Welcome..............................................................................2

As 2016 draws to a close we look back and reflect on a busy term where there have been many highlights and much to celebrate. As always, our students continue to shine with the Year 7 cohort settling in well and already forging strong friendships. With the GCSEs just around the corner, the Year 11s have their heads down and are galloping towards the finishing post. It’s not only academically where we are successful but also in the fields of sport, music and drama.

We had a section 8, ‘no announcement’ Ofsted visit in October where inspectors came to look at behaviour in the school. They reported that “leaders and managers have taken effective action to maintain the high standards of behaviour and attitudes” in School. They also commented on the “harmonious atmosphere” evident in School. To read the full report go to the School’s website.

We are thrilled that we have had approval from the DfE to open a girls’ school. We are still at the beginning of this journey but we will be working closely with the Education Funding Agency and Royal Greenwich to ensure this school opens without delay. We have been of the opinion for many years that the girls of Thamesmead deserve the same outstanding education as the boys. We will be holding information evenings during the spring term so please monitor the School’s website for further details.

Calling all parents and carers, at Woolwich Poly we are always interested to find out your views on how we are doing; your opinions are very important to us. Ofsted have developed a website where you are able to answer questions on the school, which allows us to shape our future priorities. We kindly ask that you spare a few minutes to complete the form found at the following website address: http://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk/

Finally, we would like to thank our dedicated staff and governors for their hard work and unrelentless focus on the students. Also, our parents and carers for their unwavering support, without this strong partnership the great things that we achieve would not be possible.

We hope you have a peaceful and restful break and look forward to the challenges of the new term.

Please contact the school office for more details.

YEAR 7

YEAR 8

The Year 7s have made a wonderful start to Woolwich Poly. They have taken part in a number of sporting events which include: football, rugby and athletics!

Year 8s will be going on an adventure trip to Kingswood April 24 - 26. A £45 deposit is needed to secure a place. £135 in total.

All the boys were invited to spend a day out at Wrotham. The day involved taking part in team building activities and was a great chance for everyone to get to know each other before the end of the first half-term.

We are raising money for ‘Oxfam Unwrapped’ and the boys have been very creative in organising football tournaments, bake sales and cinema events to raise money.

Parents were also invited into school to meet the Year 7 Pastoral team and find out more information about events taking place in the year.

So far we have raised £60 in just one week. Our target is to raise £250 by December 10th.

Students have taken part in a number of sporting events this term, these include: football, rugby and athletics. There have been a few wins which have pleased us all! Year 7’s are currently doing an amazing job raising money for the police Christmas Tree Project- a charity which provides Christmas gifts for disadvantaged children. The students have carried out a sponsored silence; a number of cake sales and have also had a Christmas extravaganza!

The year group has been doing really well and have doubled their number of achievements this year in comparison to last year. Our top achievers in the year group are: Biraj Pun with 80 achievement points Wole Okunnuga with 74 achievement points Aaron Mukisa-Gidds with 71 achievement points A big thank you to our year group ambassadors and monitors for setting up assembly hall and helping in the HOY room everyday. Zobaid, Saugat, William and Toby

YEAR 9 Year 9 have embarked on their KS4 journey and have settled smoothly into their option choice subjects. In October we had a very successful information evening to inform both students and parents of specific subject requirements and expectations. The parental attendance was really impressive with 90% of parents dropping in at some point throughout the evening to discuss their son’s pathway. The conversations were extremely positive and engaging. It was also great to see so many students making such an effort to ensure they were present with their parents trying to maximise their opportunities to achieve. On the sporting front the Year 9’s have had a wide range of opportunities to enrich their education. There have been a range of Rugby, Football and Handball events that have seen many boys participate but also seen the respective teams earn a number of successes. The cross country team also became Greenwich champions after a resounding victory over the other schools competing. There have been trips that have also been hugely successful. Seven boys were fortunate enough to be selected to attend an England Rugby match as a reward for their Rugby exploits. They went to watch an international friendly, England vs Fiji at Twickenham on the 13th November. The trip was well received by the boys and certainly enriched their knowledge of the wider environment. On Saturday 15th October, fifty Year 9 students attended the Charlton vs Coventry City game at the Valley Stadium. The tickets were given to the school to celebrate ‘Young People in Greenwich Day.’ Charlton produced some wonderful football, perhaps, their finest performance of the season to win 3 - 0. The event itself was enjoyable for most, but seeing such a dominant victory capped off a truly memorable day for all that attended.

