urprise!... The PRCA announced this past month that they ARE NOT relocating the NFR and have signed a multi-year deal to keep the mega-event in Las Vegas. Hmmm… tough to figure out who came out on top on this one… or not. C’mon… all you have to do is look at who the players are and it’s not very hard to figure out at all. On one side you have the LVCVB (Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Bureau)… whose sole purpose is to bring events to the city. It’s staffed with experienced, media savvy, professionals who specialized in negotiating contracts, and are armed with a boatload of attorneys to make sure any deal they strike is ironclad. On the other side… well… without stepping on any toes or casting insults… let’s just say, or re-say… it wasn’t a fair fight. I‘m not sure what this whole thing was really all about… i.e. what the PRCA was attempting to finagle by trying to hold the city of Las Vegas hostage with the threat of relocating its cash cow, the NFR, but I’m pretty certain there was more to it than the angle they were purporting. Whatever they were trying to do, I think they quickly figured

out they were outmatched, and once the LVCVB unleashed their media machine… it was over. At that point, the most challenging part of getting the whole deal finalized from the LVCVB’s perspective, was to allow the PRCA to accept the deal without looking like they got completely punked. Again, I have no idea what kind of internal (non-disclosed) motivations were at play, I’m just pretty sure they existed. Ultimately, it was just a couple of months of drama resulting in everything continuing just as it was… Surprise! Speaking of everything staying the same… that’s really one of the main problems with the PRCA. It’s a common problem with organizations that have experienced a good measure of success and then become bloated by it. The PRCA knows, and has known for some time that the sport is changing and that they need to do something to keep pace with those changes. The problem is… they are just bloated… and until they are forced to, they are going to continue following the same model that worked for them during their heyday. That’s why it’s going to be interesting to see how “The American” all shakes out. A one-day continued on page 47

National All Amateurs 2014 La Fiesta Feb 1st & 2nd, 2014 Dunn’s Arena, Litchfield Park, AZ It wasn’t just Super Sunday in New Jersey, it was most definitely a Super Sunday at Dunn’s Arena on the big game weekend. Randy Bailey of St. Paul, Alberta drove home in the new dually. It was exciting as Randy and his partner Frank Harasimiuk also from Alberta, had to have a rope off to see who would get the truck. Randy ended up with the keys, but there were no hard feelings between the two as just right after the rope off they were already making plans to rope at the next roping. The ladies showed up ready to rope in the Ladies Only- Remembering Toni Tryree roping, and that is just what they did. Madeline Wuertz and Cheyenne Sherwood won the roping with a 23.76 on three and took home $3,710 and trophy buckles. Many other great prizes were awarded to the ropers from a breastcollar to Heart J Cowgirl necklace, Gordy Alderson bit, to a couple bottles of wine. In the #13 Big Gun’s roping the team that ended up on top of the list was Bryce Garcia and Steven Gaona. They won the roping with a 27.24 on four and pocketed a nice check to the tune of $10,000. Not a bad day’s work for the two “Big Gun’s”. The Open roping went to Kyle Roberts and TJ Brown with a 36.79 on 5 for $5,000. Close behind them to win second was Derrick Begay and Clint Harry with a 37.51.

World’s Richest One-Day Rodeo, RFD-TV’S THE AMERICAN

he stage is set for THE AMERICAN to become the largest, richest oneday rodeo in the history of the sport. Taking place at Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium on March 2, 2014, with an estimated attendance of 75,000, RFDTV’s THE AMERICAN presented by Polaris RANGER is the single largest 1day cash prize event in the entire history of rodeo. With $2 million on the line, the best athletes in the world will be gathering in Dallas to compete in one epic day of raw rodeo will, skill and power. THE AMERICAN is inviting the top 10 athletes in each of the traditional rodeo sports, as well as the top 10 from the PBR. The top 10 bull riding contestants have been invited from the PBR Finals in Las Vegas, and the remainder of the primary rodeo sports contenders have been determined after the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. In addition to the 10 invites in each event, THE AMERICAN has made five additional spots available for any rodeo athlete in the world through five regional qualifiers. If one of those athletes goes on to win their respective event at THE AMERICAN they will split an additional bonus pool of $1-million dollars in prize money. From the regional qualifiers contestants that have qualified have to make it to the top five in THE AMERICAN semifinals in Mesquite, Texas on February 22-23, 2014. Once they have made the top five of the semifinals in their respective event, they now move on to compete in THE AMERICAN in Dallas on March 2, 2014.

