As the capital of Shandong, Jinan is nicknamed the “City of Springs” due to the numerous natural springs that can be found in and around the city. The unique blend of the urban landscape and combination of the seemingly out-of-place natural elements easily makes this place a crowd draw. One renowned spring in the city is the Heihu Spring, one of the 72 most famous springs in Jinan City. Hei Hu, which means black tiger, is named after the strange and terrifying roar that can be heard when the wind rises through the cave. The Daming Lake is another notable attraction that’s located within the city’s premises. Calling the lake large is an understatement; at 460,000 square meters, this body of water represents almost one-third of the old city. Enjoy the scenic views of the lotus ponds inside the lake, and the ancient buildings and structures standing by the lake. If you have some time to spare, head to Quancheng Square. Covering an extensive area of 169600 square

Being the birthplace of Confucius as well as many other sages, Qufu is renowned for its interesting and rich culture. Situated in the southwest of Shandong, this city is home to a number of temples and cemeteries that were built to honour and memorialize the great sages that once lived here. One famous attraction is the Temple of Confucius (Kong Miao), which was built to worship the great thinker and philosopher, Confucius. Comprised of a group of grand and majestic ancient buildings, the temple is not only recognised as one of China’s Top Three Ancient Buildings, but is also the second largest scale Chinese ancient buildings, following behind the Forbidden City in Beijing. Another must-see sight is Mount Tai also known as Tai Shan (“shan” means “mountain”), which was visited by many influential figures in history, including emperors who were required to climb the mountain - as a rite of passage - before ascending to the throne. Nestled in the heart of

Daming Lake

Shandong Province, the mountain embodies the Chinese culture and has secured a spot in the World Natural and Cultural Heritage List of UNESCO in 1987. One unusual feature of this mountain is that it also serves as a natural museum - housing cultural relics and artworks. In addition to the imposing Tai Shan and its priceless artifacts, you can also explore the Taishan Underground Rift Valley, a fracture zone of the mountain ranges of Mt.Tai and Culai mountain. It connects to the underground karst cave, which is home to numerous stalactites and stalagmites. Apart from the otherworldly environment, visitors looking to explore the cavernous space should consider partaking in some cave rafting.

Qingdao

In many ways, Qingdao offers attractions that contrasts and complements Shandong’s natural beauty. With the Yellow Sea bordering both sides of the city, it’s easy to see why the port city captivates visitors with its seaside vistas. Apart from the numerous soaring skyscrapers, Qingdao - a former colony of Germany and Japan - houses a number of buildings that reflect European architecture. The bustling city has its fair share of natural and man-made sights, including Xiao Yu Shan, Ba Da Guan, Jiaozhou Governor’s Hall and Pichai Courtyard. The Ba Da Guan (Eight Great Passes) is a historical street district situated near the coastline, southeast of Qingdao. It is known for combining the architectural styles of countries such as Japan, American, Denmark, Greece, Spanish, and Switzerland. It was named after China’s eight famous strategic passes, and the eight roads it once had the roads were increased to ten over the years. There are a handful of sights one must see when here, including the Huashi Building, which embodies the typical European-style architecture, which was built by Gerasimov in 1932. Famed for preserving the French legacy and its rich culture, Pondicherry is another place to consider visiting when planning a beach getaway. The former French colonial settlement charms visitors with its distinctive French architecture and its French Quarter. The natural wonder is mostly seen in the northern and southern hemisphere. Some of the best places to watch the lights are Finland, Norway, Iceland, and the North Pole. Apart from being the best locations to witness these spellbinding lights, these countries encompass various attractions that will compel travellers to return back for more.

