Set amidst the scenic vista of fully bloomed cherry blossoms, the antique floats of the Inuyama Festival captivate both locals and visitors from all over the world. The annual festival was initially held at the Haritsuna Shrine in 1635, before becoming officially known as the Inuyama Festival. The two-day parade features impressive views of 13 three-layered, 25-feet tall floats with 365 Japanese lanterns attached to them. All 13 floats have been recognised as Aichi (a Japanese prefecture in the central Honshu Island) prefectural tangible folk assets. One unique addition that accompanies these amazing floats are the Karakuri mechanical puppets, which are situated at the top of each structure.

Taking place at the Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm, the festival’s international line-up will include the biggest names in the music industry. Iconic musicians such as Bob Dylan, John Legend, and Joss Stone will be taking to the stage to enthrall audiences. Sakura Season in Korea

Swan Valley: Perth’s Valley of Taste Located a 25-minute drive from the Perth Central Business District, the Swan Valley is home to the finest artisans. Here, you will find world-class chefs, chocolatiers and vintners – the Swan Valley’s prime location (it’s got great soil and an ideal climate) makes it the ideal spot to grow quality produce, earning itself the title of the first Humane Food Region in Australia. The Swan Valley’s long and hot summers mean that grapes enjoy extra ripening time, creating that rare and coveted taste in liqueurs and fortifieds. It is no wonder then, that the Swan Valley is the oldest wine region in Western Australia, with 183 years of winemaking under its belt! Get yourself on the Swan Valley Food and Wine Trail - a 32km long self-drive adventure - to explore over 150 wineries, cafes, restaurants, distilleries and art galleries; join a masterclass or relax with a glass of refreshing local wine! The next time you find yourself in Perth, remember to make a day trip down to Swan Valley for a refreshing and artisanal good time. “With our favourable climate conditions, the Swan Valley is filled with an abundance of fresh produce and products for export. As the oldest wine region in Western Australia, the region is renowned for its specialty wines and some of the finest fortifieds in the world...” remarked Mayor Mick Wainright. www.swanvalley.com.au

The season of cherry blossoms are upon us! This year’s spring forecast is out, and the peak season is said to arrive 1-4 days earlier than previous years. Besides the mesmerising sights of pink and white cherry blossoms that seem to stretch on for miles, visitors can also witness the equally captivating Forsythia and Azalea blooming all over Korea. Parts such as Jeju, Busan, and Seoul are the best locations to view these amazing flowers in full bloom. Since the flowers take about a week to reach their peak, it is expected that the state of Jeju will look its best after March 20th. There are also a number of places that host flower festivals, including the Yeouido Spring Flower Festival in Seoul, and the Jinhae Gunhangje Cherry Blossom Festival in Busan. http://www.visitkorea.com.my/

BHUTAN, A LAND STEEPED IN MYSTICISM Tucked away in the Himalayas, this Buddhist kingdom enthralls visitors with its history and culture.

W

hen one thinks of Bhutan, the immediate image that pops into the head, is a mystical land with places of worship perched precariously on the side of a cliff. Bhutan impresses travellers with its monasteries, fortresses (or dzongs) and dramatic landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see. This Buddhist kingdom is situated on the eastern edge of the Himalayas, wedged between Indian Ladakh and the Tibetan Plateau. It is known for housing several of the most revered Buddhist sites in the Himalayas. Besides serving as the spiritual centre of the region, this destination captivates travellers with many of its historical and cultural highlights. Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, is the perfect example of a city that encapsulates the soul of Bhutan while maintaining an image that is synonymous with a bustling city. It fascinates its visitors with its almost seamless combination of modernity and antiquity. Restaurants, internet cafes, nightclubs and shopping centres can be found here. Even if you’re strapped for cash, ATM banking facilities can be found at convenient locations throughout the capital. Thimphu also has its fair share of highlights that will captivate travellers from all walks of life. such attraction. If you have some time to spare, drop by the National Folk Heritage Museum and learn about Bhutan’s past through its exhibitions, demonstrations, and artifacts. The building’s facade resembles that of a traditional farmhouse or a rural home, and features three stories of art, culture, and relics. The Tashichho Dzong is another notable must-see sight. Build in 1216 A.D., this Buddhist monastery and fortress has been the seat of the government since 1952. Today, it houses the throne room and the offices of the King, the secretariat, and the ministries of home affairs and finance. An interesting fact about this structure, is that it reflects a distinctive Bhutanese architecture, and was built in a traditional style without the use of nails or written plans for aid. Others places of interest such as the Memorial Chorten, the Buddha Dordenma Statue, the Changangkha Temple and the Craft Bazaar, a marketplace that sells and promotes

