FACULTY ENGAGEMENT The Faculty Associate/Fellows Program emerged in response to the realization that there was a growing gap between faculty members and undergraduate students at WashU. Faculty help improve the undergraduate experience of their students, while students increase the number of quality interactions with faculty outside of academics. I joined this program thinking primarily about what I could bring to the students. In retrospect, that seems silly. I have grown considerably as a result of this job: in my ability to work with groups of people, in my understanding of the university, in my attitudes concerning the undergraduate population, and I my approach to teaching and the value of education. Carl Craver, Park/Mudd Faculty Fellow (2011-2015

11

Faculty In-Residence

The Faculty Associates and Faculty Fellows program is rapidly becoming an invaluable staple in the Washington University student experience. By volunteering faculty members are bringing a new sense of accessibility to the often overwhelming world of academia. Students rapidly begin to view their professors as ‘real people. Residential College Director

Before living on campus, I knew students from the brain up. I knew in the classroom. After serving as a Faculty Fellow, I now know the hearts and souls of the students. It has changed the way I teach and advise.” Brian Carpenter, Professor of Psychology, FF (2010-2014, 2017-2019)

“While St. Louis is a smaller metropolitan city, it is one with so much spirit and a rich history! As someone who studied Urban Studies in college, I have particularly enjoyed getting to learn the history of race in this city and how that has impacted what the city looks like today. St. Louis is a place that is easy to engage civically if that is something you are looking to tap into.” —Jordan Cooper