he Village of Quemado is nestled in the mountains of New Mexico on Highway 60 just east of the Arizona border. During the Great Depression and until the early sixties Quemado was a “Stopping Off’ point for coast to coast travelers. The area was surrounded by numerous family cattle ranches. These ranching families gathered together once a year for an annual rodeo usually held the first weekend of August. This was a good time of year as it also coincided with the rainy season and was before the gathering of cattle started for the ranches in the fall. Today, many of these ranches have been subdivided, yet there still remains an interest in supporting and holding fast to the “Western Heritage” and way of life. Quemado has records showing that there was a roping club in the community that dates back to the early 1960’s. The last rodeo that was held in Quemado was in 1975. In 2006 The Quemado Community Equestrian Association (Q.C.E.A.) was formed. The Q.C.E.A., a 501c3 nonprofit organization was founded to keep the heritage of rodeo alive in the community. The Q.C.E.A. goal, was to reestablish rodeo as an event which encouraged youth to embrace their heritage as well as promote other equestrian events, which would encourage travelers to consider Quemado a “Stopping Off ” point again. In the past the Annual Rodeo attracted participants and spectators from the nearby state of Arizona. The rodeo was a three day event which included a Junior Rodeo and a two day Open Rodeo, making it a Family Affair. On April 17, 2007 the New Mexico Rodeo Council, awarded the Q.C.E.A. resources to purchase a portable rodeo facility. These resources were to replace the Quemado rodeo arena that was built in the 1950’s. The old facility had fallen to disrepair and was no longer a safe place to hold events. The Q.C.E.A. wasted no time after they received the resources to get to work. Since the facility has been completed the organization has held a number of events that have helped to support their mission of rodeo. With the help of community members, the new arena was ready for its first Team-Roping in 2007. This event brought in 496 teams and a large number of spectators who spent time and money at local businesses. Other events followed, March 2008, the Quemado High School held its first District Horse judging in the new arena, and approximately 12 other schools participated. In July 2009 the Q.C.E.A. hosted its first Junior Rodeo. This one day event attracted almost 90 contestants as well as many spectators who again supported local businesses. In 2010 the Q.C.E.A. along with the N.M.J.R.A. hosted a Youth Association Rodeo. In 2010 & 2011, the Q.C.E.A. hosted a Junior Youth Bull riding which drew contestants from as far as Tucson, Casa Grande, Arizona and El Paso, Texas. In addition to the other events Mini Bull riding has also been on the list of events that Q.C.E.A. has hosted. “Richard McGuire was the first to buy some mini bulls and hosted the first event. He then sold to Travis Sullivan who has really taken it to another level and has worked with the organization for the past 5 years.” Says Ricky Chavez, one of the board members

and founders of the Q.C.E.A., “You could say Quemado is the home of the original mini buckers.” The Q.C.E.A. has also hosted open youth rodeos, these rodeos have been very successful. The open youth rodeo in the past has been followed by an NMJRA rodeo. These youth rodeos have been a big success in Quemado and have run a close second with the mini bull ridings as

a signature event for the community. “In my opinion, if we do not build up our Youth Rodeos. We may see a time when rodeo as we once knew it, will be gone.” Says Ricky Chavez. “We would also like to hopefully one day be able to promote an open rodeo. My goal is to go back to hosting a youth rodeo on Friday and an open Rodeo on Saturday and Sunday. Whether it be an open rodeo, youth

rodeo, team roping or bucking bull event, there is no doubt that the new rodeo arena has proven to be good for the community of Quemado in many ways, from encouraging the youth to embracing the western heritage of the community to providing stimulus to the local economy. Whatever it is, it is good to know the tradition continues with the Quemado Community Equestrian Association.

uckeye, Arizona was the place to be February 7- 9, 2014 and Dynamite Productions and the WSTR were the ones making it happen. It was a great weekend for both weather and roping. The ropers provided that to be true as the trailers filled the parking lot. The ropings were huge with the #11 and #9 just both under 400 and the #10 was over 400. The ropers took advantage of the great weather and enjoyed competing at one of the best events of the winter series.