traditional arts and crafts, it’s perfect for those looking for some authentic Bhutanese souvenirs to bring back home. The Punakha district or Punakha Dzongkhag, served as Bhutan’s capital from 1637 to 1907. Situated just a few hours from Thimphu, Punakha enchants travellers with its picturesque landscapes and serene atmosphere. The region is renowned for housing the Punakha Dzong, a regal and imposing dzong that is believed to be the most beautiful in the country. Set amidst the lush green valleys, this impressive dzong has hosted the coronation of all of Bhutan’s kings. It is also notable for keeping the preserved remains of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, a Tibetan Buddhist lama and the unifier of Bhutan as a nation-state. Paro, a town in Bhutan is another place one can stop by after exploring Thimphu and the Punakha district. The charming region offers amazing sights of fertile rice fields and a scenic vista of the pristine river winding through the historic town.

Taktsang Monastery

Taktsang Monastery, which is also known as the Tiger’s Nest. The tourist attraction is positioned on the side of the upper Paro valley, Bhutan. Standing 3120 meters above the sea level, the temple complex is a cultural icon of Bhutan, and is comprised of four main temples and several dwellings. Besides its golden roofs, the complex has an equally stunning interior comprised of a gold-plated dome and golden idols. The hall of Thousand Buddhas and the large statue of a tiger carved into a rock are a must-see. www.cstravel.com.sg

TOKYO … & MORE!

JOURNAL

Travel’s newly launched series allows you to explore Tokyo and another city of your choice

I

f you’re thinking of travelling to Japan, it is almost impossible to leave Tokyo out of your plans. The capital of Japan is a brilliant and bustling mess of sights and sounds. Home to approximately 13 million people, the crowded streets and sleek skyscrapers are a familiar sight even to those who have yet to set foot onto Japanese soil (thanks to the numerous directors who have used cosmopolitan Tokyo’s backdrop in various blockbuster movies). Tokyo has more than just steel buildings and futuristic bullet trains to offer. Enjoy a flavourful bowl of ramen on the streets or splurge on an extravagant meal at one of the many Michelin-starred restaurants. Stroll through the impeccably manicured parks of the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden in spring. Visit the historic and austere Meiji Shrine. Explore the quaint neighbourhood of Jinbocho Book Town for a quiet afternoon away from the bustle - perusing second hand books, Japanese art, and cafes. Couple your visit to the wonderful city of Tokyo with one of the many ‘&Tokyo’ offerings by H.I.S. Travel. The best part about travelling with H.I.S. is that you have the flexibility and freedom to add extra destinations or take a different route altogether! We’ve picked a few to get you started dreaming about your Japan getaway.

