IT IS HARD TO SAY GOODBYE!

T

o all of our readers and supporters, I have always said that I would never do a “letter from the Editor” in the magazine, so I will not! I will, however, begin by saying that in the past 5 ½ years I have had much fun, collaborated with a fabulous team of people, met and made friends with some of the finest people ever. My goal for the magazine was to bring to you stories of interest, some with trials and tribulations, some to make you think. It was also important to provide great value for my clients so they could bring you our readers information about who they are and to shop local. They are some of the greatest people ever! Please support them. At the same time giving a variety of information for you, the readers and getting to know you through events that we held to help local non-profit organizations. Growing up I was never a person who participated in cliques, I felt that they were divided and everyone was more concerned with who was doing what and who was prettier than the other. Really? I had no time for that. I saw the world as it is, large and vast and my idea of a good time was going to Hendricks Chapel to listen to a debate between G. Gordon Liddy and Daniel Ellsburg, for those who may not know; they were part of Watergate. So who am I? I am just an ordinary person who wanted you to be entertained in every issue, and showcase women around Upstate NY. There is nothing pretentious about me. If you ask my opinion, I will give it to you with no fluff. Sometimes when we are on the inside, we do not look at things from the outside, and this is something we should always do. I have never hidden behind a closed door or have been unattainable. I am no different from anyone, nor do I feel that I have ever been better than anyone else. People have always told me that I am that Open Book. I say what is on my mind and stand up for those who cannot do it for themselves. Additonally, to our couple of doryphores, Rock On! You will find something new. My belief is that we all have choices, and we should make our lives what we want it to be. We live in a world where everyone judges or passes judgment when they have no idea who you are! To me, that is the craziest thing ever. Only God can judge you! I have said in many of the stories you have read; be yourself, do not be afraid to follow your dreams, failure is not a failure; it is a learning curve and your opportunity to tweak what you are doing and do it better. Never let anyone tell you that you are less of a person in any way shape or form. The world continues to turn, we live on and now it is time for me to move on. I have been offered a new opportunity and if you read my story about “Legacy” , I am continuing mine and will be leaving NYS. Although Central New York will always be home, I am making a new home and will take on the task of completing my book. This issue shows some of our favorite covers, really all of them were our favorites but there is only so much room. Inside a recap of stories from select issues for you to get a sneak peek in case you missed it. Remember you can read all of our issues online at wouny.com. Nevertheless, from the bottom of my heart, I Thank you for supporting Women of Upstate New York and love all of you. In closing, as one of my most favorite comedians used to say: I’m so glad we had this time together, just to laugh or maybe sing a song. Seems we just get started and before you know it, comes the time we have to say so long! ~ Carol Burnett All The Best.. Mary McCandless, Publisher

We Are Bringing Back “Ladies Night” The very popular ‘Ladies Nights’ will be on both Thursdays (10/18 & 25) with wine tastings, and vendors for the ladies. This year we will also be adding ‘Designer Days’ on both Tuesdays, when the Interior Designers will tour guests through their homes, giving out decorating tips and answering questions.

This single site event allows patrons to walk through fully decorated & landscaped newly constructed houses. Guests will see the newest floor plans, designs, services and products in the residential construction industry, allowing them to gather information for their existing homes or build new! Not only are all of the ‘Parade’ houses for sale, so is the majority of the furniture, rugs, lamps, curtains, artwork, etc. – just ask at each home! Throughout the run of the Parade of Homes, we also hold fun daily events and we are working on those details now. On The Move with

Nixon Pack Properties

O

ne of the houses at the upcoming Parade of Homes has a fresh face behind it. Or perhaps it’s a face you’ve seen before on TV. Kaylea Nixon, a local television personality (and previous host of Bridge Street on NewsChannel 9) is designing and staging a house with JMG Custom Homes. Kaylea and her husband Jon owns Nixon Pack Properties and specializes in real estate, design, and DIY’s. They were brought on by JMG to give the Parade House a new flavor, and that’s just what the Nixon Pack hopes to accomplish. The way Kaylea puts it, “We don’t want it to feel like we took a corner of a furniture store and plopped it down in this new home. We’re working to achieve a collected, lived-in, layered look.” She also wants it to be a space that inspires each person who walks through the door. Kaylea says, “Whether it be the young couple saving up to buy their first home, someone who has been putting off that much-needed kitchen renovation, or just a person waiting for the right inspiration to take on a new DIY, I hope this house speaks to them in some way.”

14

WOUNY • SEPT/OCT 2018

This is the first Parade of Homes the Nixon Pack has worked on and Kaylea said she had a big aha moment recently. “I’ve always been fascinated by all the moving parts that go into making a house a home and the amount of people that put their blood, sweat and tears into building the structure.” The time spent making every decision of the how’s and the where’s and the choice of the materials. Then you get to the best part where you breathe life into it and craft it around the family who will live there. We feel so grateful to be a part of this process and the love that will go into these walls.” Kaylea and Jon are working together on the Parade House, but this isn’t the first project they’ve done together. In fact, these college sweethearts started their business while still in school at Siena College. “My Dad was a real estate guru for 44 years. I spent summers shadowing his every move, as one of his students in his mentoring classes, attending open houses, translating for Spanish-speaking clients. I learned the business from him, and at a very young age fell in love with all aspects of owning

a home. As poor college kids, I suggested to Jon that we get our real estate licenses to help pay our way through school.” Since buying their first home when Kaylea was just 21, they’ve owned and renovated 6 of their own houses in 10 years. “We fell into the renovation part of this out of necessity. When we bought our first home, all we could afford was a fixer upper, and we had no money left for repairs. So we learned very quickly about the value of sweat equity. I think it was a surprise to both of us how much we loved all the elbow grease, working together, and every aspect of making a house a home.” Jon is the handyman of the two, doing much of the work on their projects himself. Kaylea has the eye for design, and uses her real estate background to help make selections best for resale. Once family and friends caught on to the work, they were doing on their own homes, they started asking to hire them for their houses and Nixon Pack Properties was formed. Having lived in Chicago for the past five years, Kaylea and Jon have recently moved back to Central New York starting their

own home show, Walkthrough Wednesday. “I had been looking for a way to combine my experience as a spokesperson, a Realtor, a home designer, and to provide something of value to my friends and followers. One day, the idea of doing a show with weekly house tours, real estate nuggets, and design inspiration came to me, and I couldn’t shake the excitement.” She contacted her good friends Kristen and Jake of Call of the Loon Productions, and they immediately partnered together to create the home show. “There is so much beauty in the communities across Central New York, and I feel so grateful to be able to bring people along with us each week to see everything from fixer uppers and new builds, various price ranges and unique styles of homes.” Jon wasn’t originally going to host each episode alongside Kaylea, but their chemistry and the spontaneity he brings to the show adds that missing piece. “We sought out to provide a look into the floor plans and values of houses around us, some DIY ideas, and renovation suggestions, but if we also succeed in giving you a laugh or two, that makes our day.” Kaylea documents their own Pack Projects on their Instagram @ nixonpack daily, where you can catch a glimpse of their five rescue dogs and sweet toddler with a toolbelt, their two-year-old son,

Grey. You can see Walkthrough Wednesday each week on the Nixon Pack’s Facebook, YouTube, and IGTV, and you can visit the home they’ve designed with JMG Custom Homes at the Parade of Homes October 13-28 at Crown Point in Jamesville. Visit www.nixonpack.com to see current projects and to contact Jon and Kaylea.

Positive Energy Radio Frequency Skin Tightening

R

adio frequency (RF) technology used to tighten skin and remodel tissue is one of the most exciting modalities that I have seen in the aesthetic plastic surgery industry in quite some time. The medical team at our office frequently attends conferences to learn about and to be aware of emerging technologies that allow us to best provide our patients with options to achieve their goals. This past year, I attended a very prestigious conference and there was an entire forum dedicated to a technology that has existed for a long time, but is now being made available to use in a safe and very effective way. What is Radio frequency energy? Radio frequency energy is an electrical energy that transforms to thermal energy when introduced to tissue. This stimulates sub-dermal collagen production, thus causing tightening of the surrounding tissue. RF energy produces an electric current in contrast to laser-based energy that produces energy via light. This minimizes tissue damage and does not affect melanin in the skin. This means that RF energy can be used on all skin types and allows for different depths of penetration based on what is being treated. As a practitioner, I am always looking for ways to optimize the results that we can achieve for our patients. I found this to be a modality that treats a patient population that we often would send away and tell them to come back when things got worse. Common areas like neck, jowls, arms, bra rolls and inner thighs are places that patients frequently complain about. There are surgical corrections for these that will provide great improvement but leave a scar and have associated down

