The Never Ending

Days of Spring & Summer Spring begins the renewal of annual growth, fresh scents and newborn wildlife. your spirit gets excited to finally be able to listen to the birds chirping and wood frogs clucking. The beauty of bursts of lush green grass with the emerging of waking wildflowers reminds you that the seemingly endless months of shoveling snow are over and spring is finally here. Golf courses start manicuring and clearing, hoping for an early season opener. ATVers anxiously wait for the trails to open and seasonal parks unlock their gates. Eager fishermen put away the tip-ups to make way for the launching of their boats into the Wisconsin River and surrounding Tomahawk lakes and streams. The calming of winter fades and the excitement of spring and summer take over. Summer brings the endless nights of camping and long days of enjoying the many beaches in the area. Catching fish is a guarantee, but more pleasurable when you latch onto the big one after spending the entire day on the water. Pack a lunch and fill a water bottle as there is no better way to fully appreciate the splendors of nature than by hiking or biking on trails including the Hiawatha and Bearskin, Bradley Park and in-town Riverwalk. Canoeing is great and many can be seen combing the calm bays of the area river and lakes. There are plenty of boat landings and picnic areas to stop and take a planned break. Summer kicks in Memorial weekend with a downtown Car Show and street gathering and runs through the long Labor Day weekend when many are getting in their last summer blast.

Tomahawk has many beautiful summer resorts, plus hotel and motel accommodations. But if heading into the woods is your thing, we also have numerous camping opportunities ranging from popular campgrounds with hook-ups to rustic river sites staggered along the Wisconsin River.

Abundant Lakes & Wisconsin River

The Tomahawk region is home to more than 15 lakes and flowages offering great recreational and fishing opportunities for walleye, musky, northern pike, bass and panfish. Each year, several trophy size musky, largemouth bass and small mouth bass are caught in our beautiful waters. Here is a highlight of just some of our beautiful lakes and fishing opportunities: Lake Alice: Just under 1,400 acres, Lake Alice is a great fishing lake that holds musky, pike, bass and walleye. It is best known for its excellent panfishing, including perch, bluegills and crappies. Lake Alice is also a popular ice fishing spot. Lake Mohawksin: This 1,910 acre lake and part of the Wisconsin River System, derives its name from three rivers: “Mo” from the Somo River, “Hawk” from the Tomahawk River, and “Sin” from the Wisconsin River. The lake is home to the mighty musky, some as long as 50 inches. Smallmouth bass, walleyes, northern pike, channel catfish, crappies and bluegills are also plentiful. Lake Nokomis: The largest lake in the Tomahawk area at 2,433 acres, Lake Nokomis is known for its bluegill, largemouth and smallmouth bass, musky, northern pike and walleye fishing. Known as a beautiful and productive fish lake, it is also a great place to spot majestic bald eagles. Lake Nokomis is part of a chain of lakes that includes Bridge and Deer lakes, with more than 4,000 acres of recreation. Spirit Flowage: A scenic body of water where wildlife is plentiful and the fishing is great. Walleyes are the main fish,

producing 10-lb fish every year. Northern pike, muskies, crappies, bluegills and huge bullheads can also be found. The winter is a playground for ice fishermen, as roads are plowed on the ice-covered flowage offering access to the famous fishing holes. Wisconsin River: The Wisconsin River flows through Tomahawk, regulated by the Kings Dam found on the east side of town. Many fishermen find this location to be a favorite fishing hotspot.

Tomahawk offers a vast array of activities from fall hiking to fishing and ATVing. September marks the fall kickoff with the Annual Fall Ride when thousands of motorcycles travel in to support MDA. Hundreds of vendors line the streets offering unique motorcycles and accessories. There are numerous raffles, rides and activities planned for riders, and visitors alike. Farmer Markets bring a surge of plentiful autumn harvests of many northwoods garden varieties. By early October, the pumpkin patches open their gates and apple pickers fill their garden baskets.

Numerous Trails for ATVing Enthusiasts ATV enthusiasts can enjoy well maintained trails in the Tomahawk vicinity including beautiful trails in the Harrison Hills, Little Rice, Nokomis and Somo areas. The Harrison Hills trail is 41 miles long, cuts through land carved by glaciers thousands of years ago and is open year-round. Little Rice trails cover the northern Willow area to Pier Lake and include approximately 43 miles of riding through rural roads and county forests. The city of Tomahawk has also opened ATV routes enabling riders access to local businesses in town.

“Time is critical when a child is missing. Funds from the STAR Foundation ensures Tomahawk Safe Assured’s commitment to provide the Safe Assured ID Program to all children in our community at no charge.” –Carol Swan, Safe Assured Program

Please consider the Tomahawk STAR Foundation when making your choices for charitable donations in 2013. Chances are someone you know has benefited from a STAR Foundation Grant in some way.

Tomahawk STAR Foundation .................................................. What is the Tomahawk Star Foundation? The Tomahawk Star Foundation serves the Tomahawk area by acting as a community chest for businesses and individuals by making charitable grants to community groups, clubs and non-profit organizations that contribute to the health and vitality of our area. Tomahawk is a generous community and many of its businesses, families and community members have found that by making a tax-deductible contribution to the STAR Foundation, they are able to support area organizations with one gift, rather than making multiple donations throughout the year. The Tomahawk STAR Foundation provides support to groups and/or organizations when they need it. Since its inception in April 2004, the STAR Foundation has donated more than $550,000 to local community groups in general and restricted contributions.

Making a Donation? As a business or individual, you have two options for making tax-deductible donations to the Foundation; either general or restricted. General donations fund grant requests the Foundation receives from local community groups. If you or your organization has a specific purpose in mind, you may designate your gift as “restricted” for a particular group or program. You choose how you wish to make your contributions. You will receive a confirmation letter and receipt of your donation. Your gift will enable our community’s spirit to continue to grow and prosper.
