WELCOME MESSAGE

TRAVEL REVOLUTION 2017 – THE EVENT: THE ONE PLACE FOR REAL HOLIDAYS Travel Revolution 2017 – The Event will be back for its fifth instalment from the 24th to the 26th of February at Marina Bay Sands Expo Halls A and B. Organised by Singapore Outbound Travel Agents Association (SOTAA), supported by the official card American Express and official insurer AIG, the fair will be open from 11am till 9:30pm daily. Besides spectacular deals and fantastic tour packages, a new addition to the travel fair is the Wanderlust Market - a curated marketplace with over 100 local and overseas artisans showcasing handcrafted goods from fashion accessories, natural beauty products to affordable art and other eclectic items. Those interested in exploring the African and Nordic regions will also get a chance to hear from specialists and experts, who will divulge useful and informative travel advice at the i-Weekly Travel Discovery workshops. In order to tackle the rising concerns on travel agency insolvency, SOTAA has had the foresight to step up to guarantee the refund of payments not covered by travel insurance. Said Ms Kay Swee Pin, president of SOTAA, “This 100% holiday protection for certainty and security is the first of its kind in the industry as travel insurance does not necessarily cover the full amount paid. Bookings must be made with appointed travel agencies during the three-day fair”. Added Ms Kay, “SOTAA has secured personal guarantees from directors of these travel agencies to hold them fully accountable. That said, the truth is we are absolutely confident in the financial standing of our travel agency members participating in the fair”. We look forward to seeing you at Travel Revolution 2017! Jindo Miracle Sea Festival SOUTH KOREA

Once a year, the sea miraculously parts at Jindo Island in Jeollanam-do, allowing visitors to set foot onto the floor of the sea. The extremely low tides cause the sea to part, uncovering a 2.8 kilometre pathway. The Jindo Miracle Sea Festival happens in conjunction with this natural phenomenon, and visitors get to walk the path, collecting seashells and clams. There is also a concert, street performances and art exhibitions to showcase Jindo’s culture and heritage. The torch parade at dawn is one such activity that visitors can partake in; witness fireworks at daybreak, carry a torch in the dark while waiting for the sea to part, and be entertained by a traditional Korean dance.

Omihachiman Sagicho Matsuri JAPAN

Happening in the city of Omihachiman in the Shiga Prefecture, the Sagicho Fire Festival originated in the 16th century, when the newcomers to the region sought to out-do the existing fiery celebrations by organising an even more grandiose fiesta. Gathering at the Himure Hachimangu Shrine, floats constructed with straw, bamboo and paper then compete to win the ‘Best Float’ prize. Once the winner is chosen, all the floats are ceremoniously burned and men wearing elaborate face paint dance wildly, a gesture that pays homage to the warlord, Oda Nobunaga. http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/spot/festival/sagicho.html

DISCOVER NATURE’S SPELLBINDING WONDER

Join the chase and capture sights of the elusive, yet stunning Northern Lights with LGE Travel - Let’s Go Europe.

A

s a renowned phenomenon that’s on every avid traveller’s bucket list, the Aurora Borealis or more commonly known as the Northern Lights, is a natural wonder that has captivated millions around the world. There are several times in a year that are best for viewing the Northern Lights, this include the months November to March. These months are relatively more popular compared to any other months in the year to see the lights. The long winter nights offer a higher chance to witness the unforgettable sights of nature’s greatest wonder. The various hues of colours dancing across the sky, beneath the snow-clad land is stunningly scenic. Besides shorter days, these nights are also accompanied by frigid temperatures. However, if you are unable to withstand the chilly weather, you may opt to visit the Arctic region between September and October. The pristine lakes, which remain ice-free for most of this period, are known to reflect the brilliant colours of the Northern Lights. An interesting fact about the Aurora Borealis is that the naked eye is unable to detect the full spectrum of colours displayed across the sky. It’s the main reason why most only see green hues. However, photographic images are known to capture the broad range of colours filling the Arctic sky, but like most natural phenomenon, the spectrum of colours visible are highly dependent on weather conditions. Because of external factors, catching sight of the elusive Northern Lights can sometimes be next to impossible during a trip to the Arctic. However, if you would like the odds in your favour, booking your trip with LGE Travel - Let’s Go Europe is your best bet. The travel company has achieved a success rate of 95.1 percent between November 2016 and December 2016. They provide the highest chance of catching the Northern Lights among all other itineraries in