By: Beth Phillips,RPAC time. If there is enough laxity in these areas, surgery may still be the best option, but for what I call the “in- betweeners”, I think this is a great option. Instead of excising tissue, a small knick is made in the skin to allow for a probe to be placed under the skin. The radio frequency device (in our case, it is Bodytite or Facetite by Inmode) has an attached probe above the skin, fashioned similarly to a tuning fork, that sends RF energy between the two probes. There is a computerized feedback mechanism that will turn the machine off if the temperature becomes dangerously high to the tissue being treated. The only resulting incisions are less than one centimeter. Early results are seen immediately, but continued collagen formation will create ongoing improvement for approximately one year. Another modality where RF technology is used is called Fractional micro-needle radio frequency (FMR which is Fractora by Inmode in our office). Our aestheticians already perform a very large volume of micro-needling procedures with excellent skin improvements. FMR provides greater potential collagen production. It also is used successfully in the treatment of hyperhidrosis of the axilla. Sweating of the underarms, palms and feet can be greatly improved and sometimes eliminated with radio frequency micro-needling. Radio frequency assisted lipolysis (RFAL) is liposuction that employs RF to improve the outcome by tightening the skin as well. This works well for male gynecomastia as well as areas such as knees, inner and outer thighs, pubic mound, arms and abdomen. The Bodytite platform is essentially “smart lipo” which is a term used for

liposuction where fat is Liquifed before it is suctioned out. This has traditionally been performed with a laser. The risk of burns from the laser is higher. With RFAL, or as we call it “Smart-ER lipo,” the computerized feedback largely eliminates the risk of burns. RF technology has so many applications in the plastic surgery and aesthetic setting. There is too much information to provide in one article. Attached is one website that contains videos and research supporting the technology. https://inmodemd.com/ As the final article that I will be writing for Women of Upstate New York Magazine, I would like to send my best wishes to Mary McCandless in her retirement. It has been a very enjoyable and satisfying experience to be able to share information about what we do at CNY Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery. I have met so many wonderful women via this publication. I thought that “Positive Energy” was a good title for my last article. I believe that the message that Mary has been sending to her readers about “Making Ordinary Women Extraordinary” is a message that should NOT be retired. My first appearance in WOUNY was in an article where I was asked my favorite quote. The quote by Robert Ingersoll, ‘We rise by lifting others,” continues to be my favorite. Even though my articles focus on ways to improve your outward beauty, I continue to believe that true beauty comes from within. From all of us at CNY Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery, we applaud the positive energy that “Women of Upstate NY Magazine” has cultivated over the years!!

ost of us have heard the saying, “If you want to know a woman’s age, look at her hands.”

Well, I say, ‘Not anymore’!! These days, people are doing more to camouflage their age. Many people exercise and take better care of their bodies. There are countless products and procedures that help to maintain a younger appearance. Neurotoxins (Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport), fillers, laser treatments and surgery are among the most common. It has become increasingly difficult to distinguish someone’s age. Your hands don’t have to give away your secrets anymore. There are several procedures aimed at giving the hands a more youthful look. This past year, Radiesse, a dermal filler, gained FDA approval for injection into the hand. Radiesse is made of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), which is a substance found naturally in human bones. The CaHA is suspended in a gel carrier and when injected, provides immediate volume to the areas in which it is placed. It also stimulates collagen production in these areas for long-term improvement of the skin. Other fillers ( such as Juvederm or Restylane) are used in hands to provide the same result, but are used as an “off label” indication because it has not yet received FDA approval. Some physicians prefer fat grafting to the hand for a rejuvenating technique. Fat is taken from the body via liposuction. It is then re-injected into the hand. There are pros and cons to fat grafting over dermal fillers. Fat is more permanent, but when

18

WOUNY • SEPT/OCT 2018

placed, it is less reliable to tell how much will stay. Fat can feel lumpier and will change size if you have weight fluctuations. Either way, adding volume to the hand minimizes the appearance of blood vessels seen and makes skin look less wrinkled.

satisfying when performed by an experienced and properly trained professional. If you would like to learn more, contact CNY Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery 315-663-0112.

Another common procedure to rejuvenate hands is the use of lasers to smooth the pigmentation on the skin and eliminate dark spots. (Dark spots are often referred to as “liver spots” but truly have nothing to do with the liver!). Broad-band light (BBL) or intense pulsed light (IPL) are simple office-based procedures with minimal discomfort and virtually no downtime that will cause these spots to fade significantly or disappear completely. Chemical peels and micro needling procedures improve the overall skin texture and integrity. By decreasing the appearance of fine lines and aiding in stimulation of new collagen production, these are quick procedures that provide very nice results. Also worth mentioning, but much less commonly performed, are sclerotherapy and skin excision. Sclerotherapy is used to cause prominent and unsightly blood vessels to collapse. Skin excision can leave scars. As always, with your skin, use of sunscreens and limiting UV ray exposure to the affected areas will keep your rejuvenated hands looking more youthful for years to come. Be sure to know the credentials of anyone performing these procedures. The procedures discussed are extremely safe and

Over the years, we have been blessed to have Beth Phillips of CNY Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery share many great stories about what we can do to look and feel better. We are all subconsciously critiquing our bodies and wondering what we can do to change it, and Beth has provided tons of information to help us to make educated decisions. Her stories give men and women options and here are some of those stories. HAND REJUVENATION

Bro-tox By: Beth Phillips,RPAC

One of the many increasing trends in male plastic surgical procedures is Botox (or other neurotoxins such as Xeomin or Dysport) injections. Laughingly referred to as Bro-tox, this procedure is used to soften wrinkles in the face. In 2015, a study from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) showed that the number of men receiving injections increased by 337 percent since 2000. While most women get Botox injections to look younger, most men seem to get Botox in order to stay competitive. Dr. Daniel Mills, president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery stated, “They’re simply having more procedures done because they want to maintain competitiveness in an increasingly ageist workplace.” In our office, we have seen a huge increase in the number of men that are interested in plastic surgical procedures. Botox, or “Bro-tox”, is one of the most common. Many, if not most men come in at the urging of their significant others. I would estimate that almost half of my male patients have had their first visit along with their wives or girlfriends. Sometimes they start as observers, but many times they become regular customers on their own. Botox, Xeomin and Dysport are all considered neurotoxins and work by blocking the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, thus causing temporary paralysis of a targeted muscle. It is injected in very small aliquots using a small gauge needle in the areas deemed appropriate by the practitioner. The onset of action usually is seen within a couple of days, but can take up to two weeks to see the full effect. Botox lasts approximately 3-4 months and then must be repeated in order to maintain the desired effect. These injections are most commonly used to treat wrinkles in the glabella (commonly known as “eleven’s,” “frown lines” or “devil’s horns”), forehead and around the eyes. It is also used in the treatment of sweating. It can be injected in the palms of your hands, soles of your feet, or underarms to eliminate or at least greatly diminish perspiration in these areas. To be complete, I should mention that there is another area that botox has been reportedly used...also with a catchy name. “Scro-tox”, as you might have guessed, is botox injections to the scrotum. This has been cited as being effective for the treatment of both

wrinkles and perspiration. While Botox injection has become one of the most common male procedures in our office, there are still many other cosmetic procedures for the guys. Other common procedures that our male patients have performed: facial fillers, liposuction, Sculpsure (non-surgical fat reduction), tummy tucks, facelifts, neck lifts, male breast reduction, PRP for hair loss, laser treatments for facial veins or toenail fungus. Men have become more comfortable with coming in for aesthetician services such as facials and chemical peels. With June being the month in which Father’s Day is celebrated, I thought it would be appropriate to mention that the male equivalent to the “Mommy Makeover,” now termed the “Daddy does-Over,” is further evidence that the guys don’t want to be left out! Cosmetic procedures are not just for women anymore and have become very commonplace for men. Learn more at www.plasticsurgeryofsyracuse.com 315-663-0112

“Eye”

want to look as young as

I feel!!!

O

ften in my business, women come to me and complain that they feel younger than what they see in the mirror. Expressions like “The eyes are the mirror of the soul” or “Your eyes are a reflection of your spirit” often cause women to be distressed because they feel that they are still vibrant and yet a multitude of factors may leave their eyes looking more tired and aged than they are. The topic of improving the under eye skin is commonly discussed in the plastic surgeon’s office. The topic is difficult because there are so many factors to be considered. The skin under our eyes is most often the first area where signs of aging appear. Most women know that a lack of sleep or a day of excess sodium intake can dramatically affect the look of their eyes. There are many problems that can be addressed. Puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles are some of the most common complaints. Patients come into the office and hope that there is simple a cream or injection or even procedure that will make these area look years younger. While there are modalities that help, the best thing to do is to protect the skin in the first place. Proper hydration of the skin both internally and externally by drinking plenty of water, avoiding excess amounts of caffeine and alcohol that tend to dehydrate you.