Sharp Productions Winter Team Roping Series

anuary 15, 2014 kicked off the first roping of the Sharp Productions Winter Series Team Roping. The Rockin Horse Ranch indoor arena in Moriarty, NM was the place to be and over 200 teams proved it to be true as they entered up for the #12 Slide and the #10 handicap ropings. ith his fifth-place finish in the average at the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo Feb. 9, Joe Beaver became just the fifth man in rodeo history to surpass $3 million in career earnings. Paired with team roping heeler and godson - Reno Gonzales, Beaver tied for sixth in the finals and each man earned $3,175 for placing fifth in the average, with a time of 18.4 seconds on three head. “I had no idea I was close to $3 million, and then my good friend Chuck Doebbler called me after the rodeo and told me,” Beaver said. “I quit really competing (full time) so long ago that it was something that hadn’t crossed my mind anymore. This shouldn’t have taken so long; I was at $2.8 million about six years ago.” Beaver - who was only $1,514 short of the mark entering Fort Worth - joins the exclusive club of Trevor Brazile, Cody Ohl, Fred Whitfield and Billy Etbauer as the only men to make $3 million in

PRCA history. Brazile is the only man in history to earn more than $5 million. “That’s a pretty elite group right there,” Beaver said. “That is what makes this so cool, that I join those guys. I’m pretty much done rodeoing, but I still go with Reno, and if it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I would’ve reached this mark.” Beaver - an eight-time world champion - made $2,191,749, and won five world titles, in tie-down roping. The 48-year-old has made $338,898 in team roping and $34,247 in steer roping. He says not to look for him to make a run at $4 million. “Oh man, no way,” Beaver said with a laugh. “I’m good where I’m at, and I still run rodeo clinics. The TV (commentary) is more my deal nowadays.” Rich Skelton - an eight-time team roping world champion, and 20-time Wrangler NFR qualifier - is the man who is the closest to making the group a halfdozen. Skelton currently has $2,654,843 in career earnings.

True Champions Chasing Timed Event Title Biggest Names in Professional Rodeo Are Ready for This Year’s ‘Ironman’ Competition

Few men can lay claim to being the Timed Event Champion of the World. Fewer can say they’ve done it twice; fewer yet have won the prestigious title more than that. In 2013, Californian Daniel Green placed his name on that hallowed list with his third gold buckle in the most unique event ever created in the world of rodeo. Las Vegas Events and PRCA Agree on Extension to Keep the Wrangler NFR in Las Vegas Through 2024 World’s richest and most prestigious rodeo to continue its run of 270 consecutive sold-out performances in Las Vegas Following unanimous votes by the Las Vegas Events Board of Trustees and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Board of Directors, both organizations jointly announced today that they have reached an agreement to keep the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas through 2024. The new agreement will begin following the 2014 Wrangler NFR. Per the agreement, LVE will guarantee $16.5 million annually in purse and sponsorship for the Wrangler NFR. From 2015-19, the contestant purse will be $10 million, while stock contractors will receive $3 million annually. The contestants will be guaranteed $10,000 each year, which will not be offset by contestant winnings. From 2020-24, there will be cost-ofliving increases to each purse and guarantee. Additional elements of the agreement include a season-long sponsorship program with the PRCA, presenting sponsorships of the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo and 12 RAM Circuit Final Rodeos, as well as the National Finals Steer Roping, if it is held in Las Vegas.