UNCOVERING THAILAND’S BEST-KEPT SECRET:

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT You may think you have explored all there is to explore in the Land of Smiles – but

we’re here to introduce you to one of Thailand’s elusive gems: Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Nakhon-Si-Thammarat

Things To Do in Nakhon Si Thammarat

Visit a Waterfall Relish in the beauty of nature when you take a day trip down to one of the many waterfalls in Nakhon Si Thammarat. There is nothing like sitting in the cool waters of a stream, soaking up the sun and getting drenched in the waterfalls, in the middle of a dense rainforest. The ethereal Karom Waterfall Yong Waterfall and Phrom Lok Waterfall are some of the noteworthy beauties to check out. Check Out Khanom’s Art Scene Mr. Suchart Subsin is a shadow puppet maker and performer in the province of Nakhon. Incorporating Thai music, poetry and culture into his work, Mr. Subsin pioneered the delicate craft of shadow puppet performances in Thailand. Ban Nang Talung Suchart Subsin is a museum dedicated to Mr. Subsin’s craft and is a treasure trove of symbolic artefacts.

Aquaint Yourself with the Locals Take a peek into the lives of locals as you set foot into

Kiriwong Village. Located less than an hour away from the airport, this endearing village is an experience like none other. The pace of life in Kiriwong - with its surrounding mountain, slow-moving river, and lush greenery - will make you want to ditch the city life.

Dolphins in Khanom! As one of the main highlights of the small town, it is incredibly easy to book a boat tour to spot the friendly mammals. These creatures are not easily found in other parts of the world, and they only inhabit waters that are extremely clean with a healthy ecosystem.

Travel Back in Time Make a stop at Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, one of the most important and impressive historical sites in Thailand. The great Buddhist pagodas and surrounding buildings are hosts to relics, religious artefacts, architecture, and legends that date back to 291 AD! One of the must-visit districts in Nakhon Si Thammarat is the small, unpretentious and beautiful town of Khanom - still yet to be touched by the fanfare of tourism. Littered with palm trees, paddy fields and rubber tree plantations, Khanom ticks all the right boxes for that authentic, laid-back island life: pristine, sandy white beaches that you can enjoy all to yourself; friendly locals that have yet to be daunted by the flurry of tourists; and tasty local food that will leave you craving for more.

Things To Do in Khanom

Hit the Beach Nadan Beach is 10 kilometers of perfection. The shores are clean and free from crowds – perfect for a time of real rest and relaxation. The town’s only beach bar – CC Beach Bar, a fantastic little place well-stocked with great food and drinks – can be found at this beach. About a 20-minute drive away from Nadan is Ao Thong Yee beach, another solitary piece of paradise. Finding a coastline that is not packed with touts is a rarity, so take the time to enjoy the tranquility. Go Pink Dolphin Sighting Don’t miss out on the chance to snap pictures of Pink

Pink Dolphins

What to Eat

One of the greatest things about Thailand is their ability to serve immensely flavourful dishes. Khanom La is one of the products of the district of Nakhon. It is a light, crispy and airy dessert in a tube-like form, made from flour, eggs and honey. Another signature item is the Khanom Jeen – soft and thin fermented rice noodles. You can drown your Khanom Jeen noodles in your choice of curry (you can also pick multiple flavours!) and have it together with pickled vegetables. Mouth-watering, light, and nothing short of perfection – a bowl of Khanom Jeen is a must-have. Kaeng Som is a tasty fish dish that can be enjoyed as a curry or a soup, brimming with vegetables, served with a side of steamed rice. The dish is a crowd favourite with locals throughout Thailand; it hits all the right notes with its spicy, sour, and sweet elements. Hungry yet?

Where to Stay

Despite the fact that this part of Thailand has yet to see an influx of tourists, there are still plenty of excellent accommodation options to suit every traveler’s budget! Beach-side accommodations include Talkoo Beach Resort, Khanom Golden Beach Hotel, and Le Pes Villas. For more information, visit http://www.tourismthailand. org/sg

INTERVIEW

INSIDE INCREDIBLE INDIA

Get the low-down on the best ways to explore and experience the sensuous beauty of India.

