John F. Hardesty, MD (1887-1953), was a St. Louis ophthalmologist. His daughter, Jane Hardesty Poole, a 1961 graduate of Washington University, established the John F. Hardesty, MD, Distinguished Professorship in Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences in his honor. “My father gave so much of himself to help families desperate to give their blind children sight,” Poole says. “I am so pleased that I can honor him in this way.” Dr. Tychsen’s dedication to children with severe visual impairments makes him an excellent selection for this professorship to honor the legacy of Dr. Hardesty. He uses noninvasive electronic techniques to measure patients’ eyesight before, during and after surgery. A computer allows precise measurement of visual acuity and eye tracking, which can help determine whether a child has a problem with sensory input or motor output. Dr. Tychsen presented the lecture “Repairing Vision in Brain Damaged Children” on Thursday, May 31, 2012.

Resident and Fellow Awards Ceremony and Reception 2012

translation: “to your success” / congratulations Dr. Mitch Wolf retired after 43 years of distinguished service to the department and the community. Faculty and friends celebrated the occasion on June 14. During his tenue, Dr. Wolf focused on Age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, cataracts, and electrophysiology of the eye. photos by Cheryl Smith, COA “Dr. Wolf was the first person here to specialize in inherited retinal disease and electrophysiology. He is a superb clinician and a wonderful teacher. For many years he ran our service at Jewish Hospital in exemplary fashion.” stated Dr. Michael Kass during his remarks at the celebration.

Dr. Wolf poses with former technician Lyvonne Shanklin, COT.

Dr. Wolf was a great doctor and friend. I was impressed by his ability to treat me as an colleague even as a resident in training. He was always available to assist and helped to mold me into the ophthalmologist I am today. I wish him well. – Mike Connors, MD, PhD

No party is complete without a cake . . . and party favors, made by the office staff. Charla Meyer, COT is hiding behind a mask of a younger Dr. Wolf.

“I will always be grateful to Dr. Wolf for his patience as he attended those first few cataract surgeries at the VA. Also for all of the help he offered as I was learning to read ERGs. He always had a great story to tell. Congratulations on your retirement and best wishes!” – Milam Brantley MD, PhD.

Arsham Sheybani, MD, Current Chief Resident recalls his first surgery with Dr. Wolf: “Collected, calm, and cool as cucumber, Dr. Wolf stepped into the operating room to staff my first phacoemul-sification surgery as a second year resident at the VA. Just writing that sentence made my heart rate rise. However he remained at a steady 60 beats per minute despite my inexperience. Dr. Wolf has been instilling confidence in novice surgeons for years. He has been one of this residency’s most underrated yet internally highest valued surgical teachers. His reassuring approach to teaching surgery will stay with his students for the rest of their careers. For this I thank him on behalf of all those he has mentored. We wish him well in retirement for he justly deserves some relaxation.”

A Fond Farewell Dear Colleagues, As you may have heard, I have decided to accept a position as Vice Chairman and Director of Ocular Oncology Service at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami and will resign from my faculty position at Washington University at the end of July 2012. I make this move with very mixed emotions because of my great fondness for the DOVS and Washington University. I have spent my entire professional career here, and would not have been as successful without the unique nurturing environment here. It will be very difficult to leave so many friends and colleagues. I am proud to have been a part of the DOVS, truly one of the great departments in the country. I have no doubt that the DOVS and Washington University will continue rising to new heights of achievement. Stay in touch and look me up if you are ever in South Florida! Bill Harbour
