MAKING GOOD ON A PROMISE PUT IN PLACE UPON HIS HIRING, JON HAMMOND, A NATIVE OF ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND, HAS RETURNED THE WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY RIFLE TEAM TO NATIONAL GLORY, IMPLEMENTING A STRATEGY FOR SUCCESS THAT HAS SEEN THREE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SIX SEASONS, FOUR INDIVIDUAL NCAA TITLES, FIVE CONSECUTIVE GREAT AMERICAN RIFLE CONFERENCE (GARC) CHAMPIONSHIPS, TWO UNDEFEATED SEASONS, 69 NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION (NRA) ALL-AMERICA HONORS AND EIGHT CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA RECOGNITIONS.

The 2013-14 Season

Despite the graduation of three-time NCAA Champion Petra Zublasing, the Mountaineers did not skip a beat in 2013-14, as Hammond led the Mountaineers to their second straight National Championship, pushing the program’s total to a nation-best 16, and a perfect 10-0 record. Ranked No. 1 for the majority of the season, there was little doubt WVU would successfully defend its national title, as the team owned a 17-shot lead after the first day of competition, winning its first smallbore title under Hammond with a 2338 score. The Mountaineers secured the NCAA title with a first place, 2367 air rifle score, giving them a two-day total of 4705, an NCAA Championships’ record. WVU became the first team to win consecutive NCAA titles since Alaska-Fairbanks won three straight from 2006-08. Three Mountaineers shot in each discipline final, with Maren Prediger and Garrett Spurgeon finishing second in air rifle and smallbore, respectively.

Prior to the team’s national title victory, the squad scored its fifth straight GARC championship, shooting 4700. WVU is the only team to win five straight GARC titles. Additionally, Prediger won the GARC air rifle title, and Spurgeon scored three All-GARC First Team honors. The Mountaineers claimed 14 All-GARC honors.

HEAD COACH Ninth Season 28

JonHammond

Seven Mountaineers earned a combined 10 NRA All-America awards, while four were named to the College Rifle Coaches’ Association (CRCA) All-America Teams sponsored by Lapua. Additionally, Hammond was named the Rifle Winter 2014 CaptainU Coach of the Year. Again, success in the classroom also was achieved, as Thomas Kyanko was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Second Team, his second career honor. WVU has now had at least one honoree in each of the last five seasons.

2009-13

Returning to the range after a 2011-12 season that saw WVU finish sixth at the NCAA Championships, Hammond rallied his squad in his seventh season around 2012 Olympian Zublasing and a core of young, talented shooters, navigated a difficult schedule and earned the program’s second National Championship in five years. Ranked No. 1 nationally throughout the duration of the season, the Mountaineers overcame a one-shot smallbore deficit and a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships en route to winning the air rifle team title and bringing the National Championship trophy back to Morgantown for a nation-best 15th time. Zublasing was instrumental in securing WVU’s victory, as she swept the individual titles and earned the tag as the CRCA Shooter of the Match. She became the first shooter to win both NCAA titles at one championship since 2001, and the second WVU student-athlete to win three career national titles in any sport. Hammond was named the CRCA Coach of the Year, his second career honor. WVU scored 12 NRA All-America honors, including seven combined first-team accolades. WVU also won its fourth straight GARC title. Zublasing was named the GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year, and Spurgeon earned the GARC Rookie of the Year honor.

Following the national championships, six Mountaineers earned eight NRA All-America honors, including first team air rifle and smallbore marks for Zublasing, while Hammond was named the NRA Distinguished College Coach for the second time. Zublasing also earned a spot on the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Second Team.

