old Railway Line is a must, to visit Santa in his Grotto, enjoy the woodland walk – throughout December Santa’s reindeer will be there every day! Yet again we have included a section to help you with your Christmas shopping. If you were thinking of going further afield this year, please take the time to read our article on page 47. We hope this will explain the bigger picture of why shopping local is important. This year Co is working in China for the first few weeks of December, therefore the task of gift shopping for the family will fall on me. I love to visit the many shops we have on our doorstep the Christmas music, the bumping into familiar faces, and the all-important part of getting that unique gift. What I don’t find locally I will source from further afield but as in previous years I am confident I will find most of what I need locally. If your child goes to a local nursery or Primary School, be sure to check their bag during the first couple of weeks of December. See our advert to the left. News from Talgarth by Cllr. William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth The last several weeks have been characterised by autumn mist, a seasonal chill and the occasional need to de-ice the car in the morning. While the great summer that we enjoyed this year gave way only very reluctantly to autumn – it is now almost reassuring that we should have a foretaste of good old fashioned winter.

With the inspiring proposals for Bronllys Health Park recently launched by Lydia Powell, Cllr Jacqui Wilding and their fellow campaigners, these are exciting as well as challenging times for Bronllys Hospital.
One local event that signposts the run up to the festive season each year is the Talgarth Luncheon Club Christmas lunch, which falls this time on Tuesday 2nd December. The volunteers will be turning up at the Town Hall from early morning to ensure that all the preparations are in place for an occasion enjoyed by all. And this celebration comes only weeks after the very same volunteers were out in force to host the third annual afternoon tea, in memory of the late Mrs Val Harvey MBE, which raised an impressive £1,638 towards Macmillan Cancer Support. This is a real tribute to the efforts of all who make it possible - and who contribute in so many ways to our community. This year those present included Kirsty Williams AM and Alun Tandy, McMillan’s Development Manager for Mid and North Wales. It is the same spirit of volunteering that motivates Talgarth Christmas Lights Group, whose hard work over many weeks will be lighting up our town in the run up to the festival of Christmas.
In the last few weeks, the work of the Welsh Rugby Union Charitable Trust has received considerable publicity, with former Gwernyfed RFC’s Ladies star Fran Bateman showcasing to His Royal Highness, Prince William the Trust’s invaluable support to her, following her disabling injury on the field of play. Last week I also took the opportunity to flag up this vital work to the First Minister, Carwyn Jones AM in the National Assembly for Wales. Prince William was evidently also impressed with the Gwernyfed RFC Ladies’ latest fundraising initiative – and I suspect that their 2015 calendar is set to be a sell out!
On Saturday, 8th November, it was my pleasure to attend the Bronllys Hospital & Community League of Friends’Autumn Fair in Talgarth Church Hall. This enjoyable occasion was a valuable fundraiser again this year and Roger Williams MP, together with several of my Powys County Council colleagues, were in attendance. I was delighted to see Cheryl Millington, herself a former nurse, joining the League of Friends as a representative of the next generation. I know that Maggie Sims and her colleagues will make Cheryl and other new members most welcome,
I look forward to seeing many of you in the coming weeks, at one of the several community events signalling the season of Advent. The Christmas Market is being held at Talgarth Livestock Market this year on Saturday, 6th December and promises to be a special occasion in its new venue, provided courtesy of Sunderlands and Thompsons Auctioneers. News from Glasbury Ward by Chris Davies Powys County Councillor for Glasbury As we look forward to Christmas, we can look back on this past month which also holds some important dates in our calendar. The most poignant of these being Remembrance Sunday, especially in this very special year marking 100 years since the start of WW1. I had the privilege of attending three services and two marches. At each it was clear to see the depth of feeling and the respect from each community. It is very easy to forget the sacrifices that have been made especially, as inWW1, where there are now no living survivors of that conflict. In Brecon at 11am, I laid a wreath and stood opposite a good friend who had so tragically lost his son in Afghanistan earlier this year. It really brought it home to me that we are not only honouring and remembering our past, but also our present - ‘Lest we forget’ - had an even greater meaning. On a much lighter note Guy Fawkes Night at Clyro Court run by the Black Mountains Lions attracted record numbers. I ended up serving