Finland

Northern Lights

Bordering Sweden, Norway and Russia, Finland enthralls visitors with its natural wonders and wildlife. Its diverse landscapes and pristine natural beauty has made it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. In Finnish Lapland, the Northern Lights are visible roughly 200 nights a year – or every other clear night. This gives travellers plenty of opportunities to catch a glimpse of the

amazing phenomenon. If you’d like to watch the Northern Lights without leaving your warm and cosy room, you’re in luck! The Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in Saariselkä, Finland, offers travellers with a unique accommodation - glass igloos, so that they may experience the full splendour of the lights within the confines of their private and homey hideaway. Although Lapland covers almost a third of the total land area of Finland, it houses only 3% of its total population. This means that when you travel further north, you will find a vast expanse of land and space, coniferous forests and rising fells in every direction. The landscape is ideal for embarking on adventures. You could jump on a snowmobile and may your way across the snowclad lands, chase the Northern Lights, or join a Husky Safari. Lapland is also home to every child’s - or adult’s - dream of meeting the one and only, Santa Claus. Situated in the capital of Lapland, Rovaniemi is not only one of the best places to catch the rare sights of the elusive Northern Lights, but it's also the “official” home town of Santa Claus (Santa Claus Village). The picturesque capital takes the form of a winter wonderland imbued with the spirit of Christmas a month before the annual festival. If you’re visiting the region during the Christmas season, you will not only get to send a postcard from the Santa’s Main Post Office, but will also be awarded with a Arctic Circle Crossing Certificate as proof of their journey across the Arctic Circle. Another place that’s worth the visit is Kemi, a town on the Bothnian Bay in Lapland, Finland. Steeped in culture and the arts, the region has grown to include more attractions to its list. One noteworthy crowdpleaser is the stunning SnowCastle of Kemi. Located at the northern end of the Gulf of Bothnia, the aweinspiring structure is made entirely out of snow. In addition to its pure white facade, the building boasts intricately carved interiors and furnitures made out of glistening, crystal-clear ice.

Northern Lights, Lofoten, Norway

Norway

Renowned for its unspoiled nature, breathtaking fjords, and extraordinary sights of the Northern Lights, Norway mesmerises many with its Scandinavian highlights. The northernmost parts of Norway have been renowned for being one of the best places to see the famous Aurora Borealis. In addition to providing an unobscured view, Norway’s clear and vast skies showcase the beauty of the Northern Lights in crystal clear clarity. The city of Tromso is a major cultural and historical hub in Norway that houses several museums and distinguishable centuries-old wooden buildings. Situated above the Arctic Circle, Tromso is the perfect place to view the Northern Lights, a natural phenomenon that lights up the night time sky of the region. If weather conditions permit, you will be able to see the stunning lights from the city. While here, you may also board the Fjellheisen- an aerial tramway, up to Mt.Storsteinen, a mountain ledge that is located 421 m above sea-level, where you can indulge in a panoramic view of Tromso and the vicinity. Noted as one of the untamed islands of Norway, Lofoten is a great spot for fishing and boasts charming sceneries that captivates travellers from all around the world. Trollfjord, an arctic fjord located between the Norwegian archipelagos of Lofoten and Vesteralen, is an outstanding attraction that offers spectacular views of craggy peaks, and lush greenery.

Iceland

Nestled in the North-Atlantic Ocean, Iceland is a country that enthralls travellers with its contrasting elements. Its dramatic and diverse landscape encapsulates active geysers, steamy hot springs, massive glaciers, and imposing mountains peaks. Similar to Finnish Lapland,

Northern Lights, North Pole

Iceland also offers travellers with countless opportunities to see the Northern Lights. Visible for more than eight months in a year – from late August to end of April, Iceland presents travellers with numerous occasions to witness the beauty and splendour of the Aurora Borealis. Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland is the starting point for many travellers, and it’s no surprise why. Located on the coast, it’s the country’s largest city and as such, offers a number of entertainment options. Additionally, the city is also famed for its culture, history and natural beauty. From its engrossing art galleries such as the Reykjavík Art Museum and the National Gallery, which exhibits the timeless pieces of Icelandic artists, to its highly celebrated cultural scene that hosts homegrown music, the city never fails to capture the attentions of locals and visitors alike. Alternatively, you could embark on a day-excursion from the city to the nearby mountains, glaciers, volcanoes and mountains to explore the natural beauty of this place. Include a horseback ride in your itinerary or get your adrenalin pumping with some river rafting. After an adventurous day, soak your sore feet in the Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s most popular geothermal spa. One must-see is the Perlan (The Pearl), a dome-shaped glass building supported by six towering hot-water tanks. Built in 1988, the giant structure sits on the top of Oskjuhlid Hill. The dome accommodates an observation platform that offers unhindered, panoramic views of the city.

