Recap

Gary Browne’s circus 3-point basket with 1.6 seconds left sent the game into overtime, and then West Virginia was able to withstand a point-blank miss at the buzzer to hang on for a 70-68 overtime victory over Missouri State at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The victory was number 700 for West Virginia coach Bob Huggins. The Mountaineers trailed by as much as 10 points with 8:34 remaining in the game. Things looked bad for WVU when Nathan Scheer intercepted Darryl Bryant’s pass at the top of the key and went in for a layup with 1:03 remaining to put Missouri State up five, 63-58. Browne got two of those back on a difficult jumper and then after a Weems miss along the baseline, Browne hit the 3 beyond the top of the key ahead of the buzzer. In overtime, Kevin Noreen, playing in place of starter Deniz Kilicli, who was out with a hip pointer, made two big free throws to begin the extra session and later pulled down a huge rebound off a Bryant miss with 29 seconds left and West Virginia leading 69-68. Noreen got the basketball to Bryant and he was fouled with 22.8 seconds left. Bryant was only able to make one of two, giving Missouri State an opportunity to send the game into a second overtime with a 2-point basket or win it with a 3. Missouri State got the ball to Scheer beyond the top of the key. Scheer faked like he was going to take a 3, drawing WVU’s Aaron Brown into the air, and then took off toward the basket where he had an uncontested layup to tie the game, but he missed and Missouri State also missed the tip-in as time expired. Kevin Jones led West Virginia with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Bryant contributed 14 and the freshmen Brown and Browne added 14 and 13, respectively.

Recap

Pierre Jackson scored 23 points and Brady Heslip added 19 to lead sixth-ranked Baylor to an 83-81 overtime victory in the championship game of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic in the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. West Virginia had a great opportunity to knock off the undefeated Bears, leading 76-73 with 33.2 seconds left and freshman Jabarie Hinds at the free throw line to try and make it a two possession game. However, Hinds missed the free throw and Dominique Rutledge retrieved the miss and converted the put-back, but he was called for an offensive foul to wave off the basket. On the other end, Jackson lost freshman Gary Browne for a 3 at the top of the key to tie the game with 15.4 seconds left. Both teams had a chance to win the game in regulation, West Virginia when Truck Bryant’s jumper came up short, and Baylor, following a timeout with 2.2 seconds left when it got a full-court pass to Quincy Acy in the lane, but his turnaround shot clanged off the back of the rim ahead of the buzzer. Hinds made it a two-point game with 1:38 remaining in overtime with a 3, and later, Hinds had a chance to either tie or win the game after he blocked a jumper and Gary Browne rebounded the ball with 13 seconds left. Browne got the ball back to Hinds, who drove it up the floor for a good look at the basket, but he left his floating jumper short as the horn sounded. The loss spoiled a great individual effort by Kevin Jones, who scored 28 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in her personal matchup against Baylor’s Perry Jones III, who scored four points on 2 of 9 shooting at the other end. Baylor led 40-33 at halftime.

Notebook
