Amsterdam : Going Dutch! The term “Going Dutch” means “to pay one’s share” or “In Dutch Fashion”. There’s that F word again -- fashion! During the Renaissance period, the Netherlands was the wealthiest and most powerful country in the world. This allowed Dutch merchants to patronize artists, specifically painters. This abundance of wealth, allowed the Dutch to purchase paintings from artists to hang on their households. The wealthiest of the wealthiest commissioned works from the Dutch masters to satisfy their egos. This was the Golden Age with the likes of Rembrandt van Rijn, Vincent van Gogh, and Johannes Vermeer leading the Dutch masters. Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and it is definitely a must-see destination in the European continent. The best way to experience the city is by walking and/or biking. If New Zealand has an abundance of sheep, Amsterdam has an abundance of bikes. In the US, we have parking garages for cars and in Amsterdam they have parking garages for bikes. Most tourists head for the famous Red Light District but Amsterdam is more than its Red Light District. For foodies, there are so many different kinds of exotic food like Indonesian, Thai, Surinamese, Indian, Chinese, French, Italian, Middle Eastern, North African, Syrian, and Lebanese to name just a few. The canals are a must-see and you can either go for the one hour one hundred attraction tour or the hop on hop off boats.

If art is your cup of tea, head over to the Rijksmuseum which houses a collection of art from the Dutch Masters, Rembrandt, Vermeer, and a host of others. A whole museum is dedicated to Vincent van Gogh as well. Live music is also quite an attraction just outside the Rijksmuseum. And if you want to see a glimpse of the countryside, a visit to the Windmill Village in Zaans Schans, Zaandam with authentic windmills just an hour away from the city via bus, is an attraction you won’t want to miss. While you’re there, shop for a wide variety of cheese, honey, and stroopwaffel to take home with you. And then hop on a bus over to Volendam where you can check out the Edam cheese factory. If you’re a beer lover, a tour of the Heineken beer factory near the museums would be a fitting cap to an event-filled afternoon. But whatever you do, there is one thing that you must not do while in Amsterdam. Taking pictures of the ladies of the night at the Red Light District is strictly frowned upon and if you do get caught it will become quite confrontational. You can look and oggle all you like but you can’t ignore the obvious posted signs of no photographing or video taping. Finally, it’s September and Fall is in the air. The leaves in Amsterdam will be turning golden and it’s about time to go Dutch!