Mr. R.K. Suman, Director of India Tourism Board

D

iscover the exotic and unique blend of flavours that will take you on a journey steeped in culture and tradition. Travel Journal interviews Mr Suman, the Singapore Representative of India Tourism Board, for the most up-to-date travel information one needs to effectively navigate around India. Could you describe India in a sentence? India is a country that has a spectacular mixture of tradition, culture and landscapes, it never fails to surprise anyone who is ready to unravel some of the deepest mysteries of India. What do you think are some of the key selling points of India tourism? There are definitely nice sceneries like snowy peaks, deep historical roots and diverse cultures. We found out that more and more tourists are embarking on an trip to India, and recently we introduced medical tourism, which includes Ayurvedic treatment. Tourism in India is gaining popularity in the recent years, are there any future plans or strategies to enhance the travel experience to India for Singapore tourists? To provide a more convenient access for tourists in Singapore, there will be more direct flights to Goa and Amritsar by AirAsia, Scoot and Tiger Airways. In the near future, Singapore Airlines will also be adding Jaipur (known as the Pink City) to their latest route network. Are there any iconic festivals that our readers should take note of? The most prominent festivals would be Deepavali (Festival of Lights), that ranges from one to three days in different provinces, Durga Puja in October and in the month of March, the Festival of Colors. There are also different festivals celebrated across regions and provinces such as the hot air balloon festival in Munnar.

Crows Lake in North Sikkim

Are there any places or attractions that you would highly recommend to travellers planning a trip to India? Honestly, this is an extremely difficult question to answer (laughs). Every province of India embraces different cultures and of course different architectural wealth, hence almost every part of India have something to interest the tourists. Which places would you recommend to travellers who have never visited India? I would definitely recommend India’s Golden Triangle formed by Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, as it is the country’s most popular tourist circuit. The cities emanate a unique charm, offering an unforgettable travel experience to first-time visitors. Speaking of India’s Golden Triangle, I’m guessing that no one should miss the beauty of Taj Mahal? Yes, it is one of the most splendid masterpieces in the world, the imposing and grand mausoleum comprises of white marble and was built in Agra between 1631 and 1648. I always believe that every heritage site in the world illustrates an incredible story, and you will only be able to truly appreciate the beauty after knowing the history of the place. For instance, the Taj Mahal was built by the grief stricken Emperor Shahjahan in memory of his beloved wife. Shahjahan invited master craftsmen from as far as Italy and Persia to aid in the design of his ambitious tribute to his late wife. In 1983, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and

“India is a country that has a spectacular mixture of tradition, culture and landscapes, it never fails to surprise anyone who is ready to unravel some of the deepest mysteries of India.” was cited as the jewel of Muslim art in India. I understand that the Taj Mahal is accessible via three gates, which entrance should independent travellers use to avoid the crowd? First of all, you need to be early, since well-known historical heritage sites are obviously places of interest tourists flock to. However, independent travellers can easily avoid the crowd by entering from the south gate, as tour groups mainly enter from the east and west gates. What advice would you give to travellers preparing for their first trip to India? Remember to prepare winter clothing if you are visiting India during the winter season. Besides that, prior to your trip, you should do enough research and get a licensed travel guides to take you around the country. Finally, touching on the topic that most Singaporeans would be interested in, what are the best things to buy when shopping in Delhi? Handicrafts like painting, accessories, leathercraft are worth buying. The diverse culture and tradition in India has inspired the creation of these handicrafts, which exhibit high-quality craftsmanship. Besides that, the customised clothing is another highlight, they are cheap and fuss-free. www.http://incredibleindia.org/

Armenia Garni Temple

“Armenia offers travellers a deeper understanding of its ancient civilization and is comprised of a number of religious sites, some dating as far back as first century A.D.”

Armenia offers travellers a deeper understanding of its ancient civilization and is comprised of a number of religious sites, some dating as far back as first century A.D. A fine example of one such structure would be the Garni Temple. Located in Garni, it is the only pagan place of worship in Armenia. Built by the Armenian King Tiridates I, the temple was dedicated to Helios, the Roman god of the sun. Although most of the pagan monuments were destroyed when Armenia adopted Christianity in the early 4th century, the Garni Temple was left alone upon the request of King Tiridates II’s sister. The temple grounds is comprised of several structures, including a royal summer palace, a bath complex and a cemetery.