Qualification is based on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Standings. Rodeo Cowboys Turned Movie Cowboys

ince rodeo began, many men and women have made a career out of it. For some, rodeo is a way of life. A good way of life. You may not know it, but some of our most famous movie cowboys and cowgirls started in rodeo, then moved on. Rodeo was a stepping stone to this group. I’d like to think that, their having cowboy roots, is one of the factors which made them convincing when they became cowboys of the silver screen. Many know that Ben Johnson (1918 1996) was a “real” cowboy long before becoming a “reel” cowboy. Raised on a ranch in Osage County, Oklahoma, his dad was also a rodeo hand. Young Ben rodeoed and worked as a cowboy until one day, in 1939, he was hired to take a string of horses from Oklahoma to Hollywood for a movie. He stayed on as a wrangler, then later became a stunt man. Soon he got bit parts in “B” Westerns and eventually moved on to starring roles in major films and became a legend. Always one who had a yearning for rodeo, in 1953 he took most of the year off from filming and

returned to the rodeo trail—becoming the World Champion Team Roper that year. His status as a World Champion caused his rodeo roots to stand out publicly. Johnson was but one of many “reel cowboys” who had rodeo roots however. None other than Will Rogers (1879 1935), another Oklahoman, got his start in show business as a trick roper and rider. After working as a cowboy on several ranches in different countries, Rogers landed a job with “Texas Jack’s Wild West Circus” in 1902. He traveled the world performing as “The Cherokee Kid.” Within a few years, Rogers took his act to Vaudeville. His career soon exploded and he became known as one of the most beloved cowboys, humorist, actors, writers and American Icons of the twentieth century. “Hoot” Gibson (1892 - 1962), born in Nebraska, was another great rodeo cowboy turned actor. Moving to California at a young age, Hoot became interested in rodeo, and competed at both ends of the arena. For many years, he rodeoed and worked in the film industry simultaneously. During the early 1900s, he won prestigious championships, including the All Around

title at the Pendleton Roundup and the steer roping championship at Calgary. After going away to WWI, Hoot returned to Hollywood where he became one of the most popular movie cowboys of the 1920s and early 30s. His fame was only second to that of Tom Mix during this time period. Tom Mix (1880 - 1940), although born in Pennsylvania to a merchant father, also had a career in rodeo before moving to the film industry. As a young man, Mix relocated to Oklahoma where he soon landed a job with the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West Show. He stood out as a trick rider and expert shot. He later went to Hollywood, where he got small parts, then bigger parts, and eventually became “King of the Cowboys,” long before Roy came along. Throughout his career, Mix must have retained an affection for rodeo. It has been said that whenever contract negotiations came up with the studios, he always threatened to go back working in a Wild West Show if a satisfactory deal was not made. Later in life, he even opened his own circus, which was more of a Wild West Show. On the heels of Rogers, Gibson and Mix were men like Rex Allen (1920 1999). Raised on a ranch near Willcox, Arizona, Allen began riding the rodeo circuit at a young age. Always handy with his guitar and pen, he also preformed as entertainment after many shows. While traveling the

East coast, he auditioned and landed a gig on Vaudeville as a singer/songwriter. From there he became a popular cowboy singer and eventually a sought-after actor in Hollywood Westerns. He became known as “The Arizona Cowboy” and enjoyed a long career. About this same time, Louis Burton Lindley, Jr. (1919 - 1983) was making a name for himself in the Western film industry as well. He was known to the world as “Slim Pickens.” Born and raised in California, Slim was an expert rider and an early age. After high school, he left home to work the rodeo circuit. He was told it would be “slim pickens” (not much money) in this line of work, and he then adopted it as his nickname. Slim worked primarily as

a rodeo clown and enjoyed a long cowboy career before trying his hand at the movies. His timing was great. Westerns were enjoying their “golden age” at the time and a true “hand” with a great personality such as his had no problems finding work. Although never really a superstar, one cannot think of Western actors without including Slim in the mix. Discovered while singing in Oklahoma, by none other than Will Rogers, Gene Autry (1907 - 1998), was not a rodeo hand growing up, but was raised a real cowboy. After becoming famous (and wealthy), he purchased the World Championship Rodeo Company in about 1942 and got involved BUILT BY-P/U DP in rodeo in a big way.W/CHNGS Autry’s company was one of the major stock contractors in rodeo until he sold in 1968. We could

