Dear Mandy, I’m self-conscious of my body. Q:

Dear Mandy, I’ve been having trouble using condoms lately, at first this old one from my wallet ripped so next time I stirred the honey pot I used 3 condoms, they ripped too. I’m thinking about using a full box next time. Do you think this will fix the problem or should I try a different size?

A:

Dear Ripping Condom, There’s a science to condoms and not everybody knows about it. First off, the condom shouldn’t be too small. If it’s too small—rrrrrrrppppttt— it’s gonna rip. Second, there needs to be the proper amount of lubrication present or else it might wear from improper friction. Third, some brands do rip more often than others. (The horror!) For safety’s sake, stick with the name brands that are the proper size for you. Love, Mandy

Q:

Dear Mandy, My girlfriend is afraid of saying the word “penis” she usually switches it out for something else. Some examples of what she has used are: little Richard, Shlong Johnson, the oneeyed snake, the German sausage and the skin flute. How do I convince her to say penis and stop all this tomfoolery?

A:

Dear German Sausage, She’s obviously uncomfortable using the Penis word and that’s okay. It’s totally normal. (Even Jess from New Girl has this problem!) To be honest though, how often does this really come up in conversation? I personally think it’s funnier when someone uses a clever name for the male wiener. The best ones I’ve heard so far are womb raider and whoopie stick. I would just let it go and enjoy her creative nicknames for what they are: Brilliant! Love, Mandy

Dear Squeamish Seamus, If you’re allergic to something, you’re allergic to something. Now, I hope there wouldn’t be a lot of blood involved in your sweet, sweet love-making, so that can be avoided. Latex, on the other hand, can only be avoided by an alternate form of birth control, such as the pill, etc. Faux leather— now there’s your problem. Sounds like she needs to stop being so cheap and get some real leather—amiright?

Q:

Dearest Mandy, I am a freshman, but I have the hots for this 28 year old who wants to hang out. She seems sweet and charming, but is she too old for me? Isn’t the guy supposed to be older or is that too stereotypical? Signed, JB

3

A:

Dear JB, You can date anyone you want, so forget about the age. (Unless you’re under 18, then you absolutely need to keep age in mind. Make wise decisions, kids.) There is an interesting way to know if the person you’re dating is ‘technically’ too young for you. If you’re a 20 year old, subtract half your age and then add seven. The minimum age you can date in that situation is someone who is 17 years old. For your girlfriend, after doing the math, the youngest she can date is someone who is 21 years old. If you don’t make the cut, too bad. While this rule is a good one to follow, remember that age is just a number and love is love. Make sure she knows if you’re underage before you get romantically involved, JB! If not, all is fair game. Love, Mandy

OPINION: Is sex on the first date a do or a don’t? Chase Coe Contributing Writer Coe.14@wright.edu

S

ex on the first date is a widely debated topic in today’s society. There is the double standard that if women sleep with a lot of partners they are “easy,” but if men do it, they’re studs. The decision is, of course, up to the two consenting parties involved, but I

never have and never will, believe that sex on the first date is a bad thing. Many women believe that the true act of loyalty is when they make their significant other wait for sex. If they are willing to wait, they are a perfect mate. However, this is not always true. Some people will find sex elsewhere. Plus, it will never be your decision for how long someone facebook.com/theguardianonline

loves you. Sex is a natural part of life. Maybe waiting will make it more special, but sometimes having high expectations can be detrimental. Sex on the first date will never make anyone “easy.” I have always been a firm believer that the word “slut” was a made up word just so women could not have as much fun as men. Like I said earlier, sex is completely @wsuguardian

natural and not waiting or waiting will never lessen anyone’s worth and if you are with someone who believes that it will, kick them to the curb! That kind of negativity is harmful. I am also of the belief that sex, while not the most important, is a pretty big part of relationships. Almost like purchasing a new car. And what do people do with new cars? They test drive www.theguardianonline.com

them. Sex on the first date is like test driving a new car. People have to be sure that they want that car and that it is good to them. No one wants to regret buying a car and no one wants to regret a relationship. Sex on the first date will never be a bad thing and never let anyone convince you otherwise. April 8, 2015