Etchmiadzin Cathedral

Situated in the city of Vagharshapat, the Etchmiadzin Cathedral is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Armenia. It was perceived as a holy place of worship long before Christianity was adopted. The church itself was constructed in the 4th century and is believed to be the oldest Christian cathedral in existence. The building was rebuilt in the 6th and 7th centuries, which consisted of more recent additions in 1654 and 1868. The church also

has a number of notable relics, including a lance that pierced the side of Jesus Christ and a wood, dating as far back as 6000 years old, from Noah’s Ark.

Haghpat Monastery

Situated in the Haghpat, Armenia, the Haghpat monastery along with the nearby Sanahin monastery was recognised as an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Dating back to the medieval era, approximately in the year 976, it once housed the largest collection of manuscripts. It is the finest example of Armenian architecture that still stands to this day. This ancient attraction also provides a picturesque view of the Debed River in the northern the Lori region. Although it is positioned to offer an ideal vantage point, the monastery itself is not located on a peak, but sits halfway up

ocated between the Black Sea to the west and the Caspian Sea to the east, Caucasus is occupied by Southern Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia. Besides housing these places, the mountainous area is home to Mount Elbrus, Europe’s highest peak. Thanks to its historical highlights and its cultural insights, Caucasus’ tourism has steadily increased over the years.

on a hill away from prying eyes. The complex also contains several cross-stones from the 11th-13th century, walls with Armenian inscriptions, and other artefacts.

Azerbaijan Maiden Tower

Also known as Giz Galasi, the Maiden Tower is considered the Eiffel tower of the Old City, Baku. The symbolic landmark is much loved in the city of Azerbaijan. Erected at the coast of Caspian Sea, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. The cylindrical shaped tower stands at 29 metres tall offering rooftop views of Baku Bay, the Old City, the Baku Boulevard and the De Gaulle house. It was built in the 12th century, as part of the walled city of Baku. The Maiden Tower also houses a museum, which exhibits the history of Baku City.

Shirvanshah’s Palace

The 15th century palace, which is housed in the inner City of Baku, is believed to be a masterpiece of Azerbaijan architecture from the Shirvanshah dynasty. The main building was built in 1411 by Shirvanshah Sheykh Ibrahim I. Originally,

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

the palace building comprised of 52 rooms; the upper floors were occupied by the shah and his family, while the servants and others resided on the lower. There are two buildings located in the lower courtyard of the complex: the tomb and the Shah Mosque. The lowest courtyard of the site accommodates the palace bathhouse. As all bathhouses in the Old City, this was built underground to ensure that the temperature was kept constant.

Georgia Bodbe Monastery

Overlooking the beautiful Alazani Valley and the snowcapped Caucasus, the Bodbe Monastery offers travellers with a surreal and picturesque view. Located 2km from the town of Sighnaghi, the Georgian Orthodox monastery was originally built in the 19th century. Besides housing the 4th century Georgians relics, it was also one of the major pilgrimage sites in Georgia.

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

This grand and impressive cathedral was built in the 11th century, and encapsulates Georgian church architecture.

Both the interior and exterior of the church is adorned with beautiful and intricate stone carvings that will charm any art enthusiast. Besides its visually pleasing ornamentation, the building is believed to be final resting place of Georgian Kings, and is also said to house Christ’s robe.

Narikala Fortress

Also known as the Mother Fortress of Tbilisi, the Narikala Fortress is seated on a steep hill overlooking the capital of Georgia. The structure has long since remained as an ancient symbol of Tbilisi’s defence. Although established in the 4th century, the Arabs extended the fortress further in the 7th and 8th centuries. Snowsledding at Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival

A KOREAN WINTER WONDERLAND

Experiencing the coldest season of the year in Korea as a local would WORDS BY: GIGI FOK In January, I had the privilege of embarking on a wintry adventure to Korea, thanks to Korea Tourism Organization. In theory, I was familiar with the many different winter festivals, but experiencing the real deal was something else altogether! Over the course of five days, I traversed the mountainous areas of Hwacheon, Pyeongchang and Jeongseon, embarked on exciting adventures and acquainted my tastebuds to mouth-watering Korean delights.