By: Beth Phillips,RPAC Keeping allergies under control and using anti-histamines to shrink swollen vessels and tissue. Avoiding sun damage by applying a daily sunscreen to the skin under the eyes and wearing sunglasses when in direct sunlight. Avoiding smoking is a must. Unfortunately, heredity often plays a significant role in the appearance of a person’s under eyes. In these cases, we need to look for treatments instead of just good habits. For fine lines, retinoid creams are helpful as a maintenance regimen. Botox is often another first line fix for under eyes. By placing Botox in the muscles that cause the skin to wrinkle thousands of times a day (as people often do with facial expressions), it allows the skin to rest and be less “worn” in its appearance. Ablative lasers are often used to resurface the under eye skin, and IPL can be used to help with dark pigmentation. Dermal fillers such as Volbella, Belotero, Restylane and Voluma can be used to help fill in areas that have lost volume. These fillers need to be placed at an appropriate depth to avoid further discoloration caused by a phenomenon called the Tyndall Effect. Fillers in this area should be placed by someone with significant experience with treating under eyes. Most of the injections in this area are considered “off label,” but can be placed safely using the proper

techniques. There is also a surgical procedure called a lower blepharoplasty that can be performed to improve the lower eyelid. This procedure is performed with either an incision that runs just below the lower lash line or one inside the lower lid. The traditional blepharoplasty has an incision that runs along the lower lash line. Fat is removed or repositioned, and skin is removed. Sometimes muscles and/ or ligaments are tightened-this is called a canthopexy. Alternatively, a trans conjunctival blepharoplasty involves an incision inside the eyelid with fat removal or repositioning without the removal of skin. There is also another procedure called a pinch blepharoplasty that removes less skin and is usually performed in conjunction with laser resurfacing. Rejuvenation of the under eyes is possible with varying results, and the treatment is often multi-factorial to achieve the optimal result. As always, a consultation with a qualified professional is always the first step to implementing a skin-care regimen that best suits your needs. Immeasurable Strength: Kelly Quinn Shetsky

Regan’s

Act of Kindness

O

n Wednesday, January 4, 2017, Mark and his daughter Regan Shetsky were in a tragic accident leading to the death of Regan. It has now been over a year since the incident occurred but Kelly Quinn Shetsky, Regan’s mother, remembers the situation clearly. “Mark dropped Gavin, our son, off at Holy Cross School first, then went to Eastwood Baptist to drop Regan off at nursery school just after 9 a.m.,” Kelly said. Mark and Regan were standing in between two parked cars only moments after he had taken her from her car seat when a woman floored her gas pedal and hit their car, pushing it into the car parked next to it, according to Kelly. This now left Mark and Regan exposed for when she accelerated again, hitting them and pinning Mark between the front of her SUV and another one, resulting in serious injuries to his legs and Regan instantly died from the blunt force trauma to her head, she said. Unfortunately, after this accident occurred and months of waiting, there were no legal charges against the woman who was driving the other vehicle, Zung Tung. “The state Department of Motor Vehicles revoked her license, determining she failed to ‘exercise due care’ when she caused the crash, nothing has happened since that,” Kelly said. After the tragic accident happened to the family, they were lucky enough to have a large, loving community around them of friends and family. That was the one bright spot through all of this; it has been amazing to see how much people support

By: Samantha Leader us, according to Kelly. “We will forever grieve the loss of our angel. We will never ‘get over it’ or ‘move on’. Regan brought much joy to our family and it’s not the same without her,” Kelly said. A few organizations also helped the family while they went through this tragic loss such as, The Hospice grief Center and Hope for Bereaved parent’s meetings, according to Kelly. In March 2017, which would have been Regan’s 4th birthday, the Shetsky family launched Regan’s Acts of Kindness. The family did this in a way to spread the smiles Regan always did by inspiring people to practice and spread kindness, according to Kelly.

wick neighborhood, and Kindness rock initiative that is spanning the world. One of the big events that is coming up on June 23rd,, rain date June 24th,, is the 2nd annual Regan’s Outdoor Movie Night at Lemoyne College. The event starts with a family fun night at 6p.m. which includes a bounce house, face painting, balloon animals, gaga ball, crafts, bubbles, henna tattoos, raffles, and refreshments, according to Kelly. The movie starts at dusk, and this year will be “Ferdinand.” “Last year, we held the event with the film ‘Sing,”, it was a celebration of Regan’s life because she loved having movie nights and would have loved this event,” Kelly said.

“Regan’s act of kindness places particular emphasis on bringing children joy and teaching them to pay it forward with gestures of empathy, gratitude and love,” Kelly said.

This year they are expanding with the addition of a bounce house and adding an extra hour to the family fun night portion, giving family tons to do, Kelly said. Everyone joining this event, make sure to bring blankets and chairs to sit on during the movie!

On April 3, 2018, Regan’s Acts of Kindness, Inc. was granted its 501(c) 3 status and are now officially a not-for-profit charity. All the projects that the family have started foster kinder and more supportive communities, Kelly said.

“We have chosen to honor Regan since her death because we want people to know her and say her name (pronounced reegan, not ray-gan) even if they didn’t have the privilege to meet her, she deserved to live on,” Kelly said.

The projects to-date that the Shetsky family are putting on include Regan’s Corner at The Wild Animal Park (12ft tall giraffe, benches carve with owls and her handwriting, and a bronze plaque), New playground equipment at Holy Cross School, Christmas ornament distribution to babies born at St. Joseph’s and children at Golisano, Memorial garden in Sedg-

Stefanie has given you great recipes and ways of cooking with plant based foods! By: Stefanie Heath

I

’m an Upstate New Yorker through and through. When I travel, I often catch myself gushing to people about all that this region has to offer. My elevator pitch goes something like this: “We have the Adirondack mountains to the right, the Finger Lakes wineries to the left, and the rolling hills in between. Boston, NYC and Toronto are a short driving distance away and the beautiful countryside is in my backyard.” On a daily basis, I find myself sharing gratitude and affection for this area in one form or another. It’s not just the breathtaking landscape that draws me to this area; equally as enticing is the bountiful produce that this great state provides us. From seed to plate, summertime leaves us no shortage of decadent and delicious whole foods. Check out some of the July/August produce grown right here in New York. I encourage you to pick your own or buy from your local farmers at an area market. Kale – June through November Kale is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. It naturally contains Vitamins A, C, K and B6, as well as potassium, magnesium and calcium. This leafy green food can be found in both

24

WOUNY • SEPT/OCT 2018

green and purple varieties. Kale also contains antioxidants like beta- carotene and polyphenols that help keep our immune systems happy and healthy. I know plenty of people who turn their noses up to kale. If that’s the case, try adding a handful to your morning smoothie. Combine your regular fruit smoothie ingredients with some kale for a quick boost of nutrition. Another fun way to try kale is by making kale chips. Trim the stems off and discard, lightly coat the kale leaves in olive oil, season as you wish and bake on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet for 10-15 minutes in a 350 degree oven. These healthy treats will satisfy kids, too! Raspberries – July through September These decadent little berries are as pleasing on the eye as they are on the palate. Raspberries contain countless health benefits and happen to be one of my favorite go-to snacks. Did you know this little berry can help improve memory? One study found that higher intake of flavonoid-rich berries can reduce cognitive decline. Potassium is also found in this power food, which is essential in maintaining a healthy heart. Raspberries also contain ellagic acid, a natural phenol antioxidant found in fruits and veggies. Research has shown that raspberry phytonutrients have an important role in lowering oxidative stress and reducing inflammation, which may alter the reproduction of cancer cells. When it comes to cooking and baking, raspberries are versatile. Use fresh raspberries to

make homemade vinaigrette to dress a salad or try making raspberry lemonade for a summer party. Make raspberries the star ingredient in oatmeal cookies or Sunday morning pancakes. Zucchini – July through September I discovered an appreciation for zucchini during adulthood. As a kid, I could never understand the concept of adding this vegetable into my baked goods. Now, I can’t get enough of this wonderful veggie! I’ll admit this cucumber look-a-like is a little bland. However, there are surprising health benefits to zucchini that may keep you coming back for more. Like many fruits and veggies, zucchini is an ally to our hearts. It contains fiber and potassium, which aids in cardiac health. Zucchini has a high water content aiding in healthy digestion as well. The combination of fiber and water in this veggie can act as natural constipation relief. It’s not just Vitamin A and Vitamin complex-B, zucchini is also rich in Vitamin K which has been found to strengthen bones and teeth. Cutting back on carbs? Then try zucchini noodles or “zoodles.” The zoodle trend is something we’re seeing more of and I predict it will become a mainstay on menus across the country. Treat zoodles as you would any other pasta dish and bask in the fact that you’re eating pasta without an insane amount of carbs! Cut zucchini lengthwise, hollow out and add a savory stuffing for a healthy side dish.