Posting an 11-2 overall record and a 5-1 conference mark, the Mountaineers successfully defended their GARC title and also swept the air rifle and smallbore titles. WVU was the first conference team to repeat as champions since Nebraska (2006, ’07). Campriani, the individual air rifle, smallbore and combined score champion, was named the GARC Shooter and Senior of the Year. Following the season, Campriani and classmate Andy Lamson were named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Men’s AtLarge First and Second Teams, respectively. Campriani was the third Mountaineer in program history to receive the first-team honor. Hammond coached a talented, upperclass-laden squad to an 11-0 record in 2010, the team’s first undefeated season since 2001, and a GARC regular-season title. The Mountaineers followed their unblemished regular season with a win at the GARC Championships and a sweep of the discipline titles. The victory was the program’s fourth overall and first since 2000. At his first GARC Championships, transfer Campriani won the smallbore, air rifle and combined score titles, and the Mountaineers earned 18 All-GARC honors, including eight first-team awards. Hammond was named the GARC Coach of the Year, his second distinction in three seasons. WVU concluded the 2010 campaign with a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships; the Mountaineers, ranked No. 1 in the nation for the majority of the season, finished third in smallbore and fifth in air rifle. WVU placed two in the smallbore finals, and following the championships, seven student-athletes earned 12 All-America honors.

The Early Years

Hammond made a name for himself in the coaching ranks in 2009, as he took a young, rising WVU squad to the NCAA Championships and returned with the program’s 14th trophy. A season that was built on momentum, WVU went 11-1 overall, earned its first No. 1 CRCA ranking in over a decade, had seven student-athletes earn NRA All-America honors, improved its GARC standing and finished second at the league championship, captured the nation’s air rifle championship and won the aforementioned NCAA title.

COACHING STAFF

Prior to their postseason victories, the Mountaineers put together an 11-1 regular-season record, with the team’s only loss a narrow 47044695 defeat at GARC rival Kentucky. WVU established two NCAA records, shooting a winning 4720 score over Ole Miss at the WVU Rifle Range on Nov. 9 and tallying a 2381 air rifle score at NCAA Qualifiers, in Columbus, Ohio, on Feb. 17. The team also shot a school-record 2348 smallbore score at Army on Oct. 7 and against Memphis, in Morgantown, on Oct. 16. Additionally, Zublasing shot school records in smallbore (595) and aggregate score (1193). The season ended with Zublasing (second team) and Kyanko (third team) earning Academic All-America awards. Tasked with maintaining the Mountaineers’ level of success with a young team recovering from the loss of seven seniors, Hammond rose to the challenge in 2011-12. Nationally ranked in the top three all year, WVU bounced back from a regular-season loss to Kentucky to grab its third straight GARC title. The Mountaineers, winners of the GARC Sportsmanship Award, also won the air rifle title and were paced by Zublasing, the discipline champion and GARC Shooter of the Year. Additionally, Kyanko was named the GARC Rookie of the Year, and the squad earned 12 AllGARC honors. The team, boasting a 12-2 record, including a 5-1 mark in conference action, advanced to the NCAA Championships for the sixth straight season and placed sixth. Zublasing won the air rifle title, becoming the second Mountaineer to win the discipline title in as many years. As a team, WVU finished second in air rifle and eighth in smallbore.

Leading a team that boasted seven seniors, five of whom comprised his first Mountaineer recruiting class, the 2010-11 season was another championship year for Hammond. Though narrowly edged by GARC rival Kentucky at the 2011 NCAA Rifle Championships, the Mountaineers, ranked No. 1 in the nation throughout the season, won the air rifle team title and finished second overall in smallbore. Additionally, Nicco Campriani won the NCAA air rifle title, the first WVU shooter to earn a national championship since 1997. Campriani also finished second in the smallbore competition. All told, the Mountaineers earned a combined five top-five air rifle and smallbore finishes, and six shooters scored eight NRA All-America honors.