North Pole

Located in the northernmost point on Earth, the North Pole was an enigmatic destination that wasn’t on the must-visit list of many until recently. Unlike its counterpart, the South Pole, there is no land beneath the

North Pole, but rather an Arctic ice sheet that continually expands in the colder months .The remote destination has captivated the interests of many travellers looking for something more intrepid and away from the conventional tourist spots in the world. The scarcely populated North Pole captivates travellers with its clear, unpolluted and almost cloudless skies with sights of the extraordinary Northern Lights as they ripple across the sky. The Svalbard Islands, which are situated in the Arctic Ocean is the place where many people will get acquainted with this icy wilderness. The craggy and untouched region is home to the polar bear, a diverse wildlife, and quaint, old mining towns. It is estimated that almost 3,000 people live on the islands, with over 2,000 residing in Longyearbyen, the administrative centre and largest settlement of the islands. Over the years, the community has transformed to become a modern and bustling town. There are a number of cultural activities that one can take part in, including concerts, shows, festivals and exhibitions. Interested to learn more? Avenue des Champs Elysees

Eiffel Tower

A FRENCH AFFAIR

Be fascinated by France’s charming crowd-pleasers.

Monaco

F

rom its picture-perfect coastal cities to its historical monuments, France has captivated travellers with its unique and extraordinary attractions.

Monaco

Just as moths are attracted to the luminescent glow of a flame, the rich and famous are drawn to the opulence of Monaco. The compact country has long been renowned for being a playground for the unabashed and affluent. Situated on France’s Mediterranean coastline, Monaco invites travellers to explore its picturesque ports, yachtline harbor, sun-kissed beaches and turquoise blue waters. The city-state also has a number of manmade attractions including the annual Formula 1 Grand Prix, which is held every year in May. Apart from the high-end accommodations, impressive buildings and its glitzy casinos, Monaco houses numerous monuments steeped in history. One such attraction is the Saint Nicholas Cathedral. Consecrated in 1875, the cathedral also serves as the final resting place for the recently deceased members of the royal

family including the renowned Princess Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III. The Opera de Monte-Carlo or more commonly known as the Salle Garnier, is one of the must-see gems in Monaco. Inaugurated by Sarah Bernhardt in 1879, the Salle Garnier is located in the Casino de Monte-Carlo and impresses its visitors with its 600-seat auditorium. For years, the stage has hosted international performances of opera, ballet and concerts, and continues to do so even today. If you have some time, the Prince’s Palace of Monaco is worth a quick stop. Being the private residence of the ruling Prince, only the State Apartments are open to the public. The imposing fortress was built in 1215 and over the years, great effort was undertaken to revamp the building, to embody the lavish style of Louis XIV. Today, the Palace has been restored to its former glory, thanks to the late Prince Rainier III, who ruled Monaco for almost 56 years. The frescoes decorating the open arcade known as the Gallery of Hercules were altered by Rainier III. He had imported works by Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli

dating from the 16th century, depicting works of art that embodied various mythological and legendary heroes.

Paris

Paris is a timeless city that conjures up images of charming street side cafes, iconic structures, and world-renowned branded stores. For years, the capital of France has enchanted visitors with its romantic ambience and architectural wonders. This cosmopolitan city attracts numerous travellers from all over the world to embrace its rich culture, fine cuisine, and its influential art pieces. A cultural icon of Paris and world-renowned architectural wonder, the Eiffel Tower holds a ubiquitous presence that be felt throughout the city. The massive iron structure can be seen from any corner of the city, as it stands prominently over the capital of France. An interesting fact about the tower is that it was once used to intercept enemy radio communications during World War I. Since its establishment, the Eiffel Tower has been the site of numerous highprofile stunts, ceremonial events and even scientific