M

imi Kennedy has made a triumphant return to television in the popular CBS comedy Mom. From executive producer Chuck Lorre, the series stars Emmy Award winner Allison Janney (The West Wing) and Anna Faris (Scary Movie). Originally from Rochester, New York, Mimi has had a long love affair with acting. As a child, she attended plays with her mother, who was an actress in community theater in the Rochester area. “I was always attracted to pretending,” Mimi said. “I think being an actress made sense to me.” Despite what she calls the “many deaths and resurrections” her acting career has endured since the 1970s, she has proven time and time again, that a good performer’s career never dies. As a woman with a family in showbusiness, the journey wasn’t always easy though. “Every place along the line I had reasons to know I could do it,” Mimi said. “But I was just juggling a marriage, children, a lot of things.” From her performance as a woman suffering

from cancer in Erin Brokovich, to starring as Helen in the Woody Allen film Midnight in Paris, Mimi has graced screens both large and small in countless acting roles. Television audiences may recognize her as Abby O’Neil in the sitcom Dharma & Greg, as Ruth Sloan in Homefront and most recently as a series regular, playing Marjorie, in CBS’s Mom. But what makes Mimi’s work so fulfilling is when there is a deeper message being conveyed through entertainment. As she reflected on some of her most notable projects through the years, Mimi explained what made some television shows stand out over others. “When it’s great writing - it’s Heaven,” Mimi said. “Dharma & Greg, those first three years of that five-year run — brilliant. I love Mom. Chuck Lorre and his crew are doing great writing on Mom. And of course, my fellow actors are brilliant — Allison Janney, Anna Faris, French Stewart. Homefront as a drama has absolutely brilliant, beautiful writing.” Mimi’s talent as a comedic actress is equally matched by her ability to play dramatic on-screenroles across a wide variety of genres. Mimi says her nomination in 1993 for Best Supporting Actress in a Dramatic Series by

Creating Her Recipes, Path and Empire! Julie Ann Sageer’s irresistible Lebanese cuisine quickly gaining demand! WOUNY • SEPT/OCT 2018

J

ulie Taboulie’s hot cuisine is exactly that – everyone wants some of it! Her extremely warm, genuine and loving demeanor matches perfectly. Growing up in the suburbs of Central New York, and her early years in Utica, NY, Julie Ann Sageer was always surrounded by family, friends and…. Food, Lebanese food. If you are not familiar with Mediterranean home cooking and the popular Julie Taboulie…,please allow me to introduce you. Julie Taboulie, who is Julie Ann Sageer, received this loving nickname by her tightknit family when she was just a little girl. Taboulie is one of the first Middle Eastern grain salads Sageer learned to make at a young age, and it makes perfect sense that it has become an everlasting part of her identity. It was, and still is, one of Sageer’s favorite dishes. Sageer lost her beloved father when she was only six years old. Her step-father, Richard, has been all she could have asked for and more; their relationship is very strong. Our Publisher, Mary McCandless and I were lucky enough to meet Sageer in her stunning; McKenzie-Childs accented kitchen where each episode is filmed (but we will come back to that later). While Sageer was talking to us and answering questions, she was happily cooking for us as well. She never skipped a beat. Listening to Sageer speak of her successes, watching her cook amazing food and noticing out her window several peacocks, roosters, Guinea hens and rolling hills…yes, I’d say this was one of our favorite interviews. “I have always had an obsession with food and cooking, since I was a little girl. Growing up the youngest of four in a family-owned restaurant, food was always a focus. Both my parents are from Lebanon. Though it wasn’t the path I thought I’d follow after college, I could not be happier. My dream is now a reality,” said Sageer. “None of this could have happened without my Hindi “ (mother), added Sageer, with whom Sageer is extremely close. Sageer went to college in New York City. Afterwards, in 2007, she became a successful television producer, writer and host for segments on Bloomberg’s NYCTV. Sageer said, “I absolutely loved it. But it was not driving me. I was especially fond of the cooking segments on TV. I truly related to it.” Shortly after, Sageer noticed there were

32

no cooking shows focused on Lebanese or Middle Eastern cooking. Sageer laughed, “The professional chefs I did see cooking Lebanese food were doing it wrong!” Deep down, Sageer’s passion was building inside of her. She wanted to teach people – all people and any people, how to cook Lebanese food. There simply was not enough representation. The turning point for Sageer truly came after an incredible, month-long visit to Arde, Lebanon. “Later that year [2007] I was able to travel and finally see the country of Lebanon, of which I had heard so much about over the years. When my mother came to the United States, she came only with her brothers and left behind her four sisters and parents. I cherish my family and especially my Sitto (maternal grandmother). She would visit us in the U.S. on occasion, but I wanted to see Lebanon for myself,” said Sageer. That trip was immeasurably important and meaningful to Sageer. She met many family members for the first time, explored her Lebanese roots and embraced her beloved culture. Sageer’s family in Lebanon were exactly as she was – warm, friendly, loving and wonderful cooks! They shared countless recipes and Sageer amp ed-up her Arabic speaking and learned much more about the language, she so adored. “I returned to New York and continued with my job at NYCTV, but knew I wanted to make a change,” said Sageer, and that, she did. Sageer called her mother at home in Upstate NY and said, “I am coming home, and I am going to teach Lebanese cooking.” Once again, Sageer’s mom was by her side to support her. Sageer moved home the following year, began teaching Lebanese cooking classes all over the area – Liverpool, Skaneateles, Ithaca, Baldwinsville to name a few. She also started research as well, as to the status of Lebanese cooking classes. I accomplished many of my cooking classes with the help of Library Director Carol Johnson, who is now the Director of the Mundy Branch of Onondaga Country Public Libraries. Sageer stated, “My cooking classes were a huge hit, each one sold-out. People loved them, because it was different and primarily the people attending the classes were non Lebanese. I started with a small budget and introduction courses. I taught how to cook Taboulie, Hummus, Falafel and Baba Ganoush.” All the while, Sageer’s mom was right by her side. She continued to teach Sageer new

Serway and Seymour:

Aiming High with Infinite Energy By Kristen Penfield

W

ho are Serway and Seymour? Please, allow me to introduce you. Laura Serway and Cindy Seymour own Laci’s Tapas Bar and Restaurant in Syracuse. But know this: though the restaurant is extremely popular, that is only a small percentage of what they do in Syracuse. The married couple, who met in 1981 in Orlando, (Seymour grew up in Florida, Serway in Sylvan Beach, NY) realized immediately that they were meant for each other. Both have a heart that gives relentlessly. Both are filled with passion to help others. Both know their capabilities. Both put themselves on the line. Both continuously lead projects to help those in need. Both are making a tremendous difference in our community.

LA (Laura) + CI (Cindy) = LACI’s! “We realize how blessed we are, and we are extremely thankful,” said Seymour. “We take the passion in our heart to help others. It doesn’t matter what race, color, etc. people are…we should never judge; only help one another,” she added. The warmth exchanged between the two is worthy of noting - they are as genuine as they are kind and without a doubt, the Syracuse community has been experiencing a steady incline of improvement from the work they do. They feed the community, build for the community and create opportunities for so many others. The two have determination, passion and continue to be successful business women. “We clearly see the need for help out there, and even though we believe people are innately good; they don’t know how to help. Some discuss helping, but take no action. Laura and I choose to make a difference and ask almost daily of ways we can help,” said Seymour. Seymour recalled after hearing about Hurricane Sandy and determined to help, she sat up in bed, put a message on Facebook that she was headed to assist, and that whomever wants to join her could – just be ready to work on whatever they need. The response was overwhelming. Serway jumped on the bandwagon to help, of course, and brought with her, 20 cooked turkeys. “We fed over 600 people. We worked hard and we also made people laugh at a time that it was so needed,” recalled Serway. Clearly, an example of their passion turned to action. Seymour noted, “So many people in our

community need help. There are facts that many people are not aware of. We must teach people what is truly happening out there.” Seymour, who spent time in the Air Force, holds a degree in electrical engineering and is also completing her second Master’s Degree with a focus on PTSD and Military Sexual Trauma. She was employed in Public Administration, a Commander in Law Enforcement and as a First Responder. Seymour has a lot of experience in male-dominated career fields. “After years in the military, it was obvious that they don’t want us [women] there. There are a large number of women who are sexually assaulted in the military and even larger number of women who are sexually harassed,” explained Seymour. “Most people are not aware of the devastation of this because they simply don’t know the facts. Blissful ignorance is what hinders awareness and change,” she added. ‘If we don’t know about it, we’re good’ seems to be the stance many people take, unfortunately. Seymour said, “If we were all blind for a month, we would be surprised who we wake up with. We see with our souls. Help is needed all the time, even in our own community.”

Blackened Cod Sliders

Apple, Pear & Carmelized Onion

Serway agrees with Seymour wholeheartedly. Though both Serway and Seymour are armed and equipped with education, experience, a plethora of community affiliations and awards, to see their heart in action better explains who they are. Their awareness and capabilities are proving to make such a positive difference.

How Healthy Is Your Scalp?

W

hen it comes to maintaining your health, many people associate being active and eating healthy with weight loss. It’s easy to assume that if someone is thin or in shape, they are healthy. Chances are they are healthy on the inside as well but there are multiple health factors that go beyond what the human eye can see and often remain undetected until it’s too late. Even our hair can give the appearance of being healthy. We assume that if we wash our hair several times a week, we are doing enough to keep it that way, and if it looks clean, then our scalp must also be healthy.

free DHT Blocking Bio-Therapy Shampoo and topical treatments.

Unfortunately, most shampoos on the market today can do more harm than good. Toxic ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulfate, polysorbates, or polyethylene glycol are all components that can cause serious damage to your hair and scalp. These chemicals will give the appearance of healthy robust hair but again, looks can be deceiving.