hotdogs once again and a lot of money was raised for local charities. Other events included Rhosgoch & Painscastle Toddler Group’s Halloween Party which was tremendous and I hope the first of many. Felindre Village Fireworks evening; Bronllys Hospital LoF Fete in Talgarth and of course Glasbury Arts annual exhibition were also well attended and great successes well done to all concerned. In my household with two young daughters it is a very special and exciting time as they await the visit from Father Christmas. Sarcococca – (Christmas or Sweet Box) No garden should be without this delightfully fragrant evergreen shrub which really comes into it’s own in mid-winter. Originally from Asia from China to the Himalayas, Sarcococcas are grown for their shiny, dark green leaves, wonderfully scented, white flowers from December to February and their small, glossy black, blue or purple fruits. For most people it is their scent which makes them essential in the garden.The flowers themselves are small and almost insignificant but their sweet, honey-like perfume is enough to make people stop in their tracks and search for the plant creating it! For this reason they’re great plants for beds and pots near to paths, gateways or house entrances. They grow best in some shade but tolerate full sun as long as they are not allowed to dry out in the summer. There are several varieties usually available in garden centres but are all easy to grow, relatively small shrubs, requiring little pruning and are tolerant of dry shade and even some neglect! They can be used as groundcover in a woodland garden or area, as low hedges which are clipped after flowering in spring or as specimen plants in beds, borders or pots. Mind Set Part One Mind set is in essence, how we think. That’s it! Not really that complicated but I get the opportunity to help people develop a positive or negative mind set in the Club, or “Weight & See”. Never underestimate the power of a positive mind set. It can completely transform a person. Much of what I hear is the opposite: I’ve tried everything! I eat well! I exercise loads! I don’t drink! (Yet my body just won’t lose weight!). Ring any bells? It is only on closer conversation, that we discover what they have said and what they are actually doing are two totally separate things. This isn’t to say that a client has deliberately lied to me they may genuinely think they are doing everything right. Ever watched that Secret Eaters programme? Families are secretly filmed and most are shocked at what they are eating (and the amounts). The mind is very clever at ignoring what it doesn’t want to face.
We need to face reality. Do you constantly participate in negative self-talk? “I will always be fat/unfit/ill… I can’t do this, No one likes me! It is all my fault”! If you are constantly talking like that to yourselves then until you tackle that, nothing will change. Just one tiny negative thought can snowball a persons day, week, month, year.. Learn some self-love: this will go a long way to allowing you to re-frame your mind set into a positive one. Are you really content to live your life being controlled by the past or do you want to set yourself free?! Changing your mind set will never be an easy or overnight process but as you make small changes, it seems do-able! We’ll look at how next month you can be ready for the “new year, new you”! Local Talent: Sarah Doney Artist Name? Sarah Doney. Type of Artist? Stone Carver. Range of Products? Hand carved lettering, relief carving, restoration, house name plaques, business plaques, memorial etc… Where can your products be purchased? I don’t have ‘off the shelf ’ products for Portland Stone Carved Panel sale because I always work Afghanistan Memoral to commission. I have an initial discussion with clients about what they would like to commission and then I prepare a quotation outlining how I will produce the work and what it will cost. I always prepare free quotations and consider this to be part of my work. Price range? I have to estimate how long each commission is likely to take and then I set an hourly rate. I take into consideration the cost of materials. Good quality stone is very expensive, so this cost needs to be covered within the overall price. All of my work requires a detailed full sized drawing. This is necessary to produce the carving and it’s very important for the client to see what you intend to carve. It’s imperative to get drawings approved, prior to carving. This helps to prevent costly mistakes. How long have you been an artist? I’ve been working with stone for about 30 years. Where did you train or gain experience? I left school at 17 and went to Weymouth College where I gained a City & Guilds in Architectural Stone Masonry. I was one of the first females to study there and the only one amongst 20 male students. Since then I have continued to gain experience with each commission.
was commissioned to carve the first memorial plaque in memory of Intelligence Officers who had lost their lives whilst serving their county since the First World War. The Queen unveiled the plaque at a special ceremony in the Memorial Chapel, Sandhurst. I wouldn’t describe it as a masterpiece but I’m very proud of this piece. Have you any future plans for your work? I used to have my own stone carving business in Surrey which I ran alongside my other work, leading trekking expeditions abroad and now I hope to do something similar here in Wales. A few interesting stone carving commissions would be very welcome. What advice would you give a local artist? Very practical. Always be honest and as accurate as you can with timescales and don’t promise completion dates that you cannot achieve. If the Queen is unveiling your work, don’t be late! Ask for a pre-payment to cover expensive material costs, this will help with cash flow. What other local artists do you admire? My fellow local stone carvers and Chris Pye, an amazingly talented wood carver.
What has been your proudest moment? Starting my own business when I was just 20 years old. Succeeding in a male dominated trade. This year I was commissioned to carve two relief isignia carvings and several lettered plaques for a new monument to commemorate soldiers who served and lost their lives in Afghanistan. It’s built within the grounds of the headquarters of the British Army Training Centre. The memorial is bigger than the Cenotaph. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? I