The Mountaineers’ 2009 national-title run was especially noteworthy given the pressure the team overcame. After a poor smallbore showing on the championships’ first day, WVU found itself in sixth place. Hammond’s team regrouped and put forth a strong air rifle showing, with all four competitors finishing in the top 10. Additionally, Hammond’s squad was strong at the 2009 GARC Championships, as Tommy Santelli finished first overall, second in air rifle and fifth in smallbore. In total, WVU had seven top-10 finishes between the two disciplines. For his efforts all season, Hammond earned his first CRCA Coach of the Year honor. In only his second year as head coach, Hammond led the 2007-08 rifle squad to an 8-3 record, a third-place finish at the GARC Championships and a sixth-place standing at the NCAA Championships, the Mountaineers’ first appearance in six seasons. Hammond guided five Mountaineers to NRA smallbore All-America honors that season and also earned individual recognition, as he was named the GARC Coach of the Year and listed as the 2008 NRA Distinguished College Coach. Hammond took over the Mountaineer rifle program upon the retirement of long-time coach Marsha Beasley in 2006. That season, he guided the 2006-07 team to its first winning record (6-4) since 2003.

Academic Achievements

A strong proponent for achievement at the range and in the classroom, Hammond’s shooters have proven to be well-rounded student-athletes. Since his arrival in the fall of 2006, 46 Mountaineers have earned a spot on the annual CRCA All-Academic Honor List, including a program-best seven student-athletes in 2011 and 2013. The Mountaineers also have been well represented on the annual CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Teams, with at least one student-athlete earning an honor in each of the last five straight seasons. Kyanko earned his second career honor in 2014, as he was named to the Men’s At-Large Second Team; he scored a spot on the third team in 2013. Zublasing concluded her career with consecutive honors, as she was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Second Team in 2012 and 2013. Campriani became the program’s third first-team selection in 2011, as he was one of 15 student-athletes named to the top team. Additionally, Lamson, a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, was named to the second team for the second straight season in 2011.

Player Development

Responsible for restoring the glory and tradition to the storied WVU rifle program, Hammond has recruited not only elite athletes to compete in the Old Gold and Blue, but he also has continued to teach and foster his team’s talents so each student-athlete is a stronger competitor upon graduation. Athletic accolades and recognitions go hand-in-hand with such advancements. The Mountaineers have earned a combined 69 NRA All-America honors, including 29 first-team recognitions, since Hammond became head coach. The 2014 National Champion team earned 14 total All-America honors, a program high under Hammond. Seven student-athletes scored at least one honor, with Spurgeon earning three first team awards. Following a four-year drought, five Mountaineers scored five All-America honors in 2008, including first-team recognition for Lafe Kunkel and Brandi Eskew. Seven Mountaineers earned a collective 22 All-America honors in two seasons, as the 2009 NCAA champion squad collected 10 awards, while the 2010 team earned 12. Six Mountaineers earned eight total All-America honors in 2011 and 2012, including first-team honors for Campriani in 2011 and Zublasing in 2012. Eight Mountaineers scored an honor in 2013, a decade-high mark for WVU. Hammond’s leadership also propels the Mountaineers toward fruitful futures. Four Mountaineers competed at the 2014 ISSF World Championships, including a USA Junior Team invite for Spurgeon. Campriani and Zublasing earned spots on the Italian National Team for the 2012 London Summer Olympics, and Campriani won Gold in the men’s 50m 3 positions and Silver in the men’s 10m air rifle. He also finished eighth in the men’s 50m rifle prone. Additionally, Bryant Wallizer was invited to train at the US Olympic Training Center immediately following his 2010 graduation.

Athletic Achievements

In addition to his busy coaching schedule, Hammond still competes for the Great Britain National Team. Hammond started shooting when he was nine years old. As a junior, Hammond won both domestic and international honors, highlighted by the 50m rifle prone World Junior Champion title in Barcelona in 1998. Hammond competed in his second straight Olympics in 2012, as he represented Great Britain at the London Summer Games. He competed in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions and the men’s 50m rifle prone, finishing 17th overall with a 593 total.

Hammond continues to shoot on the ISSF World Cup circuit on an annual basis and is currently ranked inside the top 25 in the ISSF World Rankings.

