ABOUT EU HOLIDAYS MISSION • Delighting every travel experience

VISION • Be Travellers’ FIRST choice

VALUES 1. Deliver what we promise 2. Serve customers passionately 3. Do what we do, best 4. Make work fun 5. Care for employees 6. Stay as one big family as we grow 7. Be a good business partner 8. Be socially responsible

PROGRESS AND MILESTONES EU Holidays was founded by a group of experienced directors passionate about their work in the travel industry. They wanted to do something new that could better serve the travel needs of consumers, which is the main driving force behind the establishment of our travel agency. Within five years of business operations, we have expanded EU Holidays and opened up three other subsidiary offices to focus on the various needs of our customers. The EU MICE office was set up in 2013 to cater for corporate travel with a focus on corporate meetings, conventions and events. In that same year, EU Asia was launched to cater for customers who are interested in travelling within Asia. In the following year, we opened up EU Vacations to serve the Malaysian market. In

doing so, EU Holidays strives to constantly improve our products and services so that we can better serve our customers. Despite being a young company, EU Holidays has gained significant recognition from both customers and industry professionals. Founded in late 2010, EU Holidays was voted Top MasterCard Supporter in NATAS Travel for four consecutive years since 2012. Since then, EU Holidays was named the ‘Best Travel Agency for Europe and USA Tours’ as voted by readers of ESCAPE! Magazine. After just two years in the business, EU Holidays was presented with two valuable awards – the Asia Excellence Award 2013 and the Singapore Excellence Award 2013. In 2014, we received the Singapore Quality Brands 2014 award and the Weekender Travellers’ Choice Award as No. 1 for Europe and USA tours, as voted by readers. We continued to be awarded for the next three years by Weekender and held our position as the top travel agency in Singapore. From Tripzillia.sg - Singapore’s No.1 Travel Portal – EU Holidays also acquired excellence awards in “Best for Europe 2015” and “Best for USA 2015”. The coveted award recognises the most outstanding travel companies for their professionalism and experience in the travel industry. EU Holidays Pte Ltd has recently received the prestigious Singapore Trusted Quality Brand 2015 award from the Singapore Enrich Group. In addition, the travel agency has gone through the year-long Customer- Centric Initiative (CCI) program and successfully attained the Singapore Service Class certification under the Ministry of Trade and Industry agency, SPRING Singapore. The agency certifies EU Holidays with the niche Business Excellence (BE) standard for service.

Armenia Garni Temple Armenia offers travellers a deeper understanding of its ancient civilization and is comprised of a number of religious sites, some dating as far back as first century A.D. A fine example of one such structure would be the Garni Temple. Located in Garni, it is the only pagan place of worship in Armenia. Built by the Armenian King Tiridates I, the temple was dedicated to Helios, the Roman god of the sun. Although most of the pagan monuments were destroyed when Armenia adopted Christianity in the early 4th century, the Garni Temple was left alone upon the request of King Tiridates II’s sister. The temple grounds is comprised of several structures, including a royal summer palace, a bath complex and a cemetery.

Etchmiadzin Cathedral Situated in the city of Vagharshapat, the Etchmiadzin Cathedral is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Armenia. It was perceived as a holy place of worship long before Christianity was adopted. The church itself was constructed in the 4th century and is believed to be the oldest Christian cathedral in existence. The building was rebuilt in the 6th and 7th centuries, which consisted of more recent additions in 1654 and 1868. The church also has a number of notable relics, including a lance that pierced the side of Jesus Christ and a wood, dating as far back as 6000 years old, from Noah’s Arc.

Azerbaijan Maiden Tower Also known as Giz Galasi, the Maiden Tower is considered the Eiffel tower of the Old City, Baku. The symbolic landmark is much loved in the city of Azerbaijan. Erected at the coast of Caspian Sea, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. The cylindrical shaped tower stands at 29 metres tall offering rooftop views of Baku Bay, the Old City, the Baku Boulevard and the De Gaulle house. It was built in the 12th century, as part of

the walled city of Baku. The Maiden Tower also houses a museum, which exhibits the history of Baku City.

Georgia Bodbe Monastery Overlooking the beautiful Alazani Valley and the snow-capped Caucasus, the Bodbe Monastery offers travellers with a surreal and picturesque view. Located 2km from the town of Sighnaghi, the Georgian Orthodox monastery was originally built in the 19th century, and was remodelled and rebuilt over time. Besides housing the 4th century Georgians relics, it was also one of the major pilgrimage sites in Georgia.