Hair-loss experts recommend combining this approach with Laser Hair Therapy (LHT) in order to obtain the best results. Combining these patented formula hair products and Nutritionals with Laser Hair Therapy, men and women all over the world has experienced continued successful hair growth. By adding the laser light therapy hair growth will be accelerated. LHT is a non-surgical, medically tested, non-toxic, and painless hair-loss treatment. This treatment is used to prevent hair loss, thinning hair, and treat scalp issues, and could be done in the privacy of your own home.

We expose our locks to the outside elements on a daily basis. Everything from air pollution to the sun damages our hair and scalp. Because the damage typically goes undetected for so long, most people aren’t aware of any damage until they start losing their hair. In some cases, this can lead to baldness. How often do you think of the health of your scalp? What if you could reverse some of the damage and prevent this type of hair loss from occurring? At Genesis II, they offer a Multi-Therapeutic approach designed to prevent hair loss and promote healthy hair. The products are developed by doctors and hair-loss experts and are made for men and women combating damaged hair and scalps, thinning hair, and hair loss of all types. The Multi-Therapeutic approach is made up of proven growth activators, hair Nutritionals, complete supplements and sulfate

Most of us are familiar with Minoxidil, an FDA proven hair regrowth topical with a fairly high success rate. Well, Genesis II has found a way to use Minoxidil and make it more effective. As part of the approach, they mix the Minoxidil with a Carrier Enhancement Agent which keeps it in a liquid state longer in order to penetrate down into the follicle and have a maximum effect on the growth of the hair shaft.

According to Jeanine Stevenson, consultant at Genesis II, one of the most important things you can do is question your hair loss as soon as you notice it. If you’re interested preventing future hair loss from occurring and learning more about Genesis II’s Hair-Loss Treatment and Prevention options visit their website at www.genesishair.com/ hair-loss-treatment-prevention/. Spring into Savings Your local GEICO office could save you money on car insurance all season long!

315-479-2886 geico.com/syracuse 2528 Erie Boulevard East Some discounts, coverages, payment plans and features are not available in all states or all GEICO companies. GEICO is a registered service mark of Government Employees Insurance Company, Washington, D.C. 20076; a Berkshire Hathaway Inc. subsidiary. GEICO Gecko image Š 1999-2018. Š 2018 GEICO

Insurance, a word we hate to hear but one that is necessary. Not only is it required by law, but also important in protecting you, your family, and assets. We tend to frown at the costs however should you suffer a loss it is there to help you through it. There are many ways to decrease the costs of your insurance. For instance if you take a defensive driving course you can get a discount on your auto insurance. Security devices can also decrease your premium. Keep your driving record clean. If you get a ticket whether it is a traffic violation or parking ticket, take care of it right away. We tend to ignore these things and end up getting a suspended license. That will affect your insurance rating. If you own a home, discounts apply for security systems. Check with your agent to find out what additional items can help you to decrease your premium. Bundling: Bundling your coverage is a another way to group all of the insuance that you have. So, now that you have all of the things that you want, a house, boat, car, or motorcycle, they will all need to be insured. Who wants to have different policies for everything they have? Not many! One or two policies should be all that you need. When you choose to insure under one company, you can bundle all of your coverage and save some money. Also when you keep all of your policies with one company it also decreases paperwork, and it is with someone you are already comfortable with. We also look at the bottom line when getting a quote, you should not cut coverage for a lesser price. You may need that coverage should you have loss.

44

WOUNY • SEPT/OCT 2018

Added Value: We think that basic coverages will take care of our insurance needs, however keep in mind if someone is injured and you are at fault and if you do not have enough coverage, you could be personally liable. That means when your insurance is exhausted they could persue you personally. It is important that when you meet with an insurance agent that you review all of your policy limits to have the best coverage to keep your exposure limited. In addition, if you have multiple items such as a house, car, boat, etc., Umbrella policies will cover you for anything in excess of your policy limits. Limitations for Umbrella policies are also something you should discuss with your agent. This adds extra protection for you and your assets. Additional Discounts: There are many discounts that you may qualify to receive. Some discounts can apply if you are in the Military, Veteran, Government worker, student reductions and more. The best way to find out is call for a quote and see how you can possibly save more money. Quotes are free, there is no obligation and you just may be able to save more money for the things you want. If you would like to find out more about the many discounts that we offer, call or visit us at GEICO. We have a local office to serve you and answer all of your insurance questions. How Secure are You? I

dentity. Dictionary.com describes it in many ways, and a few of them are; The condition of being oneself or itself, and not another. The state or fact of being the same as described and finally the exact likeness in nature or qualities.

How do you identify yourself ? It is not something that we think about very often. When you meet someone for the first time they do not ask how you identify yourself ? We simply assume that who we are, best describes us and there is no need to put it out on the table since it will show through in time. However, it is something we need to protect especially in our high-tech world. We, without thinking click on websites and give our information freely to capture more information that we are in need of. How often have you visited a website and the immediately ask for your email? There are many out there, and there are also the scammers that are looking forward to capturing whatever they can tap into your identity! Below are steps that you can take to help secure your information: 1. It is a good idea to get a shredder. Documents that you think to have no value to you may be valuable to the identity thief. Shed it all! 2. Make secure passwords for your computer or other devices. Do not use the same password or ones that are easily identifiable. 3. Use antivirus protection and do not give out personal informa tion on unsecured websites. 4. Clean out your wallet and purse regularly. Put receipts in secure files. 5. Make it a habit to review transactions on bank statements and credit card statements.

6. Check your credit reports for any new and unauthorized cards or accounts that have been added under your name. 7. If you discover any unauthorized charges or new accounts, report them right away. These are just a few steps that you can take. Identity theft is more common than we think, and every two seconds, there is a new ID theft. What is even more disconcerting is that over $18 billion has been stolen due to it, and 16% of consumers with breached social Security numbers become victims? There is also another great way to protect yourself and that is with an Identity Theft Protection policy. At GEICO, you have full time protection through Prevention, Detection and Resolution. If you become a victim, they have dedicated resolution specialists who will work on your behalf and handle the administrative tasks to help you resolve the crime. Their team will monitor your credit activity with all three-Credit reporting agencies for suspicious activity or changes to your file. Additionally, you will also have Phishblock warnings, Identity monitoring, Wallet Protection, Protection while traveling and more. Why would you want to put your identity at risk when you can protect yourself for as low as $7.99 a month? GEICO wants to make sure everything you have is protected. If you would like more information, stop by your local GEICO office located at 2735 Erie Boulevard E, or call them at 315-4792886. Did you know that they have eight agents there to take care of all of your needs? Start your year off right. Happy New Year!

Why Do I Need Reading Glasses for the Menu?

Smaller font size and dim lighting make for a challenging night out

R

By: Lisa Beach

ecently, my husband Kevin and I went out to dinner sans teens, a special event in itself. We decided to forego our usual Tex-Mex spot in favor of a Spanish restaurant offering great tapas. This translates to a quieter, dimmer, adults-only atmosphere conducive to lingering over our meal, sharing a glass of wine and not issuing please-chew-with-yourmouth-closed reminders. With Spanish murals and soft guitar music as our romantic backdrop, we sat at our table, picked up our menus and tried to focus on the 6-point-font-sized list of appetizers. We perused the menu for a few minutes before one of us (probably me) finally said, “I can’t see a darn thing. Why do they have to make the type so small?” I held the menu far enough away to be in another ZIP code while Kevin adopted his best Robert De Niro face as he tried to discern what camerones al ajillo means. “Is this in Spanish . . . or can we really just not see . . . or both?” he asked. Let There Be Light After struggling for a few more minutes, we cast pride aside and Kevin reached for his reading glasses while I whisked out my credit-card size magnifier that fits in my wallet. (Good God, do I really own a credit-card size magnifier?)