Day 1

I arrived at Seoul, Incheon International Airport, thrilled to begin my journey. After meeting up with my friendly tour guide, we set off for Hwacheon. Located in the Gangwon Province, Hwacheon is one of the nine provinces in Korea. Before we headed off to the Hwacheon Sancheoneo (Mountain Trout) Ice Festival, we tucked into some delicious Dubu Jeongol (tofu stew), which consisted of simple, yet surprisingly flavourful ingredients. When we reached the festival, the temperature dropped to a record low of -15 degree Celsius, making it the perfect day for ice fishing. Participants were provided with a fishing rod and some bait to fish for trout from a small hole in the ice. Lowering my rod into the icy waters, I bobbed the bait up and down, in impatience and excitement. I felt a tug on the rod, and

was about to pull out what I had thought would be my first catch, but to my dismay the fish had swam away. However, I did manage to successfully nab a couple of fish for dinner. Off the menu, we also ordered some spicy and sour-tasting trout, as well as trout sushi! Another exciting activity that was scheduled for the day was hand fishing, where each participant was given three chances to catch a fish with their bare hands. Other must-try activities at this festival include snowboarding and ice-sledding. After partaking in a number of exciting activities, I was famished! I stuffed myself with barbequed pork chops at a restaurant called Mugunghwa. The original and the signature spicy pork dish was superb and was grilled using coal and hardwood, leaving the meat tender with a smoky aftertaste. Before retiring for the night, we explored the tranquil village, which was lighted up by 27,000 (equal to Hwacheon population) trout-lanterns. These charming lanterns were made by the retirees of the small town, as part of the government’s initiative to provide jobs to retirees and to attract more tourists into the town.

Day 2

We woke up early for breakfast, then made our way to the Alpensia Ski Resort, one of the venues for the 2018

Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The resort is comprised of 171 rooms and accommodates up to 3000 guests. It is famous for its water park and its world-class skiing facilities. Approximately 98 percent of its infrastructure is ready for the Olympics. The sheer size of the stadium – it seats 11,000 – was astounding. We took a cable car up to the Ski Jump Tower platform and were greeted by a scenic vista of the surroundings. The dangerously steep platform lets skiers take off at high speeds and as far as 125 meters. We stopped for lunch at one of the oldest restaurants at Hwangtae Hall. We savoured the pollock fish, a local favourite, which can only be found in regions with a cooler climate. The chewy delicacy is topped with a red pepper sauce, and is considered to be a high-nutrient, lowcholesterol dish that can be enjoyed generously without worry. After lunch, we visited the Daegwallyeong Sky Ranch. Founded in 1974, the facility has been open to the public since 2014. The ranch, which is well-preserved and free of pollution, provides you with scenic sights of the surroundings. Besides offering picturesque views, the site provides optimal conditions to produce the finest breed of Korean cows called Hanu. A short walk from the Sky Ranch will take you to the sheep farm (that looks like it is straight out of a children’s storybook)

where we got to feed some adorable sheep! I also got to visit the Traditional Korean Food Culture Experience Center in Jeong Gang Won. An interesting architectural fact about this traditional village is that it was built with wood – but without any nails to secure the pieces together. While here, I also got to make my own bibimbap for dinner!

Day 3

The next day we made our way to High1 Resort, a leisure resort that provides a relaxing getaway from the bustling city life. The Go-Go Ski Festival is held at the High1 Resort in the coldest month of winter. It is equipped with top-class skiing facilities and also provides skiing lessons for beginners. In the -11-degree weather, I geared up and nervously headed to the ski grounds to ski down the steep snowy slopes. My incredibly helpful coach guided me on the dos and don’ts of skiing. In addition to teaching me how to maintain the correct body posture, gliding down a slope and slowing down, he also taught me how to fall safely and pick myself up after. After my mini-skiing adventure, which left me quite winded, I was thankful for lunchtime – juicy pork cutlets at the food court! The tour group then headed to the Hanbo Coal Mine, a leading coal mine back in 1980’s. It had stopped operations since 2008 when the coal industry was replaced

Then, we popped into the Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival, which is held for 10 days annually. The 24-year old festival was started by locals who found the amount of snow on the ground unbearable, and decided to make snow sculptures. Today, the festival is a fun competition amongst expert sculptors and university students, who use this opportunity to showcase their amazing talents. Last year, the festival attracted 50,000 visitors over a ten-day period. To facilitate easy travel to the festival, a special ‘Snow Train’ is designated to take visitors to Taebaek.