ENGLISH NEWS

On Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th of November- 60 Year 10 boys took part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge. The boys spoke on a range of topics including homelessness; striving to achieve your best; the difficulties of immigrating; stereotyping; and ending racism. There was also a very interesting speech from Kevin Tran on KFC and it’s ability to bring kindness, forgiveness and compassion. It was brilliant to see a group of boys so engaged with the world around them, creating such clever and effective speeches for their audience. Here are some of the comments from students about the two days: “This is a very good experience for anyone wanting to increase their confidence. Every aspect of the workshop helped me with public speaking and how to build a good confidence within myself, and it helped me to want to speak up for what I believe in and what I want.” - Rajan Bahra “The training was very good and beneficial. The trainer was exceedingly passionate, thank you to my teachers for choosing me to take part.”- Taylor Bottone “I would like to say that because of the trainer, I feel as though i can make people feel inspired when i talk. Thank you, Auntie Ore.” - Pierre Eshun

Year 8 English Club: Monday 3pm Room 211

“Today was very phenomenal. I gained a lot of confidence and Auntie Ore was very enthusiastic and the whole day was brilliant.” - Ans Arshad “I feel that the training workshop was very good and I think that now I have more confidence in public speaking; I will be more comfortable talking to groups.” - Toby Smith The eight chosen speakers will be performing their speeches in an assembly in January. Four speakers will be chosen and will then perform their speeches in a regional competition on 23rd March 2017.

Book Watch Monday: 3.15- 4pm: Library

‘ I am very pleased to announce that 3 of the poems from the Busta Rhyme Poetry competition have been published by Young writers. The boys are now moving on to writing ghost stories in a bid to get published again. Come and be scared - Room 211 3pm on a Monday.’ - Ms. Small ‘I love coming to the club every week, it’s really fun to be creative and improve my writing skills.’ Year 8 Student.

Read a book and then watch the film! Open to all year groups! “The boys have been reading the BFG during book club. We will be finishing the book and watching the new film version before the end of the term! We have had a good start to the club and are looking forward to reading our next novel!” Ms. Oyeniyi

On the 21st of October, I took eight boys (Year 13 and Year 11) to central London to attend a day at Google Headquarters. It was a very successful day where the boys participated in lots of activities and impressed the organizers involved in running the course. Out of 13 schools that attended, our boys asked the most questions, won the most prizes and they brought back with them not only an impressive reputation, but also a clear idea of what a future in Computing might look like. I was proud to lead such well behaved group of young men. The feedback from the Google day organizer that Poly students attended “A couple of weeks ago I was so so impressed with your students, their level of engagement and enthusiasm, their keen asking of questions.”

COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS VISIT GOOGLE HEADQUARTERS

Simi Adeshina’s Statement on his visit to Google Headquarters: “This October, a few students from the A-level and GCSE computer science classes went to visit the Google Headquarters in London. Whilst there, we were given expert employability advice from recruiters currently working at Google to find the best heads worldwide to join their ever-expanding team. We also got to have an insightful Q&A session with a Londonbased YouTuber who posts music covers to the site weekly. In addition to this, we were introduced to the basics of programming by solving coding puzzles and even got to speak with employees working in different departments at Google to ask them about their careers. Visiting Google HQ was a very engaging and eye-opening experience that I would whole-heartedly recommend to anyone who is fortunate enough to get the chance!”