Love bites: How to remove that obvious hickey Olivia Rutherford News Writer Rutherford.24@wright.edu

T

rying to avoid getting, or giving, a hickey can be a pretty simple task, but it’s likely that you will run across the issue at some point. A hickey is a dark or reddish skin blemish left after having that area of skin sucked on for a period of time. In essence, a hickey is a bruise and should be treated as one. The blemish can often vary in intensity depending on the circumstances. Should you find yourself in this tough situation, there are a few tips to speed up the healing process: 1. Ice: When getting a bruise, it’s important to ice the area instead of heating it. The sooner you realize there is a hickey and start icing it, the better. Do this until any swelling goes

down. 2. Cold spoon: Take two metal spoons and wrap them in a wet paper towel. Place them in the freezer for 20 minutes and use one on the affected area. As that one warms up, switch them out. This will help the hickey to decrease in color and its size. 3. Brush: Although this one might irritate the skin a bit, brushing over the affected area will increase the circulation of blood, which will cause the hickey to fade away. 4. Heat: If the above tips have been tried and it has been at least 24 hours, try using a heat pack on the affected area. It is important to wait 24 hours because it will otherwise worsen the hickey.

or being such an important part of life, sex has been misunderstood and misconstrued throughout time, creating many myths that have be a hinderance to sexual relationships and health. Here are just a few of the sex myths that people are believing and integrating into their sex lives. You can’t get pregnant on birth control Medicine has come a long way in developing contraceptives. Condoms, IUDs, hormonal contraception and even Plan B are five-star methods that are proven to significantly decrease chances of pregnancy; however, none of these birth control methods are 100 percent effective. The only guaranteed means of preventing pregnancy is through abstinence. Women don’t ejaculate. Ejaculation isn’t usually equated to female climax, but that’s not to say that it isn’t possible. In fact, many women have 4

April 8, 2015

reported that they’ve experienced some form of ejaculation during orgasm. Samuel Salama, a gynecologist from France, conducted a study on female ejaculation, and his studies have lead him to conclude that any female should be capable of ejaculation “if their partner knows what they’re doing.” I would know if I had an STI Sex educators tend to capitalize on the horror stories of the symptoms caused by STIs. Genital warts, itching, discharge, and sexual discomfort and pain are just a few signs that may indicate an STI. However, some infections have mild or no symptoms and can lie dormant in the body with no indication of a problem, making regular STI screenings and safe sex an essential part of healthy sexual relationships. Intercourse alone stimulates orgasm for women Interocurse can be pleasurable, but about 75 percent of women don’t experience orgasm through intercourse alone. Most women need some www.theguardianonline.com

form of foreplay and clitoral stimulation to get the job done. The bigger, the better The porn industry leads one to believe that bigger is better, depicting pleasure to come from larger than average penises. This philosophy couldn’t be more wrong. Size compatibility is a huge factor in determining sexual gratification. A large penis paired isn’t going to work. Skill goes much further than size. Women don’t like porn Untrue. Why else would “50 Shades of Grey” be so popular? Stereotypically, the porn industry has catered to men, but erotica and porn has started to shift its focus, catering to the fantasies of women. You can’t get pregnant during menstruation WRONG. While pregnancy during menstruation is uncommon, sperm can live in the body for several days. At their weakest mobility, live sperm can be found in the body at 7 days, giving it a chance to impregnate after the cycle is over.

tion if she wants to be spontaneously reminded. Other features include information to help women take steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer, educational tips about early detection, the option to schedule doctor appointments and more. Women can also send a “Man-O-Gram” to their friends, where they will receive a personalized message from one of the app’s fine fellas reminding them to stay on top of their breast health.

WSU senior communications major Jasmine Higgins shared her thoughts on the app. “I like that they are wanting women to be mindful of their health. As for the shirtless guys, I’m all for it. They use women in bikinis to sell hamburgers, so why not?” Higgins said. If you’re a lady with a smartphone and you want to be proactive about your health, you’re probably going to want to check this one out. Trust me.