Day 4

In the morning, we started off the day with a visit to the Samtan Art Mine – a coal mine that operated from 1964 till 2001, when the mining industry was at its heyday. It is now a site primarily used for filming purposes, and over the years it has filmed many popular dramas and TV programs such as Descendents of the Sun and Running Man. The Samtan Art Mine is a large building which plays host to an art gallery, a cave gallery, restaurant and also serves as an accommodation for artists and tourists. We saw an old lift that could hold up to 400 people and went down as deep as 650 meters. Once you reached the bottom of the pit, you could step into the lives of miners as you walk through the abandoned shower spaces and boot-washing areas. I was surprised to learn that they even had a little hall in which miners could get married in to save cost! After a tour of the museum, we went to the Learning how to ski at Jeongseon 5-Day market, High1 Resort which is held on every 2nd, 7th, 12th, 17th, 22nd and 27th of each month. The bustling street comes to life as locals gather at this market to purchase items such as traditional mountain herbs and vegetables. If you’re not planning on getting any greens, then perhaps the wide-selection of delectable, authentic Korean food will keep you (and your stomach) happy for hours. Alternatively, you could also munch on

Arirang Village

some ddukbokki (spicy rice cakes), hot pancakes, or a bowl of Kotdeungchigi noodles. We ended a day with a trip to Arii Hills (Byeongbangchi Skywalk), which is situated at the top of Byeongbangsan Mountain. We stood on the Byeongbangchi Skywalk, an observation deck extending site from the side of a cliff, and indulged in the stunning views of the mountain terrains. We also had an unhindered view of the “U” shape curve of the idyllic Sahaengcheon Stream. On my final day in Korea, I reminisced my time in this dynamic country as I made my way to the airport.

Hopefully next winter I’ll be back to embark on more memorable adventures! Special thanks to Ms. Irin Lin (Korea Tourism Organization); Ms. MJ and Jenny (Korea Tourism Board); Director of Taebaek City Hall, Park Si-Hyun and Chairman of Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival. NAVIGATING THE SCENIC ROADS OF NEW ZEALAND

Discover a fantastical land that will stimulate your senses and ignite your imagination.

CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD CANTERBURY, LAKE TEKAPO

T

he sight of thriving foliage, gentle rolling hills and snowcapped mountains, leaves you in awe as you take a leisurely drive down the scenic roads of New Zealand. The picturesque scenery can be seen for miles, and after each gentle bend in the road your decision to selfdrive around this immense country would feel like the best decision you have made in your entire life. With the help of navigational devices such as, GPS, the prospect of independent travel has not only become more tempting, but has also risen in popularity as self-drive packages and tours are becoming more preferable amongst travellers in the past few years. Being a self-drive destination, New Zealand has made tremendous efforts to encourage safe driving as well as to raise awareness about driving rules. These efforts are further bolstered by providing travellers with driving itineraries that cover various sites of New Zealand in days or even close to a month, depending on the duration of their visit. The freedom and flexibility one experiences when embarking on these tours is unparalleled, and it imbues one with confidence to tour a foreign land independently. The terrain in New Zealand is diverse, ranging from rugged plains to vast flat grasslands, and if you would like to experience the entirety of this magnificent country on a relatively faster pace, do consider renting a car to save time, and to enjoy the surreal surroundings from the comforts of your vehicle. Depending on what piques your interest, New Zealand offers different perspectives of what the country consists of. Major areas of the country have their own charms and popular attractions that draw people from both near and afar.

An Adventure to the North Island

There are various locations in the North Island of New Zealand that have noteworthy highlights, accessible via The Thermal Explorer Highway - an impressive route in and of itself. One such place is Rotorua, a geothermal city known for its geysers and thermal mud pools. Visitors can gaze the Pohutu geyser, in the Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley, erupting scalding water 30 metres into the air up to 20 times throughout the day. The town is steeped in Maori culture, and holds cultural performances that are as entrancing as the thermal landscape itself. Continue down the route to Lake Taupo, which houses the famous Huka Falls, as well as the 10-meter high Maori rock craving at Mine Bay. The rock craving has become a prominent cultural site, and can only be reached by boat. In addition, wary travellers can make their way to the Tokaanu Thermal Pools, in Lake Taupo, to rejuvenate themselves after a long journey. Drivers have a choice between taking The Pacific Coast Highway or the Twin Discovery Tour Route to return back to Auckland. The Pacific Coast will provide spectacular views of the coastlines that stretches as far as the horizon, whereby the Twin Discovery Tour Route will cover the regions’ best spots, such as the Bay of Islands and New Zealand’s Far North amongst other memorable destinations in one drive.