No visit to Japan is complete without an experience of either the magnificence of Mt. he National Association of Travel Agents Singapore (NATAS) Fair ran the 50th edition of the fair from the 17th to 19th of February at Singapore EXPO Halls 7 and 8. The fair, which was celebrating its golden jubilee, has come a long way from its inception in 1987. Admission to the fair, has been free since 2015 but this time round, the fair drew a grand total of 110, 901 visitors – almost double the amount from the figures of the previous fairs. The bi-annual consumer fair offered irresistible travel deals and packages. The opening ceremony of the fair was graced by His Excellency, Mr Marc Abensour, Ambassador of the Republic of France in Singapore, and Mr Devinder Ohri, with an attendance of over 200 guests including dignitaries from embassies, the travel industry and airline partners. In his welcome address, Mr Abensour spoke of the measures that France has put in place to stand resilient on the tourism front despite recent security issues, highlighting the necessity for the travel industry to keep abreast of current world issues and adapt accordingly. On each day of the fair, the first 50 consumers who arrived at the fair were rewarded with goodie bags, each with $50 worth of goodies. Visitors could also enjoy a specially curated line-up of performances by entrancing belly dancers and other cultural dances; talks such as a Travel Photography Talk by Canon were held to provide useful tips to turn regular holiday photography into works of art. UOB Travel offered deals such as ‘kids travel free’ promotions to selected destinations whilst H.I.S Travel unveiled innovative travel experiences such as their ‘& Tokyo’ series, which allowed for special thematic travels to other nearby destinations with the addition of exploring the well-loved city of Tokyo. “We are absolutely overwhelmed by the phenomenal support we have received from the travelling public. This historic figure on the cusp of our Golden Jubilee celebration is a testament to the confidence Singaporeans have in the NATAS brand,” said Mr Devinder Ohri, President of NATAS. “Significant to NATAS is not only the historical milestone achieved, nor the outstanding attendance or the business transacted during the fair. Equally significant for us, and the industry is the return and therefore the reunification of close to 90 per cent of our Outbound Tours community as one big happy family. I am happy to report that all of the exhibitors at this fair have committed to participate in our next fair as well, meaning this happy and harmonious state of affairs is here to stay – this is testimony to the confidence in the NATAS brand from our exhibitors as well,” added Mr Devinder Ohri. If you missed your chance to snag some great deals, the next NATAS travel fair will be held from 11th to 13th August 2017 at Suntec Singapore. Visit: http://natastravelfair.travel/

Qolsharif Mosque in Kazan Kremlin in winter, Tatarstan, Russia

RUSSIA’S ENIGMATIC FACETS

Discover the alluring offerings of Russia’s fascinating regions.

A

s the largest country in the world, Russia has long emanated an imposing global presence with its size and political influence. Besides being known for covering a large geographic area, the nation has roots tracing back to the Middle Ages. The country is home to an eclectic mix of ethnicities, attractions and highlights. Stemming from a rich and vibrant history, the various regions of Russia encapsulate the country’s diversity, culture and beauty.

Moscow

The bustling capital of Russia is home to famous Bolshoi Theatre and the iconic Kremlin. The broad avenues are perfect for taking a slow stroll and admiring the surroundings. The famous Tverskaya Street, which is situated on the top of Sparrow Hills and the imposing Lomonosov University, one of the Stalin-era skyscrapers are impressive sights one can admire. Travellers can drop by Arbat Street, a tourist hotspot to purchase all kinds of souvenirs, before passing other notable buildings such as the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Parliament Building (Duma), Bolshoi Theatre, and the imposing facade of Lubyanka, headquarters of the KGB. A trip to the Russia’s cosmopolitan metropolis is not complete without a visit to the iconic Red Square and the Kremlin cathedrals and churches.

Kazan

Located in the southeast of Russia, Kazan is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. The large, scenic region, which has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage city, captivates most with its Baroque monuments, and more notably, the Kazan Kremlin. The entire complex is comprised of archaeological, historical and architectural monuments, and has been acknowledge as a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site. When visiting Kazan, it becomes

apparent that the capital’s structures reflect the contrasting cultures and traditions of the East and the West. To learn more about the city, one can always drop by the National Museum of Tatarstan, the largest of its kind in the region. The museum contains the private collections of Andrei Fedorovich Likhachev (1832-90), a well-known regional archaeologist.

Yekaterinburg

As the fourth largest city in Russia, many consider

Yekaterinburg a “thinking city”, which is filled with museums, libraries, and theaters. The city was founded in 1723, and became a major pillar of the metallurgy industry. When the Siberian Route was built in 1761 to deliver Chinese goods to Europe through Russia, Yekaterinburg became a major hub in the transit of minerals from Siberia to European Russia, taking on its nickname of the “Window to Asia”. Nowadays, Yekaterinburg presents itself as a major cultural and industrial centre of the Ural Region. A panoramic tour of the city will offer sights of several

Additionally, the Nevsky Cathedral, a visually stunning Russian Orthodox Church, and the Church on the Blood, a site commemorating the location of the Tsar’s murder, are also equally significant attractions one must not miss during their visit to Yekaterinburg.