It’s the guy’s turn: Contraceptives for men to keep pregnancy at bay Dylan Dohner News Editor Dohner.6@wright.edu

A

ccording to a Guttmacher Institute 2014 fact sheet, 62 million women in America are in their childbearing years (15-44), and about 70 percent of them (or 43 million) are at risk of unintended pregnancy. Those 43 million women are able to curb their chances of an accidental pregnancy via birth control pills, hormone-releasing arm implants, IUDs inserted into the uterus, spermicides, Plan B/ Morning After pills, vaginal rings and tubal sterilization among other methods. But what about males? Do men have contraceptive methods and instruments aside from condoms they can use too? Actually, they do. Aside from straight-up abstinence, males can partake in one of these either currently available or up-and-coming methods to emerge victorious with their partners on the baby battlefield. Vasalgel: This polymer gel blocks sperm by settling in the vas deferens, or the

“carrying-away vessel” for the little swimmers. The gel is ultra-targeted and specific, and leaves hormones completely alone. It is administered via one 10-minute procedure and, unlike a vasectomy, looks to be reversible. Currently the gel is being developed by a non-profit U.S. foundation and needs a little more funding before it can circulate in mainstream medicine. Clean Sheets Pills: These are quick-acting dry orgasm pills that also don’t affect hormones. They temporarily shut off the muscles that propel sperm and semen. As a quick-acting method, they can be a good compliment to Vasalgel as part of the “contraceptive supermarket.” The pills aren’t on the market yet, as researchers still need a couple hundred thousand dollars to help fund their research into identifying and eliminating side-effects. Ultrasounds: Wait, what? It’s not what you think. This ultrasound is done on the testes, takes 15 minutes and is completely painless. The

procedure burns and kills the sperm, and it’s done with machines that are already in most physical therapists offices. Procedures can provide up to six months of contraception and, if done one after another over a few days, can sterilize males completely. This is leading researchers to consider it more as a permanent contraceptive method than a “bounce-back” technique. Heat Methods: This is a free home treatment. Since the testes need to be slightly cooler than the body to produce sperm, heating them up will do the trick. Keep them at body temperature during the day with modified underwear that keep testes closer to the body and to the inguinal canal. Men can also take “testie-only” baths in warm water for 45 minutes a day for three weeks every six months. While these methods are low-tech and take a bit of dedication, they are free and available to everybody right now.

6 Circumcision: Not just Birth control: Guarding against a religious decision

Adam Ramsey Features Editor Ramsey.55@wright.edu

C

ircumcision is most often done soon after birth, so many men do not remember having the procedure done. Some might not be familiar with the difference between a circumcised or uncircumcised penis and some might not even know why they were circumcised. When a male baby is born, there is a foreskin that is attached to the shaft of the penis, which covers its head, or the glans. Circumcision is the process of removing this foreskin, exposing the glans to air. This is done for a variety of reasons, both religious and medical. Circumcision has its origin in religious ritual and is common in both Judaism and Islam. However, there are many non-religious parents that choose to have their sons circumcised. “When the glans is exposed to air, its skin gets thicker. It responds to the rubbing on your underwear or the diaper, but it gets thicker,” Dr. Max Rubin with the Wright State Physicians Department of Dermatology said. “With the foreskin, the skin of the glans is so thin that it lets syphilis and a whole bunch of other bacteria through it which can cause ulcers, syphilis and other diseases, including HIV. When you take the foreskin off, you find that the glans is more resistant to these diseases.” According to Dermatology in General Medicine, Fourth Edition, those who are uncir-

cumcised are ten times more likely to develop Urinary Tract Infections and have a greater chance to contract syphilis, HPV and other diseases. Though Rubin does acknowledge that circumcision does aid in the prevention disease, he does encourage circumcised people to take caution. “The vast majority of physicians would say that you are much less likely to get some of the serious diseases,” Rubin said. “Now, HIV is pretty good at getting in your body. It’s not total protection, but it does a significantly better job.” There are also other harmful conditions that circumcision guards against. Phimosis is when the foreskin is too tight to retract over the glans as normal. With phimosis, if the foreskin ever retracts behind the glans, it can get stuck and become gangrenous, according to Rubin. According to Dermatology in General Medicine, routine circumcision was recommended in the 1970’s, causing a spike in the number of circumcisions performed. 1978 reported 85 percent of children were circumcised in the United States. In 1987, the number had fallen to 61 percent. Dermatology in General Medicine said that circumcion could result in amputation, excess skin removal, meteal ulceration and psychological stress, if done without anesthesia, although these risks are less common.