Prior to Coaching at WVU

Hammond earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Leeds while competing on its rifle team. Hammond then journeyed to West Virginia to spend the 2002-03 season competing for the WVU rifle team while working toward his master’s degree in sport management. Hammond returned to Morgantown in 2006 and began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant with the Mountaineers. In addition to his highly successful career as a shooter, Hammond also has volunteered his time to help others. While a member of the Leeds squad, he helped coach beginning shooters and assisted the team with organizational tasks. Hammond also helped initiate Blind Shooting in Scotland with his father. He worked closely with a group from the Grampian Society for the Blind to teach basic rifle techniques. He gave the shooters positional and mental advice and undertook the task of raising funds for all of the equipment, as well as organizing a venue to hold the club’s matches.

Coaching Staff

Following his successful second season as the Mountaineers’ coach, Hammond spent the 2008 summer as an athlete, competing at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. In 2010, he competed at the 50th ISSF World Championships, in Munich, Germany, and the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, where he became the most successful Scottish Athlete in a single Commonwealth Games, winning four medals – two Gold, one Silver and one Bronze.

You now have a nation-best 16 national titles, including back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014. Do you see WVU as the premier rifle program in the country, and how do you hope to see the program improve going forward? I don’t think that’s for me to answer. We strive to be the best that we can every year. There’s a tremendous history to the program. The results over long periods and in recent years have been really good. For me as a coach, every year is a new year, and I try to make the team the best it can be. I hope that as individuals and as a team that we are the best possible version of ourselves. The program is for other people to judge, but we are doing the right things to make ourselves an excellent program. We are making sure that people want to compete for a top program.

COACH HAMMONDQA & Thomas KYANKO and Jon HAMMOND

All but two shooters from the 2014 NCAA Championship team return to the roster this year. How do you think this will help your success from the start of the season? When you have that many counters and team members returning, it creates a lot of consistency. It means we have a team with a lot of experience. Right from the beginning, hopefully we can take off where we left off. I think it creates a good transition in that there isn’t much of one. It will be very smooth. It really helps to be able to work on more specific things to make the team even better than last year.

32

What do you think the five seniors, each an All-American, can teach the underclassmen this year? They have a lot of experience between them, both internationally and collegiate. They’re older, they’re more mature and they will be better at balancing their classes, time table and college life. I think that they can help the team to manage their college lives better. They provide a mature base for the whole team. When you have that many seniors, as a coach, you hope for them to provide a second team of coaches for the underclassmen. If they do it right, and they have good leadership, they can provide a good platform for the rest of the team.

The team was able to visit the White House and meet President Barack Obama in 2014 as a part of NCAA Champions Day. What do you think that moment meant for the studentathletes, and what did it mean to you? It meant a lot to me. It was a great recognition of what the program’s done. I think it meant a lot to me because we didn’t get invited in 2009 when we also won the NCAA Championship. I know that a lot of teams get to visit the White House when they’ve won NCAA Championships. It doesn’t happen every year, and unfortunately 2009 was one of those years. It was great for the team and the entire University to be represented at the White House with all the other teams that were National Champions. As far as the team, they definitely appreciated it. It meant a lot for them to go to the nation’s capital and be honored. It could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but hopefully we will get to go back this year from our championship in 2014. It was an amazing experience and something that even our international team members appreciated as well.

The 2014-15 schedule includes seven teams who were ranked in the top 10 at the end of last year. How do you see your strength of schedule helping the team progress throughout the season? We want to shoot against the best teams. We want to challenge ourselves. There’s no point in shooting against teams that aren’t the top teams. We want to shoot against as many good teams as we can. A lot of that comes from how strong our conference is. A lot of the best teams, we have to compete against because they’re part of the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC). It’s great that the conference has continued to be that strong and provides that much competition. To compete at an NCAA Championship, you have to compete against the teams that will be there week in and week out. You have to prepare for the opposition throughout the season. We aim to push and challenge the team, and our schedule this season puts us in the position to do that and possibly win another championship.