Novosibirsk

Novosibirsk is the third most populous city after Moscow and Saint-Petersburg. The city, which is located in Siberia, is home to more than a million people. The city’s growth was mostly attributed to the Trans-Siberian Railway. Today, Novosibirsk serves as a major Trans-Siberian transport hub. There are a number of things one can see and do when here. A visit to the Railway Museum can prove insightful as it features several locomotives and carriages from different periods. Visitors will be able to learn more about the historical evolution of transportation on the Trans-Siberian

Other places of interest are the Lenin Square, which is known for the famed statue of the Father of the Russian Revolution, Vladimir Lenin and the Glory Monument a.k.a the Monument of Glory, a memorial commemorating the fallen soldiers of the Second World War. The site consists of rock reliefs, and other intricately carved sculptures that visitors can spend hours admiring.

Irkutsk

Krasnoyarsk

The Krasnoyarsk region known for its natural beauty, and often enchants visitors with its dense, forested mountains and surrounding cliffs. Located along the Yenisei River, this city is often dubbed the most beautiful city in Siberia. Besides its scenic vistas, the region is also known for the Yenisei River, a large river system that more than a million Krasnoyarsk residents rely on for power, transportation, food, etc. The city center is also laden with cafes, restaurants, and a few 24-hour internet cafes. Another place of interest is the Stolby National Park, which is home

This small settlement, which was founded in 1661, was renowned as a gold and fur trade centre. However, from the start of the 19th century, the region became renowned for housing men involved in the Decembrist Revolt. By the end of the 19th century, it was estimated that about 30% of the population consisted of the Decembrist, which is believed to be one of the reasons why Irkutsk became the cultural and educational center of Serbia. Most of the city’s historical monuments dating back to the late 19th to 20th centuries can be found on the main streets - on Karl Marx and Lenin. The region also has a museum dedicated to the Decembrists, which is comprised of two memorial manors - Trubetskoy Manor and Volkonsky Manor. Both buildings contain items from the Decembrists and their family members. The Volkonsky Manor has interiors that were recreated to showcase traditions and the life of the prince and Decembrist, Count Sergei Volkonsky. A ferry ride from Irkutsk will take passengers to the spectacular Olkhon Island. Situated on the middle of a lake, this island captivates travellers with its placid, turquoise blue waters and its most popular site, Shaman Rock.

Listvyanka

The compact village of Listvyanka is one of the oldest settlements on Lake Baikal, a freshwater reserve. The town also provides easy and fast access to the picturesque lake. There are a number of places visitors can explore to get a deeper understanding of Listvyanka. Some of these places are the orthodox wooden church of Saint-Nicolas and the small market, where the local babushkas sell smoked fish from the lake and some locally produced handicrafts. In addition to the captivating scenery, Listvyanka also accommodates the Baikal Ecology Museum, where visitors can learn about the stunning fauna and flora that populate the unique Baikal ecosystem. he best way to experience Iceland is without a doubt, on a cruise. Sitting on a coach and travelling for hours overland on a coach is not an ideal way to spend your precious holiday time. As most of Iceland’s attractions and must-visit sites are located near the coastal districts, travelling on a cruise to each destination in comfort allows you to make the most out of your travel time! Get ready to be awestruck by imposing glaciers and majestic mountains that will welcome you at every turn. Iceland is a country that enjoys a cool and temperate climate, and it is easy to travel through the country in both the summer and winter seasons. It is largely known to be a place of contrasts; a place where all the elements of nature – fire, water, wind and earth – meet and display their characteristics in the most extreme and beautiful form. Many may think that Iceland is largely covered in ice, but in reality, only about 10% of the country is covered in glaciers. Universal Travel offers an excellent 14-day cruise program to the world’s most volcanically active hot spot. The tour will begin with a comfortable flight via Singapore Airlines into the city of Reykjavik. Hop aboard the Ocean Diamond – a cruise ship operated by Quark Expeditions and built for polar expeditions - which will pick you up at Old Reykjavik Harbour and bring you to multiple little towns and cities around Iceland.

