FEDERAL BLESSINGS It’s always a pleasure to welcome all the motorsport lovers who in these days are visiting the Zuera International Circuit on occasion of the European Karting Championships – a top level FIA event that brings the best competition of the sporting base together with the greatest future talents of motorsports. The stars of this event are the over one hundred drivers of the KZ and KZ2 categories, plus the young aces of the Academy Trophy, who have come to the Aragón region with their families, teams, and fans. On its part, the Zuera International Circuit deserves compliments for having earned the absolute trust of the International Federation and being chosen once again - for the sixth time in the last few years - to host one of the most prestigious competitions on calendar. Therefore, I extend my most sincere congratulations to the managers and staff of the Zuera circuit, who set benchmark for what it means to work hard and well, within and beyond our borders. Needless to say, I also wish to spend a few words on the representatives of the Spanish karting movement who are joining us on track for this international event. I am sure that the drivers supported by the Racing for Spain program will again leave a mark in this prestigious competition and distinguish themselves with impressive results. So good luck to them all! Finally, I would like to conclude by thanking all sponsors, partners, and institutions that have contributed to the organization of this international event. Without them, it would be impossible to create a show as big as this, which every year gives Aragón the opportunity, pleasure, and honor of enjoying karting in its best form.

Carlos Gracia President of the R. F. E. de A. and FIA Vice President

KZ - ROUND 1

At the Napoli International Circuit in Sarno the KZ was welcomed by a warm and sunny day for the first official qualifying sessions of its European title hunt. The Tony Kart/Vortex combo managed to best the field by a few tenths of a second, with former champion Marco Ardigò conquering pole position and Flavio Camponeschi scoring the second best time. The brand new Mad Croc karts debuted with an excellent third time with Ben Hanley (Croc Promotions/TM Racing), behind the top two by a mere hundredth of a second. After seeing Ardigò and Camponeschi keep up their dominant ways throughout the heats and the prefinal, with Ardigò unchallenged in the lead, the tables turned when it counted most. At the start of the final, Camponeschi dashed from second on grid and snatched the lead, leaving Ardigò to battle with Hanley. The Brit studied the Italian’s moves for a couple of laps, then passed him and started an incredible chase after Camponeschi. Hanley continued on his quest for the lead for the entire race with very tight lap time differences, yet never came close to questioning Camponeschi’s superiority.

06

In the meantime, Jèrèmy Iglesias (Alpha Karting/TM Racing) managed to shorten the gap from Ardigò, who was either having a tough time keeping glued to the two leaders or strategically chose to postpone his challenge for the win to the Zuera round. In the second half of the race, it was a hard charging Patrick Hajek (Praga/Parilla) who took over from Iglesias with a wonderful pass, joining the leading trio for the remainder of the action. After 18 laps, Camponeschi completed his masterpiece run with a comfortable win, crossing the line almost 1 full second over Hanley (despite his best lap of 1’04.862) and over 2 seconds over teammate Ardigò, with Hajek following in fourth and Iglesias fifth. Simo Puhakka (CRG/Maxter), Jordon Lennox-Lamb (Birel Art/Parilla) and Mirko Torsellini (Ricciardo Kart/ TM racing) rounded off the Top 8. As we enter the second round of the KZ European Championship in Zuera, the point tally is as follows: Camponeschi 33, Hanley 29, Ardigò 26, Hajek 18, Iglesias 17, and Puhakka 10. Needless to say, it’s going to be a thrilling battle here in Spain.

KZ2 - ROUND 1

In the opening round of the KZ2 Europeans in Sarno, the results of Friday and Saturday action seemed to forecast an “all-green” ending. Instead, by Sunday night, Tony Kart “only” secured the top step of the podium with official driver Andreas Fasberg, joined in second and third place by the CRG “all-black” duo of Pedro Hiltbrand and Felice Tiene (both with Maxter engine). So what happened in between? Among the fastest all weekend, after the prefinal Fasberg made the best of his teammate Luca Corberi’s debacle. In the prefinal Corberi crossed the finish-line first, but was then assigned a 5 second “jump start” penalty and saw his win go to runner-up Alberto Cavalieri (Righetti Ridolfi/Modena Engines). Based on the speed Corberi had shown the whole weekend, everyone was expecting him to get back in control. Instead, in the Final, he saw his attempts at rising hindered precisely by Cavalieri, who quickly lost speed on his used tires. The race came to an end early on for both drivers, when they made contact. This said, Fasberg jumped into the lead from third off grid and never looked back, doing a simply super race, without a single mistake. Pedro Hiltbrand (CRG/

10

Maxter) also ran a perfect race, completely overturning a weekend that had opened with a 47th placement in the qualifyings. Excellent lap times in the heats had already shown his potential, but such an astonishing final was simply unpredictable: Hiltbrand started from 13th and, one fast pass after the next, caught up to Fasberg, hounding him for the lead. In the closing laps he even made it look like he’d be able to overtake. In the end, he had to “settle” for placing second ahead of CRG teammates Felice Tiene and Fabian Federer, fourth below the podium after battling for the win in the first half of the race. Following from fifth to seventh, the names on the results chart are those of weekend front runners Marijn Kremers (Birel Art/ Parilla), Maik Siebecke (CRG/Modena Engines), and Paolo Besancenez (Tony Kart/Vortex). Finally, a note of mention goes to the following hard-chargers of the Final: Federico Pezzolla (PCR/TM Racing), 8th after a 20 position climb, Luca Tilloca (Intrepid/Modena Engines), from 23rd to 10th, Tom Josef Lorkowski (Righetti Ridolfi/Modena Engines), from 27th to 11th, and Luigi Musio (Parolin/TM Racing), 17 positions up to close 14th.

ACADEMY TROPHY

FROM EVERY NATION the CiK-FiA Karting Academy trophy was created to promote young talents from all over the world, by offering them opportunity to battle on even ground (with identical engine, chassis, and tires), alongside the world’s best karters on the most prestigious raceways!

The entry list of the 2015 CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy features 51 names: 50 race talents nominated by their respective national motorsport federations plus one girl ace selected by the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission. Aimed at offering top level competition at reduced costs and with equal opportunities, the Trophy has everyone running on identical material: Parolin chassis fitted with FIM (KF3) engines to be allotted by random swaps and Bridgestone Option tires. In addition, all drivers and teams work under identical 4.5 by 3 meter tents. The Trophy is open to drivers born between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2002 who hold a valid International C Junior license, provided they have never ranked in the Top 15 of a previous CIK-FIA championship in a Junior category (CIK-FIA KFJ World and/or European Championships).

12

The 2015 edition runs on 3 rounds, as always, each of which comprises Free Practice, Qualifying Practice, Qualifying Heats, the Second Chance Heat, and the final phase inclusive of Pre-Final and Final. For the first meeting of the season here in Zuera, drivers are allowed to use three complete sets of tires: two for free practice and one from qualifying until the finals. In the other two rounds, drivers will be allowed to use two new sets and a used one, employing them as follows: the used set and one of the new sets for free practice and the other new set from qualifying until the finals. The three rounds of the 2015 CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy take place alongside the CIK-FIA European and World Championships for the KZ: after the opener in Zuera (which includes a pre-event training day), the action will move to Genk, Belgium on July 10-12 and Le Mans, France on September 11-13.
