In doing so, he helped forge a unique approach to technological higher education, one where students would put the theory they learned in the classroom into practice through practical, hands-on experiences. merging theory and practice, WPI’s pioneering idea, was captured in its german motto, Lehr und Kunst, or learning and skilled art, and in the towers of its first two buildings.

The Two Towers are symbolic of the duality at the heart of WPI’s approach to learning. The clock tower of Boynton Hall, where students originally attended classes, stands for Theory; the tower of the Shops, with its weathervane in the shape of an arm holding a blacksmith’s hammer, connotes Practice.

In WPI’S 150TH year, ITS 147TH graDUaTIOn WPI opened its doors in november 1868, and graduated its first class three and a half years later. The first Commencement was held in the chapel on the third floor of Boynton Hall. The venue has changed several times as the graduating classes grew and has included Worcester's mechanics Hall and WPI’s Harrington auditorium. Commencement has been held outdoors, weather permitting, since 1989. Today, with classes routinely topping 1,000, the Quad is the only campus location large enough to hold graduates and their families. WPI’s first president, Charles O. Thompson, was the inaugural Commencement speaker. Since then, students have heard from industry leaders, scientists, explorers (including robert Ballard, who located the Titanic), inventors (among them Dean Kamen ’74), two future U.S. presidents (Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Delano roosevelt), and one World Series-winning pitcher (Curt Schilling). Bernard Harris, this year’s speaker, is the third astronaut to address our graduates.

CHaIrman’S PrIze reCIPIenT KaTHI FISLer Currently, her principal scholarly interest is computing education. She is co-director of Bootstrap, a project that teaches students ages 12 to 16 algebraic and geometric concepts through computer programming. Having engaged thousands of students nationwide, the program was adopted in 2014 as the middle-school math curriculum by Code.org, an organization working to bring computing education to all K–12 schools. It has also been adopted by CSnyC and massCan, regional organizations fostering K–12 computing education. Fisler’s expertise in computer science education has brought her to the attention of organizations seeking to strengthen computer education at all levels. as a member of the SIgPLan education Board, she helped design the programming language component of new undergraduate computer science curriculum guidelines developed by the association for Computing machinery. and she was appointed to the massachusetts Digital Literacy and Computer Science Standards Panel, which is charged with determining how to integrate computer science into the state’s K–12 technology literacy standards. an esteemed educator, Fisler has also spearheaded curricular innovations at WPI. She helped revamp the first year and sophomore computer science curriculum. Her work on the new curriculum and on an innovative course she developed in programming language concepts won her the 2004 romeo moruzzi young Faculty award for Innovation in Undergraduate education. She also led an effort to expand the Computer Science Department’s accreditation review to a broad-based process that would focus on its graduate as well as its undergraduate program. For her pioneering research in the human aspects of computer science and computer security, her innovative efforts to help students at all levels more effectively learn computing skills and mathematics, and her service to her profession, her university, and society, WPI is proud to confer upon Kathi Fisler the 2015 Chairman’s exemplary Faculty Prize.

as a computer scientist, Kathi Fisler devotes much of her groundbreaking scholarship not to the machines that have transformed our world over the past half century, but to the problems that stem from how human users understand—or fail to understand—them. Fisler earned a Ba in computer science and asian studies at Williams College and an mS and a PhD in computer science at Indiana University. While pursuing her doctorate, she was a member of the technical staffs at aT&T Bell Laboratories and Lucent Technologies. She was a postdoctoral research associate and lecturer at rice University before joining WPI in 2000 as an assistant professor; she was promoted to full professor in 2014. In 2001 she won a national Science Foundation Career award for research on computer-aided verification. The work fell within the larger realm of formal methods, which builds mathematical models of software and hardware systems to identify design flaws. Fisler has also applied formal methods to the development of tools to address human factors that can undermine efforts to keep computer systems secure. Though it was not her area of expertise, Fisler recognized the importance of teaching software security to computer science undergraduates. She led the charge to add the subject to the curriculum, even immersing herself in the field so she could develop and teach the first course. That was a stepping stone toward deepening WPI’s cybersecurity offerings, which led, in turn, to recognition for WPI as a national Security administration/Department of Homeland Security Center of excellence in Information assurance research. Fisler was the driving force behind the launch of WPI’s cross-disciplinary cybersecurity program, with graduate programs that touch on the human and organizational contexts of security, and is the principal investigator for a $4.4 million nSF award through the Scholarship for Service program that will help the university fill a critical need for cybersecurity experts to work in government.

The Chairman’s exemplary Faculty Prize was established in 2007 through the personal philanthropy of Donald K. Peterson ’71, former chair of the WPI Board of Trustees. Current Board Chair Philip B. ryan ’65 is proud to continue the tradition established by mr. Peterson.