The team shot an NCAA-record 4705 aggregate score during the championships and 2382 record air rifle score in their match against Kentucky. Is it always about breaking records, and do you emphasize that to the team? It’s something that you have to just let happen. We really push for the team to shoot its best and continually improve as individuals. From that, the team’s scores continue to improve. It’s really nice to break records and set the bar high, but that doesn’t happen without a lot of hard work. It’s easy to sit back and look at our great scores and great team, but we know that all the other teams are trying to improve, too. We don’t talk about those scores a lot. I’m sure the team thinks about it sometimes, but it’s not that important. It’s a nice reward, but we’re more focused on working hard and doing better. With that, records can be broken.

Your team had yet another successful year academically with six members making the CRCA All-Academic Team and Thomas Kyanko earninga Capital One Academic All-American honors. Do you emphasize that, and are you proud of that aspect of your team? I’m really proud of the academic achievements that the team has earned. I think that academics and a sport like rifle go hand-in-hand. I push for them to do well in the classroom. It’s a huge credit to the students that they’re able to manage their time and have equal success in the range and academically. They work just as hard as any other athlete, and they manage to succeed in the classroom and the range. We push them and encourage them, but it couldn’t be done without our academic services.

2014-15 Season Preview

2014-15 WVU RIFLE TEAM

Back-to-Back-to-Back The West Virginia University rifle team looks to defend its back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2014-15. With their title win in 2014, the Mountaineers became the first team to win consecutive NCAA titles since Alaska-Fairbanks won three straight from 2006-09. WVU last won back-to-back championships with four straight victories from 1995-98. Prior to that period, the program won six straight titles from 1988-93. The WVU rifle team owns a program-best 16 NCAA titles. The Mountaineers are the only WVU team to win a NCAA National Championship.

No Stopping Us Now The Mountaineers enter the 2014-15 season as the five-time defending Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) champions. WVU has won eight GARC titles since 1998, the most of any program. WVU also scored the conference regular-season title last year, its first since 2010. The Mountaineers snapped Kentucky’s streak of three straight titles.

All-America Talent Seven All-Americans return for the Mountaineers this season, including 2014 three-time first team honoree Garrett Spurgeon. The junior, a native of Canton, Missouri, earned National Rifle Association (NRA) All-America First Team Smallbore and Air Rifle awards, as well as a College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) All-America First Team honor. Spurgeon now shows five career All-America honors.

In total, five first-team All-Americans return for WVU this season: seniors Taylor Ciotola, Ziva Dvorsak, Meelis Kiisk and Maren Prediger, and Spurgeon.

Experience Will Lead this Year The Mountaineers’ roster boasts five seniors this year: Ciotola, Dvorsak, Kiisk, Prediger and Thomas Kyanko. All but Kiisk have experience shooting in a final at an NCAA Championships, with three shooting at the 2014 NCAA Championships. Prediger finished second in air rifle, followed by Dvorsak in third. In smallbore, Kyanko placed sixth, and Dvorsak finished seventh. In addition to the seniors, Spurgeon also adds key experience to the Mountaineers’ roster this season. The junior finished second in smallbore and fifth in air rifle at last year’s national championships.

Fresh Faces The Mountaineers welcome two to the squad this season. Junior Michael Bamsey joins WVU from the University of South Wales. A native of Cardiff, Wales, he is a member of the Great Britain and Wales National Teams. He recently shot at the 2014 ISSF World Championships and has shot at six ISSF World Cups since 2012. Elizabeth Gratz is the lone freshman on this year’s squad. A native of Sigel, Illinois, she is an eight-time state rifle champion. She has competed at several ISSF World Cups and finished fourth at the 2013 Junior Olympics. Additionally, she won the Gold medal in air rifle at the 23rd meeting of the Shooting Hopes in the Czech Republic.

World Championship Experience Four members of the WVU rifle team competed at the 51st International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championships in September, in Granada, Spain. Held every four years and in between Olympic Games, the World Championships is the first competition in which shooters have the opportunity to earn Olympic quota places, a starting postion to send athletes to the next Olympics. Spurgeon competed for the United States in the junior division and finished 11th in the junior men’s 50m rifle 3 positions with a score of 1161 (392 kneeling, 394 prone, 375 standing). He also finished 32nd in the junior men’s 50m rifle prone and 46th in the junior men’s 10m air rifle. Dvorsak shot for Slovenia and finished 11th in the women’s 10m air rifle and 39th in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions. Kiisk, representing Estonia, had high finishes of 25th in the men’s 300m rifle 3 positions and 26th in the men’s 50 rifle prone. Additionally, Bamsey shot for Great Britain.

