GREAT THINGS ARE BUILT ONE DAY AT A TIME No matter what you plan for your future, you’re going to have to tackle things one day at a time. A day in the classroom. A day in the lab. A day in the field. Our students know this, so they make each day count — and they keep making them count long after graduation day.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF RAT RACE Psychology majors have access to southern West Virginia’s only full animal behavior laboratory and live rodent colony, where they can make detailed observations on animal behavior and learn behavior modification principles.
JENNIFER HUDNALL, ’11 Jennifer Hudnall is building her career around helping pet owners modify problem behavior. A graduate of our psychology program, Jennifer is currently finishing her master’s degree in applied behavioral science to fulfill her dream of becoming a certified applied animal behaviorist.
“I’d spent years looking for a passion — something that changed the world for me. Getting to work with pets in this way fulfills that lifelong desire to help them. If you look at psychology as the study of behavior, understanding it can really change your life, even if you don’t pursue it as a profession.”

ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES Students take part in all kinds of fascinating internships and co-ops to learn new skills and boost their resumes, including work with organizations like Dow Chemical, Toyota and the West Virginia Power minor league baseball team.
TAVON JOHNSON, ’16 WVU Tech mechanical engineering major Tavon Johnson has big plans. With just a year to go, he’s making the best of his college career, showcasing his research at the state’s capitol, launching student design expositions and working as an intern at a cybersecurity firm.
“My goal as a mechanical engineer is to help. Whether that’s helping to advance the military with counterterrorism, the economy with more efficient construction equipment and materials, or maybe helping the world with renewable energy. Wherever my career leads me, I want to know that my work will go to meaningful advancements.”
RESEARCH IS FOR UNDERGRADS, TOO Our small school environment means that students can enter into research opportunities typically reserved for graduate students. This year, we’re building a massive superconductor track and upgrading bio-diesel to make cleaner fuel. Next year? That’s up to you.
AMY HADDIX, ’15
LINDSAY MCDOWALL, ’15
Amy Haddix, like so many WVU Tech students, had a job lined up before she even started her senior year. Now a production engineer for the Dow Chemical Company, Amy works to ensure that chemical products are manufactured efficiently and in the safest way possible.
At WVU Tech, Lindsay McDowall landed a once-in-a-lifetime internship at NASA and used what she learned to help research new ways to make fuel from biomass. After graduation, she landed a job as a process engineer at a company that makes activated carbon products.
“I want to break the glass ceiling and show younger females that it’s possible to run a company. I have a 14-year-old sister at home and I don’t ever want her to think ‘Well I’m a female so this is as high up as I can go.’ I want her to see what I have accomplished and say, ‘Look what she did, I’m going to go there, too.’”
“Being able to do research helps you gain experience using the machinery you’ll be expected to use when you graduate. I stand out on a resume because I know what a gas chromatography-mass spectrometer is and how to use it. At a much bigger university, I likely wouldn’t have done this type of research as an undergraduate.”

A DAY IN THE LIFE
JUST LIKE THE REAL THING Our nursing students work in our collaborative Nursing Training Center, where they practice their skills in a true hospital environment using state-of-the art medical equipment.
MARY CUNNINGHAM, ’15 Mary Cunningham can’t help but care for others, and she’s using the nursing education she received at WVU Tech to do just that. Mary is working in a cardiac catheterization lab in the state’s largest hospital center, where she prepares patients for heart procedures and provides emotional support to patients and their families.
“Being compassionate and caring is just as important as the physical care that a nurse provides. A passion of mine is caring for someone as a human being and hopefully making an impact that counts, either on the patient and family or me, that allows me to grow to become a better nurse.”

You’ll know what we mean when you find yourself tossing a Frisbee with friends one evening under the bright lights of Martin field, attending our old-fashioned Homecoming parade, playing video games all night long at a LAN party or standing in the Bears Den as half the student body sings happy birthday in your honor.
ANGEL THOMPSON, ’15 Angel Thompson is a WVU Tech grad, but that doesn’t mean she’s done learning everything she can about chemistry. She’s earning her graduate degree so that she can revolutionize the cosmetics industry and launch her own line of natural makeup, fragrances, lotions and facial cleansers.
“Chemistry is everywhere. On a regular basis, food, health and beauty products and procedures are discussed and people are not aware that it ties directly to the science of chemistry. The greatest thing a chemist can do is sustain and improve the quality of life.”
SHOW YOUR WORK Our students aren’t just taking opportunities, they’re sharing them. They attend conferences to present papers and share their work at student-run expositions. They even showcase their research at Undergraduate Research Day at the state capitol, where they discuss their work with state lawmakers.
CASEY ORNDORFF, ’13 WVU Tech grad Casey Orndorff is earning his Ph.D. in computational analysis and modeling. Today, he’s using his passion for mathematics to aid in the fight against cancer as he predicts how hyperthermia treatments will impact the skin of a cancer patient.
“In a way, you can compare curing cancer to an open-ended math problem: we need to find a procedure that works, or a combination of procedures to attack each individual subpart of the problem. It’s a giant math problem in a sense, where the solution could save countless lives.”