15 | Travel Journal | Issue 20 | June 2017 experiments. It is estimated that seven million people visit the monument every year. Crowds of tourists flock to the tower’s platform to enjoy a wide-sweeping view of the bustling metropolis. The Louvre Museum is an ideal place for any art enthusiast to satisfy their thirst for masterpieces and impressive art collections. The historic monument is a central landmark of the city, and attracts art enthusiasts from all over the world. As the world’s largest museum, the art gallery holds Egyptian antiquities, notable paintings, Renaissance and Medieval artwork; and a collection of ancient sculptures ranging from the Medieval and Romanesque era. Visitors flock to the museum every day to look at the Louvre’s most famous work, Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa”. The museum was originally built as a fortress in 1190, but was reconstructed in the 16th century to serve as a royal palace. The Louvre Museum, which is housed within the striking Louvre pyramid is especially charming to look at as one walks through the main entrance to the building. The glass pyramid structure was installed in 1988 to provide light into the underground lobby of the museum. Noted for being the world’s most beautiful avenue, the Avenue des Champs-Elysees is an attraction as great as the iconic Eiffel Tower itself. Both Parisians and tourists stroll along these picturesque streets and take in the sights and sounds of the city. This two-kilometre stretch is situated between the Place de la Concorde

Louvre Museum, Paris

and the Arc de Triomphe. Famous restaurants, luxury boutiques, and flagship stores widely known by many are lined along this street; some of the biggest names include, Hard Rock Café, Louis Vuitton, Sephora, etc. The Avenue des Champs-Elysees has also been the setting for major events such as the Bastille Day military parade, the arrival of the Tour de France and the Christmas lights. In addition to housing well known stores and eateries, the famed avenue has some of the top museums in the world. Conclude your visit to the Avenue des Champs-Elysees by climbing to the Arc de Triomphe - a triumphal arch that stands imposingly to commemorate the soldiers and generals who lost their lives fighting for France during the Napoleonic Wars.

Marseille

The bustling port city of Marseille is renowned for its maritime history and deeply multicultural population. Founded sometime around 600 BC by Greek mariners, the city played a key role in France’s economic growth. Unsurprisingly, Marseille became one of the the fastest growing regions in France. Being a port city also means that Marseille has faced a huge influx of immigrants from all over the world, including Greece, Russia, Vietnam, and Spain. Apart from its rich multicultural background and its somewhat turbulent past, namely its involvement in the Battle of Pharsalus on August 9th 48 BC, Marseille is notable for its distinct culture. There

are a significant number of historic sites and monuments that still echo the city’s bygone era. The 19th-century Romano-Byzantine basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde is one such attraction. The iconic landmark is situated on the Marseille’s highest point, La Garde. Perched on the hilltop, it offers 360 vistas of the entire city. Although the current basilica was built in 1853 and consecrated in 1864, it was originally built in 1214. When it was first constructed, it was mainly visited by sailors praying for a safe voyage or to give thanks for their safe return. Interestingly, the city’s maritime connections embellish the walls of the basilica. From anchor motifs to the intricate models of boats hanging from the ceiling, the city’s rich maritime history encapsulated within the famous structure are almost omnipresent. While here, one should also visit the upper sanctuary and the vaulted crypt, both of which include imposing bronze doors, a high altar, a silver statue of the Virgin Mary, and a multi-coloured bas-relief of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. The Palais Longchamp, was not only built to celebrate an arduous accomplishment, but also to acknowledge the crucial importance of one of the most basic and vital elements of the world: Water. A plan was conceived in 1834 to dig a canal linking the city to the river Durance. This became a priority after a series of cholera epidemics that plagued the people of Marseille. After 15 long years, the canal was opened in 1849, and has remained as Marseille’s principal source of water until 1970. To commemorate the completion of the project, HenriJacques Espérandieu - the architect of Notre Dame de la Garde - designed the Palais Longchamp. The magnificent monument was inaugurated in 1869 and consists of a fountain, a waterfall and a water tower. Reflecting the distinctive Parisian opulence, the entire area is furnished with colonnades, staircases, pavilions and a triumphal arch and lavishly decorated with sculptures of nymphs, stalactites, lions and many other animals. Nestled in the quiet residential suburb east of Saint Charles Station, the site is surrounded by spacious grounds, which are perfect for a mid-afternoon stroll. http://www.euholidays.com.sg/

