Without North Shore Autism Circle, my child would have nowhere to go after school. The phone doesn’t ring for my child and these programs offer one of the few things that bring a smile to my son’s face.”

April 19th, 2018

Dear Woodbury Ball for Autism supporter,

First and foremost, thank you for making a difference for this tremendous cause. I am a working mother of two typical children. Granted, they are anything but “typical” but this is a word a mother of a child with autism aspires to. Those who are not touched by the cause in some way truly cannot appreciate the heartache many of these children and their families face and the magnitude in which they truly need the support of everyone around them. When launching Woodbury Magazine in 2003, giving back was—and always will be—at the core of our mission statement. As life progressed and brought its challenges, autism touched my family, alongside the one in 45, according to a recent study, children diagnosed today. I have been incredibly fortunate to spend time and create friendships with some of the most incredible mothers of children with autism whose strength surpass any and every expectation. I can’t possibly relate to how they feel or what they are met with when they return home. They travel through their day with heads held so high they make it easy to forget the reality of their world which shamefully allows us “typical parents” to sometimes forget. It is out of my interest to support these women, their children and families that the Woodbury Ball for Autism was created. What’s more, it is people like you who have made giving back through this event possible. Your support of the 15th annual Woodbury Ball for Autism and its JOURNAL OF HOPE is literally creating programs on the North Shore that allow these children to be a part of something so very special. “Without North Shore Autism Circle, my child would have nowhere to go after school. The phone doesn’t ring for my child and these programs offer one of the few things that bring a smile to my son’s face,” said one mother. Along with North Shore Autism Circle, 100% of the proceeds are shared with Autism Speaks Long Island, The Elija Foundation, The Adler Center for Special Needs at the Mid-Island Y JCC and Family Center for Autism. This is why we are here; to give these children and their families a chance at life-changing therapy and all the support we possibly can. Early intervention can be crucial to a child’s development and the Woodbury Ball for Autism gives us the power to help bring that opportunity to others. The Woodbury Ball also allows us to pay tribute to the leaders in our community making a difference. Thank you to Kenneth Adler, Lynne Koufakis and Samantha Sohmer for accepting this well-deserved honor; your tireless efforts to support those in need inspire us all. That said, I’d like to take a moment to thank our production partners and tremendous team of volunteers; without whom this could not be the success it is today. Standouts for the cause worthy of tremendous gratitude are Amy Greenberg, Kristin Schlossman, Deborah Horn, Rachael Klein, Jocelyn Wasserman, Hedy Wasserman, Eden Buchbinder, Sara Green, Tara Nawroth, Regina Grange and my outstanding husband, Jonathan Cohen, among others. Thank you to all for being a part of this very special initiative.. Whether reading this as a guest of the event, a journal supporter, sponsor, an auction donor or simply because you make a habit of reading journals to be sure to notice those in your community who are truly giving back, it is you we have to thank for making one of my most important personal and professional missions come to life; making a difference. Sincerely,

Jennifer Polansky Editor-in-Chief, Woodbury magazine

Me with my amazing nephew Spencer; my inspiration to support the cause and proof that early intervention can make all the difference.

WE ARE PROUD TO PAY TRIBUTE TO OUR 2018 WOODBURY BALL FOR AUTISM HONOREES FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING DEDICATION TO THE CAUSE WE SALUTE

SAMANTHA SOHMER As a mother, wife, social worker, and advocate, Samantha Sohmer is devoted to working in the field of individuals with developmental disabilities. Samantha’s mother founded Life’s WORC and her father was an advocacy attorney. Samantha’s older sister suffered brain damage at birth and was later diagnosed with profound developmental delays and cerebral palsy. She was a patient at the now defunct Willowbrook State School on Staten Island. Her parents led the filing of the groundbreaking Willowbrook Class Action Lawsuit. As a result of their advocacy, Willowbrook was closed and the laws were changed so that individuals with developmental disabilities live just like anyone else in small community residences and receive therapies and services to support them in living as independently as possible. Samantha currently works as a clinical social worker providing psychotherapy to adults with developmental disabilities and works closely with the leadership of Life’s WORC and the Family Center for Autism. Samantha is also very active in her community serving as PFA Co-President of the Roslyn Schools and is the Secretary of the Norgate Civic Association. Samantha resides in Roslyn with her husband Spencer and children Blake and Morgan.

KENNETH ADLER Kenneth Adler spends much of his personal time advocating and raising funds for children and young adults with special needs. The Adler Center at the Mid-Island Y JCC is named for Ken and his wife Ann, who participated in the creation of the program back in 2004. They saw a need in the community and worked to fulfill that need for many families, including their own, who were struggling to find appropriate programming and assistance for their children who had been diagnosed with a variety of developmental disabilities. Ken and Ann have two daughters – Sarah, who is in her final year of graduate school to obtain her Masters in Special

Education, and Leah, an active participant in the Adler Center programming. Professionally, Ken is a partner at Loeb & Loeb LLP based in New York City, and is Chair of the firm’s Technology and Outsourcing Group, a part of Loeb’s Advanced Media and Technology Department. With over 30 years of experience, his practice includes drafting and negotiating all types of complex outsourcing and information technology agreements, including those involving cutting-edge technologies such as robotic process automation (RPA). His practice also includes advising clients on data security, privacy, and intellectual property matters. Regularly recognized for expertise in his field, Kenneth was named “New York City - Technology Lawyer of the Year” by U.S. News and Best Lawyers in 2017 and continues to be recognized as a thought leader in his field.

LYNNE KOUFAKIS Lynne Koufakis is a passionate advocate and philanthropist. She and her husband, Michael, have four adult children, two of whom are on the autism spectrum. Lynne formed the Parent Teacher Friend Association (PTFA) at the School for Language and Communication Development (SLCD), to raise funds for school programs and connect staff with parents. She chairs their Annual Golf Outing. Lynne has also served an integral role the expansion of The ELIJA School. The Koufakis’ are a founding family of ELIJA Farm, and Lynne chairs ELIJA’s Annual Golf Outings and Galas. Lynne currently serves as Co-Vice Chair/Secretary of Life’s WORC. The Koufakis’s have been featured in People magazine and on “The Montel William’s Show”, and have been honored by The ELIJA Foundation, SLCD, and the Queens Democratic Club for their work in Autism research. Many other organizations are the recipients of their generous support. Lynne has generously dedicated her life to increasing awareness and getting proper educational and medical services for all children with special needs.