not even began to mention all Autry accomplished as a cowboy here, but everyone knows he was one of the most well-known and popular cowboys from the 1900s. There were dozens of other rodeo cowboys who went to work in Hollywood making the classic Westerns. Yakima Canutt, Montie Montana, Ken Maynard, Art Acord, Sunset Carson, Wild Bill Elliot, and Jack Hoxie to name a few. Perhaps this is why, when watching certain Western movies, you can look at some fellows and think, “The way he handles himself, I bet he was a real cowboy before making movies.” A good many wranglers, stuntmen and background actors in the old Westerns (and modern ones as well) were real cowboys before finding work in the movies. For some, it was a natural transition from rodeo to playing a cowboy on-screen—and most said it paid better. CRX’D

“Toughest Sport on Dirt” at the Pit; 18th appearance in Albuquerque

he Professional Bull Riders 2014 Built Ford Tough Series returns to The Pit on March 21-23 with the Top 35 bull riders in the world, led by 2013 World Champion J.B. Mauney, and the fiercest bulls, featuring two-time World Champion Bull Bushwacker, for the 18th Ty Murray Invitational, presented by Sandia Resort & Casino in Albuquerque, N.M. For three days the bull riders will face off with foes more than 100 times their weight in sinewy brawn during 8-second battles where only one athlete will be left standing. In 2013, the Ty Murray Invitational drew recordbreaking crowds to The Pit, the most intimate venue on the PBR’s BFTS schedule, and in 2014 the PBR expects much of the same. The bull riding action begins Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 7:50 p.m. and Sunday at 1:50 p.m. Tickets, ranging in price from $15 to $100, are on sale now at the University of New Mexico Box Office, Albertson’s ticket outlet locations, www.unmtickets.com or via phone at 877-664-8661.

Six former PBR World Champions are expected to compete in Albuquerque – Mauney (2013), Silvano Alves (2011, 2012), Renato Nunes (2010), Kody Lostroh (2009) Guilherme Marchi (2008) and Mike Lee (2004). Joining these men will be fan favorites Jory Markiss, Douglas Duncan, Chase Outlaw, Ben Jones, L.J. Jenkins, Shane Proctor, defending event champion and 2013 Rookie of the Year Joao Ricardo Vieira and a host of young guns each looking to leave his mark in the Duke City. In addition to the greatest riders, the Ty Murray Invitational always features the best bulls in the PBR. Reigning World Champion bull Bushwacker will be in the line-up. It will be the last time Albuquerque fans will be able to see the legendary bull in action as he is retiring at the end of 2014. 2012 World Champion Asteroid, Smackdown, Meat Hook, Lightmaker’s Rango and Mick E Mouse headlined the Built Ford Tough Championship Round in 2013 and are expected to do the same in 2014. These athletes competed as the

finalists for the World Champion Bull title in Las Vegas in 2013 with Bushwacker capturing the $50,000 prize. The bull riders will face one bull each during Round 1 on Friday, Round 2 on Saturday and Round 3 on Sunday. Following Round 3, the Top 15 riders with the highest cumulative scores on at least two bulls will advance to the Built Ford Tough Championship Round that same day. The overall event winner will be the rider with the highest-combined score from all four rounds, earning at least $30,000 for first place. Albuquerque will be the 12th stop of 27 on the 2014 PBR Built Ford Tough Series schedule. The season kicks off Jan. 3-5 at the “World’s Most Famous Arena”, Madison Square Garden in New York. The season will conclude at the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas on Oct. 22-26, when the 2014 PBR World Champion, the bull rider who amasses the most points during the 2014 season, will receive the coveted World Championship belt buckle and $1 million bonus. The BFTS is televised every week on CBS, CBS Sports Network and networks around the world. BFTS telecasts are produced for the PBR under a multi-year agreement with David Neal Productions, a Los Angeles-based production company led by 34-time Emmy® Award winner and Peabody Award winner David Neal, who serves as executive producer.