Challenging Slate The Mountaineers will face six of the nation’s topeight teams in 2014-15, including two shoulder-toshoulder matches at Alaska-Fairbanks, the 2014 NCAA Championships runner-up. WVU opens its season on Oct. 12 against TCU at the WVU Rifle Range. The first of five home matches, the contest features two NCAA champion teams, as the Horned Frogs won the national title in 2010 and 2012 and finished sixth at last year’s championships.

2013-14 Season Review

The Mountaineers swept the team titles at the 2014 NCAA Championships.

Simply the Best At the end of the 2013-14 season, the Mountaineers claimed their second straight, nation-best 16th national title at the NCAA Championships, March 14-15, on Murray State’s campus. The team’s aggregate score of 4705 was the highest in championship history; the previous record was 4700, set by Kentucky in 2011. The team won its first NCAA smallbore title under coach Jon Hammond with a score of 2338, giving the Mountaineers a 17-shot advantage entering the air rifle competition. They won their second straight air rifle title with a 2367 score to secure the championship. WVU rifle’s title is the third for the team since 2009 and the third career title for coach Hammond. The Mountaineers are the only team in school history to win an NCAA Championship.

NCAA Representation During the 2014 NCAA Championships, three Mountaineers represented WVU in each of the discipline finals, the most of any squad participating. WVU had four top-five finishes at the championships. Maren Prediger finished second in air rifle, scoring 205.0 in the final. She entered the final with a championships-best score of 596. Garrett Spurgeon finished second in smallbore with a final mark of 451.6 and fifth in air rifle with a 143.5 final score.

52

Ziva Dvorsak finished third in air rifle with a 185.1 score. Entering the smallbore final with a championships-best mark of 588, she finished seventh with a 401.0 score. Thomas Kyanko finished sixth in smallbore with a 412.6 mark.

Record-Setting Fashion While a back-to-back NCAA Championship title is enough for the 201314 season to be remembered, this Mountaineer squad etched its name throughout the record book. Ziva Dvorsak, Meelis Kiisk, Thomas Kyanko, Maren Prediger and Garrett Spurgeon combined for a NCAA-record 4705 aggregate score at the NCAA National Championships. The five also shot a school and NCAA air rifle record mark of 2382 against Kentucky on Feb. 8, securing the regular-season GARC title.

Coach of the Year Coach Hammond was named the Rifle Winter 2014 CaptainU Coach of the Year, reflecting the team’s overall success during the 2013-14 season. Hammond led the Mountaineers to their second straight and nation-best 16th NCAA title, the team’s third since 2009.

WVU went undefeated for the first time since 2010, boasting a 10-0 record at the end of the season. In addition to the NCAA title, WVU won its fifth straight GARC title and also claimed the conference’s regular-season title with an undefeated 7-0 GARC record. Hammond previously won two College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Coach of the Year awards in 2009 and 2013, as well as GARC Coach of the Year honors in 2008 and 2010 and the NRA Distinguished College Coach award in 2008 and 2012.

Mountaineers Honored After winning the program’s nation-best 16th NCAA Championships title, seven Mountaineers earned a combined 14 National Rifle Association (NRA) and College Rifle Coaches’ Association (CRCA) All-America honors. Garrett Spurgeon led the way for the Mountaineers, as he was named to the NRA Air Rifle and Smallbore First Teams. He also was named to the CRCA All-America First Team, earning his fifth career honor and fourth first-team award. Ziva Dvorsak and Maren Prediger also earned NRA Air Rifle First Team honors, the first of Dvorsak’s career and second straight for Prediger, who also was named to the CRCA All-America First Team. Daniel Sojka, Meelis Kiisk, Thomas Kyanko and Patrick Sunderman were named to the NRA Smallbore Second Team. Kiisk also was named to the NRA Air Rifle Second Team, while Sunderman landed on the Honorable Mention Team. The two also were named to the CRCA All-America Third Team and Honorable Mention teams, respectively.

