18th Annual
Win Mumby All India Basketball Tournament 8-11 November 2017
Winston W. Mumby 1925 – 1998
Win Mumby was born on February 19, 1925 in Lucknow, India. His life-long commitment with sports was influenced by his father, a Methodist missionary, who founded the first college of physical education in India and was the coach and manager of India’s Olympic Team to the 1932 Olympic Games and the 1934 British Empire Games. Win attended grade school and high school until 1941 at Woodstock School. After serving in the U.S. Air Force as a B-17 bomber pilot during World War II, Win attended Stanford University, graduating with a degree in education. Win’s first job was back at Woodstock as a science teacher and athletic director. It was there that he met his future wife, Carol Downs, who was working as the school nurse. Win and Carol were married in 1951. Several exciting jobs followed, including serving as tutor to the royal family of Hunza, working as director of the Sport and Athletic Department at Forman Christian College in Lahore, Pakistan and owning and running a private Shikar company in Nepal. In 1960 as a result of his close contacts in Pakistan, Win was asked to join the Coca-Cola Company to work in Lahore as their representative. Thus began Win’s legendary career with Coca-Cola. Win was considered one of the great pioneers of the Coca-Cola Company in Asia. For 35 years, until his retirement in 1995, he explored the far corners of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Greece, Cypress, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and China with Coca-Cola. His direct, no-nonsense approach helped him develop new markets for Coke. He summarized his philosophy of marketing this way, “you have to be entrepreneurial, use common sense, and you must believe in your product and/or service.” It is entirely fitting, therefore to honour Win Mumby who died on October 13, 1998, with this the18th Win Mumby All India Basketball Tournament.