ANTI-BULLY WEEK The Poly is Proud to stand up to Bullying Through Anti-Bully Week 2016 (14-18 November), staff and students of Woolwich Poly took a number of steps to raise awareness and show solidarity against Bullies. Of course every day is an anti-Bully day but to celebrate the nationwide awareness week the school took part in a number of schemes to do our bit. A poster campaign run by the student council hit the corridors to beat the bullies. The ‘Poly and Proud #StandUpToBullying’ bands were adorned by students and staff to show togetherness. Furthermore, Year 10 students Abdul Rahman Jacob (10W1) and Muhammad Barnett (10T2) put together a video showing staff and students Standing Up to Bullying that is displayed on the TVs around the school. Form activities to discuss the topics such as ‘Why do bullies bully?’ and Homophobia led to thought-provoking and challenging conversation and the week finished off with staff and students wearing blue together to show support and unity. A special mention to Year 7 who had a number of anti-bulling ambassadors doing their various parts, notably taking assembly in which they created a ‘Don’t be a bystander’ piece very much following the line that the strongest people out there don’t just help themselves, but help others too. On top of this, every student in the year group wore a blue card out of their blazer pocket to send their own little message. All this has created a wonderful and positive atmosphere around the school and the anti-bully ambassadors are here to stay to continue not only to be a voice for the students but a voice against bullying. Well done all involved.

MATHS NEWS The maths department has already started enjoying successes worthy of celebration this term. We entered KS5 students for the prestigious UKMT Senior Challenge earlier on in November and one student was awarded GOLD, nine students achieved SILVER and five gained BRONZE. Mubarak Yusuf did exceptionally well with the highest score of 112 enabling him to be entered for the British Mathematical Olympiad. Around 1,000 invitations to the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 are sent to pupils who score highly in the Senior Challenge each November, and are qualified to represent the UK at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). KS3 and 4 students will be entered for similar competitions later on in the year. Our KS4 students are gradually embracing the challenges of the new and tougher mathematics specifications. Students are attending Peer Mentoring sessions in the morning, an extra lesson after school every Wednesday and Saturday morning interventions to help equip them with the confidence to tackle challenges in this new GCSE specification. We have dedicated Thursday after school to KS3 students so they can focus on problem solving activities such as “The Rubik’s Cube Challenge” and strategies for Chess. However, students of all years are welcome if they have an interest in this activities.

FINANCE NEWS It’s been a bumper term for the A Level Finance students at Woolwich Poly. The first piece of good news was that 10 students in the 2015 – 2017 cohort had secured such good grades in their AS studies that they qualified for a scholarship fund to study a degree at the London institute of Banking and Finance. This ranged from 10% to 25% off the cost of their first year fees which will make a huge difference to those taking up this offer. Next, Jon Simone, a Compliance subject matter expert for Financial Markets at Nice systems (A world leader in financial compliance software) attended a finance lesson to deliver a Q&A on the main topics that the students were investigating. Jon fielded questions on compliance, trading, the banking crisis and a led a lively debate on the problem & opportunities that could arise from the UK’s decision to exit the EU.

The students really benefited from John’s real world explanations of key concepts in the industry and his ability to turn the theory that the students are learning about into examples that he has seen first-hand.

WOOLWICH POLYTECHNIC SCHOOL FOR GIRLS COMES TO THAMESMEAD! A girls’ school in the heart of Thamesmead is about to become a reality. Woolwich Poly for girls will be the sister school to the already Outstanding, Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys and will be part of the multi-academy trust, PolyMAT. The target opening date for this eight form entry school will be September 2018 but we are conscious that this is an optimistic target and may well be September 2019. We are in the hands of the DfE and building planners. We know that the actual build will take eighteen months from the start of construction. This school will share all the core values including the ethos, culture and outstanding pastoral system that make the boys’ school so successful. The girls will receive the same nurturing and support as the boys. We were overwhelmed by the support we received from the local community when we first announced the possibility of the girls’ school and we are looking forward to continuing and developing this relationship further as we move closer to the opening date.