What have you done today to make yourself feel proud? Worked with the exceptional volunteers at Oxfam. What five words sum you up? Kind, laid back, delegator, leader, tea maker.
If you won a million pounds what would you do with it? Pay off my daughter’s mortgages and finance a one off project for Oxfam. What are your bad habits? Rustling crisp packets when my wife is watching TV. What bad habits in other people annoy you? People having the TV on when they have guests. Which book would you recommend? I refer to the book oracle (my wife) for advice as she’s a bookworm. What is the best present you’ve ever received?

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer Only this month left until a new year - it only seems like last week when we were recovering from the Christmas and New Year festivities from last time. However, it is here so please remember that shops will have odd opening hours and large orders need to be placed early. we are lucky this year in that we have the new depot for storing and putting up orders so we will be less crowded in the shop and be able to do a better job for you. It looks as though there will be plenty of the traditional Christmas produce around so prices shouldn’t go up too much. Earlier this week I went to look at the local potatoes that we like to stock. The King Edwards for roasting and the Maris Piper for chipping are excellent being even in shape and a good size. This year they have grown a new variety called Melody which I am assured is perfect for boiling as it doesn’t flake away in the water. The weather has gone to wet and windy and apparently is likely to remain so for the whole winter. Whereas this is not seasonal and won’t kill off the pests I will feel a lot more comfortable driving the van in the early hours of the morning - it really isn’t very nice with ice and snow on the roads. Already Christmassy things are about with plenty chestnuts, now imported as the local ones have all gone - they were much bigger this year than usual. The wet walnuts are over but local dried ones are now available and they are always good. Jerusalem artichokes having been very thin at first are now a better size and make a lovely cream soup. Sprout tops are probably at their best and most readily available. At one time they would have been thrown away but now are sold. Picking the top off the plant helps to produce an evenly sized crop of sprouts all the way up the stalk. Purple sprouting broccoli is now good and plentiful, the early pickings had grown too fast and gone a bit over with the yellow flowers coming out almost before we could get it on the shelf. Still lots of good English apples around including a new variety the Ruben, a fairly large red apple that eats beautifully - well worth a try. As this is the last one before Christmas I wish you all a very happy and peaceful holiday period.

Poem Corner Christmas – Now and Then October’s here – we’re into ‘Fall’. We’ve put away the large beach-ball. We’re picking apples, green and red, and storing grain in the barn and shed. A Christmas pudding soaked in brandy, some wine and sherry, port and shandy. Chocolates, nuts, a cheesy platter, The cost ? It really doesn’t matter!