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral This grand and impressive cathedral was built in the 11th century, and encapsulates Georgian church architecture. Both the interior and exterior of the church is adorned with beautiful and intricate stone carvings that will charm any art enthusiast. Besides its visually pleasing ornamentation, the building is believed to be final resting place of Georgian Kings, and is also said to house Christ’s robe.

From the remains of resplendent empires to the simple pleasures of an afternoon chai, Iran’s timeless beauty is in more than just its attractions.

Tehran at night

A

s a leisure travel destination, choosing to head to Iran may be a bold and perhaps peculiar decision. But strip away the misconceptions, fearmongering media tales of instability, and personal prejudice and you will uncover a country filled with humility and hospitality. A nation made up of many ethnic groups - each influenced by their Greek, Arab, Turkic and Mongol occupants – Iran has so much more than just an exotic culture to offer its visitors.

Tehran

PHOTOS © 123RF

The capital of Iran, Tehran, is the country’s most secular and liberal city. This modern city still carries traces of ancient Persian culture whilst being the political epicentre and heart of the Middle East. The cosmopolitan state stands out from its more conservative counterparts – on the streets you can find relatively bold fashion statements, art galleries, an array of local cuisines, tea shops, and lively bazaars. Despite being one of the more populated areas of Iran, there are plenty of hidden gems to explore if you know where to look. Visit the multitude of national parks, state museums that carry you through the passages of time and sites that witnessed a watershed such as the US Den of Espionage (also known as the former Embassy of the United States in Tehran).

Shiraz Shiraz is synonymous with poetry and elegance. It is also the birthplace of some of Iran’s most celebrated and brilliant poets – Hafez and Saadi - a fact that only seeks

Vakil Bazaar square in the old part of Shiraz

to add to the state’s charm and allure. Some of the most intricate and beautiful pieces of architectures – such as the Vakil Mosque – present Shiraz as a technicolour dreamscape that is essentially a treasure trove of Persian culture and history, ready to sweep you off your feet.

Isfahan Located in central Iran, Isfahan holds beauty in every nook and cranny. The city, in its wealth and glory days of the 17th century, inspired the proverb, ‘Isfahan is half the world’. The Naqsh-e Jahan Square is a standing example of Isfahan’s colossal, antique beauty; it is the largest historical public square in the world, containing two mosques, a palace, and a bazaar. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is surrounded by grand buildings from the Safavid era, making it a true visual feast.

Kashan Brimming with historical

gems, Kashan is easy enough for you to navigate on foot. Visit the Agha Bozorg Mosque to inspect the stunning example of 19th century Iranian-Qajari architecture. A trip to the Tabātabāei House – a traditional house built over 200 years ago – will keep you fascinated for hours. Step into a kaleidoscopic Kashan Bazaar to enjoy multiple cups of chai, explore alleys of shops with abstract designs on various wares, and simply admire the painstakingly detailed work that went into the walls of the market.

Island Hopping in

GREECE You haven’t fully seen and experienced Greece until you’ve visited its offshore islands. With as many as 6,000 islands (both inhabited and uninhabited), here is a brief guide to the select few that no vacationers should miss. Santorini When you think about Greek islands, the first thing that usually comes to mind is Santorini, or more specifically, the crescent-shaped island’s picturesque architecture. Built on a volcano, it overlooks the Aegean Sea and features a complex of unblemished white buildings with bright blue domes (commonly found in the renowned village of Oia, which sits on a cliff). Unlike regular streets that meander through level grounds, Santorini offers narrow, sloped alleys that make journeys around town like one huge hike.

Mykonos Known as the island of the winds, Mykonos is the place for adrenaline-junkies seeking a taste of its water sports. Windsurfing, jet skiing, sea parachuting, sailing, snorkelling and

diving are some of the most thrilling activities to try your hand at. Located at the heart of Cyclades, the history of its formation has been rooted in Greek mythology. After Hercules had slaughtered the giants, he dumped them in a huge pile that eventually petrified over time to form the island that is Mykonos. While there, don’t forget to drop by the Panayia Paraportiani church and the Matoyanni Street.