BROMLEY THEATRE TRIP On Thursday 11th November a small group of Year 7 boys went to Bromley Theatre to see ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’. They had been reading the book and it was a great opportunity to see the story live. “Ms Cressy came with us and Ms Gibbs, who drove the minibus, and it was quite far. The show was absolutely amazing with ‘Granny’ growing so long and tall, she came through the roof. Her voice was squeaky and just like Miss Smith’s when she reads the book in class. We really enjoyed the show and when Grandma shrank and disappeared after taking some of George’s medicine! We shrieked with joy to see the old hag disappear. We also liked it when the chicken was chasing George round the stage and the chicken fell over! All together it was one of the best trips we have ever been on.”

YEAR 10 NEWS We have had a very successful start to Year 10. The boys are settled and focussed on their GCSE subjects and are working very hard to ensure that they get the very best grades that they can. We welcomed parents to Year 9 and 10 information evening to share details about the new GCSE courses, the new grading system and ways in which parents can support their sons. Many parents attended and found it very useful, thank you to those that came along. We have celebrated our Poly and Proud pupils of the month, in September the winner was Harley Brown 10B2 – he was nominated by his tutors for simply ‘being awesome!’ In October, the winner was Wilton Premakumar 10S1 who was nominated by his tutors for ‘gaining a very high number of achievement points and having a very mature attitude towards his learning and progress.’ Well done to all of the boys nominated each month, it’s a tough job having to choose just one! We are awaiting the nominations for November and December and look forward to reading all the positive comments. This term we have focussed on different themes each month. In September we looked at ‘Who you are and who you want to be’. This included an assembly about choosing the right path and thinking about who your allies are. In October, we celebrated Diversity month. In Year 10 we looked specifically at labels and how they can have negative connotations. This lead to discussions on many topics such as racism, xenophobia, homophobia and sexism. For November and December we are focussed on Kindness & Giving. Each year group have a different charity or cause to support; year 10 are supporting the homeless charity Crisis. We have asked each tutor group to donate at least 2 boxes of food, clothing, toiletries and other items that are needed to support homeless people this winter. The deadline for this is Friday 9th December. Thank you in advance for your support. We hope you all have a lovely winter break and wish you all a happy new year! Year 10 team

YEAR 11 NEWS In the summer a large number of students took several GCSEs in community languages, Statistics and PE. The students were very successful and the results ranged from A* to C. The boys have received a gold shield badge which represents their achievement. The year 11s completed two weeks of PPEs from 31/10/16 to 11/11/16. This was an opportunity to prepare the boys for their upcoming GCSEs next year. Although this was an intensive period for them, and after a few glitches the year 11’s coped extremely well with their exams. Wednesday 30 November is Year 11 parents’ evening from 4.30pm – 6.30pm. You will be able to discuss your son’s PPE results with his teachers and any concerns they may have.

RUGBY TRIP RESULTS

On Saturday 19th November the PE department took 13 boys to Twickenham to watch England vs Fiji. The trip was designed to reward the dedication of the boys who have attended regular training sessions and have represented the school during this 1st term. On arrival to Twickenham it was clear to see that they would not be disappointed! The atmosphere inside Twickenham was electric as always and the boys all enjoyed taking part in the Mexican waves and singing along to Swing Low and The National Anthem. The game finished with a comprehensive victory to England and all the boys commented on how much they had enjoyed the game. The PE department hope that the trip will encourage more boys to take part in rugby look forward to the next trip to Twickenham!

Football It is early days of the season but the year 8 team are unbeaten so far and the year 11’s have won all their matches except one.

PE NEWS

We are the current London champions for years 10 and 11 and are on track to retain these titles. Athletics Last year’s year 7 team were the London champions and they have been training hard every Thursday in preparation for the defence of their title. Cross Country Woolwich Poly won years 8, 9, 10 and 11 and came second in the Greenwich Cross Country Championships in October at Avery Hill. An amazing achievement and special mention should go to Zarif Khan in year 9 who defeated all the year 10’s in the borough by becoming district champion.

