CIK-FIA European Championship / Academy Trophy 2014 | Wackersdorf

Page 1

EDITORIAL Charge ahead! This is the imperative mandate of the European Championships that here in Wackersdorf dedicate the stage exclusively to shifter karts. After the Genk premiere, where KZ and KZ2 shared the track with the KF, the two classes will be alone, front and center, in the hunt for the European title. This is going to be a “delicate match, since it is the second of the three events that will elect the final winner. Alone in the European, but not on track - in fact, the grand spectacle of the KZ and KZ2 will be supported, once more, by the CIK-FIA Academy Trophy, dedicated to the youngest drivers, here at their second round. Offering the little ones a chance to race alongside the big stars of karting is a way to encourage their dream to, one day, join the halls of fame. So, charge ahead! Marco Ardigò (Tony Kart/Vortex - Tony Kart Racing Team)

The king of the opening round of the KZ European Championship was Marco Ardigò (Tony Kart/Vortex), but it was no walk in the park. On Friday, Arnaud Kozlinski (Intrepid/TM) grabbed pole position. The second best time was set by Jonathan Thonon (Praga/Parilla), who did the fast lap of group 2, and the third fastest was Paolo De Conto (Birel/TM), followed by Jorrit Pex (CRG/TM) and Anthony Abbasse (Sodi/TM). As evidence of how competitive the field is, the gap between the pole man and the Frenchman sitting 5th was of only 0.092. At the end of the day Ardigò (Tony Kart/Vortex) was only 7th overall, behind his teammate Flavio Camponeschi. On Saturday, “Koko” consolidated his leadership, conquering a top-spot start for the prefinal, by winning heat 1 and placing 4th in heat 2. The other front row spot for the start of the prefinal went to a fast-charging Rick Dreezen (Zanardi/Parilla), while Ardigò and Thonon secured a row 2 start, giving everyone the impression that the battle on Sunday would be anything but boring. The heats, instead, spelled bad luck for De Conto and Camponeschi, both forced to withdraw for a break down

in one of the two races. Then came Finals Sunday and the tables turned in favor of Ardigò. After an exhilarating battle in the prefinal, the Tony Kart driver was standing first, followed by Thonon, who also scored the best lap, and Kozlinski. The dice had been cast, so to speak. In fact, in the final the Italian completed his great weekend with authority, starting from first place and driving off to an undiscussed victory. For sure he was helped by the fact that the great duel with Jonathan Thonon (Praga/Parilla) did not happen. And the reason is that the Belgian was rear ended and sent off track, right as he was pressing to find an opening for the lead, by “Koko”, who was, in turn, trying to fend off an attack by De Conto. When all was said and done, Thonon had the worst of the whole incident in the short-term, considering he had to restart his engine to get back on track. Yet, things turned much more sour for the other two later in the race. Kozlinksi slipped down past 20th place, then was victim to a “lethal” contact that forced him to withdraw - and to think he had been the man to beat until the prefinal! Instead, De Conto had to leave the race because

his engine failed, right as he was running third on a hardcharging rise from eighth. The final ended with Ardigò as the winner, followed by Dreezen (Zanardi/Parilla), who ran second from start to finish. The third one across the finish was Jordon Lennox-Lamb (CRG/Maxter), who took advantage of De Conto’s withdrawal to complete the podium and give a good ending to an up and down weekend (10th in the qualifyings, 5th after the heats, 8th in the prefinal). Jorrit Pex (CRG/TM) and Ben Hanley (ART GP/TM) rounded off the top 5, also putting a nice ending to a weekend on the rise. The same goes fro the rest of the Top 10: Mirko Torsellini (ART GP/TM), Anthony Abbasse (Sodi/TM), Bas Lammers (Formula K/Parilla), Massimo Aceto (Righetti/ Parilla) and Simo Puhakka (Birel/TM). A final note of mention goes to the “paradox” of Yannick De Brabander (CRG/TM): the last one across the finishline, 1 lap slower than the winner, but author of the best lap of the race. The Belgian didn’t seem to be a local driver on his home turf until he placed the final pounce that had him clock out like no other (53.020).

ACADEMY TROPHY REPORT The CIK-FIA single-brand series has a noble goal: to attract young talents into international karting from a very young age. Based on the Genk debut, it seems the mission will be once again accomplished in 2014.