Conference Supremacy The Mountaineers continued to dominate the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) last season, winning their fifth straight GARC Championship title with a two-day total of 4700, at Mississippi’s Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center, March 1-2, in Oxford, Mississippi. The team led the conference in smallbore, winning the title with a 2337 score. They clenched the championship with a second place, 2363 air rifle showing on the final day of competition.

Maren Prediger won her first GARC air rifle title, scoring 593 in the open relay and 206.7 in the individual final. Dvorsak paced the Mountaineers in the open relay, shooting a career-high 598. She also had a championship high, two-day total of 1180. Garrett Spurgeon led the Mountaineers with a 587 smallbore score in the open relay, and placed fifth overall with a 419.8 final score. Jean-Pierre Lucas tied with Spurgeon in the open relay, and placed third overall with a 441.0 final score. Thomas Kyanko finished fourth in the smallbore final with a 431.0 score, while Meelis Kiisk and Ziva Dvorsak finished sixth and seventh in the discipline with 406.3 and 397.2 final scores, respectively. WVU owns a conference-record eight championship titles, including the last five straight, also a record. The Mountaineers also won their seventh regular-season GARC title, which Kentucky had claimed the prior three years.

On-Target in the Classroom, Too Thomas Kyanko was named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Second Team. It was the second consecutive award for Kyanko. Four student-athletes have earned seven Academic All-America honors since 2010. WVU also placed six students on the 2014 College Rifle Coaches’ Association (CRCA) All-Academic Team: Chance Cover, Meelis Kiisk, Thomas Kyanko, Jean-Pierre Lucas, Maren Prediger and Daniel Sojka.

NCAA Champions Day For the first time in WVU history, a Mountaineer athletic team visited the White House for NCAA Champions Day. The team traveled to Washington, D.C., toured the Capitol and met with President Barack Obama. The President congratulated them on their then-most-recent 2013 national title. Three-time NCAA champion and Mountaineer alum Petra Zublasing made a special trip from Europe to visit the White House with her former teammates. At the 2013 Championships, Zublasing became the first shooter to sweep the NCAA individual titles since 2001, winning air rifle and smallbore and pushing her career NCAA title haul to three.

E. Gordon Gee

President

Dr. E. Gordon Gee is one of America’s most prominent higher education leaders, having helmed universities for more than three decades. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the top 10 university presidents in the United States. In 2014, Gee returned to West Virginia University, where his career as a university president began. His leadership goals include putting students first, advancing the university’s research agenda, partnering with West Virginia communities and making sure that 1.8 million West Virginians know in their hearts and minds that West Virginia University is their university. Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his J.D. and Ed.D degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and was granted full professorship in 1978. One year later, he became dean of the West Virginia University College of Law, and, in 1981, was named West Virginia University president. He served in that role until 1985. He went on to lead the University of Colorado (1985-1990), Brown University (1998-2000), and Vanderbilt University (2001-2007). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990 to 1997 and again from 2007 to 2013. Gee has been a member of several education-governance organizations and committees, including the Big Ten Conference Council of Presidents, the Inter-University Council of Ohio, the Business-Higher Education Forum, and the American Association of Universities. He was chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, Gee was invited to join the International Advisory Board of King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia. Active in a number of national professional and service organizations during his tenures, he has served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Inc., Limited