6 FORM NEWS th

Induction

A Message from the 6th Form Team We can’t believe how quickly this first term as gone: the Poly Sixth Form has achieved so much in such a short amount of time. We have been busier than Santa’s elves: from enrolment to a two day induction to fund-raising to a cultural fashion show to a sensational lip-sync battle, and of course, this doesn’t include all the hard work that is taking place in every corridor in every classroom, leading up to the pre-public exams. It has been non-stop!

Our induction for year 12 students is a great pathway to making new friends and acquaintances! It provides great opportunities to encounter and engage with new people. This year we had a teambuilding day. Luckily, we had the opportunity to do a number of exciting activities, such as: archery; public speaking; a bouncy castle assault course; a gladiator like game where you had to knock your opponent off their podium. It was hilarious… and highly competitive! It was a fun-filled day, which allowed both year 12 and 13 students to speak to one another, work as a team and develop new friendships. There was a real sense of community and as a result our 6th Form is a unit where the Year 12 and 13 students work together as one team.

We would like to begin by welcoming our wonderful new Year 12 cohort, whose transition into sixth form has been an exciting one. Not only do we have so many familiar faces, but we have also opened our doors to a record breaking number of students from schools in the borough and beyond. Furthermore, we welcomed back our new Year 13s and are currently supporting them through their UCAS applications, all which will be completed before the end of term.

So far this year we have organised a lip-sync battle, we have had a Culture Clash day to celebrate our diversity and we are planning an inter-form football tournament, a “movie” evening and a Christmas tea party for the elderly in the community. By the time we get to the end of our first term, I think we will all deserve a break – teachers and students alike!

As we look ahead to this academic year, we also must look back. We began this term celebrating the fantastic results of our previous Year 13 students: an astounding 53% of this fabulous cohort ‘flew the nest’ with A* - B grades, most of whom are now diligently coming to the end of their first year at university. In fact, 90% of them took this path, whilst an outstanding 25% went onto Russell Group universities. We are proud of each and every one of them and wish them well in their next steps.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful holiday. Anne Bassi

6th Form News: the students’ perspectives: Our Business Speaker Programme I couldn’t believe that in my first few weeks of 6th Form, we had a business speaker in from the financial industry. Immediately, I thought Canary Wharf, possibly The City. But no, Mr Jon Simone, Subject Matter Expert, Communications Compliance of NICE Systems flew in all the way from America to Woolwich Polytechnic School in order to give an assembly on his career. Not just America… but New York. Not just New York… but Wall Street. I couldn’t believe my luck. Mr Simone spoke to all 6th Form students to encourage us to take our studies seriously, and also on how we can make the most out of the opportunities we are given. His speech helped raise our aspirations even further, enabling us to understand that we shouldn’t take opportunities that we are given for granted. I found him to be inspiring and was jealous of the year 13 students who spent their Finance lesson with him that morning. I can only hope that he comes back next year, when I am in my final year. 6th Form School Council The 6th Form school council have an active role in taking into consideration the needs of our sixth form as a whole, to make it a welcoming, enjoyable and exciting experience for the students attending the Poly. This year, we have an exciting line-up of year 12s & 13s as our sixth form school council, who are all ready to take up this challenge. Currently, we are busy planning our year 13 graduation. There has been multiple ideas that we have developed to make sure we can raise as much money as possible to ensure we have the grandest graduation ever. We also want to make sure that those who take part in giving their money will enjoy the activities that we organise for them. With support from our sixth form leaders, so far we have raised over £300 in just under 3 months with events such as: a bake sale, a lip sync battle and culture clash. We hope to raise at least £1000 by the end of the academic year. However, this is not just about raising money: we also hope to bring the sixth form together in the best way possible. One that doesn’t just promote giving –for a good cause - but also promotes diligence and togetherness. There are many plans for the future such as movie nights, sports days, and car washing. Recently, we have been planning for a Meridian Inter-Form Football Tournament. The school council’s aim is to ensure to make sure that our sixth form experience gets better and better every term. Alero Year 12 English Literature, History & Business