Wild in December One of the “Butterburs” is in flower at Hay Castle as I write. This rather invasive plant is commonly called “Winter Heliotrope” as it will flower through the New Year. Later in the winter there will be plenty of the native Butterbur in Brecknockshire, along the A40, the Usk in Brecon and many other verges. This shows only flowers at first (an impressive cone) and many won’t associate the large leaves that come later with the flower. These leaves are the reason for the common name as they were once used to wrap butter. The botanical name (Petasites) is derived from the

Greek for a type of hat. Another Butterbur also occurs in our county and is by far the most elegant. Look for yellow cone-shaped flowers surrounded by leaves near the Wye / Irfon junction at Builth in March. For all these flowers the female plant is either rare or absent, in fact a female population of the Hay Castle plant has only recently been found in the UK. renewed its Fairtrade Town status, following an ongoing commitment to promotion of Fairtrade principles. Louise Davies from Fairtrade Hay and cofounder of Hay’s Fair Trade shop, Eighteen Rabbit, says, “We’re delighted to have achieved our renewal and would like to thank the local community for their support. Hay was first awarded Fairtrade status in 2008 in recognition of the strong support for Fairtrade within the town and the achievement of five qualifying goals, such as a wide availability of Fairtrade products in local shops and catering outlets, and high levels of support from local people, businesses, the council, faith groups and schools. “ Adam Gardner, Communities Campaigns Manager at the Fairtrade Foundation, said: “We’re so pleased that Hay-on-Wye has renewed their Fairtrade status and laid out clear exciting goals to take Fairtrade further. Thanks to the ongoing support of the public and campaigners, an increasing number of farmers in developing countries are now selling their products on Fairtrade terms, bringing them a stable income, and the chance to trade their way out of poverty.” Fairtrade Hay’s next event is the Fair trade Christmas Fayre, at the Buttermarket on Saturday 13th December from 10am – 5pm, a chance to buy beautiful fairly traded gifts from around the world. News from Talgarth Country Market Talgarth Regeneration Group was set up by a group of volunteers with the encouragement of the late Lord Richard Livsey. Its aims are based on a ‘Wish List’ published in 2006 after public consultation. The Group runs the Talgarth Rural Market, which takes place on the first Sunday of the month (between Feb – Nov) in the Town Hall, Talgarth. The market is growing in popularity both with vendors and shoppers, brings together artisans, producers and much more, specifically highlighting local traders.The culmination of the Market activity happens with the annual Christmas Market, this year taking place for the first time in the Cattle Market, a much larger venue. The
Group are hopeful along with many traders, live music, seasonal food and drink, that it will draw visitors both from the local vicinity and further afield. It ‘s not all about shopping however, the Group also runsTalgarth Flix in the Stix, which has been operating since 2008 when they showed Ghostbusters and Mamma Mia! Aiming to bring recent releases to the town, before they are distributed, it is well supported. The Flix Group also works with other organisations using the equipment to support other fund raising projects, more recently the showing of Nosferatu in St Mary’s Church, Hay on Wye. On Remembrance Sunday the original WW1 Memorial Plaque was unveiled and blessed in the Town Hall, having been renovated and restored.The Historical Society supported by the Town Council