46

WOUNY • SEPT/OCT 2018

I leaned in toward the votive candle for an extra 2 watts hoping not to catch the menu on fire, although the extra light from the flames would have helped. Meanwhile, Kevin broke out his iPhone flashlight app. With the added luminosity and 2x magnification, we were ready to order. When the waiter arrived with some water, we questioned him about croquetas, patas a la brava, and other yummy things we usually don’t get to eat because of our finicky teens’ pizza-and-taco-based dining options. Our waiter described these delicacies in detail as we stared at him with rapt attention, but not exactly able to understand what he was saying (just a little bit because I can’t hear, I swear). Hesitatingly, I asked, “So, these are spicy potatoes?” The waiter nodded. Trying to summon his best high school Spanish, Kevin ordered the potato thing, some empanadas and (we hoped) the shrimp appetizer, camerones al ajillo. Praying we didn’t just order squid (calamares) with Kevin’s rusty Spanish, we concentrated on the wine list, with a font size that was even smaller than the appetizer list. Not wanting to delay the quick delivery of wine to our table, I abandoned hope of deciphering the menu and just ordered some merlot, hoping it didn’t cost $20 a glass. The waiter said

something else and paused, perhaps waiting for my response. Not wanting to ask for the third time already, “Can you please say that again?” I looked at him, nodded and smiled. Then he looked at me, nodded and smiled, now knowing that I pretty much couldn’t hear a word he just said. Challenged by a Micro-Font The food was fabulous, and we enjoyed the rest of our dinner without a hitch. And then the bill came. The pale-gray-on-white-paper bill – again with the micro-font. We panicked because we couldn’t see the total. And if we couldn’t see the total, how could we leave a tip? We huddled together like a small football team trying to remember the playbook. “Did the shrimp cost $13 or $18? I can’t tell if that’s a 1 or a 7, can you? Didn’t we end up ordering two spicy potato dishes?” This felt like a nightmarish adult version of an algebra class word problem: If we each ordered one glass of wine at $12 each and we’re leaving the restaurant at 9 p.m. traveling east on the highway at 45 mph … We started to break out in a sweat as we noticed the waiter come by twice to see if we were ready to pay. In desperation, we took out the iPhone flashlight again, causing the other diners to turn and glare at whatever was killing the ambience in the room. How embarrassing! Quick turn it off ! Turn it off ! We whipped out our cash, handed it to the waiter and scurried out with our eyes averting the others, like two teens caught making out in the back seat of their dad’s Ford Fusion. We caught our breath in the parking lot — from the scurrying — and agreed that our next date night needed to be less stressful. We made a pact to choose the restaurant based not on type of cuisine or location or even what Groupon we haven’t used, but on which one has the better overhead lighting. “I would have girls regard themselves not as adjectives but,

AS NOUNS.” - Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Finding your voice is not the easiest thing to do when you’re an adult and can be even more intimidating when you’re a young girl. We all want to fit in and feel like we belong, and yet, when we see or feel something that isn’t quite right, it can be unnerving to raise our hands and speak out. There is an inherent fear that our thoughts will not be welcomed by others, or worse that we will be shunned. Thoughts are powerful when they are articulated and discussed with others. What a relief it is when you finally learn that your ideas are not only welcomed but embraced or perhaps even celebrated. The seed of a movement begins with simple thoughts that are shared with others and nurtured into a series of persuasive actions that literally can change the world.

Did you know? The sunflower was a symbol of the Women’s Suffrage Movement!

At our second annual Carrying the Torch: Girl Scout Convention on Women’s Rights this October 6-7 in Seneca Falls, NY, girls and young women will come together in an interactive, exciting environment to learn how to find and use their voices on matters important to them.

Much like the women who formulated the Declaration of Sentiments, a document which outlined the rights that American women should be entitled to as citizens, girls coming together can share their concerns and learn how to take action on matters that resonate deeply for their generation. Like the women who convened in 1848 in Seneca Falls, girls from across our state will have an opportunity to explore issues that affect them personally and to decide how best to act on them through civic engagement. This year’s convention has been planned to provide a rich environment of learning by doing. Saturday, girls of all ages will work on the Global Action Award and acquire skills in situational awareness and self-defense moves with lessons from a retired female state police officer. We’ll all collaborate and paint pieces to celebrate the suffrage movement. Our partners at the Women’s Rights National Historical Park will have all of their properties open for visitors to stop in and learn about the pioneering women who led the suffrage movement. Friends of the Park will run a trivia program about the birth of the movement. The National Women’s Hall of Fame will be open for girls to discover the many significant contributions made by American women in diverse fields ranging from medicine, science and athletics—including our own Girl Scouts founder, Juliette Gordon Low. Many visiting troops from across the state and beyond will camp Saturday evening at Cayuga Lake State Park. We can expect lots of stories and new friendships to be kindled by the campfires. On Sunday, after gathering for a

17 Global Action Goals

non-denominational service and breakfast, we’ll hear from dynamic speakers who spun their passions and concerns for others into work that is challenging and fulfilling. Girls will learn how voting works and have an opportunity to use ballots to cast their own votes for change. Carrying the Torch is open to the public. Details and tickets are available at gsnypenn.org/torch. We hope you’ll join us as we commemorate the 101st anniversary of women’s suffrage in New York State while celebrating how girls of today carry the torch of equal rights forward through their own civic engagement. yracuse native Carmen Emmi is working in the ultracompetitive LA film industry as a director and cinematographer. At only 23, he was hired to work as the sole director of photography on the James Franco film Don Quixote: The Ingenious Gentleman of La Mancha (2015), which stars not only Franco, but other respected actors such as Carmen Argenziano (The Godfather Part II, Swordfish), Saturday Night Live alum Horatio Sanz, Luis Guzman (Carlito’s Way) and Venezuelan heartthrob Reinaldo Zavarce, or “Peche” to his fans across Latin America. The film, which has not yet been released, was a project for a directing class taught by Franco at the University of Southern California. “It was challenging,” said Emmi, “because I had to work with 10 student directors to develop the film. But seeing how they worked together to combine their different styles and visions into one voice—it was a really a great experi-

According to Emmi, it was his first time working closely with an actor who was a household name, but he found the experience to be surprisingly unintimidating. “To be honest, he [Franco] was so down to earth, and a very passionate about the filmmaking process. He taught me a lot about the arc of a character within a scene, and showed me how to use every scene to move the story forward. He also taught me how important it is to encourage improv, because a lot of that ends up in the movie, and it just makes for a more creative and collaborative atmosphere on set.” Emmi has worked on many other projects, but it was Tina for President, a short film he directed for his senior thesis at USC, that really got noticed. A story about an unpopular, bullied girl in middle school who runs for class president and finds self-acceptance along the way, it was

an official selection of both the 2013 Syracuse International Film Festival and the Sarasota Film Festival, won Best Picture and Best Actress in the 2013 Southern California Business Film Festival, and was the Audience Choice Winner of the 2013 National Film Festival for Talented Youth. This past January, Tina was one of 30 feature, documentary, and short films that “address women’s leadership in real life and the fiction world” screened at the 2014 Athena Film Festival: A Celebration of Women and Leadership in New York City. More recently, he completed work on a film he wrote and directed, The Forrest Boys, about two brothers struggling to come to terms with life and each other. “I felt that in this movie, like in Tina for President, I had something to say, but that I didn’t want to be preachy about it. One of the brothers, the main character, is gay,

What does it take to make it in Hollywood? If you ask Syracuse native Carmen Emmi, it all comes down to this: hard work and “blessings in disguise.” and I wanted to touch on that without it becoming the focus of the movie. The underlying message is that we all are not that different from each other, and we all deal with the same issues, and frankly we all could be a little nicer to each other,” he said. “But, as a filmmaker, my first instinct is to entertain, and so that message is there, but there’s a lot of other elements there too, funny situations, and stuff we can all relate to. Ultimately I try to put people in a situation in which they find themselves identifying with the outcast—I can’t help but love the underdog.” Emmi added that what really made Forrest Boys

special to him was that it was shot entirely in Syracuse. “ I love my hometown,” he said, “and Syracuse is also just a great place to shoot a movie. For instance, there’s a scene in Forrest Boys that I shot at Nichols grocery in Liverpool. You can’t find many mom and pop, privately-owned places like that in LA. It’s hard to get that small-town feeling there unless you create it artificially in a studio. Also, in Syracuse you can ‘cheat’ a lot of locations—downtown Syracuse could be filmed to look like any city location, and the countryside could cheat to be anywhere in rural America. And there is nothing like the atmosphere here, especially in the winter. It’s just really difficult to generate

that kind of vibe or realism on a set in LA.” Emmi is currently submitting the short film to festivals, including South by Southwest in Austin, where he hopes it will get noticed. “The dream would be to develop it into a feature length film here in LA, but shoot it at home in Syracuse. I think nothing beats being home, and being able to work in an area that I know so well because I grew up there—I see it differently than people who are just visiting. I want people to see it the way I see it.”

Carrying on the legacy of

Lucille Ball

One of our favorite issues was featuring the birth place and history of Lucille Ball. Just last month her hometown of Jamestown, NY opened a new 37,000 sq ft National Comedy Center. Executive Director, Journey Gunderson shares that more than 50 exhibits will allow guests to attempt cartooning, comedy writing, and live stand-up. There’s also a faux pie fight, and holograms of comedians. This is a trip worth taking! WOUNY • SEPT/OCT 2018

ong before hand-held electronic devices and color television, one woman dared to break down barriers and entertain audiences with a powerful blend of physical comedy and quick comedic wit. Decades later, the legacy of I Love Lucy star Lucille Ball (1911-1989), still lives on today. At the Lucy-Desi Center for comedy in Ball’s hometown of Jamestown, New York, visitors can travel back in time to explore television sets, memorabilia and much more. Women of Upstate New York Magazine recently asked Executive Director Journey Gunderson about the center and its annual comedy festival, whose special guest on August 1 will be Jerry Seinfeld (tickets are on sale beginning Feb. 9). Q: For people who don’t know, how did the Lucy-Desi Center for Comedy come about and what makes it so special? A: The Lucy Desi Center for Comedy came about after the Arts Council in Jamestown asked Lucille Ball in the late eighties about the celebration of her legacy. She said that while she understood Jamestown wanted to have a museum attraction, she preferred her legacy be celebrated in the form of living,

breathing comedy – in the form of an annual comedy festival, a focus on the development of the comedic arts, and making Jamestown a destination for the celebration of comedy. The first Lucille Ball Comedy Festival began in 1991 and the museum opened in 1996. The early nineties saw Ellen Degeneres, Paula Poundstone, Ray Romano, Lewis Black and more perform in her honor. In 2015, Jerry Seinfeld will headline the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival in Jamestown, and 2014 saw Jay Leno, Tom Cotter and a total of 25 comedic performers and artists. What makes Jamestown unique is the mix of celebrating comedy and the Lucy-Desi legacy through a nostalgic lens, while presenting the best of contemporary comedy as well. All of this culminates with a larger initiative we’re developing to open as soon as 2016 to embody Ball’s vision for Jamestown: the first National Comedy Center and center for the celebration of the comedic arts. Q: What are some of the interesting items people can see in the museum? A: We have seven Emmy Awards including Ball’s for Best Actress in a Comedy Series,

HAND CRAFTED, NATURAL & MAKING IT RIGHT!