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
WVU TECH IS YOURS. BUILD IT THE WAY YOU WANT. We give students the tools and support to build the kind of organizations they want. From leadership and professional groups to Greek life and the arts, WVU Tech students have created some amazing things.
E-SPORTS CLUB
AWESOME
Founded in the spring of 2015, the WVU Tech E-Sports club is already one of the most popular groups on campus. The club is designed to balance academics with competitive gaming, and the group has hosted on-campus gaming events and competed in a national gaming tournament.
The Association for Women Engineers, Scientists, or Mathematicians Empowerment is dedicated to supporting women in STEM fields. The group hears from industry professionals and works with K-12 students on outreach activities to introduce young minds to STEM.

TECH MEDIA CREW Our students created the Tech Media Crew to share campus news and to keep students, staff and faculty connected to the greater WVU Tech community. They’re constantly producing YouTube videos, covering campus events and sharing entertaining content on social media.
ASCE Students in WVU Tech’s American Society of Civil Engineers chapter are known for building and racing concrete canoes, constructing steel bridges and showcasing their research in technical papers. They’re a clever group of engineers and they show it each year in regional competitions.
AWESOME gives female STEM students a chance to grow their network and learn from industry leaders.
SAE Each year, members of the WVU Tech Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) build a Baja-style racing buggy from the ground up. These machines are designed, constructed and raced entirely by students. In 2015, our SAE Baja team put their buggy to the test at competitions in Alabama and Maryland.

LIVE IN A WORLD BUILT JUST FOR YOU Our students live in a campus community built with them in mind. Our traditional-meets-modern residence halls, popular dining facilities and campus activities mean students never run short on things to do or places to be. And with free student support programs, our students can brush up on everything from the theory of relativity to the theory of resume writing.

Our residence halls offer a total residential living and learning experience, and we’re excited to extend that experience to our new halls on the Beckley campus. Staffed 24/7 by live-in residential assistants, each of our affordable and comfortable residence halls offer cable and Wi-Fi access, game rooms, study lounges and free laundry facilities.
Our students are artists, musicians, poets, athletes, outdoor enthusiasts and film buffs, and our Division of Student Life ensures they have an outlet for all of that. We book regular musical, theatre and comedy performances on campus. We show movies right out of the theaters, host talent shows and plan outdoor skiing and whitewater rafting trips.
SUCCESS CENTER The Student Success Center was established in 2013 to help every student on their path to a degree. The SSC is a hub of learning and sees more than 10,000 visits each academic year. Why? Because they offer academic advising to first-year students, free tutoring and skill-building workshops for all students and a place for those who want to study or work together on projects.

DINING No matter where you are on campus or what you’re hungry for, our dining facilities have you covered. The Bears Den serves delicious meals, features a full salad bar and offers handcrafted, made-to-order wraps and paninis. The Tech Spot café serves up coffee, handmade salads and sandwiches to go. And you can always grab a snack from the Student Success Center during those late-night study sessions.

WELLNESS
We host one of TRiO’s oldest federally funded Student Support Services programs in the country. Designed for Pell-eligible, first-generation students and students with disabilities, the program offers free tutoring, advising services, cultural events, employment opportunities and scholarships for those who qualify.
Our campus community takes care of its own. All of our students have access to a wide range of health and wellness programs and services. From free counseling and a wellness clinic to campus wide awareness campaigns and initiatives, we’re here to help you graduate happy and healthy.

WE’RE FAST. WE’RE STRONG. AND WE PUT THE STUDENT IN STUDENT-ATHLETE. This is where we show our strength of mind and body. Our student-athletes posted the most overall single-season wins in WVU Tech history during the 2014-2015 athletic season — and they did it while making the grade. The average GPA for all student-athletes during the season was nearly 3.0, and WVU Tech boasted six NAIA Scholar Teams and 16 USCAA All-American, 20 USCAA All-Academic and three NAIA AllAmerican players.

West Virginia became a state in 1863, but our history goes back much further than that. Spend your free time exploring civil war sites, historical towns, antique railroads and exhibition coal mines. Visit the Glade Creek Grist Mill in Babcock State Park or take in spectacular views of the iconic New River Gorge Bridge — one of the highest vehicle bridges in the world. You can also tour the region’s unique museums, which chronicle everything from the state’s craft culture to famous writers who called West Virginia home.

Southern West Virginia cuisine is something you have to experience to believe. You’ll have to try the area’s specialties — locally sourced produce, fresh-caught trout, hand-tossed pizza, smoky homemade salsa, pork barbeque, sweet peppered bacon and wild West Virginia ramps.
