Glasgow Women’s Library is No Ordinary Library It is unique in Scotland and a national treasure! Glasgow Women’s Library (GWL) celebrates the lives and achievements of women and champions their contributions to Scotland’s culture. This vibrant information hub is open to all. An Accredited Museum and home to a lending library and archive, GWL also provides an exciting range of events, activities and courses through its various learning programmes. You can join the Library for free. Information on joining and borrowing can be found in the ‘Getting Involved’ section of this programme, along with details of volunteering at GWL. In this programme you will find lots of events and activities, all of which are linked to the materials we have in our library, archive and museum artifact collections.

We Are Moving! We are thrilled to have finally secured permanent premises after several years in temporary accommodation. With thanks to Glasgow Life, Glasgow City Council and Clyde Gateway, GWL will soon be moving to our beautiful new home in the former public library building on Landressy Street in Bridgeton. At the time of writing we still have no definite date for relocation. By the time you are reading this, we may already be fully up and running there! So please check our website at womenslibrary.org.uk or email us at info@womenslibrary.org.uk for the very latest news. Following relocation, we will be open and ready to welcome you but also need to undertake internal refurbishment works to other areas of the building in order to finally create the home of our dreams. Contact us for more details on the relocation timeline and how you can help: email info@womenslibrary.org.uk, visit us at womenslibrary.org.uk and find us on Facebook.com/womenslibrary or follow @gwlkettle on Twitter

Celebrate all things books between 25th N National Poetry Day: Poetry For Fearties

Illuminated Letters: Literary Heroines

Thursday 3rd October, 2.30 to 4.30pm (£3/free)

Tuesday 26th November, 12pm to 2pm (free)

Do you have a favourite poem you’d like to share with others? Would you like to write a poem in a relaxed and comfortable way? In preparation for Book Week Scotland you can come along to our National Poetry Day event to discover some new poems, write some of your own at our fun and fear-free poetry writing workshop and then submit your poem for our Dragon’s Pen event.

National Short Story Week: Fiction For Fearties Thursday 14th November, 2.30 to 4.30pm (£3/free) Never read a short story? Perhaps you have one to share that makes your spine tingle? Do you feel inspired to write your own? Come along to our National Short Story Week event, listen to people’s short stories, and have a go at writing your own to submit to our Dragon’s Pen competition.

If you’ve been in and around the Library you will know how much fun we have been having writing and illustrating letters of love and honour to lost heroines. As part of Book Week Scotland, we are hosting another in our exciting series of Illuminated Letters workshops. We will be focussing on your favourite fictional women. Did the optimistic outlook of Pollyanna inspire you, or Anne of Green Gables’ joyful way of looking at life make you look at your own life in a different way? Would you like to write to Elizabeth Bennett and tell her how proud you were of her for her wit, honesty and sparkiness despite the petty, class-bound society she lived in? Or even, perhaps, thank Lisbeth Salander for reassuring you that revenge is a dish served deliciously, chillingly, scarily cold? Come and be inspired and have fun. And, if you can’t make the workshop, we will have suggestions and materials available all week, so just pop in and write to your literary heroine.

Join us during the 16 Days of Activism to Eliminate Violence Against Women for an exhibition that charts the development of the organisation to where it is today. Badges of Honour is an exciting GWL Heritage Lottery funded project that aims to encourage women to donate their badges and tell the stories that surround them to the Library. We are also keen to capture more information and solve some of the puzzles surrounding the badges we have in our collection. Launched on Mayday 2013, the door is open until Mayday 2014 to anyone who wants to get involved. Maybe the time is right to add your precious badges to our archive: our archivists will welcome you and invite you to tell us more about your treasures. Maybe you have memories of a badge you loved and lost? Arrange to come in and browse our collection, add your own badge and tell us more about what badges mean to you. You can see our recent donors talking about their badges at womenslibrary.org.uk Contact our Archivists Laura and Lindsey to be involved in the project and tell your badge stories.

den histories of Glasgow’s women Summer Sea, Winter Sea Thursday 19th September, 6.30pm (free) Joan Eardley’s biographer, Christopher Andreae, talks about Joan Eardley (1921-63) - one of the most influential Scottish painters of her generation whose paintings and drawings reflect urban and rural Scotland in an expressive visual language unlike any other artist’s. Being a serious artist was a “tough” business, especially for a painter determined to make her work – for example her sea paintings – a head-on confrontation between experience and its expression in paint. Showing a remarkable balance between characteristics which historically have been regarded as either typically male or female, Eardley’s work can at once be tough and objectively honest, yet tender and maternal – as seen in her drawings and paintings of Glasgow children. Illuminated Letters Workshops for Women Across Scotland Glasgow Women’s Library and the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow are inviting women across the world to write illuminated letters of love and honour to an inspirational woman. We are inviting women and girls locally, nationally and internationally to create their own illuminated letters to lost heroines: women who are no longer alive but whose histories and achievements are secreted safely in the shelves and boxes of the Women’s Library. All the letters received will be exhibited on International Women’s Day in March 2014. Come along to one of our illuminated letters writing and craft