Corfu Island An island off the coast of Greece, Corfu’s multi-cultural history is rooted in a mix of the French, British and Italian. Sparkling azure waters and classical, vintage spots make this an attractive destination for any visitor of Greece. Some of the more enchanting places to swing by are the medieval castles, the Monastry of Paleokastritsa and Angelokastro,

FEATURE as well as the Old Town, which features the Paris-inspired Liston Street, the Spianada Square and the Venetian fortresses.

Hydra Savour the serenity that this quaint island offers. As part of the Saronic Islands situated in the Aegean Sea, Hydra is a Greek island that seeks to preserve its purity. It has a ban on the usage of neon signs and strictly disallows the construction of modern structures – new buildings have to follow the vintage style of architecture it currently sports. Aside from the occasional rubbish truck, it is illegal to travel by car or motorcycles on the island. So while protecting Mother Nature, you can enjoy simple commutes by donkey or bicycle, perfect for tree-huggers or those seeking an escape from the city life.

Zakynthos Island Within the Ionian Sea lies the Zakynthos Island, the third largest Ionian Island, which is also known as Zante. Get closer to nature as you plunge into a voyage through the beaches along its more mountainous regions. Explore its rugged coves and cliffs, and if you’re lucky, you may bump into one of the resident sea turtles or seals. You can’t miss the Shipwreck Cove, which is known by other names as well such as Smugglers Cove and Navagio Beach. Accessible only by boat, a shipwrecked vessel from 1980 still lies on its shores, an incredible sight that trumps any visit to the museum.

The Timeless

Treasures of Egypt Explore the history of a civilisation through its age-old antiquities

VIEW OF FIRA TOWN - SANTORINI GREECE.

O

nce ruled by what most believed to be the descendents of the gods and goddesses, Egypt was home to the likes of Cleopatra, Tutankhamun, Khufu, and many other Egyptian royalties. Renowned for its abundance of statues, temples and monuments, Egypt’s treasures mystify travellers even to this day. The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx of Giza have long since enchanted the world with their impressive architecture. Although the Pyramids of Giza are a testament to ancient Egyptian planning and ingenuity, it is the Great Pyramid of Giza (also known as the Pyramid of Khufu) that is renowned for its size, structure, and near perfect proportions. It is also one of the oldest and largest pyramids in Egypt and remains largely intact. Built under the rule of King Khufu, it was intended to be the pharaoh’s tomb. The oddly shaped

monument, approx. 480-foot high, houses hundreds of chambers that are yet to be discovered even today. Carved from a mound of natural rock, the Great Sphinx of Giza symbolises strength and wisdom. Unlike the Greek sphinx, which is usually female, the Egyptian sphinx is typically portrayed as a male. In contrast to the malevolent Greek version, the Egyptian sphinx was also depicted as a benevolent figure in history. One common thing between both figures is that they guard places of great importance. Although Egypt isn’t known for its beaches, Hurghada is a renowned scuba diving spot and a popular beach resort town. Home to the Golden Sand & Coral Reefs, the city lures nature-lovers from all walks of life to its diverse and vibrantly coloured coral reefs and abundant marine life. The stunning turquoise waters are excellent for windsurfing and has attracted many tourists over the past decade with its diving and snorkeling activities. Alternatively, you can also visit the city Luxor, where you will be dazzled by the sheer of wealth of its temples and tombs. As a popular destination, Luxor is home to treasures such as the Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple, Valley of Kings and Temple of Hatshepsut. The valuable monuments and antiquities are wonderful sights to explore. The Luxor Temple is among the most beautiful temples in Egypt. It runs close to the river Nile and was dedicated to Amun, the god king. Fronted by the massive statues and

several obelisks, the temple’s latest additions includes a shrine to Alexander the Great, a Roman sanctuary and an Islamic shrine. The main entrance to the temple complex was originally flanked by six colossal statues of Ramesses. If you’d like to learn more about the history of Egypt, the Karnak Temple not only exhibits Egyptian design and architecture, but also provides insight into the lives of pharaohs of ancient Egypt. The massive temple complex dates back over 2,000 years and is comprised of towering columns engraved with hieroglyphs, chapels, and many other ruins. It was once the largest religious monument covering over 200 acres of land and was a sacred place of pilgrimage for nearly 2,000 years. The area of enclosure of Amun alone could hold ten average European cathedrals. Discover more of Egypt’s archaeological sites at the idyllic city of Aswan. Located south of Cairo, Aswan is highly populated yet it is the smallest of the three major cities that is situated on the Nile. It is home to many granite quarries from which most of the obelisks seen in Luxor were sourced. You should visit the Aswan High Dam built across the Nile River. It is known for bringing great benefits to Egyptian farmers and for playing a major role in the country’s power supply. If you still have some time to spare, drop by the Abu Simbel temples, two huge rock temples (The Great Temple and The Small Temple) that were built during the reign of Ramesses II.