New Zealand

New Zealand

Explore the chilly wintry wonderland of New Zealand, as you take the “Treasured Pathway” or Marlborough Nelson Heritage route, and settle your eyes on the snowclad mountains of the South Island that will leave you shuddering in astonishment. Those keen on driving on this route will begin their journey in Picton, if they are coming from the North Islands. The quaint port town provides ferry service between the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Cruise along Queen Charlotte Drive that links the twisty roads of Picton and Havelock. Once reaching Havelock, drivers should set some time aside to make stopovers at spots marked with the sign, “lookout”, and indulge in the captivating sights in the vicinity. This is especially true when looking out from Cullens Point, relish in the splendour of sparkling turquoise blue seas cradled by golden brown sands. On the other hand, if you would like to cross the rugged terrains of New Zealand’s

DISCOVER NEW ZEALAND’S BEST WITH SA TOURS Embark on an adventure like none other.

F

riendly locals, jaw-dropping sights, endless activities, and home to the beautiful Maori culture; New Zealand is, without a doubt, every traveller’s dream destination. We’ve rounded up some of the many sights that you absolutely must see during your time in New Zealand.

Christchurch to Queenstown

As part of the UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve (which recognises a piece of land for its fine quality of starry nights), the town of Lake Tekapo is a three-hour drive from Christchurch. The lake of the same name is a unique shade of turquoise, getting its colour from the rock-flour (ground by the surrounding glaciers) which can be found in the waters. The solitary and beautiful Church of the Good Sheperd can be found on the shores of the lake, and from here you will be able to revel in the sights of the Southern Alps. In Queenstown, turn back time as you step on board the 104-year old TSS Earnslaw steamship that will take you through the impossibly beautiful Lake Wakatipu, overlooking the scenic Queenstown. Watch the stokers fuel the steamship and listen to the sound of the steam engines doing their job as you sail along the serene lake.

Visit Icy Glaciers

Fox Glacier refers to both a village as well as the icy glacier. The glacier descends from the Southern Alps into a rainforest, providing visitors with an easy access to its terminal face. There are a multitude of guided tours available for those who wish to explore the majestic Fox Glaciers - from helicopter rides around the region to assisted hikes. The Franz Joself Glacier is another spectacular glacier that is also a World Heritage Site. For a truly memorable holiday, embark on a Franz Josef Glacier Heli-Hike Tour, which provides visitors with panoramic views of the west coast glacier landscape whilst on a helicopter, followed by a guided hike to the most intact and natural glacier spots.

WAITOMO GLOW WORM CAVES

HOT AIR BALLOON RIDES IN CANTERBURY PLAINS

Hobbiton Movie Set

Many visitors to New Zealand are also avid fans of the critically-acclaimed fantasy trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. The country became that much more popular after the fantasy series filmed a bulk of the scenes in Matamata, a rural town in the North Island. Visitors can embark on a Hobbiton Movie Set Tour where they will learn more about how the set was created.

Adventures with Hobbits and Caves

Waitomo is the place to be for adventure junkies. The Waitomo Caves offer Black Water Rafting, a magical expedition with glow worms, guided walking tours through the Ruakuri and Aranui Caves, as well as a journey through Middle-earth. The Glow Worm Caves is a novel activity on your itinerary – a boat ride will take you through the caves as the glow worms illuminate your path below ground, turning the caves into a dazzling starry wonderland. Enjoy the fascinating sight of what seem to be a million stars – but in actuality are the many glow-worms that live in the cave. Fans of the Lord of the Rings will get to walk through the private farm that was transformed into The Shire for Sir Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. There are plenty of picture opportunities for lovers of the series as you explore 12 acres worth of iconic locations.

HOBBITON MOVIE SET

Maori Hangi Dinner & Concert

Get a taste of the Maori culture by visiting Te Puia, the centre for Maori culture and geothermal wonders. You will be able to see the Pohutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the southern hemisphere. Meet the Te Arawa tribe and watch the Powhiri, a traditional Maori welcoming ceremony. In the evening, enjoy a cultural performance filled with captivating facts about the Maori’s Past and ta moko (tattoo art), and top off the experience with a traditional hangi meal. A HASSLE-FREE JOURNEY TO THE HIMALAYAS

Dal Lake, Srinagar.