The 2014 CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy shows a welcome revival of the single-brand/equal-opportunity formula launched in 2010. The appeal of the concept was confirmed by the great success of the opening round: a total of 49 drivers from 29 countries and 4 continents met up in Genk, including some with prior international experience and, more importantly, a great wealth of absolute newcomers to the series from countries that are usually not represented in karting (like South Korea, Iran, Israel and Lebanon). Moving on to the action, Richard Verschoor clocked out with the best time, followed by Ross Martin and

Murilo Della Coletta. Verschoor went on to confirm his leadership in the heats, followed by compatriot Rinus Van Kalmthout and Berkay Besler. Then the tables turned in the prefinal, with Besler winning ahead of Oliver York and Bradley Lienbenberg, and again in the final, where Kakunoshin Ota quickly moved to the front and flew off to win. Van Kalmthout managed to rise back up to 2nd and Martin charged up from 16th to round off the podium. Overall, half of the Top 10 drivers, including the winner, were at their international debut and together they represented 9 different national flags from Asia, Europe and South America. KF ROUND KZ2 ROUND2 1REPORT REPORT

The KZ2 European Championship opened with a surprise start-to-finish domination by “private” driver Andrea Dalè (CRG/Maxter): pole position, 1st in each of his 4 heats, and 1st at the finish-line of both prefinal and final, here with a stunning 5.8 seconds advantage. True, since the start of the season the Italian had already given proof of his skills and, not perchance, a few months ago his name had gravitated towards Energy Corse. Yet, nobody expected him to dominate the first major event of the season! Behind Dalè in the combined standings of the qualifyings there were Marijim Kremers (Birel/TM), the fastest of group 3, and Andreas Sebastian Hansen (Tony Kart/ Vortex), the best of group 2. The fact that Friday’s top 3 were the leaders of the 3 timed practice groups was an immediate sign of the balanced nature of the field. And a balanced field often results in serious “shuffling” in the charts, as happened across the Genk weekend. On Saturday, the one who secured a front row start for the prefinal next to Dalè was Jan Midrla (Birel/TM), already 4th on Friday. Instead, Hansen “only” managed to place 4th behind his Scandinavian conational Douglas

10

Lundberg (Alpha/Parilla) and poor Kremers dropped to 15th. On the other hand, all the other drivers completing the Top 10 were authors of great rebounds from poor qualifying results: the Energy duo of Simas Juodvirsis (with Maxter engine) and Ricardo Romkema (with TM engine) claimed 5th and 6th, on the rise from 14th and 13th respectively; Italian Matteo Zanchi (GP/TM) and Guust Specken (Intrepid/TM) claimed row 4, climbing from 17th and 15th; Simone Brenna (TB Kart/Modena Engines) rose from 23rd to 9th and Finn Kooijman (CRG/ TM) went from 20th to 10th. The absolute biggest climb was by Menno Paauwe (Birel/TM): up 20 spots and 13th going into Sunday. The prefinals confirmed the same names up front, except for two surprising “seat” changes. The Top 5 list on Sunday morning was Dalè, Midrla, Lundberg, Hannsen and Juodvirsis. After both of the prefinals were accounted for, the charts had Dalè and Midrla still sitting 1-2, Hanssen steady in 4th, and Lundberg down to 5th, losing “his” 3rd place to an amazing Kremers, who managed to push his Birel kart up 12 spots by taking a phenomenal second place finish in his prefinal (PF1).

Juodvirsis, instead, dropped to 29th (he closed his prefinal in 15th place, due to a clash with Lundberg). Like the former European champion, other big names also got filtered out in the prefinals, including Matteo Zanchi, Gary Carlton, and Luca Corberi (who had already dropped from 6th to 21st in the heats). The tables turned once more at start of the final, except for Dalè who flew off undisturbed. Midrla failed to get off grid and slid to the rear and towards the end of lap one Ryan Van Der Burgt (DR/TM) and Kremers also went out. While havoc ensued, Lundberg managed to rise up to second and keep Dalè in view. Then at lap 11 he started to slide back, while the trio of Finn Koijman (CRG/TM), Hansen (Tony Kart/Vortex) and Fabian Federer (CRG/Maxter) worked their way up. At the finish Hansen and Federer claimed 2nd and 3rd. A closing mention also goes to Energy official Juodvirsis, who made up for a weekend that seemed compromised beyond repair: in the final he does the race of his life, checking off 24 rivals and claiming a 5th place across the finish-line that tasted (almost) as sweet as victory.