South Africa’s Big Five

African Lion With an electrifying gaze that could both entrance and intimidate, this big cat remains to this day one of the most majestic creatures to roam the safari. These natural predators that form the royalty of the animal world hunt in packs and encapsulate what team work means. Vicious whilst in a fight, the lifespan of an average African lion could be reduced to below 14 years due to fatal injuries. But their biggest threat is the hunters who have endangered them as a species.

Symbolic of the wilderness of South Africa, the Big Five are some of the most dangerous and elusive species of the animal kingdom. Coined by game hunters, the term, Big Five, represents the utter difficulty in capturing or even spotting these creatures. Hence, they have become hunting favourites, the coveted target and prize of modern hunters. These are the South African Big Five.

African Leopard It has golden fur embellished with black spots, also known as rosettes that are sometimes circular and other times squareshaped. Fast and furious, this natural beauty is the ultimate athlete with the unrivalled ability to sprint at a speed of 60km/h and leap horizontally over a 6m distance, which is double the distance of their best vertical leap. Thanks to their hide and insane climbing skills, the agile African leopard easily blends into their surroundings and stays out of a reach at the top of a tree.

PHOTO: 123RF/BRADLEY VAN DER WESTHUIZEN, IVAN MATEEV, NICO SMIT, LIENKIE, DONOVAN VAN STADEN

Cape Buffalo Marked by their recognisable horns that are likened to two hooks or one big moustache, Cape Buffalos are not to be messed with. Thanks to its sharp curved weapon, this burly animal has earned a nasty reputation for having fatally wounded more game hunters than any other beast in Africa. When a Cape Buffalo has been spotted, you’ll be hardpressed not to find an ox-pecker bird resting atop the mammal, pecking on its hide to remove parasites.

African Elephant Taking the cake as the world’s largest mammal, these giants average at a weight of about 6,350kg, according to the National Geographic. Known for their gentle nature, African elephants can be a fun bunch to watch especially during bath times when they make use of their trunks to spray water on themselves. While this behaviour may not scare off too many creatures, you wouldn’t want to be near one when it’s agitated. With a mammoth and muscular frame, they could crush you to bits in a second. As they were being widely poached for their ivories, a ban on it has helped protect the species from extinction.

African Rhinoceros The last mammal of the Big Five is the African Rhino that is split into two species, the Black rhino and the White rhino. The Black rhino normally survive as lone rangers, whereas the White rhino goes in groups, which may justify how Black rhinos are dwindling faster in numbers, being easier to corner and capture. Despite the distinction between the two species, rhinos are neither black nor white – they are grey.

TURKEY

An Ancient Trail A fusion of the East and West, Turkey is a Muslim nation with a unique location that touches a part of Europe and Asia. Influenced heavily by the Muslim-centric Ottoman Empire, which was found in the country, it boasts a rich culture and intriguing history. But what wows visitors are the ancient cities and the ruins within that Turkey is replete with. Follow our trail into yesteryears as we highlight the must-visit crowd favourites. Ancient city of Troy

PHOTO: 123RF/SORIN COLAC

It was supposedly where the mythical Trojan War took place. Dating back to about 4,000 years ago, Troy is an ancient city found in the province of Canakkale, Turkey. The iconic site, which inspired Iliad, an epic poem by Homer, was of both historical and cultural significance. It was first inhabited in the early Bronze Age, when a wall was built to protect the citadel. Eventually, the city expanded, including a residential complex, as well as a palace of sorts.

Ancient city of Pergamon Another ancient city to visit is Pergamon, located in northern and western Bergama. The city rose to prominence in the Hellenistic period, from 281BC to 133BC, as the capital of the Attalid dynasty. Revel in what is left of the city’s Sanctuary of Trajan, Atheneum Library and the grandest of all sights, also known as the hallmark of Pergamon architecture, with steep steps and a capacity of about 10,000 people, the Hellenistic Theatre.