ontraception is not a new thing. People have been looking for ways to have risk-free hanky panky for centuries, leading to a number of scientifically inaccurate or outdated methods of keeping your oven bunless. The Dittrick Medical History Center’s online exhibit on the history of contraception gives us a look into these methods. Condoms are a historical invention that we use to this day, although the condoms of our time period take a different form than the lovergloves of the past. Before rubber became more accessible, condoms were made of materials like, “linen, sheep gut, or fish bladder,” according to the Dittrick Medical History Center. They gained popularity after 1500 A.D. due to syphilis spreading throughout Europe and the Americas. There were also versions of female birth control medicines being sold in the mid 1800s. Some took the form of pills and tablets, others could

have been loose herbs to be steeped in tea or to be dissolved in alcohol. Douching was considered to be an effective means of birth control before the 1930s, according to the Dittrick Medical History Center, when the method was found to have a high failure rate. In addition to being ineffective, many contain chemicals that would cause harm to the vaginal and uterine area, through inflammation, irritation or burning. Cervical caps, diaphragms and sponges were inserted into the vagina to provide a barrier. Contraceptive sponges were believed to provide a protection rate of 55 to 95 percent, according to the Dittrick Medical History Center. Also, in 1873, the Comstock Act was instituted, making it illegal to mail contraceptives. In 1932 a package of diaphragms had been arranged to be sent to a doctor, who was also an activist

that fought against the Comstock Act. The package of diaphragms was confiscated by the government. In 1936, the package of diaphragms won a lawsuit which contributed to the overturning of the Comstock Act, allowing birth control ro be sold and distrubuted. In the early 1900s calendar methods were encouraged as an effective means of contraception. These methods included keeping track of ovulation times and choosing to have sex during the “safe period.” However, according to the Dittrick Medical History Museum, “even when used flawlessly, calendar-based methods result in a high pregnancy rate.”

NEWS 9 Not having sex has its benefits

A look at abstinence Adam Ramsey Features Editor Ramsey.55@wright.edu

N

ot having sex? That is not a bad thing. Abstinence carries benefits that provoke some to choose it as a lifestyle. Abstinence can be defined in many ways, making it difficult to precisely understand what it is. “I see abstinence as a term that can be easily misunderstood if we don’t start with definitions. Does masturbation count, or are you disqualified when you do so? There’s also the question of oral sex,” Tracy Steele, Associate Professor and Chair of the Sociology and Anthropology department, said. “Some people are very strict with their definitions of abstinence. That could mean no self-pleasure whatsoever.

That’s the kind of conversation we need to have with one another.” However, according to Steele, when it comes to research through surveys abstinence is considered a decision to not have sexual contact with others for a period of time. Though abstinence involves a decision to avoid sexual contact with others, it is not the same thing as asexuality. “People that consider themselves asexual don’t have high levels of sexual desire,” Patricia Schiml, Research Assistant Professor and Lecturer in Behavioral Neuroscience said. “They don’t feel a strong need to connect with other people, whereas people those that choose abstinence do have these desires, but they’re

choosing not to engage in it for a period of time.” People make the decision to avoid sexual contact for many reasons. “Some people choose to be abstinent to take a break from sex within relationships and focus on more emotional, cognitive and intimate elements that are non-physical before or in place of having sex,” Schiml said. “Historically, when we look at it, religious reasons are the dominant reasons for abstinence, especially for high school and younger, but as we get older, the two top reasons are a fear of sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy,” Steele said, when providing reasons people choose to be abstinent. Though proper education and use of contraception can prevent pregnancy, William