HOnOrary Degree reCIPIenT eLLen S. DUnLaP DOCTOr OF HUmane LeTTerS programming. a host of programs have helped K-12 teachers deepen their understanding of american history and literature and strengthen their pedagogical skills. The society has also brought facsimiles of its collections into area classrooms, providing new generations the chance to come face-to-face with history. But even as the society’s impact has broadened, it has vigorously maintained its core mission of making a world-class research collection with a dedicated staff available to academic scholars (including many from WPI). Through the experiences of visitors of all ages, and the publications and teachings of its fellows and visiting scholars, the american antiquarian Society has had a profound impact on the way U.S. citizens of all ages understand their past. Prior to leading the society, Dunlap was director of the rosenbach museum and Library in Philadelphia and research librarian at what is now the Harry ransom Center at the University of Texas, austin, where she earned both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s in library science. She has served as chair of massHumanities; the Independent research Libraries association; and the archives, manuscripts, and Special Collections program of the research Libraries group. Under Dunlap's leadership, the society has become a vital force in the Worcester community and a key player in the cultural and economic revitalization of the region. She has chaired the Worcester Cultural Coalition, where she continues as a member of the executive committee, and has served as a member of the board of the greater Worcester Community Foundation. Like the staff she oversees, Dunlap exudes a great love for the american antiquarian Society and its mission. “everybody here believes that what we’re doing is bigger than any one of us,” she has said. “Collecting, preserving, and making available this extraordinary material has been our collective honor.” For her leadership of a great Worcester institution, her vital role in helping preserve the american past, and her passion for sharing that past with present and future generations, it is WPI’s honor to confer on ellen S. Dunlap the Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa.

In the summer, of 2014, ellen Dunlap traveled to the White House for the presentation of the national Humanities medal, the nation’s highest honor for excellence in that field. She accepted the award on behalf of the american antiquarian Society, the institution she has led for the past 23 years. Visibly moved, Dunlap stood shoulder to shoulder with President Barack Obama as the society was lauded “for safeguarding the american story.” The official citation read, “Through more than two centuries, the society has amassed an unparalleled collection of historic american documents, served as a research center to scholars and students alike, and connected generations of americans to their cultural heritage.” a national treasure, the american antiquarian Society has long been a jewel of Worcester, as well. It was founded here in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a great patriot who made his fortune in the city in the early years of the republic, rising from childhood poverty to become the leading printer and publisher of his generation. Today the society is the largest and most accessible library of its kind, preserving more than four million items that document the history of the United States through 1876. The collection includes about 60 percent of the books printed in the United States prior to 1820. among its most prized holdings are the first book printed in america (the Bay Psalm Book, printed in Cambridge in 1640), the first Bible printed in British north america (printed in 1663 in the language of the algonquians), and the only surviving copy of the first american edition of Samuel richardson's Pamela (printed in Philadelphia by Benjamin Franklin). The library also holds more than two million newspapers and 1,500 manuscript collections, along with prints, broadsides, sheet music, and printed ephemera of every sort. Standing at the helm for nearly a quarter century, Dunlap has helped bring the american antiquarian Society into the modern age. Under her visionary and energetic leadership, it has advanced on several important fronts: increasing its visibility; raising significant funding for acquisitions, fellowships, curating, and outreach; providing greater accessibility through digital initiatives; and expanding public 9

Other long-term clients include the University of Virginia, Princeton University, Harvard University, and mIT. Over the course of her 23-year tenure as a trustee, nitsch brought her experience, expertise, and financial resources to bear on the evolution of the WPI campus. as chair of the Facilities and Campus Infrastructure Committee for 16 years, she was an early champion of energy-efficient buildings at WPI, pushing for LeeD certification well before it was commonly understood or appreciated. Today, evidence abounds of nitsch’s leadership and great love for WPI. In recognition of the generosity of nitsch and her late husband, Tony magliozzi, WPI was proud to name the entrance to the Sports and recreation Center and the green roof atop the east Hall residence in their honor. nitsch is a registered Professional engineer in 23 states, a member of the Urban Land Institute Boston advisory Board, a trustee of eastern Bank, and a member of the board of the greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, where she serves as co-chair of its real estate Development Committee. She received an honorary doctor of science degree from massachusetts maritime academy in 2010. For her pioneering spirit, unparalleled contributions to women in engineering, and unwavering dedication to her profession and to her alma mater, WPI is honored to confer upon Judith nitsch the Degree of Doctor of engineering, Honoris Causa.

elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States, once observed, “It is not easy to be a pioneer—but oh, it is fascinating!” For Judith nitsch, a pioneer at WPI and in the field of civil engineering, life has indeed been filled with fascinating experiences. There was her first job interview after graduating from WPI in 1975, when a prospective employer doubted whether she could handle a chainsaw or work with men at a job site. There were the first eight years of her career, when she was the only woman engineer at her workplace. There was the 1989 launch of her own firm, nitsch engineering, now the largest Women-Owned Business enterprise civil engineering firm in massachusetts. and there was the making of WPI history that same year, when she became the first alumna ever elected to the university’s Board of Trustees. It may not be easy to be a pioneer, but throughout her career nitsch has continually broken new ground and paved the way for others. In addition to being WPI's first female trustee, she was also the youngest person ever to join the board. and she was the first woman president of both the Boston Society of Civil engineers Section of the american Society of Civil engineers (the oldest engineering society in the United States) and the american Council of engineering Companies of massachusetts. as president of the Commercial real estate Women network, she has sought to share the lessons of leadership, recently hosting a conversation with former Secretary of State Hillary rodham Clinton on the benefit of taking risks. and because of her experiences as a young engineer, she has remained a tireless advocate of professional networking for women in the field. This has included a large number of WPI students, as nitsch has been an active participant in the trustee/student mentor program since its inception. as founding principal and chair, nitsch has led the impressive growth and success of nitsch engineering, which has worked on projects in 18 states and five countries and is listed among the Boston Business Journal’s top 25 engineering firms in massachusetts. In 1994 he launched the Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp, which offers middle school students from historically underserved communities an exciting two-week residential experience filled with opportunities to pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering, and math. WPI hosted its first Summer Science Camp in 2009; as part of this year’s camp, 48 students from Central massachusetts will participate in the mars Lander Challenge, a space-themed competition inspired by Harris’s career. With major support from the exxonmobil Foundation, which has sponsored the camp since 2006, the Harris Foundation now offers 20 such camps nationwide. In addition to his space career and philanthropic work, Harris has led several successful business endeavors. He currently serves as chief executive officer and managing partner of Vesalius Ventures Inc., a venture capital firm that invests in early- to mid-stage healthcare technologies and companies. He also holds several faculty appointments, including associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas medical Branch, assistant professor at the Baylor College of medicine, and adjunct professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health. a fellow of the american College of Physicians, he is the author or coauthor of numerous scientific publications. among the many awards Harris has received are the naSa Space Flight medal, several honorary doctorates, and the Horatio alger award, which is given to accomplished leaders who have overcome significant personal challenges to achieve success. an adventurer at heart, he is a licensed private pilot and certified scuba diver. astronaut, physician, professor, philanthropist, entrepreneur, mentor, and role model: for dreaming bold dreams, achieving them, and inspiring new generations of young people to do the same, WPI is honored to confer on Dr. Bernard a. Harris Jr. the degree of Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa.

In 1995, Dr. Bernard a. Harris Jr. boldly went where no african american had gone before. as payload commander on the space shuttle Discovery, he walked in space, providing the world below a thrilling example of courage and excellence. He also fulfilled a dream he'd held since childhood when he watched the apollo astronauts rocket into space and declared that, someday, he would do that, too. In fact, Bernard Harris did it twice, logging more than 438 hours in orbit and traveling more than 7.2 million miles. a self-described “dreamer who believes nothing is impossible,” Harris began his extraordinary journey in Texas, where he was born, and on the navajo Indian reservations in arizona and new mexico where his mother worked as a teacher. as a child, he loved to read science and science fiction books and was enchanted with the television show Star Trek. His favorite character? Leonard mcCoy, known as “Bones,” the first doctor he saw practicing medicine in space. Harris has said that “education and effort” are the keys to helping anyone meet any challenge—and his own life provides powerful evidence. after graduating from Sam Houston High School in San antonio, Texas, he attended the University of Houston, where he earned a bachelor of science in biology, and Texas Tech University School of medicine, where he earned a doctor of medicine degree. He also holds a master’s degree in biomedical science from the University of Texas medical Branch at galveston and an mBa from the University of Houston Clear Lake. after finishing his residency in internal medicine at the mayo Clinic, Harris completed a national research Council fellowship at naSa’s ames research Center. In 1990 he applied to naSa's astronaut Candidate Program. Out of 6,000 applicants, he was one of just 23 to make the cut. Harris spent the next 10 years at the Johnson Space Center, exploring the effects of space travel on the musculoskeletal system, conducting clinical studies of space adaptation, and developing in-flight medical devices to extend astronaut stays in space. Today he is helping new generations of young people reach for the stars as founder of the Harris Foundation, 11

Boynton Hall was one of the first buildings designed by noted architect Stephen earle and was constructed of granite obtained from local quarries. e building originally housed classrooms and labs, where students learned the theory of science and engineering; they applied that theory next door in the Washburn Shops. e towers of these two buildings now symbolize WPI’s unique philosophy of education, the merger of theory and practice.

For Tech. For good good old old Worces-ter Worces-ter Tech

Following his graduation in 1910, Willard Hedlund taught civil engineering at WPI until 1913. He later served the city of Worcester as superintendent of public buildings. Hedlund’s original version of the Alma Mater has seen a few changes over the years; these are the lyrics currently sung on the WPI campus. A second stanza often follows: as years roll on, and changes bring, To all things great and small We still will thee in rev’rance hold, We’ll greet thee, one and all In accents which no one will doubt, In terms so strong and bold The world will know thy worth to us Increases many fold. Then here’s to good old Worcester Tech, Come, fellows, join in our refrain Wave high the colors crimson and gray, For good old Worcester Tech