The Blue Lagoon

ICELAND

The first thing you will get to experience once you set foot into Iceland will be the Blue Lagoon – an undeniably spectacular way to start your Icelandic adventure. The Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik is one of the most unusual places in Iceland – the natural, mineral-rich geothermal pool is found in the middle of a large and dramatic lava field. You can throw on your swim suit and soak in the magical blue lagoon, allowing the natural heat to course through your body. The fog, suspending and moving dully above the teal-coloured body of water, and the surrounding mountains, will make you feel as though you’d just ventured into another dimension – it is no surprise that the Blue Lagoon is considered to be one of the 25 wonders of the world! The next day, you will get to visit the national park called Þingvellir (or Thingvellir), one of the most important and historically significant places in Iceland. Þingvellir is also a geologically fascinating area; it is one of two points in the world where you can observe the effects of two drifting continental plates. Stop by the Gullfoss – also known as the ‘Queen of Icelandic Waterfalls’ – to witness massive amounts of water tumble 32 meters into the white river. In winter, the sight of the frozen falls and icy river is something else altogether. Another aqua attraction is the Strokkur, an active

geyser that can sprout water up to seventy feet high every few minutes! At the end of the day, you get to head to the Old Reykjavik Harbour to get on board the Ocean Diamond which will ferry you to the beautiful town of Stykkisholmur.

Stykkisholmur

Located on the Snaefellnes Peninsula in the west of Iceland, the town of Stykkisholmur, is an untouched beauty. Its inhabitants pride themselves for being an extremely environmentally conscious community. The area is home to Breidafjördur Bay and Snaefellsjoskull glacier – which sits at the top of a 700,000-year old dormant volcano.

Isafjördur/ Siglufjördur

Isafjördur is the largest town in the Westfjords region and hosts some of Iceland’s biggest festivals. The secluded peninsula is connected to the Icelandic mainland by a narrow strip of land. Take in the jaw-dropping sights of dramatic fjords carved by ancient glaciers and table mountains that plunge into the sea.

After heading to the largest town in the Westjfords region, visit the small town of Siglufjördur - an idyllic little paradise for those seeking adventure in the wild. Be it revving through the snow on a snowmobile or hiking through the valleys, the recreational possibilities here are endless. Your tour will include a visit to the Herring Era Museum, where you will learn more about Iceland’s herring industry which played a significant role in Iceland’s economy in the 20th century.

Akureyri /Husavik/Seydisfjördur

The cruise adventure will continue on to Akureyri, Iceland’s second largest city. Here, the gorgeous region of Lake Myvatn awaits! The area is best known for its cacophony of sights – from lush pastures on one side to lava fields on the other. You will then head to the whale watching capital of Iceland. Husavik’s waters are home to 15 different whale species, dolphins and approximately 30 types of birds! You have the option to watch these graceful sea giants in their Arctic habitat by adding on optional whale-watching tours. Alternatively, you could get on a super jeep and traverse through the road less travelled. The area is also well-known

for its geothermal springs, so you could sit back and relax at one of the many heated local pools. The beautiful town also has some excellent dining options, such as the Gamli Bakur Restaurant, which is located near the harbour with superb views of the mountains across the bay. Continue on to Seydisfjördur, a friendly town of just 700 people. The close-knit community live between the sea and the imposing mountains, boast of a flourishing art scene, scenic hiking trails and easy guided tours.

Djupivogur

Djupivogur is a fishing village in south-east Iceland, and the starting point for an optional excursion to Vatnajokill glacier. You can choose to embark on an adventurous super jeep tour, which includes a challenging two-hour hike and lunch for fuel! Uncover some of Iceland’s hidden treasures and bring back some unforgettable memories (and stunning photographs!).