and the Regeneration Group led the restoration project. The WW1 memorial plaque had sat in a residents garage for nearly 50 years having been recovered from the river wall in Talgarth where it had laid buried following the building of the new memorial that stands along side the river. Being the centenary year of the Great War, it was a fantastic achievement to see it finally re-mounted for all to admire and cherish. The Group run by volunteers has many aspirations and in 2015 a sports festival is planned in the town. The sports festival in August highlights and will showcase the various sporting groups and clubs in Talgarth and surrounding areas. The event is being supported by ‘Sport Wales’ amongst numerous sporting organsiations. Keep an eye on the Group’s Facebook page for more details. The big picture: Independent Shops Here at Cariads Local Ltd we are all about our LOCAL community. The clue is in our titles! Take our local shops for example, in Brecon, Hay, Talgarth and surrounding villages we are lucky to have many thriving independent shops. When the Wye Local and Local Beacon started our aim was to support, and advertise our local businesses, and in the past 8 years this has gone from strength to strength. The tide is turning away from the High Street; people are looking for a destination town where they can find something a little different. I feel this is what we have in our area. Of course we do have a few of the larger chain stores and they do have their advantages, they supply a wide range of products and in some instances they are able to keep their prices lower, but please remember this is not always the case. Recently Nicole visited both independent and national chain shops asking them for their opinions on how their businesses serve the community. Many of the independent stores commented that they feel they give a lot back to their community, “keeping the heart beating in the town”. The independent stores feel they provide excellent customer service and an in depth knowledge of their products. They also feel that they help to promote tourism to the area by offering visitors something different, they stock quality goods, many of which are hand made and locally sourced. They are able to customize their stock to meet local needs and feel they can offer a very personal service to their customers. Shopping locally helps to retain strong and vibrant communities. There is also the benefit of supporting the economy in the area and many of the shop owners are involved in fundraising for community projects. Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits than national chains do.Their businesses are their own and so they care passionately about them, as their success is their livelihood. Some independent shops felt that larger national shops are sometimes able to offer lower priced goods and therefore independent shops need to find alternative services, however this is extremely difficult. Another said “larger chains have the ability to negotiate savings on rents, and cost of products, therefore making it impossible
for independents to compete. They don’t know their customers, so customer care is low.They move into town and eventually close independents. Their profits are not put back in the local community, they go back to H.Q.” Shopping local creates and retains jobs - evidence shows that for every £10 spent in an independent shop £25 is generated for the local economy compared to £14 spent in nationals, for example an independent business owner is more likely to employ local tradesmen, a national shop tends to have contracted shop fitters outside of the area. The national chain shops stated that “they could offer a much larger selection of goods and that they could employ local people and offer them stability of employment”. Lastly Lisa Marie spoke with Andrew Jones who owns Vision & Sound in Hay on Wye, Bethel Electrics in Brecon, and A1 Electrics in Builth Wells. I asked him the advantages of shopping in any of his shops compared to a national chain shop or online: “Firstly all of the team are approachable and knowledgeable about all our products, our experience and training is very important. We don’t sell on commission so all my staff can give you the best product for you, not the one with the most commission. We are flexible on our service, for example we don’t have fixed delivery days. We have a better relationship with the manufacturers which we find keeps their brand well respected and trusted. A good after care also ensures this. Our prices are not always cheaper than a national shop or online but we are closer than you think. In some instances we are able to match or beat prices.” I feel this sums up perfectly why we need to consider shopping locally at our independent shops before going to the national shops or going on-line. Local people use both independent and national stores in our local areas, but if a clone town isn’t what you want, you need to consider the bigger picture of why we need to use and support our independent shops as much as possible so we don’t lose them. The loss of local retailers often leads to the loss of other local services, so shop local! Andrew Jones would lastly like to add “I also pay my taxes”.

The Laskett Gardens Remade The garden at The Laskett in Herefordshire is always described as the largest formal garden laid out in Britain since the war and one of the most important, interesting and artistic gardens of the second half of the twentieth century. It was made by Roy Strong and his wife, theatre designer Julia Trevelyan Oman, between 1973 and 2003. In the latter year Roy’s book about the garden and how it was made (The Laskett: the story of a garden) was published, Julia died, and Roy started to remake the garden. His lecture, based on his account of the remaking – Remaking a Garden: The Laskett Transformed—will be illustrated with photographs by Clive Boursnell, who has recorded the whole process from the beginning. News from Gwernyfed High School As we approach the festive season, students at Gwernyfed High School are busy working hard to achieve their academic potential. Those who have exams next year are even more focused. At Gwernyfed we have extensive data tracking systems, and this combined with our understanding of each student’s individual needs, means that we can provide targeted and individual support, ensuring that each student reaches their full potential. Interventions take place throughout the school day providing catch-up sessions for literacy and numeracy as well as other subjects where the student may need support. Additionally, after school, many departments provide revision clubs, and these include English, Welsh Art and PE. Every lunch time ‘Boost’ is run by our excellent teaching support staff who provide additional help with subjects and revision and there is also the after school Homework Club.

The scent of Christmas Christmas is my favourite time of year. The evenings are long and it is time to slow down, rest, reflect and think about the year gone by and future projects. It is also time to hang lanterns outside our front doors, welcome guests and create a heavenly mood inside with flickering candle light; it creates an ambient glow which makes everything look more attractive. Tea lights are great but candelabras are better, the bigger the better I say! Aroma-therapy is not just for the beauty salon – it is in the kitchen too. Nothing says Christmas to me more than the scent of the spices which go into a Christmas cake. Everyone has there own special recipe; mine includes cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, vanilla, orange, lemon, dried fruit – all soaked in Irish whiskey.