T

he Himalayas has always been known for its astounding beauty and imposing peaks. The thought of spending your vacation on the highest mountain range in the world may seem daunting, since the common misconception among most people is that this renowned destination is best experienced through hours of strenuous hiking and trekking. However, the improved infrastructure and extensive network of roads connecting to the surrounding regions has made Himalayas easily accessible by foot and by vehicle. The destination that once drew intrepid and adventurous travellers is now also becoming a vacation spot for visitors who would like a more slow-paced trip. Spanning thousands of miles across five countries: Nepal, Bhutan, China (Tibet), and Pakistan, the Himalayas can be divided, from the South to the North, into the Outer or Shivalik Himalayas, the Lower Himalayas, the High Himalayas and the Trans Himalayas. The Shivalik Himalayas consists of intriguing places such as Jammu, Dharamsala, and Shimla. Whereas the Lower Himalayan range includes the scenic valleys of Kashmir, Kullu-Manali Valley, and Kathmandu.

by Raja Bahu Lochan when he witnessed a tiger and a goat drinking water from the Tawi River. He believed that the nonaggression displayed by both creatures would inspire people to live peacefully with each other if the fort was build there. Dharamsala, a city in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh is situated on the edge of the Himalayas and as such, is enclosed by lofty cedar trees and lush greenery. This exquisite Himalayan city is also the home to the Dalai Lama and Tibetans in exile. One of the most visited attractions in Dharamsala is the Shiva-Baijnath Temple, which was built in the 13th century. Shimla too has its fair share of major attractions and mustvisit sites. The capital of Himachal Pradesh has retained its colonial heritage through the years. The Viceregal Lodge, for instance, not only stands as a testament to Shimla’s pastShimla was the former summer capital of the British- but also reflects the impressive history and architecture of the city. The Viceregal Lodge, or Rashtrapati Niwas was once the residence of the British Viceroy of India.

The Lower Himalayan Range

Cool summer air, alpine scenery, and placid lakes create an ambience of tranquillity and serenity for travellers visiting Kashmir. Dubbed “India’s Switzerland,” the region attracts tourists from near and far to discover and explore its enchanting sights. One of the most visited locations include Dal Lake in Srinagar, known as the Jewel in the Crown of Kashmir and Srinagar’s Jewel, this expansive and tranquil lake reflects the vibrantly coloured houseboats-also known as shikaras- floating on its surface with mirror-like clarity.

The Shivalik Himalayas

One of the most visited attractions in Jammu is the Bahu Fort. Located 5 km away from the city center, the fort stands prominently on a rock face on the left bank the river Tawi. Estimated to be 3000 years old, the Bahu Fort was built

The Lower Himalayan Range.

Numerous houseboats are embellished with intricate designs, and painted with striking hues of yellow, blue and green. These small yet durable shikaras carry up to four people at one time. However, travellers looking for a more immersive experience can board one of the many opulently fashioned deluxe houseboats, which are much bigger in size and include dining areas, bedrooms, and washrooms-basically a floating hotel that comes with all the conventional amenities. Much like the paradisal city of Kashmir, the Kullu Valley is an idyllic location cradled by the Pir Panjal Range to the north. Raging rivers, charming mountain villages and thick pine forests captivate travellers from near and far. Manali is a high-altitude Himalayan resort town and the gateway to Lahaul and Spiti. The town’s positioning makes it an ideal place for backpacking and is noted for being a romantic honeymoon destination. With a population of over a million people, Kathmandu -the capital city of Nepal- is the biggest metropolis in the Central Region. Some of its popular spots include, Pashupatinath Temple, National Museum of Nepal, and Kathmandu Durbar Square-a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The High Himalayas

The High Himalayas, also commonly referred to as the Tibetan Plateau, is notable for its snow-capped peaks and passes that reach up to 3200m in height. It comprises of regions such as Ladakh, Tibet as well as Spiti Valley, which are known for their natural beauty. Steeped in culture and folklore, these regions are home to a significant number of temples, monasteries and palaces. In addition to housing timeless and historic buildings, the region is also inhabited by various ethnic groups living in quaint villages. Tibet impresses travellers with the rich history, culture and tradition of the Tibetan people. Whereas places such as Ladakh and Spiti Valley boasts sweeping views of rugged terrains and dramatic, arid mountains that exude a kind of blissful remoteness that inspires quiet contemplation and introspection. Filled with stunning natural beauty and unforgettable sights steeped in history, traversing the Himalayas has always been believed to be laborious. However, in recent years the growing infrastructure has paved well-connected routes that provide accessibility, making exploration of this once challenging mountain range much easier.
