What is the First Generation Programme? The First Generation Programme is a support programme run by Worthing College for students who might be considering university in the future. It is intended to help students who come from a background which does not traditionally have high rates of progression to university. The scheme is run by Worthing College together with our partner universities. Joining the scheme entitles your son or daughter to extra support, including trips, guaranteed offers, interviews and financial support.

Who is eligible to join?

The programme is aimed at students who come from a background which does not traditionally have high rates of progression to university. For example: • Neither parent has attended university in the UK or abroad. • They are a young carer or have been a looked after young person. • They have a disability or specific learning difficulty, such as dyslexia. • They live in a ‘Low Participation’ neighbourhood as defined by postcode. In other words, the criteria are very broad and a large proportion of students at Worthing College are eligible to join the programme.

What are the benefits of joining the programme? Guaranteed offers • The local universities we’ve partnered with provide students with guaranteed offers in the majority of courses, if they gain the course entry requirements.

Bursaries • Universities will provide substantial bursaries to some students, subject to meeting certain requirements. For example, students with low family incomes can receive annual bursaries up to £1000 a year. • There are also opportunities for students to take up employment with the universities alongside their studies, such as working as a student ambassador. Enrichment Opportunities • Taster Days at local universities in a wide range of subjects. • Workshops, lectures and master classes. University staff frequently visit the college to deliver lectures and presentations to specific subject areas. • Summer Schools. These are fantastic opportunities to spend a week at university over the summer holiday, living in halls, studying a particular subject, meeting new friends and experiencing the reality of university life. • Campus tours. • Support with the university application process.

Highlights from last year: Here are just a few of the events which First Generation Students took part in last academic year. • Architecture, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Forensics and Maths Taster Days • Sports Business Masterclass at Brighton University • Learn to Teach conference at Brighton University • Summer Schools at the universities of Brighton, Sussex and Plymouth • University for Young Carers and Care Leavers residential in Winchester

First Generation visit to University of Sussex

One student’s experience: Lily spent 5 days at the Sussex Study Experience, a summer school with Sussex University. She stayed for 4 nights in a hall of residence alongside other First Generation students, ate her meals in the restaurants across the campus and took advantage of the fantastic social life on offer. During the days she undertook academic work on her chosen subject, experiencing lectures, seminars and research in the university library. The week ended with a celebratory presentation ceremony attended by family and friends. This is what she had to say about her experience: “I would just like to say thanks for the opportunity to go on Sussex Uni Summer School. It was the best 5 days:-) Made so many new friends, and have my heart set on studying Law at Sussex. It was an amazing experience.”
