Les Misérables

No one could have guessed on October 8, 1985 when Les Misérables opened in London at the Barbican Theatre that it would become a worldwide phenomenon. But audiences embraced it from the start, creating a “people’s musical” that has played in 42 countries and been seen by nearly 60 million people. In 2010, the legendary musical celebrated its 25th birthday and to mark the occasion, producer Cameron Mackintosh staged an extraordinary concert at the O2 Arena in London and captured it in Les Misérables 25th Anniversary Concert at the O2. With more than 500 actors and musicians — including Alfie Boe, Nick Jonas, Norm Lewis, Matt Lucas, Lea Salonga, Jenny Galloway and Katie Hall — the program includes the casts of the long-running Original Production at London’s Queen’s Theatre and members of the Original 1985 London cast. Les Misérables 25th Anniversary Concert airs Sunday, March 6 at 7 p.m. on WXXI-TV/HD. Repeats Saturday, March 12 at 3 p.m.

1370 Connection Forums & AM 1370 Specials Back of the Bus: Mass Transit, Race and Inequality, an American RadioWorks presentation, airs Sunday, March 6 at 10 p.m. American RadioWorks presents a new documentary about the fight for equal rights on America’s roads and transit lines. Many African-American communities were weakened or nearly destroyed by highways built in the 1960s. Today, bus service to poor neighborhoods is cut in favor of more expensive rail. This program visits communities across America to find out why people of color still struggle for equal treatment in public transportation. Intelligence Squared U.S. Is The Two-Party System Making America Ungovernable? airs Sunday, March 13 at 10 p.m. This The Republican and Democratic parties are entrenched in calcified partisanship, where politics is played as a zero-sum game. The rise of the Tea Party, liberal backlash, and the exodus of moderate voices from Congress all point toward the public’s growing discontent. Has our two-party system failed us? Is this a call to change our two-party system of governance?

Power and Smoke: A Nation Built on Coal an American RadioWorks presentation airs Sunday, March 20 at 10 p.m. Why do Americans contribute more heat-trapping gases to the atmosphere than Europeans with similar standards of living? One reason is our dependence on cars, but another, less-talked-about reason is coal. Americans rely on coal for nearly half our electricity. Can we burn coal more cleanly? Can we get off of it? This program goes back to the roots of our addiction to coal, and shows how our fuel choices changed American culture and history. American Abroad: European Dis-Union airs Sunday, March 27 at 10 p.m. American Abroad explores the evolution of the European Union over sixty years, from a basic agreement on sharing coal and steel among a few states after World War II, to an economic and political force that comprises twenty-seven European states.
