Wycombe High School

MAY 2020

I would like to welcome you to the May 2020 edition of the Careers Bulletin and introduce myself. My name is Miss Spiteri - your Higher Education and Careers Advisor. Starting at Wycombe High School in January 2020 and schools then having to close only two months later, has been a very unusual but interesting start to a new role! We had many cancelled events due to our country’s current situation which would have given me some great opportunities to meet and get to know students and parents. These events included Year 9 Big Bang Fair, Year 10 University visits to Birmingham and Warwick, Year 12 Oxbridge Conference, Career, Inspire Talk session for Year 13 and, of course, our annual Higher Education and Careers Fair. Over sixty exhibitors from Universities, Colleges and companies across the UK had confirmed attendance to the Careers Fair, who will all hopefully be joining us again in March 2021. Looking forward to a new school year we have recently confirmed dates for our fabulous PSHEE days and ‘Career and Inspire’ talks where students will have the chance to meet some of the Wycombe High School alumni and find out what they are doing now, and their career paths. Year 11 students will have seen that Mrs Ellis, Head of Sixth Form, has collated a document for Year 11 students moving into Year 12 providing A Level preparation work for each subject. A great presentation, if you have not seen it already click here. Part two, coming soon, will have more extensive work for students to help them move forwards. Mrs Ellis has also been sharing with Year 12 information booklets regarding UCAS applications, with additional booklets for those considering Oxbridge applications and applications for medicine, dentistry and veterinary science. This week she is hosting a discussion session for Year 12 regarding personal statements on Teams. All part and parcel of the support we provide students year-on-year in preparing for the next phase of their career pathway, it has just moved online for this summer. After the half-term break Miss Drysdale will be hosting a similar session for those working towards an early UCAS deadline as they apply for Oxbridge, medicine, dental or veterinary schools. Let me share with you the information for 2021 entry admissions timeline for Oxford and Cambridge University through these links. More than ever, in these unprecedented times, it is advisable for students to consider their future and set exciting goals to aim for. I have provided lots of information below to support students. Everything below in PURPLE has a link attached to it. Do follow @WycHighCareers on Twitter for additional information. I hope to offer something for all our students whatever their plans and interests, even if they haven’t yet got any definite ideas – I am here to help. To contact me please send an email via Student Support ssa@whs.bucks.sch.uk and I will be in touch. Have fun exploring!