he winner of the Rodeo Construction Bucking on the Rio Grande in Rio Rancho, NM February 1, 2014 came down to a battle between traveling partners: Robson Aragao, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Alex Cardozo, of Indaiatuba, Brazil. Ultimately, Aragao ended up on top after covering all three of his bulls at the inaugural Rio Rancho, New Mexico event, also the sixth stop on the 2014 Championship Bull Riding Road to Cheyenne Tour. Aragao bested an elite field of champion bull riders to win this title, and in the first round, only 5.5 points separated the 12 cowboys who earned the right to move on to the semi-finals round. Finishing at the top of the first round leader board was Michael Earl from Pflugerville, Texas, who scored 91.5 points on the reigning world champion bucking bull, Got It, owned by Lyndal Hurst. There were five successful riders in the semi-finals with the best four scores advancing to the Shoot-Out round. Craig Jackson led with a 90.5 point ride on Exclusive Genetics’ Flab Slab. But

Aragao was on his heels as he turned in a spectacular 89.5 performance on Esteban, a hometown bucking bull. When Dawn Collum of Waterflow, New Mexico flanked Esteban, she was expecting a much different trip. “I told Robson he usually goes right, but tonight he surprised me and went left, then changed it up turning back to the right.” Aragao, who calls Tyler, Texas home while competing on the Road to Cheyenne Tour, was able to match Collum’s bull jump for jump earning him a spot in the final round. With veteran CBR riders Cooper Kanngiesser and Craig Jackson bucking off in the first and second slot of the Shoot Out Round, Aragao put the first score on the leader board with his 89point ride on Mike Rawson’s Backdraft. With the fourth rider being the only one left who could beat him, Aragao stood on the chutes next to his best friend and cheered him on. With the crowd on its feet, Cardozo looked like he was the winner, but 3028 Stuntin Like My Daddy won the battle bringing Alex to the ground at 6.27 seconds. Standing next to 4-time World Champion Tuff Hedeman, Robson

Aragao accepted his second career event title on the CBR Road to Cheyenne tour. “ I am feeling great right now. I try many bulls to make 8 seconds, thank you CBR and great fans, this is my life.” Aragao collected $18,500 and a custom Hyo Silver trophy buckle as the first champion of the Rodeo Construction Bucking on the Rio Grande. CBR Million Dollar Bull Team Challenge wrapped up its first Rio Rancho competition with Cude Bucking Bulls claiming the top honors. Debuting two new bulls tonight, Benny Cude of Priddy, Texas was proud of his team’s efforts, as was flankman and bull manager Mike Jones: “I was really impressed with 821 High Dollar Habit who was ridden for the first time in his career. Every time we buck him he gets better and better each time.” High Dollar Habit’s unridden streak was broken by Alex Cardozo’s 89.5 point ride in round one. Bucking in the number two slot for Cude was Cude 54, a young 4 year old bull out of the Kish breeding program who experienced his first out tonight on the Road to Cheyenne tour bucking off 2013 PRCA Rookie of the Year Cooper Davis. Rounding out Cude’s team was 929 No Hands, a solid bull on his first long road trip, he carried Corey Bailey to an 89.5 point score.

Productions 1 rodeo with a $2 million payout is certain to shake up the rodeo landscape if it turns out to be a success. I love the concept … what’s not to love… and the contestants are absolutely going to come out the winners. The question is whether or not it turns out to be a profitable venture. If it is, the PRCA is in deep trouble. Nothing will change the landscape of an industry faster than a successful capitalistic venture. If it’s a success, more like it will surely follow. The rodeo scene will change so fast that the PRCA, in all its glory, will not be able to react fast enough. It would be interesting to see. If it is not successful, however, I’m sure the PRCA will only be emboldened by the failure, reassuring itself that the old model is still the only one that works. I, for one, hope ”The American” knocks a home run. Finally, I have to close by saying a few words about the recent Olympic Games. The Winter Olympics is the most inspiring display of human

achievement… EVER! These are not highly paid athletes, they don’t do it for notoriety… these are people who take hold of something, pursue it with all their energy and passion, dedicate and sacrifice themselves unto it… and all for the right reason. I respect that… its inspiring. It’s not even so much about winning or losing. I mean, there is no question they want to win, but I think that for most of them, the satisfaction that comes from showing up and somehow finding a way to take full advantage of all the work and sacrifice, at that one moment when it counts… what could be more satisfying than that? Okay… so I will confess that seeing just one guy parading around the ice on skates with all his sequins and rhinestones is about five too many for my taste, but for the rest of them… thanks for the inspiration