Vestmannaeyjar

Your cruise will leave you on the archipelago of Vestmannaeyjar, which is located off Iceland’s south coast, a standalone island off the mainland. The island, also called the Westman Islands, were formed by underwater volcanic eruptions over 10,000 years ago. You will head to the island of Heimaey, the only inhabited island, where the eerie remains of half-buried houses can still be seen from a violent eruption in 1973. The beauty of Heimaey is unprecedented, perhaps even more so because of its tragic past. Here, you can embark on an optional bus tour to Pompeii of the North – the name given to the project that involves excavating the houses devastated by the eruption. Works have been underway since 2005, and by the end of its completion, archaeologists hope to uncover an entire village. www.universaltravel.com.sg

Salzburg is also notable for being the birthplace of Mozart; you can visit the Mirabell Palace, where Mozart played his timeless pieces. Take some

Prague

time to explore the old city on foot; you will come across many structures, including fortresses, churches, squares and palaces that reflect the historic charm of this region. Consider joining an optional Wachau excursion after reaching Emmersdorf, a town in Austria. While here, you can visit the famous Melk Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Benedictine abbey situated above the town of Melk. Continue your way to Durnstein, a compact Austrian town that is renowned for its castle ruins, which are perched on top of cliffs. You’ll then make your way to the capital of Austria, Vienna. As the artistic and intellectual centre of the country, Vienna has been influenced by remarkable figures in history, including Mozart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud. The city houses numerous highlights such as the Ringstrasse, Schwarzenbergplatz, a Viennese square, and the St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Take your trip up a notch and take an optional excursion to the Schönbrunn Palace, one of Vienna’s most beautiful and oldest buildings. Bratislava will be your next stop of your tour. The metropolis combines the quaint offerings of the city’s past and the modern amenities that makes this place fit for shopping, dining and nightlife. The old town reflects the city’s rich history with its maze of cobblestone streets, and the 9th century Bratislava Castle. However, the region doesn’t just showcase Bratislava’s monuments, but also features international boutiques, souvenir shops, numerous cafes and restaurants. The cruise makes a final stop at Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. The prominent tourist destination is famed for the Prague Castle, the St. Vitus Cathedral and Charles Bridge. While here, you should drop by the Old Town Square and watch the Astronomical Clock’s intriguing mechanical performance. www.euholidays.com.sg

TRAVEL REVOLUTION FAIR 2017 BACK WITH A BANG!

Team from New Zealand Tourism

rom the 24th to the 27th of February, consumers packed the halls of Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Halls A and B, searching for the best travel deals. There was a steady stream of visitors over the course of the three days of the Travel Revolution Fair. From Chan Brothers Travel to Tourism New Zealand, the booths of travel agents and national tourism organisations alike were abuzz with activity. Nam Ho Travel, for instance, set up a little booth at the front of their counter to make Spring Onion Taiwanese Pancakes fresh off the stove! A popcorn machine and a photo booth with two different backdrops (you could pick the mystical Northern Lights or the enchanting fall season in Korea) that came with matching costumes such as winter coats and the Korean Hanbok, truly added to the ‘fun

fair’ experience of the event. A new feature of the fair, called the ‘Wanderlust Market’ was a line-up of pop-up stalls selling everything from handmade jewellery from France to artisanal leather bags, cultural artefacts, and whimsical dreamcatchers. Other exhibitors, such as Avis Car Rental – had fun road safety games lined up which allowed participants to win goodies such as a useful RFID card case. As an associated media of the fair, Travel Journal was also at the fair to provide travel fair goers with the opportunity to win hotel stays and redeem goodie bags with freebies such as pens, notebooks, luggage tags, brochures and vouchers for tours by various travel agents. The Travel Journal booth also had an impressive backdrop of a snow-capped mountain in India, proudly sponsored by India Tourism Board, which served as a

photo booth for visitors to the booth to take quirky photos. TRF also organised a series of free travel talks for consumers who were interested in exploring exotic destinations in Africa and learning more about the natural phenomenon, the Northern Lights. Mediacorp artistes such as Shane Pow, Quan Yi Fong, and DJ Chen Biyu had a great time with the crowd sharing with them about their experiences in Mongolia, Korea, and Alaska. The dates for the next TRF aren’t out yet – but keep your eyes on TRF’s official Facebook account for the announcement of the next fair date! http://www.sotaa.sg/
