This is IU East Indiana University East grew out of an extension established at Earlham College that was operated by Earlham and Indiana University. In 1967, the arrangement was expanded to include Purdue and Ball State universities and the extension became the Eastern Indiana Center of Earlham College. In 1969, reflecting the community’s response to this opportunity to take state university courses at home, Richmond citizens formed an association known as Eastern Indiana Community College, Inc., to raise funds for the construction of a new campus. Following a successful campaign in which they raised over $1 million, members of the community college organization, with the consent of the four education institutions involved in the center, requested Indiana University to establish a regional campus in Richmond to assume responsibility for the operation. The Indiana General Assembly approved this plan, and on July 1, 1971, the Eastern Indiana Center for Earlham College became Indiana University East, the sixth campus in the Indiana University regional system. On October 3, 1972, ground was broken at the new campus site north of Richmond. The first building, an all-purpose academic facility named Whitewater Hall, was completed in late 1974 and dedicated February 23, 1975. Ground was broken for a new library/classroom building on August 8, 1990. It was dedicated as the Brice E. Hayes Hall on June 12, 1992. The third classroom building on the IU East campus was completed in May 1995. The building, which was dedicated as Middlefork Hall on June 12, 1996, houses the fine arts program and classrooms and

laboratories for the School of Education and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2009, the building was renamed Tom Raper Hall in recognition of the largest gift in IU East’s history. The fourth building, dedicated as Springwood Hall in November 1999, houses the Graf Recreation Center, University College, the Chancellor’s and Campus Life offices, as well as general and specialty classrooms. Additionally, the IU East Henry County Danielson Learning Center was dedicated in May 1999 to serve the citizens of Henry County. IU

Season Preview The Establishment: IU East seeks winning ways in 2012 The Red Wolves men’s tennis team hopes to join The Establishment during the program’s second season.

Derengowski tied for the team lead in singles wins in the 2011 spring season. Judd tied for the team lead in wins during the short 2011 fall season.

Indiana University East men’s tennis coach Erskine Ratchford says “establishing ourselves and methods of winning” are the key themes to the Red Wolves’ second NAIA season, which opens March 2 with at match at Saint Joseph’s College.

Redshirt sophomore Nick Frank got a full season of college-level practices as a redshirt in 2011 and is ready to contribute in 2012.

IU East managed a three-win season with an oftenshorthanded roster during the program’s inaugural year in 2011. The Red Wolves now how boast an 11-man roster and matched the win total from 2011 during a short fall season. IU East hopes to establish something bigger and better in 2012. “As a young team, this season’s results will depend on how quickly we develop as a team and as players,” Ratchford said.

Freshman lefty Ty Butler (Wadesville, Ind./North Posey High School) played at the top of the lineup during the fall season. Freshmen Derek Blank (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan High School) and Jake Welsh (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan High School) were teammates for a successful high school program and bring their winning ways to IU East. Both could play in the middle-to-upper portions of the IU East lineup. Three more freshmen were high school teammates - Brian Luke (Connersville, Ind./Connersville High School), Josh Lone (Connersville, Ind./Connersville High School) and Zach Smith (Connersville, Ind./ Connersville High School). Luke and Lone were the top two singles players for their high school team. Smith is a doubles ace.

The roster Three players established themselves during IU East’s inaugural season. They are joined by an eight-player Fellow freshmen Zeth Ellis (Richmond, Ind./Northrecruiting class. eastern High School) and Johnny Gray (Elkhart, Ind./ Jimtown High School) will redshirt this season. Redshirt sophomore Adam Derengowski (Richmond, Ind./Richmond High School) and sophomore Justin “All of the players are capable of hitting with and Judd (West Milton, Ohio/Milton-Union High School) handling power and aggressively playing the ball gained valuable experience playing at the top of the around the court,” Ratchford said. “We are fairly IU East lineup in 2011.

He led the IU East women’s tennis program to a 12-win improvement during the 2011 fall season, the biggest turnaround in the state among programs that play their main season in the fall. “The only thing that could make this news better is if we could also let Erskine play in our lineup, because he is that good of a player” said IU East assistant athletic director Kyle Wright.

“He developed a strong rapport with our players last season and is the perfect person to push our teams to a level of contending for conference championships and national tournament appearances on a regular basis.” Ratchford is a North Carolina State University alumni. He previously was Director of Engineering for Marvel Industries in Richmond. “IU East and east central Indiana can be a hotbed for tennis because of its location between several strong tennis communities,” Ratchford said, noting IU East’s proximity to cities like Dayton, Indianapolis and Cincinnati. “Players who come to IU East have a great opportunity to take advantage of the resources that are available to tennis players in this area.”