The AJRA had one of the largest rodeos in years at Casa Grande. The rodeo was followed by a carne asada dinner and goat roping. Much fun was had by all. Thanks to the Kent family for hosting these events! Two weeks later The AJRA cowboys and cowgirls headed to beautiful Lake Havasu City for another great rodeo. Here they were spoiled with warm weather, fabulous food by Select Glass, and fun at the 2nd Annual Korn Hole Tournament. A big thank you to Select Glass and Brad and Terri McFarlin for keeping everyone’s bellies full and supporting the families of the AJRA. Be sure to join AJRA in March for the next rodeo in Wickenburg!

All NMRA members and co-sanctioned associations that guarantee entry fees may fax/email entries into the NMRA office up to one week prior to the opening of phone entries. All non-members or associations that do not guarantee entry fees must call in entries and be prepared with a credit card that will be run that night for entry fees. If you must turnout of a rodeo for any reason including medical, emergency or vet release call the Turnout line (505-864-9426). AIRCA’s Mission The all Indian Rodeo Association acknowledges our Indian and western heritage culture and tradition as we promote organized professional entertainment as rodeo. The AIRCA is the choice of champions for contestants, sponsors and fans throughout Indian country in the United States and Canada. Established in 1957 AIRCA was inspired by visionary cowboys and cowgirls who embraced the values and traditions of sheepherder, ranchers, and farmers who lived freely on the open range of the Navajo Nation many years ago. The authenticity of their legacy is immortalized by AIRCA. The past 56 years is not only about humble beginnings, blazing a trail and endurance, but also about building a strong beacon of hope that helps preserve a way of life and soul of the Navajo Nation and Native America. In its 57th year AIRCA provides choice/opportunities to members. Jane Melby Wins $5,000 Jerry Ann Taylor Best Dressed Award at World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® by Johna Cravens for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Jane Melby of Burneyville, Okla., won the $5,000 Jerry Ann Taylor Best Dressed Award at the final championship round at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on Saturday, February 8. The Women’s Professional Rodeo Association and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame present the award. Jerry Ann Taylor, a 1986 honoree of the hall, was a flamboyant trick rider and roper who was known for her sense of style. Melby, who also qualified for Fort Worth’s championship round last year, said she realized then that the judges for the award were looking for something that catches the audience’s eye. The National Finals Rodeo (NFR) barrel

racer partnered with last year’s winner of the Jerry Ann Taylor award, Kendra Dickson, for her winning look. “When I left (after my second round run), I was second in the average and Kendra was tenth. I saw her and said ‘if you don’t make it back (to the championship round), would you be willing to dress me and we’ll split the award if I win.’” Dickson was excited about the opportunity, especially since she donates ten percent of all her winnings to the fight against childhood cancer. Melby was competing at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo and told Dickson, “You’re going to have to do all the work.” Dickson asked Melby for a pair of her pants and went to work. On Saturday, the two met at the Fort Worth rodeo. Melby’s husband Ryan got her horse ready and she put on her new wardrobe. Melby’s, whose quiet personality is usually reflected in her wardrobe, surprised many who have known her for years by wearing colorful magenta. “What I learned is that it was amazing how I turned everybody’s head just walking from my trailer to the arena,” Melby said, “and not in a bad way, when I walked through the parking lotBUILT they noticed BY VSA me. It put smilesI on people’s faces.” “Even my husband was excited,” she said, “he said ‘it made your cheeks rosy. It made you shine.”

