ISSUE 1 MAY/JUNE 2022

Welcome to another amazing season at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion! I am proud to announce a spectacular lineup of events this year as we continue George and Cynthia Mitchells’ dream of having a first-class performing arts facility right here in The Woodlands. The Pavilion will kick off the performing arts season with a concert and movie on June 16 with The Little Mermaid – Live in Concert, sponsored by Texas Children’s Hospital – The Woodlands. As Disney’s animated classic plays on the large LED screens, the Houston Symphony will perform the film’s Oscar® and Grammy®-winning score live on stage. The Houston Symphony will continue to present a number of spectacular performances throughout the season including A Night on Broadway, Classical Mystery Tour - A Tribute to The Beatles, plus our annual favorites Star-Spangled Salute and Hocus Pocus Pops. In keeping with our mission of making the arts accessible to all, we are pleased to offer FREE lawn and mezzanine seating for these events. I am excited to also announce our new partnership with The Woodlands Children’s Museum. This great opportunity enables us to further share our passion and dedication to the arts in the community. As the official performance sponsor, we will be bringing a great lineup of artists to the Museum including musicians, dancers and so much more. I encourage you to attend our performing arts events and become a season subscriber for only $200 per ticket. Being a season seat holder is a great way to show your support for the arts and enjoy some great performances. Bring the family and come enjoy this world class venue. See you on the hill. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s Arts in Action award program aims to recognize, reward and encourage talent and achievement in the performing arts among middle and junior high school students around the greater Houston area. The Pavilion recently recognized 19 students from several school districts that were nominated by their music teacher/director, not only for their excellence as artists, but for their dedication, leadership and commitment to their entire school community. Award winners received a certificate and small prize for their honor from The Pavilion and were featured on The Pavilion’s social and digital marketing channels.

Arts educators have the power to inspire the minds of our youth and set a foundation for a love of the arts. The Pavilion recently awarded 24 grants totaling nearly $25,000 through the venue’s Arts Educator Professional Development Grant program. The opportunity was launched specifically for arts educators in the community to help them grow in their craft. Funding was available for educators to participate in high-quality, arts-focused professional development like summer workshops, conferences and seminars. “The Pavilion is committed to supporting the next generation of artists by engaging local students in hands-on learning. Through offering the Professional Development Grant program for arts educators, we are able to help expand opportunities for local students to be exposed early and often to the performing arts.” Jerry MacDonald, President and CEO of The Pavilion This year, teachers submitted grant applications to cover expenses for a variety of arts trainings over the summer and fall including the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention, the Texas Choir Directors Association Summer Convention, The Midwest Clinic and Convention, the Texas Orchestra Directors Association Conference and the Broadway Teachers Workshopa professional seminar featuring master classes and panels with Broadway’s finest artists. 6

“TCDA’s Summer Convention is something that I look forward to every summer. The information that we receive from reading sessions to finding accessible music for students and interest sessions pertaining to my subject given by my colleagues are invaluable. There was some skepticism as to whether we would be able to have an in-person convention, but I am grateful that we proceeded. The funding I received from The Pavillion proved to be extremely useful in making sure that I continue to receive the necessary professional development needed to be a better choir director in CISD. Thank you so much for the support!” - 2021 Grant Recipient To learn more about future grant opportunities or other educational outreach programs, visit The Pavilion's website at woodlandscenter.org/education.

Part of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s mission is to provide support to young artists as they pursue college degrees in the arts. This amazing opportunity is awarded to students through The Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarship Program. Each year, scholarships are awarded to local high school seniors based on talent and academic performance within five disciplines - vocal music, instrumental music, theater arts, dance, visual arts and computer graphic arts. This year, Partners were able to award 20 new scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $7,500. The scholarship recipients represent 15 high schools across ten school districts. Over 30 renewal scholarships were also awarded to recent recipients of a scholarship who are majoring in the Fine Arts and in a field of study consistent with the discipline in which they initially auditioned. On Monday, April 25, The Pavilion treated 2022 scholarship recipients to a special celebration in the Woodforest Bank Club. Along with recognition and desserts, scholars got the chance to meet each other and some of the key donors that made their scholarships possible. Members of the Scholarship Committee put together a program for the evening that highlights each student and outlines the process of winning a scholarship, including this year’s excellent talent judges.
