Early Work: Frederick took advantage of an uneven first three innings from Winston’s pitching and defense to score five times and held on to win 5-4 last night at BB&T Ballpark. The win clinched the first half Northern Division title for the Keys, who will host the second half champion to begin the playoffs in September. Frederick used two singles and an error to score a run in the first, scored two runs in the second on a wild pitch and a delayed double steal, and two in the third on a Miguel Abreu RBI single and a failed pickoff turned successful double steal. The Dash clawed their way back into the contest late thanks to three RBI from Andy Wilkins, but left the tying run at second base in the ninth as Keys closer Sean Gleason shut the door with a strikeout of Tyler Saladino to end it. The loss was Winston’s fifth in six games, dropping the team to 2-6 against Frederick this season. End of an Era: Last night’s loss officially eliminated Winston-Salem from first half playoff contention, as the team’s elimination number reached zero. The Dash who have been to the playoffs in each of the three previous seasons, will have to win the second half or finish second only to the first half winner to make the playoffs in 2011 and make it four straight trips to the postseason. Winston-Salem entered this season having finished with at least a share of first place in the Southern Division in each of the last four halves; that streak has ended in the first half of this season. The last time Winston was eliminated from playoff contention in a half was in the first half of the 2008 season. The team later qualified for the playoffs after finishing in second place to first half champ Myrtle Beach in the second half of the season. I’m missing you like Andy: Despite the loss, Dash first baseman Andy Wilkins can say he had a very good day. In the afternoon, he was informed that he had made the Carolina League All-Star Team after two players could no longer participate, making it the second consecutive season that Wilkins has been an All-Star; he made the postseason All-Star Team in the Pioneer League with Great Falls in his rookie year. Wilkins’ good day continued during last night’s game, when he went 2 for 4 with an RBI infield single and a two-run homer that got the Dash to within a run of the Keys. The home run was his first since May 27 and ended a 55-at bat homerless drought. Austin City Limits: Austin Yount continued his strong stretch of offensive play Sunday night, going 2 for 3 with a walk and a run scored in the Dash’s win. He has now picked up a hit in five of his last six games, with three of those games being multi-hit efforts. He is batting .421 (8 for 19) since May 31 to raise his season batting average from .176 to .215, a jump of 39 points. Yesterday, Yount picked up his second and third hits against left-handed pitching this season. He had entered the game 1 for 27 against lefties and had not received an at bat against a southpaw in over two weeks. Yount’s only other hit against a left came on April 21 against Wilmington’s Justin Marks. Sierra Mist: Luis Sierra continues to hit well in his return to the Carolina League. He went 1 for 4 with a double last night and since returning from a three-game stint with AA Birmingham he is 5 for 11 at the plate with two doubles, one RBI, and two runs scored while playing a steady second and third base. His two two-hit games this weekend were the Colombian’s first since May 15. Tour de Bour: Dash catcher Jason Bour cleared the goose egg from the home run column on his stat line Sunday night, blasting a parabolic homer on a hanging Jake Odorizzi curveball in the third inning to make it a 7-0 Winston lead. With Bour’s homer, every current Dash position player except Mike Blanke has now gone deep in 2011. It was the first home run for Bour since August 25, 2010 at Lynchburg, a span of 124 homerless at bats. BallWINger: Mark down a “W” for the Dash when J.R. Ballinger comes into a game for Winston-Salem. The Mississippian got the win Sunday for the Dash to improve to 4-0 in the Carolina League. In all four of Ballinger’s appearances for Winston, he has picked up the victory. Today’s Opposing Starter: Tonight RHP Oliver Drake (4-3, 2.84) makes his tenth start of the season for the Keys and his second against the Dash. In two games (one start) against Winston-Salem, he has been very good, allowing two runs on five hits in 12.2 innings with 11 strikeouts and one walk. In his start against the Dash on May 3, he finished his outing by retiring the final 22 batters he faced. Drake made a start against Salem early in the year before receiving a promotion to AA Bowie, where he was hammered in two starts (4 IP, 10 H, 11 R, 6 BB). Last year against the Dash, Drake was 2-0 in 4 starts with a 3.86 ERA and 26K/7BB in 25.2 innings. Overall last year with the Keys, he was 6-6 with a 4.36 ERA in 24 games (21 starts). Drake hails from Gardner, MA and was drafted by Baltimore in the 43rd round in 2008 out of the Naval Academy. In his first full professional season in 2009, he went 8-9 with a 4.34 ERA in 25 games (24 GS) with low-A Delmarva. He tied for the Shorebirds’ leader in wins and was second on the club in strikeouts (104). Drake had a successful professional debut in 2008, going 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA in 12 relief appearances between Aberdeen and Delmarva. He was just the fourth player in Navy history to be selected in the First-Year Player Draft, but left the academy before he had to honor his five-year military commitment. He signed with the Orioles for $100,000 after going 6-3 and leading the Patriot League with 78 strikeouts in 2008. He initially attracted Baltimore’s attention while playing for the Maryland Orioles in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League. Pitching under Baltimore scout and Maryland Orioles manager Dean Albany, he posted a 1.00 ERA and a 17-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in five starts. He attended high school at Northfield Mount Hermon (Gill, MA) and was a First-Team All-Central New England Prep School League selection as a junior and senior. He throws an 89-93 mph fastball, a slider, and a changeup.
