Woodend Barn Gallery in the Lang Byre GALLERY OPENING HOURS: Tue to Sat 12pm-4pm (Also open by appointment – Call 01330 826520 for details)

River of Fish Saturday 20 June to Thursday 16 July A celebratory exhibition showcasing and documenting the work of artists Mel Shand, Hilary Duncan and Helen Jackson, and the hundreds of local people who have been involved in their River of Fish project this year. Mel, Hilary and Helen have been working with the River Dee Trust to bring their educational programme into schools and groups across the community. They have held workshops to make life-sized ceramic salmon at different stages of their development, raising awareness of the challenges this important local species faces. The resulting installation comprises over 150 salmon, including a ‘whopper’ made from willow and adorned with ceramic scales, which is on display outside Buchanan Food for a period of the exhibition. Come along and see if you can spot your scale, parr or smolt or simply to enjoy a great arts project that is making a difference in our community. The artists will host an auction of specially commissioned salmon at Woodend Barn in October, which aims to raise money for the River Dee Trust and Banchory Sport Village. Tuesday to Saturday 12pm-4pm Opening Event: Friday 19 June 6pm-8pm

John Newling: The Map Room of the Last Islands Saturday 22 August to Wednesday 23 September This major exhibition of previously unseen work is a powerful, and visually beautiful, illustration of the ways in which artist John Newling explores the relationships between the natural world and systems of value within society. Since 2009, Newling has been creating art works that are constructed, primarily, through the growing, observing and preserving of Moringa Oleifera trees. Often referred to as the Miracle Tree or Famine Tree, gram for gram, the Moringa leaves contain: seven times the vitamin C in oranges, four times the calcium in milk, four times the vitamin A in carrots, two times the protein in milk and three times the potassium in bananas. It is for this and other extraordinary properties of this tree that it has been referred to as the world’s most generous tree. The paintings are maps of a kind, into and through which Newling explores his relationship to the trees and to wider ecology. They are a truly beautiful cartography of language, colour and shape; islands that Newling hopes may never be lost. Tuesday to Saturday 12pm-4pm Opening Event: Saturday 22 August 12.30pm-2pm Artist’s Talk: Saturday 22 August 7.30pm

Autumn Highlights We’ve lots of exciting events to keep you busy in the colder months. Make sure you sign up to our mailing list or become a Friend of the Barn to be the first to hear about all our performances, workshops, exhibitions and activities. We’re delighted to have the new season of live screenings from The Royal Ballet and Royal Opera House including Le nozze di Figaro and The Nutcracker. In October we’re pleased to be partnering with sound – an innovative festival of new music. From contemporary classical to electro-acoustic, improvised, experimental and jazz music, the festival brings together a wide range of musical styles in a variety of concerts, workshops, installations and talks across North East Scotland. sound encourages audiences to discover new sounds and expect the unexpected. The festival will run between 22 October – 9 November. November sees the return of Flock, our Contemporary Christmas Craft & Design Fair. With over 2,000 people through the door last year, make sure you come along to source the best of Scottish Craft and Design in time for those special festive gifts.