Dickson’s wardrobe assistance extended to Melby’s tack and included a saddle cloth, leg wraps, breast collar and headstall accents. Although Melby finished just out of the money in all three rounds at the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo, she won $2,000 in the average. Melby plans to sell her seasoned horses within the next few weeks and spend the summer close to home working with young horses. “My kids are 17 and 18 and I want to stay home for this last summer with them,” she said. The Jerry Ann Taylor award was presented at the 2012 and 2013 NFR to Mary Walker and Fallon Taylor respectively, and is only presented at the NFR and at the Fort Worth rodeo. Pam Minick of Fort Worth, a National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame board member and honoree and former WPRA vice president, said the award is to encourage women in professional rodeo to carry on the tradition of wearing colorful western attire in the rodeo arena. “Her sense of style was an inspiration,” Minick said. “We owe it to the heritage of the sport to bring this back.” CRX’D Barrel racing has a long history with the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo®. The Fort Worth rodeo began holding an invitational ranch girls barrel race in 1955, not long after barrel racing was invented.

t must have been very embarrassing for the 74 scientists, who meant to go to Antarctica to validate global warming theories, when the Russian ship they were on got stuck in ice ten feet thick far from where it should NOT have been if the polar cap was melting. Even more humiliating, ice breakers couldn’t get within ten miles of the frozen ship so the group had to be saved by helicopters and ships burning fossil fuels, you know, those terrible greenhouse gas emitting tools of the right-wing rich. Couple that event with last month’s polar vortex that sent thermometers plummeting to record lows and it hasn’t been a very good time to be a global warming fanatic, or “warmist” as they are now called. Despite the fact the earth has been in a cooling off stage the last 15 years, the “warmists” still cling to their trumped up theories like a Titanic passenger clinging to a life preserver.

Much to the scientist’s dismay, this aborted scientific expedition will be remembered for suggesting that maybe we aren’t all gonna be cooked medium well; Hollywood isn’t going to drop off into the ocean (darn it); and the leader of this embarrassing fiasco is not going to get good seats, or be a speaker at the next United Nations confab on global warming. I was especially interested in this story because the leader of the scientific team was Chris Turney, a professor of climate change at the University of New South Wales in Australia, of which I am an alumnus. When I attended the Australian university I was immediately shocked at the differences between their educational system and ours. At college in the U.S. tests were based on one’s knowledge of facts; there were right and wrong answers. In Australia in the 1970’s a test might consist of one question asking for a

defense of your opinion. If you wanted a good grade, and who didn’t, you would mimic back the opinion of your professor. Perhaps this is best illustrated by showing how I’d spin this example of a typical Australian test question if Chris Turney was my professor: “Question: How would you defend the position that global warming was still occurring if you were stuck like a tongue on the frozen, sinking hull of the Titanic.” My Answer: This was just an unfortunate circumstance that never would have happened if the brilliant scientist, Mr. Turney, would have also had on board some aerosol cans, Al Gore and a bunch of cows because they would have emitted so many greenhouse gases it would have melted all the ice in the southern hemisphere. I’ll admit there hasn’t been any actual scientific evidence of global warming the last 15 years but according to my great teacher, Mr. Turney, there’s a good explanation for that. Coincidentally, during that time frame the U.S. cattle herd was shrinking, therefore it can easily be deduced that fewer cows equals less methane gas being emitted, equals cooler temperatures. If anything, this just proves that the United Nations should immediately assume a leadership role in regulating the number of cows in America. The U.N. could limit U.S. cow numbers by levying a cow tax, the funds to be used in supporting the thousands of people like my wonderful teacher, Mr. Turney, who are currently making a very good living in the global warming industry. We’ve had many climate events lately that have all been caused by global warming, including hurricanes, tornadoes, polar vortexes, hot summers, cold winters, drouths, floods and blizzards. The recent experience of my truly gifted professor being frozen stiff like an intellectual popsicle, clearly shows that governments should take a far more aggressive role in combatting climate change by having their hand firmly on the earth’s thermostat. We can’t let the hopes and dreams of the warmists, like my brilliant teacher, Mr. Turney, be frozen in all that ice, because as we all know, the weather is far too important to be left up to Mother Nature. wwwLeePittsbooks.com