Rick & Jeremy Reina

R

ick and Jeremy Reina are doing just that…making things right, and they’re making things, right? Yes to both! Since 2003, the Reinas have dedicated themselves to provide Central New York with the purest, environmentally and animal-friendly bath and body products. They have perfected centuries-old soap making traditions they learned in France, as well as premium vegetable oils and pure essential oils, eliminating chemical detergents and synthetic fragrances. There are many choices too, for the many vegans living in our area. “My husband and I have definitely found our niche,” said Rick Reina. “After many years of working in the wholesale music industry, and retail industry, I knew the only investment I wanted to make was in myself. Initially, I was moving in the direction of law school. However, after school

62

By: Kristen Penfield loans were building quickly, I considered beginning my own company, after I graduated,” he added. And that, he did. Reina knew the need for environmentally safe soaps existed. He had seen a few in shops and online, but all of them were quite expensive. He knew he could create a better soap, for less money…so he began researching and experimenting. The hard work and dedication paid off. With a simple, small list of ingredients and even homemade equipment, the Reinas began creating batches, finally finding the magic one. Seventeen other versions were left behind…a star was born. Their 1920’s bungalow home in the Westcott neighborhood of Syracuse would become their operation’s center. Reina said, “In the beginning, we were selling only to the wholesale market. Many stores in CNY invested in our products,

such as Seven Rays Bookstore, The Syracuse Real Food Coop, Deal & Company Florists and Natur Tyme were our very first customers.” News was traveling fast about their products, and people wanted to get their hands (or wash them) with their soaps. Rick and Jeremy began selling at the Central New York Regional Market, the Downtown Farmer’s Market in Syracuse and other markets in Baldwinsville, Manlius, Auburn and Oswego. “We were quickly expanding and running out of space in our home,” said Reina. “We moved to a larger space in the suburbs of Syracuse, but outgrew that area too, in three short years,” he added. Advertising of our product and word-of-mouth began to spread rapidly. That landed them in their current location in a quaint, refur-

bished factory building on Syracuse’s Near Westside. The stunning, peaceful surroundings is home to their retail store as well as production of their products. An expansion of products in which they still make from scratch; a large difference from many other retail stores and online. Reina stated, “We are very particular about keeping it homegrown and local. We use only our own recipe and very high-quality raw ingredients without the high price.”

explained. Their retail store boasts locally made jewelry, art, woodwork, glasswork, antiques, and more. When you step inside the doors, you immediately take in the aroma of lavender,

citrus and patchouli. Stop in and discover the many soap blends and other great items they offer in their store located at 226 Hawley Avenue, Syracuse. syracusesoapworks.com

Reina said, “We love the location of where we are now. We like the vibrancy of the city and safety of where we are on Hawley Avenue in Syracuse. It has convenient offstreet parking, and we are close to Laci’s Tapas Bar, which brings many people our way that may not have known where we were located.” He added, “There is a concentration of businesses in our area, and more and more people are coming to enjoy us and our neighbors. The city of Syracuse is definitely making a comeback.” It is without a doubt that mainstream consumers have become more health conscious. They are more aware of what they are eating, desire healthier options, as well as what they are putting on their body each day in their soaps and lotions. They realize that natural products are better for their body unlike the chemicals such as phenoxyethanol, aluminum, formaldehyde, dioxins and more that are in so many products. And with everyday stress at an all-time high, the mere fragrance of their soaps, lotions and candles can reduce anxiety and welcome relaxation. The soaps that they make are naturally fragrant and are great for your skin. “Jeremy and I have a good rhythm right now and want to keep our balance,” Reina said. And quite a balance they have! To say that Reina and his husband have energy is an understatement. When they are not making their soaps, candles, lotions, butter and lip balms, they build, remodel, re-purpose, and even make plush, beautiful socks from their vintage loom they have brought back to life - amazing talent. Rick and Jeremy know they are certainly not alone when it comes to talent. Syracuse Soapworks at Hawley-Green opened their doors to many local artists and artisans from New York State. “We wanted to feature other local items and make them available to our customers,” Reina

rtist Cynthia Schmidt was on the very first cover of By: Audrey R. Levinson Women of Upstate New York in December of 2013. She is the inventor of The Cranky Cat. Many see her paintings of these whimsical cats at pop up well attended art shows like the show that takes place every summer in Columbus Circle, Syracuse, NY and Plowshares, in November at Nottingham High School. Cynthia is always with them of course. You will find that her booth has more than just paintings of these kitties on paper. You can buy trivets, cards, framed prints and the like. There are many businesses around the country that carry The Cranky Cat Collection as well. A few years ago, the Bradford Exchange Catalogue contacted her and wanted to print her cats on checks to be put into the catalogue for sale. Cindy, although a bit skeptical at first, decided to go for it. Today she’s selling her Cranky Cat designs on not only checks and checkbook covers but key chains, small zippered purses, compacts, eye glass cases and Jackets. More importantly, she loves creating her amusing, comical, mischievous, fantastic cats. She said that color is probably the most important thing to her, and loves to create unique color combinations for her cats. She is so good at making these characters play from her imagination. She creates cats for the different seasons and holidays. She has them getting into all kinds of kitty trouble and as we all know cats are curious and trouble is their middle name. They are adorable and affordable. Cynthia was watching her cats play and enjoyed how they put their ears down when bothered (probably by another kitty), That was something that sparked Cynthia’s creativity. Cynthia is part of a co-op of artists at Lakeside Artisans in Oswego, NY. She said she loves being a part of this group because she really enjoys the camaraderie she has with all the other artists and working with the customers who come in to explore all the wonderful art there. Cynthia continues to create and participate in many art shows on the east coast. The women of upstate New York will always be a group of women with stories that teach us, empower us, show us and astound us. I have been so very fortunate to be able to write about the artists in Upstate New York through this publication. I want to Thank Mary McCandless for giving me the unique opportunity to write about artists. It has been an incredible learning experience for me to be allowed and welcomed into artist’s homes and studios to talk about what I have in common with them, a passion for being visually expressive. Every single woman whom I interviewed has extraordinary talent not only artistic talent but qualities that coincide with the creative mind. They are all such genuine people. I will remember every one of them with great reverence for what you bring to these towns in Upstate NY. There are so many wom

en artists whom I never got to meet. However, I have been so lucky to have even scratched the surface by bringing their stories to our readers. I hope that the readers will continue to support the arts. It’s very important to maintain a culture if ingenuity to not only be able to express ourselves, a form of communication, but also to use the creative mind for problem solving on a positive scale. Thank you readers I have enjoyed bringing an array of interesting painters, sculptors, ceramicists, etc., in hopes that you understand and make your own discoveries of the next piece of art you come across. They say that the average person spends three seconds looking at a piece of art. My advice is to take your time. Look deeper and question why? You may be pleasantly surprised at what you come up with.