Romine, Assistant Professor in Biological Sciences, said that contraception is ineffective in protecting against all kinds of STDs. “If a condom is used properly, it is over 98 percent effective in preventing STDs like HIV which are transmitted through sexual body fluids and blood,” said Romine. “Other STDs like genital warts and herpes, which can spread through contact with genital sores, are more difficult to prevent using a condom since the condom must provide a barrier against contact with the sore for the entire duration of sexual activity.” Romine also said that monogamy and abstinence can also be effective ways to avoid STDs. “Proper use of protective devices like condoms is cer-

tainly a way to reduce the chances of contracting an STD, but these are not 100 percent. The act of monogamy, or having a single sexual partner who you know well, is also very effective providing you are their only sexual partner. Monogamy works best when partners are honest with each other about their sexual history, and get tested for STDs to ensure that they are not putting their partner at risk,” Romine said. “While there are many ways to prevent STDs, abstinence is the only way to reduce your chances of contracting an STD completely.” When it comes down to it, taking the proper precautions in testing and contraception is imperative to avoid the adverse effects of sex.

The bill was killed last year on a 4740 vote, but passed this time around by a vote of 55-40. The legislation, in addition to the 6-week rule, would not make any exceptions for pregnancies conceived out of rape or incest. Many Republicans argue that the bill will not stand up in court and will jeopardize other anti-abortion legislation, but others insist that the bill could be a key to overturning Roe v. Wade. The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio has stated that they will file a lawsuit if

the bill ends up passing, although the future of the bill remains in doubt. It faces opposition from Senate President Keith Faber and Gov. John Kasich. Two years ago, the Senate refused to take up the bill. As an alternative to the Heartbeat Bill, Ohio Right to Life is seeking to ban abortion at 20 weeks gestation, when a fetus can feel pain. The current laws uphold that states cannot prevent abortions unless a fetus is developed enough to live outside the womb, which is generally around 24 weeks gestation. The bill would require a doctor to test for a fetal heartbeat and would subject that doctor to a felony charge if he proceeds with an abortion once one is detected. facebook.com/theguardianonline

ake way, breast implants. These past two years have seen a more popular body mod procedure and it’s plastic surgeons’ new bottom line. A report released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) finds rear-end lifts and augmentations are among the fastest-growing cosmetic procedures around the country, with silicone implants nearly doubling between 2013 and 2014. For these procedures, surgeons have been opting for fat grafting, using fat from other parts of the body to enhance patients’ buttocks and give them more perk to mask age and sagging. The ASPS’s data shows @wsuguardian

that surveys from over 900 doctors found rear silicone implants nearly doubled to 1,863 nationwide over the last two years. The fat grafting procedure rate rose to over 11,000. Another similar organization, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, found an even bigger increase. 901 doctor surveys revealed over 11,000 rearend augmentations in 2013 and over 21,000 in 2014. Dr. Scot Glasberg, president of the ASPS, says people are “focusing more on that area of their body,” with an increased interest in enhancing the buttocks. According to surgeons, recent attributions for this rising gluteal trend lie in the media. Celebrities are sitting on the celebration of their www.theguardianonline.com

assets, and the saturation is seeping down to the public. “I definitely understand and see all the butt-craze,” said WSU junior Chris Rogers. “There have been so many songs about butts in the past few years. Busta Rhymes had one. Jennifer Lopez has one called ‘Booty.’ There’s one called ‘Bubble Butt.’ And this whole twerking thing too. You can’t get away from it.” Critics are attributing augmentation rises to medical marketing, convincing some Americans of these procedures despite thousands of dollars and physical risks. Doctors themselves are more involved than they have been before, using direct-toconsumer advertising, online forums and reality-TV shows to grow their markets. April 8, 2015

eturning nine of his 11 starters, Wright State coach Pat Ferguson is busy preparing his young team for the 2015 season, which begins in August. While WSU’s first regular season game is still months away, the Raiders are actively facing other college squads from the area. This weekend, WSU hosts a trio of teams for a split exhibition. WSU relied heavily on a large freshmen class last season en route to a 6-10-1 season. In Ferguson’s tenth season at Wright State, the Raiders finished below .500 for the first time. “The spring is really important for freshmen,” Ferguson said. “Right now, we have 21 players on the roster; 12 of them are freshmen. This is a time where they can make mistakes without fear of the games being quite as important. It is an important time for them and things are going very well.” That progress was evident two weeks ago when WSU defeated Ohio University 1-0 in a spring exhibition. The Raiders lost to OU in the regular season. “At points in the game, we had as many as eight freshman on the field at one time,” Ferguson said.