Lip-Sync Battle On October 18, we held a Lip Sync Battle, inspired by the television series of the same name. The Poly’s most musically and rhythmically gifted 6th form students battled it out on the dance floor, shedding blood, sweat and tears for two gruelling hours to be crowned the Poly’s Top Performers. Ms Brown, Ms Elliot and even the Sweeny himself acted as X-Factor style judges, deliberating over every performance and giving their final verdict at the end. The girls spared no expense with their humorous (and sometimes hard to watch) performance of Soulja Boy’s “Crank Dat”, complete with baggy tracksuits and Monopoly money, making it rain and turning the entire hall into a nightclub. Aisha and Damily bought more girl-power by performing Lil Mama’s “Lip Gloss” (I’m sure you can guess what it was about), while Michael Martins treated us to some of his inner Ghanaian fire with a performance of Jaij

The brilliant idea of clashing cultures saw Nigerians wearing Indian clothing, and Vietnamese students wearing African clothing. The colourful and vibrant clothing, which was a drastic change from the traditional business wear, united the sixth form and brought to attention the diversity within Woolwich Poly. During lunchtime, the ordinary menu of sandwiches and crisps were scrapped, and replaced with an array of diverse dishes including Jollof rice, various curries and a buffet of snacks including samosas, bhajis and spring rolls. Accompanied with the variety of dishes was an atmosphere of togetherness that amalgamated the sixth form in ways that have never happened before. The burst of different flavours of food accompanied with the beat of traditional African drums depicted Woolwich Poly as a place where different students of different nationalities can display their cultures, and allow all of us to unite in our differences. Natasha Year 13 Economics, English Literature & History

Diversity Month The school has a different theme every half term for students to ponder: we began the year with the idea of “celebrating diversity”. As part of this, and to celebrate Black History month, some sixth form students decided to organise a fashion show, which we put on for all year groups. This was to demonstrate how proud we should all be of our heritage. Indeed, we displayed the beauty of each of our cultures by adorning customary attire and strutted our stuff on the catwalk to the banging beats of traditional music. We all had a blast and hopefully encouraged others to ensure they embrace, and be proud of, the diverse culture we live in. Hollands’ “Pinger”. Ahmed and Yusuf and I (perhaps the only group to remember that the title of the contest was “Lip Sync Battle” rather than “Dance Battle”) gave a heart-stopping performance of Flo Rida’s “Low”, while Jason and Sean tried (and some would say failed) to emulate the King of Pop himself with a performance of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. Ultimately Kacem, Misimi, Joseph and Tyrrell won the night with their riveting performance of JLS’s “Everybody in Love”, melting the heart of every female student, and perhaps even some teachers (cough cough Ms Brown) and leaving not a single dry eye in the hall. Hamza Year 13 History, Economics & Business

Culture Clash In October, the entire sixth form participated in a culture clash, which celebrated the diversity that resides in our school. The day consisted of school students dressing up in different cultural clothing including Saris, Ankra and Kente cloth.

Joseph Year 13

Year 12: My point of View On GCSE results day, I arrived at Woolwich Polytechnic School to enrol as a year 12 student - after not completing my first year at AS at another school. In September, I started Woolwich Polytechnic Sixth Form as a student who didn’t have much faith in school. There are several reasons I didn’t have much faith in advanced level education, but I knew that it was the best route in order to get to where I wanted to be in 10 years’ time. I decided to give myself and sixth form another chance. It wasn’t just the amazing grades that the students had previously achieved that enticed me, but the Poly offers extraordinary teachers and opportunities to all its students alike. During my first week at Poly, the year group was taken to the prestigious University of Cambridge. Already it was clear that the sixth form had high expectations for all its students. This insight to university life and the different courses that Cambridge had to offer was highly beneficial to a student like me who otherwise would not have had the opportunity to visit the campus. The Poly has helped me grow so much as an individual and allowed me to accept that not everything in life is going to be easy but have provided a pathway in which I can continue on, in order to better myself. I am a strong believer in the saying “have no regrets”, but I must admit my only regret is not coming to Woolwich Polytechnic Sixth Form in my first year of A-levels.