Ancient city of Ephesus Situated in the small town of Selcuk in Kusadasi, the ancient city of Ephesus lays in ruins. Though without concrete evidence of the exact date of origin, it is believed that this city has been around since 3,000BC. Located by a valley, it was used as an ancient trading centre, as well as a hub for Christians. Don’t miss the Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), Library of Celsus (built in 125AD), Odeon (a theatre constructed in 150AD) and Temple of Hadrian, all of which are spectacular ancient architecture found in the city.

Goreme Open-air Museum Heading to Cappadocia, make a pit stop at the Goreme Openair Museum. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it boasts a complex of monasteries from the 10th to 12th century. One of its most distinctive features includes its raw, rock façade, which is an incredible sight of odd and almost organic architecture. Beyond the unpolished exterior are detailed frescoes, depicting biblical and angelic characters, whose colour has hardly faded over the years.

Safranbolu Travel back to the ancient times of the Ottoman Empire in the town of Safranbolu, located north of Ankara. Due to its famous traditional Ottoman houses and its key role in the history of the caravan trade, the city has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Old Town of Safranbolu is also home to a plethora of ancient treasures such as well-preserved old buildings and 1008 registered historical artifacts. Here, you may also find the famous Cinci Han, a brooding 17th-century caravanserai that has been converted into a hotel brimming with shops, as well as the Cinci Hamam, a prominent Turkish bath that is still in operation today since the 17th century. Do stroll along the cobbled streets of Safranbolu and admire the graceful, half-timbered houses littered along the sides, many of which have huge water pools to cool the air on warm summer days.

The Must-Do List

DUBAI

Ski in the Mall of the Emirates

1

Dominating all others, the most enthralling spot in all of South America is Machu Picchu. Dating back to the 15th century, the ancient site is allegedly the last Incan city in Peru. Its primeval presence will transport you into the mysterious world of yesteryear. To reach the ruins, you would have to journey 2,430m above the sea level to the top of the mountain. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the abandoned grounds blend into the steep, rocky terrain and green plains. To get the best views, head to the highest point for a panorama of the almost systematically placed rows of stonewalls.

Go for an Exhilarating Desert Safari

2

Escape the city, where concrete land and towering skyscrapers abounds. Why not, for a change, head to the desert in Dubai? Hop on a four-wheel buggy and venture off-track as you speed head-on towards sand dunes, an experience that the adrenalineseeker would find attractive. A package tour includes a mellow camel ride, a belly dancing performance and a sumptuous buffet dinner.

36 Exotic | EU Holidays

Visit the World’s Tallest Building

3

Defeating the Shanghai Tower, One World Trade Centre, John Hancock Centre and the Petronas Towers in height, the world’s tallest man-made structure is Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, standing at 829m. Stand at the base of the building and you’ll feel like the smallest creature on Earth, but ascend to the top observation deck of the skyscraper and you’ll be gifted with a magnificent view of the city landscape. Designed by Adrian Smith, it began construction in Sept 21, 2004 before completion about six years later in 2010.

Visit the World’s Only 7-Star Hotel

4

When you want to feel like royalty, there’s nothing like stepping foot into the world’s most luxurious hotel, known as the Burj Al Arab. Standing alone on an artificial island surrounded by the sea, its mere structure that resembles the shape of a ship’s sail is a sight to behold. Designed by Tom Wright of WKK Architects, the hotel has 28 double-story floors with 202 suites, the largest of which spans an astounding 780 square metres. You would have to be a millionaire to afford a stay at one of its Royal Suites, which is priced at about US$18,000 per night.

Witness a Sunrise on a Hot Air Balloon

5

Forget automobiles, planes, trains and boats. Take to the air on a much more thrilling ride – a hot air balloon. It is the best way to experience and view the sandy horizon of the Dubai desert. Lasting an hour (if the weather permits), the ride will be largely dictated by the direction of the wind, flying to wherever it takes us. Besides the endless expanse of beautiful barren land, you may also catch sight of a few inhabitants of the Arabian desert, including gazelles, oryx and camels. But what makes this voyage extra special is its early take-off time, which allows you to catch the first glow of the sunrise, welcoming the start of a new day.