Joining the 12 freshmen is a pair of transfers who have helped WSU during the spring. Niki Romero transferred from North Carolina after playing on the US Under-18 squad two years ago. “The coach of North Carolina called and said, ‘She is an awesome player, just the kids playing in front of her just happen to be a little older and a little more athletic,’” Ferguson said. “From a pedigree and a resume, she is probably the biggest kid that has come in and she has come in and done a great job.” Ferguson will have seven additional players joining his roster in the fall, five of whom are local. Out of the five local players joining the Raiders in the fall, four have played under Ferguson at the club level. “Realistically, at each position, we have two or three players that could almost interchange,” Ferguson said. “We have a tremendous amount of depth next year. I would expect up to three of those new players could start.” With seven incoming freshmen joining 12 sophomores, Ferguson expects to have a core squad that will stick together for the next three seasons. “I think the next three years look very, very bright,” Ferguson said.

right State junior pitcher Montana Wear hurled both games of a doubleheader on Saturday against Youngstown State and all seven innings in the game on Sunday, helping the Raiders to a threegame sweep. She collected eight strikeouts over the weekend to increase her season total to 70, ranked first in the Horizon League. “We’re relying on her a lot to go out there and give us a chance,” said head coach Lynn Curylo about junior pitcher Montana Wear. “She’s capable, able and has the ability to shut down batters.” After a four-game losing streak, the Raiders bounced back with a series sweep against the Penguins over the weekend. They improved their conference record to 6-2 putting them in a first place tie with Oakland. “We came out and executed our game plan,” said Curylo. “We got back to who we are and what we do at the plate.” Wear has pitched a confer-

ence-high 140 innings so far this season and has collected nine wins with a 4.15 earned run average. She has 18 complete games, one shutout and is holding opponents to a .290 batting average. “She’s coming into her own,” said Curylo. “She’s starting to find her own identity as a pitcher.”

Sophomore shortstop Becka Peterson has been on a roll recently by winning Horizon League Player of the Week last week and driving in six runs on four hits over the weekend. She ranks second on the team with 20 RBIs and a .500 slugging percentage. “She’s been putting in extra time,” said Curylo. “She’s getting more swings in so she feels

more comfortable when she’s up to bat.” Sophomore second baseman Libby Pfeffer is tied for the team lead with 35 hits, five homeruns and a .340 batting average. Senior centerfielder Jess Gorman also has 35 hits and five homeruns but has a batting average of .333. She has scored a team-high 22 runs and also leads the team and conference with 10 doubles. The Raiders (10-24) are winners of three straight games but Curylo wants to see more. “I think defensively, we need to continue to make plays consistently,” Curylo said. “We’ve had days where the hitting has been on fire. We’ve had days where the defense has been on fire. “We’re getting closer and closer,” Curylo added. “It’s a matter of getting hot all at once. I think this is a good time.”

right State softball left fielder Angie Clark uses her speed to cover ground in the outfield, and continues to excel off the field. Clark and her teammates are involved with the WSU community. From handing out water to autograph signings at various campus events. It was Clark’s own initiative that launched the team’s latest efforts to stay involved. WSU head coach Lynn Curylo received a text from Clark relaying the story of 2015 Ms. Wheelchair Ohio, Jasmine Spradley, who is from WSU and looking for funds to compete in the Miss Wheelchair America pageant. As a result of this message, the team will now be part of the fundraising efforts.

“We are going to have Jasmine come out and throw the first pitch, and we are going to try to raise some funds to make this happen for her.” Out of Huber Heights Wayne

“We are going to have Jasmine come out and throw the first pitch and we are going to try to raise some funds to make this happen for her.”