Core Values W

hat are your core values? Have you really stopped to think about it? Who or what has influenced them? These are all questions we should ask ourselves. I have thought about it and here are a few of mine: Inspiration, Health, Family, Honesty, Integrity and compassion. Throughout our lives, there may be people who help set the foundation of these values to build upon. My mother and grandmother did that for me. My grandmother was firm but loving and her heart as big as the universe. She passed those traits down to my mom who although had a hard life, she gave to us kids what she could. She taught me that life is tough, and nothing is handed to you. It was challenging for her; she had to raise seven children alone, that in itself is a feat. She had to be a mother and a father. I realized that you have to rise above hard times and see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Mom used her humor, her gift of gab and her love of socializing to keep her strong. These are two ladies who helped set

my foundation. Oh there is one other person who was a huge influence, Art Cottet. Mr. Cottet was my boss for many years at Cottet Welding Supply. He was a strong headed no-nonsense kind of guy, and many employees were afraid to approach him. I too, in the beginning was a bit taken back when he would yell at someone. However, as time went on I could see that he was strict because he was a perfectionist and doing things right meant being successful. Like many of us when we start a new job, we are somewhere at the bottom, and overtime Art saw something in me that made him want to teach me every aspect of his business. Over the years, I went from accounts payable to helping him manage the entire company from payroll to journal entries and two additional companies. I had an office right across from his, and fondly recall the times that he would have a question or need something and would yell to me to come in his office. I thought “oh no what did I do?” So, I would rush in thinking I am in trouble, but it turned out, he just wanted me to read what was on a piece of paper or ask me for a cup of coffee. His eyesight was not

so good, and I became his second set of eyes. Many times when he yelled, Mary, I would come running in and say, “Why are you yelling at me”? He would laugh and say, I’m not yelling. I learned quickly that he meant business and under his tough dexterity was a wonderful person, my teacher, friend, and father figure whose great knowledge taught me well. In many of my own stories that I have shared in the magazine I wanted to bring “food for thought” and to share with you a piece of me. If you could read about my core values then maybe it would help you to recognize yours. It is my belief that our lives should be about continuous improvement; trial and error so to speak. On the pages to follow are some of my stories, and if you missed them, well here they are. So remember, always trust your instincts rarely are they wrong. Be open to learning, and take what the world has to offer. You may not need all of it, but take what will make you a better person.

History Repeating itself, Should it?

I

By: Mary McCandless

t is said that history repeats itself, and if it does, why does it take so long? There are some things in history that I think many of us would not want to have repeated. For instance, the volcanic eruption that destroyed Pompeii, the destruction of Rome and some other terrible events that occurred in early history. Nevertheless, when it comes to technology, we are surprisingly very slow to capture it from ancient history. One very interesting example is the Antiythera mechanism that was found in 1901 from a sunken Roman boat. Created by the Greeks; The Antiythera mechanism was carbon dated and researchers found that it dates back to about 150 BC. This device is what we would probably call a modern-day clock with 37 gear wheels, it was used to track movements of the moon and sun. The first geared clock was not invented until the 1600s. Pretty impressive! It is amazing some of the inventions that were made over 2,000 years ago, but surprising that much of it was lost in time and only to resurface 2,000 years later. Some of these inventions that go back even further, was the use of steam to heat wood so that it can be shaped, brick ovens for cooking, or concrete that withstood the test of time to make ports for ships. Did you know that Hero of Alexandria was an engineer and mathematician in Alexandria, who created the first vending machine, stand alone fountains? He also created a vessel that with heat and displaced water along with ropes would open and close temple doors! Amazing. (history.com) When I read about what was created thousands of years ago, I couldn’t help but wonder, “What happened to all of this knowledge?” Why did we lose it and why did it take so long to catch up to us? We were not using steam to its fullest extent, and vending machines have only been in around since the 18th century. For the most part, we are still a very primitive society. There seems to be a 2,000 year gap, and instead of forging ahead in history with much of the technology used from ancient times, we somehow reverted back and had to start over.

Could it be that during that time no one had an interest for the past? It is confusing. I often wonder, why we did not question the earlier use of inventions, and why did we stop using what worked? So fast-forward to present day, why are we in a space station that just circles the earth and not traveling to Alpha Centauri by now? Hmmm. If we take this same logic and apply it to what we do as people, sometimes we cannot get away from the past. They say old habits die hard, and yet we repeat the past. I am guilty of that myself. When I find myself doing something I did in the past that did not quite work out, I stop myself. I think about why the old ways really do not work for me and change them. The key is to stick to it. The same can be true for relationships. We stay in relationships that are not healthy, but why? Is it because it is safe or comfortable for the moment? It usually does not last, and things go back to the way they were. Did we see our parents or others stay together because history says that is what should be done? We try to convince ourselves that it will get better and just wait it out, but that never happens. It can be a scary thing to make a drastic change to your life. It is not easy, and it does get better! More importantly if it is going to help you not repeat history and make your life what you want, taking that new road is not a bad idea. Our lives, our history should be of our own making, happy and fulfilling. It should be that legacy you leave behind whether it is for your children, family or friends. Our lives should not be just dealing with a situation, it should be about forging ahead and never looking back. It is about changing our history and not repeating it. Also, change is not failure it is progression to be allow you to get to where you need and want to be. Take a look at your history, your life’s journey, is it the path you want to be on? If not, change it and make new history.

REINVENTED

R

By Mary McCandless

einvented, a word that is defined in many ways. It is described as a remaking or a makeover, to re do. I never really understood why people would use that word. I have reinvented myself ! I would always wonder, “what is wrong with your previous self ?”Did you need to add a new arm, leg or torso? Was the previous one no longer functional? I have found that we use that term loosely when we want to change what we do,whether it is our life or our job. There is no reason to reinvent yourself. Your life was given to you so that you can branch out and grow, just as a tree would. There are many who feel that what they are currently doing may not be what they want, or it did not work out for them. That does not mean you are a failure or were not good enough. It simply means that there is so much out there that you should experience. Challenge yourself. We are meant to grow every day of our lives. Where is it written in stone that we can only go in one direction? Who said that the career we chose had to follow us throughout our lives? It is my opinion that society has dictated our life path. Is that what your legacy is about? I would hope not. Happiness should be at the top of your life list. You can obtain and maintain it by being who you want to be. If you try something and decide it is not what you wanted to do, then do something else. There is no need to “reinvent” yourself. You are not a failure or stupid. You are courageous and confident for doing it.

It is only another branch that you have added to your life tree. By doing this you are enhancing your knowledge and life experience. I also hear some say, “ I am too old to do that!” Again, is this something that was ingrained in us that at a certain age, we cease to function? Absolutely not! I have a philosophy and hope that you will take on one of your own. It is to be happy, if something does not work, try something new. Experience life, take those challenges and be true to who you are and what you want to do.If you are kind and try to be the best person you can be each day and take on whatever you want, your life is complete. Live it, be what you are, grow and branch off just as a tree does. So go and add more branches to your tree. It is easier than you think. Draw a trunk, which will represent you then draw a branch for everything that you have done so far. Now take a look at your tree and determine what new branches are going to grow. The new branch will represent that new growth in your life. Win or lose it is your one and only tree, so grow it the way you want it to grow. Learn new things and blossom. You deserve it!

Relaxation may be one of the first reasons why people want to experience a hot tub. The effects of hydrotherapy are enhanced when used regularly. Stress is reduced naturally when the body is stimulated through massage, exercise and other means. These activities release neurotransmitters called endorphins, which assist the body in handling pain, stress and emotions. Warm water massage is one way to release endorphins, increasing pleasure and relieving stress. Headaches can be reduced as water jets in hot tubs and whirlpools help to dilate blood vessels, increasing blood flow. Scientific studies have also shown a balance between the autonomic nervous system and warm water therapy. This can lead to a strong sense of well-being and the ability to focus. Additionally, hot-tub therapy may alleviate mental anxiety. By taking time out to breathe deeply and refocus your mind while you soak, you may yield an energizing effect that will build from within, and you will better be able to face the mental and physical challenges of the day. Sleep may come faster and longer to those who take advantage of hydrotherapy.

The National Sleep Foundation reports that soaking in a hot tub before bed can ease the transition into deeper, more comfortable sleep. The relaxing sensation you get from time spent soaking helps release tension and starts you on the path to a restful slumber. Once you’re immersed in warm water, your body’s temperature is raised, which increases blood circulation. When you leave the hot tub, your core temperature lowers slowly, signaling to the body that it’s time to sleep.

moving, can restore and preserve flexibility and strength,” which “protects joints against further damage, “it improves your coordination, endurance and your ability to perform daily tasks.” When jets are used, the massage relaxes muscles, ligaments and tendons and stimulates the release of endorphins— the body’s natural pain relief mechanism. The water’s buoyancy relieves stress on joints and muscles to encourage the range of motion, flexibility and movement.

Rejuvenate... If you have been in an accident, or had recent surgery, recovery time can be improved in a hot tub. Soaking, floating and using buoyancy to practice mobility exercises, along with stretching affected area(s) will allow skin and muscles to loosen and relax. The body naturally heals damaged areas through improved blood flow to injuries. The increased flow and oxygen will also speed the healing process. Medical professionals suggest warmth to increase circulation and assist healing. Hot tubs equipped with soothing jets, also assist cells and tissues to regenerate.

An Arthritis Foundation publication related to spas, pools and arthritis states, “Regular sessions also protect your joints from further damage.” For the millions of Americans with Arthritis and other joint problems, hot tubs provide relief by loosening muscles and reducing stiffness. Areas of the body which have suffered stress or trauma also respond well to hot water and massage jets. Additionally, those with chronic pain from Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue syndrome, Athletes, and accident victims also find relief from its use. Migraines, tendonitis, back and neck pain – all can be helped with the regular use of your hot tub.

Reinvigorate...Arthritis affects more than 70 million people in the USA alone. According to the Arthritis Foundation, time in a hot tub creates a helpful environment for relieving arthritis pain and stiffness. Using water exercise to “keep joints