JAZZIN’ IT UP IN BORNEO

Let Borneo Jazz Festival redefine your travel experience. WORDS BY: SARAH SATHYAMOORTHI tourism board decided to promote the sleepy town, which through the festival began to position itself as the resort city of Sarawak. It may come across as a little peculiar to pick sleepy little Miri as the site for a Jazz Festival, but its humble, earthy charms make it a great spot for a weekend music gathering. Squeeze in a visit to some of the national parks in the afternoons and you’ve got yourself an ideal weekend escape!

Jazz for the Mass

Laila Biali brought modern jazz and soothing vocals to the mix

I

love a good outdoor music festival. Having attended a few in Singapore – Laneway Festival for a couple of years, Camp Symmetry and ZoukOut in 2014 - I can attest to the fact that music festivals are always a good idea. You probably wouldn’t have heard of every band in the line-up, but it’s a great way to learn about new artistes and just soak in the energy. Now, I am no connoisseur of music, but I do appreciate a variety of genres. And like most people, you wouldn’t be able to find anything Jazz-related in my Spotify playlists (save for maybe the soundtrack of La La Land, but that doesn’t really count). Jazz seems to have an air about it; it’s refined, polished, and demands to be understood. So, when I learned about the Borneo Jazz Festival happening in Miri, I was excited, but unsure of just how much fun it could be. Having

attended the party on the 12th and 13th of May, I can safely say that any pre-conceived notions I had built about jazz has come crashing down around me. The Borneo Jazz Festival is an annual two-day affair, happening in Miri, Sarawak. The 12th edition of the music fest this year was held on the spacious grounds of ParkCity Everly Hotel – a 10-minute drive away from the airport and located a little walk away from a beach, with the main stage set against a grand backdrop of lush greenery.

Jazz in Miri

Jazz was the genre of choice for the festival thanks to the thriving expatriate community in Miri approximately 12 years ago. It was also an avenue through which the

CaboCuba Jazz turning the festival grounds into a massive dancefloor

On the eight vastly differing sounding bands that are picked to form the final line-up, Artistic Director, Yeoh Jun Lin, shared that, “Each (international) band brings to the table something new and different to the experience; the local colour is important as well. You don’t go to a 24-hour concert to listen to one type of jazz”. The planning committee scouts for new bands to perform at Borneo Jazz each year, and Char Kway Teow Stall at in the process, has been Borneo Jazz cultivating an appreciation for jazz amongst the locals and has built a bigger audience with each successful run. This year, the line-up consisted of everything from a Japanese funk band (Osaka Monaurail) to tantalising Cuban beats by CaboCuba Jazz; the myriad of tunes that the audience were treated to during the two nights was evidence of just how expansive and fluid jazz really is. The festival started a little bit before the sundown. It’s laid-back and inviting. There are a few tents selling notebooks and rattan bags; a row of food stalls dishing out burgers and popsicles - there’s even a guy tossing char kway teow over a large flame! A very crowded bar serves up wines by the bottle, mojitos, and chilled beers to really get the party started. The night begins with each band bringing something new to the jazz buffet. One minute I’m grooving to Delgres – a soulful, sexy French trio who incorporate Afro-Caribbean vibes into their blues, and the next I’m salsa dancing on the grass with barefoot strangers to CaboCuba Jazz’s ferocious and infectious Cuban beats. Borneo Jazz Festival left me invigorated. It wasn’t overcrowded or rambunctious. The after-party jam session at the hotel’s Ruai Bar allowed festival-goers one last chance to be blown away by the calibre of talent present. Most importantly, the ease of walking back to my hotel room to retire for the night made for a fantastic overall festival experience. The dates for Borneo Jazz 2018 are out – so keep the 11th and 12th of May next year free. https://jazzborneo.com/