High School, Clark chose to play at Wright State since it was close to her home roots and it would allow her parents to travel to her games. “Every home game, I have people in the stands from my family,” Clark said. facebook.com/theguardianonline

Clark and the other Wright State seniors divvy up the leadership roles with each other. “I think right now, it would be to lead the outfield and make sure everyone knows what they’re doing and what their responsibilities are,” Clark said. Clark is motivated by the players of the next generation that watch her make plays in the outfield and out of the box. “I like to try to lead by example. I think doing that and knowing you’re a role model for younger players that are probably in the stands and watching,” Clark said, “whatever you do, they’re going to try to either do it or look up to it.” Clark’s personality is a spark for the team that it will miss after she graduates, according to Curylo. “I think that she always brings excitement, intensity and humor. “Getting to be part of a family here is really worth it in the end,” Clark said. For Clark, one of the more memorable games this season was a comeback victory against Valparaiso. “It was the first game against them, and we came back and stole it in the sixth or seventh. Games like that I like to see from us because it’s a lot of fight,” Clark said. “We could have just laid down in the beginning.” Clark was named Horizon League Player of the Week a week ago after going 8 for 14 with three doubles and nine RBIs. This honor is further evidence that Clark’s hard work on the field pays off, according to Curylo. “It’s nice when the hard work actually pays off, and you get recognized for it. It’s great recognition for our program,” Curylo said. April 8, 2015

Fluttering feelings: The science of butterflies Olivia Rutherford News Writer Rutherford.24@wright.edu

L

ove and heartbreak are emotions, but there are times they can become physical embodiments. One such example includes the feeling of ‘butterflies in your stomach’ when you see our crush. Butterflies are essentially part of your body’s ‘fight-orflight’ response, like when you suspect threats to your survival. The fear of having your heart broken by a potential love interest can cause the muscles in your stomach to become extra sensitive. Our bodies can freak out about the situation. Once the human body reacts with the ‘fight-or-flight’ response and the butterflies feeling starts, your mind becomes nervous. The more

nervous you become, the harder it can be to think and speak clearly in addition to being able to sit or stand still. According to pediatrician Dr. Howard Bennett, the feeling of having butterflies in your stomach is attributed to stress responses in the body. While there is blood flowing freely to your lungs and muscles, there isn’t as much reaching other important organs, namely your stomach. This issue tends to cause nausea. This is a feeling that some people are able to easily overlook while many others can not. It’s the same as when you feel flushed before presenting in front of your class or going in for a job interview. According to Forbes, there are a few tips and tricks to

beating this anxiety reaction: 1. Think positively and be confident: don’t get yourself down about the person you have a thing for by thinking you’re not good enough for them. Show them who you are and why they should take the time to discover more about you. 2. Use the anxiety to your advantage: let it power you to ask that person for a short date at a coffee house or lunch. Use your racing heart to drive you to be a confident and assertive you. 3. Take a breath and take your time: if you made plans to ask them out during today’s class, but feel too nervous, take your time. There will be another class in two days which will give you time to relax about the situation.

Spooning with a stranger: America’s new enterprise Would you hire a professional cuddler? 77.6% No Leah Kelley Editor-in-Chief Kelley.90@wright.edu

P

rofessional cuddling is an up-and-coming service in the United States. Whether you physically go to a cuddling storefront for your snuggles, or have a cuddler come to you, this lucrative business is actually entitled “Touch Therapy” and is geared toward eliminating loneliness, depression and anxiety through platonic interactions. The cuddle professional’s services aren’t cheap, ranging from $80 to $400 a session, depending on how long the cuddler works with you. The session bans all sexual activity and is meant for relaxation or therapeutic purposes only. While the whole operation seems a little strange, their goal is for their clients to be just as comfortable going to

snuggle with a stranger as they are going to a masseuse. “I was hesitant to try this service, but I did and I am very glad!” said Jonathan, a testimonial from thesnugglebuddies.com. “I was very nervous when I met my snuggler, but it didn’t take long for her to make me feel very comfortable. Her touch was the most genuine I’ve felt in a very long time and after the session I felt like a new person. I plan to make this a weekly thing.” Professional cuddling services claim that since the average human does not receive the proper amount of physical touch in a given day, the only way to rectify the problem is to supplement it with a professional service, like The Snuggle Buddies, or various other cuddling services specific to your city.