As Director of Athletics at West Virginia University, Oliver Luck has worked endlessly and traveled the world to enhance the Mountaineers’ role as a major player in collegiate athletics. In four years on the job, Luck’s accomplishments have been nothing short of spectacular. In the past year alone, he successfully guided the start of construction on a new $21 million baseball park, which will open in 2015 and provide the Mountaineers with one of the best facilities in the Big 12. Add in his tireless efforts to secure a $75 million bond, start a $25 million fundraising effort and proceed with a $6 million new football team room and Luck’s efforts will show $106 million in facility improvements in the coming years to bring WVU’s aging facilities into the modern times. His work on the national level is equally impressive and equally valuable to West Virginia University. He was named in 2013 to a three-year term on the inaugural College Football Playoff committee, which will change the face of the college football national championship. He serves on the NFL Player Safety Advisory Committee, chairs the Big 12 Budget and Finance Committee, serves on the board of American Campus Community, Inc., and in May, 2014, was one of the featured speakers at the White House at the Healthy Kids and Safe Sports Concussion Summit through his work with the organization Practice Like Pros. Among athletic directors, Luck is also one of the most popular speakers on the national circuit. Countless seminars and conventions feature him on panels and discussion groups to tap into his knowledge of the corporate and collegiate world.

Luck, was appointed the University’s 11th Director of Athletics on June 9, 2010 and he was no stranger to success. In fact, Luck’s athletic and professional career has been the epitome of success, first as a record-setting quarterback for the Mountaineers from 1978-81, then as a professional quarterback for the National Football League’s Houston Oilers, and later as a professional sports executive. After retiring from football, Luck became vice president of business development for the NFL and later was appointed general manager of the Frankfurt Galaxy of the newly created World League of American Football. He spent the ’95 season as general manager of the Rhein Fire before being named President and CEO of NFL Europe in 1996. Luck totaled more than 10 years with the NFL, before becoming chief executive officer of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority in 2001. In that role, Luck oversaw the development and management of a $1 billion professional sports and entertainment complex for the city of Houston that included Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, Reliant Stadium, home of the Houston Texans, the Toyota Center, home of the Houston Rockets. In 2005, Luck was appointed as the first president of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamos, helping that organization to a pair of MLS Cup titles in his first two years at the helm. Luck secured the funding for an $80 million soccer complex to house the Dynamos when the call came to return to his alma mater. BBVA Compass Stadium was built and opened in 2012 adding to Luck’s legacy with the professional soccer team, and the overall Houston sports facility complexes. He returned to Houston in May, 2012 for the opening ceremony of the soccer stadium that he fought so hard for. Prior to his current position at WVU, Luck was appointed to a four-year term on the West Virginia University Board of Governors, a spot he relinquished to become director of athletics. The Rhodes Scholar finalist graduated Phi Beta Kappa from WVU in 1982. He also earned a law degree from Texas, graduating cum laude in 1987. In 1997, Luck was inducted into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2000, he was inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame. He is married to the former Kathy Wilson. They have two sons and two daughters: Andrew, a former All-American quarterback and two-time Heisman Trophy finalist at Stanford and No. 1 overall pick of the 2012 NFL draft by the Indianapolis Colts; Mary Ellen, a standout volleyball player and graduate of Stanford; Emily, a current student at Stanford and Addison, who attends Morgantown High.

Oliver Luck

In 2013, Luck oversaw the reseating of the WVU Coliseum to further increase WVU’s fundraising efforts. He added an 18th varsity sport - men’s golf, which will tee it up in 2015 for the first time since 1982. He outsourced WVU’s media rights to secure a 12-year guaranteed annual revenue source of at least $6 million per year from IMG. However, through all his accomplishments in four years in Morgantown, it all has occurred while he has fostered an atmosphere for achievement and triumph in the classroom and on the field.

Oliver Luck

Director ofAthletics

Before 2014, his previous three years at WVU were equally impressive and busy. He has hired new coaches to bolster WVU’s level of success. He guided the completion of major capital projects such as the $25 million WVU basketball practice facility for men’s and women’s basketball and the women’s soccer training complex. He led WVU into the Big 12 Conference, presided over the best fundraising year in school history (2012), implemented several safety and crowd enhancements at Mountaineer sporting events, increased overall department revenue, continued a master plan for facility upgrades and watched his football program gain its third BCS bowl victory.