workshops happening in various locations from Aberdeen to Wigtown. Explore our treasure chest of gems, embellishments and other craft and writing materials and create an illuminated letter to a woman who inspires you. The letter can be as long or as short as you like. We can help you write it and you don’t need any artistic or craft experience. We have compiled a list of 100 inspirational women, but we would be delighted if you wish to write a letter to a local woman or another woman who has been important and inspirational in your life. If your heroine is not on our list, it would be great if you could bring a picture and some information about her to add her to our archive.

From now until March 2015, Glasgow Women’s Library will be developing new resources and hosting events in partnership with other organisations which will give women a safe space to share their

Our Mixing the Colours project starts an exciting new phase in autumn 2013, thanks to funding from the Scottish Government Community Safety Unit. A new project worker will join the GWL team to develop new resources and facilitate events. We will be looking at how women have experienced and overcome sectarianism in local and global contexts.

Getting Involved

How you can take part and contribute Volunteering at GWL A team of over 70 volunteers are involved in all areas of our work including the planning and delivery of many of the events in this programme. As well as the opportunity to meet lots of interesting women, volunteers are offered enriching learning opportunities, wider horizons, support, training, and of course lots of tea and their travel expenses. If you are interested in getting involved in our work please contact Gabrielle at the Library to find out about our current volunteering opportunities and also the exciting new programme of volunteer training and support generously funded by Henry Smith Charity and the Roberston Trust. You can see some of our current volunteer stories in a video on our website where you can also download an application form to start volunteering yourself.

We Need Women on Wheels! Are you a woman who cycles or would like to cycle more? We are looking for help with the distribution of the exciting programmes we produce three times a year to make sure we reach as many women as possible. At the launch of each new programme (January, June and September) join other women cyclists for tea and scones before setting off in pairs to drop off our programmes in friendly businesses and organisations along a route of your choice. A great opportunity to meet other women cyclists, get out more on your bike and increase your cycling confidence or help other women grow theirs. Please contact Gabrielle on 0141 248 9969 or email info@ womenslibrary.org.uk if you would like to find out more.

“I’ve met lots of amazing women. People from various backgrounds with interesting ideas. Women who are excited and passionate about what they do, which is very stimulating. Being involved with the library is really beneficial to me as an individual” A volunteer at GWL

Getting Involved

How you can take part and contribute Joining and Booking How do I book an event? To attend an event or course we ask you to join the Library: this is really easy to do and is completely FREE! Just complete a form to receive your borrowers card and we will post this out to you. Forms can be completed online, or you can call in & see us to fill one out. Joining gives you a unique GWL number that you can then use to register on events.

Do I need to pay? While a lot of our events are free, we do ask for a small contribution towards some of our learning events. Where you see prices listed against an event these generally fall under two categories: Full Price for people who feel that they can afford to pay a small amount to attend events and want to contribute to the library’s work, and Subsidised Rates (usually free) for students, people on a low income, unemployed or in receipt of benefits. We do not ask for proof of this: it is done on a trust basis and you self-evaluate your situation. GWL Friends can access all our learning programmes for free.

All the money we receive helps us to keep providing events and courses, and directly supports the work of Glasgow Women’s Library.

Why is it important to book first? It is important for us to know how many people to expect at all events as this affects the spaces we use and how many staff and biscuits and teabags we need! It is also important so that we can ensure you have all the details you need about an event including the venue at this crucial time as we plan our move, especially if there are any last minute changes. It is also just as important for you to cancel a place in advance if you can’t attend as we often have waiting lists. So don’t let someone miss out on an event they would have loved to attend, give us a call. Women sometimes want support with all areas of literacy and numeracy. Others need help with just one aspect: for example, writing job application forms, being more confident about studying, or doing creative writing.

Learning English English as a Second or Other Language (ESOL) classes take place every week in the Library in partnership with Langside College. If you would like more information please contact us. For more information on any of our projects or services please contact us on 0141 248 9969, or email info@ womenslibrary.org.uk

It is up to you what you would like to learn and practice. We provide a safe learning space and value each learner as an individual, working with them to tailor learning to meet their needs and improve their confidence. It is a free service and you can get support in a group or 1:1 with a tutor, or both, it’s up to you! If you would like more information, or just want a chat about how we can support you, please contact our new ALN Development Worker, Donna Moore.
