Introduction to Fly Fishing

May 1 & 3 (T, TH) 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., $25 Fly fishing is generally thought of as

a sport best enjoyed in the setting of mountain streams catching trout or salmon. While these waters are great places to fly fish, you can catch a variety of fish and have the same great fly fishing experiences in your local warm water lakes and ponds. This class helps the beginning or novice fly fisher learn the basic principles associated with fly fishing. Learn more about the equipment necessary for getting started, how to properly set up a fly rod, become familiar with the basic principles of fly casting, and understand the use of flies and common fly fishing strategies necessary for catching fish in streams, lakes, and ponds. This class is required in order to register for Principles of Fly Casting.

May 2 (W) 1:00 – 5:00 p.m., $60 Instruction of basic information in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid for first responders and initiators to incidents. This class results in a basic twoyear certification for the skills required to perform CPR and first aid skills in the field.

Passport Passengers Passport Passengers provides an opportunity for senior citizens in our community to come together and learn about countries around the world. Come and share your experiences of your personal travels and learn from those of others. Experience snacks and activities unique to each country. May 9 (W) 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., $60 Employee engagement is the emotional attachment that workers feel to their workplace, and is highly impacted by the leadership a supervisor provides to his/her employees. This training will offer a better understanding of employee engagement and how it impacts productivity, turnover, safety, customer service, and team morale. Supervisors will leave with techniques for

enhancing employee engagement and buy-in into an organization’s vision and mission.

Principles of Fly Casting

May 9 (W) 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., $20 If you thought casting a fly line was too complicated for you to master, you’ll be surprised to learn that with the knowledge of a few basic principles, a little personal instruction, and some practice, anyone can become proficient enough at fly casting to enjoy the sport of fly fishing. In this class, we review the basic principles of fly casting, learn common fly casting techniques used in a variety of fly fishing situations, and devote time to personal instruction and casting practice. Participants must bring a properly set up and functional fly rod to class for personal instruction and practice. To experience maximum learning from this class, the participant should also have completed the Introduction to Fly Fishing class. Class size is limited in order to provide individualized attention and instruction.

JUNE Pickleball

May 9 (W) 6:00 − 8:00 p.m., FREE! Terry Carpenter Center Pickleball is a racket sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Two, three, or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball (similar to a wiffle ball) over a net. The sport shares some features of other racket sports; the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, net and rules are similar to tennis with a few modifications. Get an excellent workout while having a great time! The game is great for both novice and experienced sports participants. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience an excellent exercise activity, meet new friends, and have fun!

Recognizing Drug Impairment

May 10 (TH) 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Nebraska Safety Council Members: $95 Non-Members: $140 Substance abusers are five times more likely than non-abusers to injure themselves or others in the workplace.

This class will cover policy, procedure, and regulations under both OSHA and D.O.T., specifically the requirements set out by the D.O.T. The ability to protect its information systems from impairment or even theft is essential to success. Implementing effective security measures will not only offer liability protection, it will also increase efficiency and productivity. With our cybersecurity workshop, participants will discover the fundamentals of cybersecurity as well as the methods that should be implemented to make sure their computer systems are protected.

All About Underground Sprinklers May 21 & 23 (M, W) 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., $20 Applied Technology Building In this class we will dive into home based lawn and garden care sprinkler systems. We’ll look at the different types and what type may work best for your application. We’ll look at some of the different tools used in building and maintaining systems as well as how to replace broken heads, how to adjust patterns, and why a drip based system may be great for your gardens. Then, we will be off to the lab for some hands on practice of our new found knowledge!

Learn the importance of and how to change a furnace filter, swap light switches, repair a hole in the drywall, and find the best tools for the job. We demystify toilet leaks and discuss whether fixing a faucet or replacing it is right for you. Get to know your house and how to take care of it by joining your friends and signing up for this fun, new class. Prepare to get dirt on your hands and gain knowledge that you can use!

Driver's Education

May 30 – 31 & Jun 4 – 8 (M – F) 8:00 – 11:00 a.m., $195 This course is a state approved driver safety course for high school students ages 14 – 17. This course is not state approved for adults 18 years of age and older. Students will complete 20 hours of classroom time and drive two to five hours with a Competency Certified Instructor. Eligible students must obtain a valid learner's permit and be at least 14 years of age by October 15, 2018 to register.

Introduction to Ceramic Wheel Throwing and Hand Building

Beginning Tiling

Jun 25 & 27 (M, W) 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., $20 Applied Technology Building YOU can learn to tile! We will dive into the wonderful world of tiling. Do you have a job you want to take on in your home, or even a remodel? We'll take time to learn how to repair broken tile, and whether it should be replaced or repaired. We'll also learn the importance of properly prepping the job. After all, it has been stated that 80 percent of a job is prep, and 20 percent is tiling. Find out what products work best for different jobs. Then, we will move to the lab and put to test what we have learned!

Japanese karate and American kickboxing combine to make this camp a day kids won’t forget! Kids will be introduced to blocks, strikes, and kicks in a fun and disciplined manner. Basic Self-Defense Jun 22 (F), $12

Self-defense is something that can be learned at almost any age. Kids will learn how to escape and evade common attacks in a safe, structured environment. Common tactics of abductors and con artists will be discussed. Camp participants will also practice proven verbal skills for disarming bullies. Role play scenarios will deal with serious issues in a fun and safe environment where kids can build confidence, learn practical skills, and be introduced to concepts of honor and integrity.

Introduction to Bushidokan “The Way of the Warrior School” Jun 29 (F), $12

Bushidokan is a pioneer marial art in the U.S. It is composed of three main components: karate, judo, and jiu-jitsu. Students will learn how the striking, kicking, and grappling techniques flow together to create this well-rounded versatile martial art. Did we mention there will be sword fighting? A student favorite, sparring with foam swords is a fun and safe way to introduce students to the different aspects of martial arts competition.

Exploring Science Camps Jun 2 – Jul 28 (SA) 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. $30 per class Ages: 6th grade – 10th grade Discover the Physics of NASCAR June 2 Learn about systems of a car, how an internal combustion engine works, along with the 3D forces, drafting, down draft, and drag while racing. Not just for boys! In fact, the books we will be referencing were written by Diandra Leslie-Pelecky. Learn how cars stay on track, how the power is generated, and how science is used to maximize speed and help improve safety.

Electricity and Magnetism Fun 1 June 16

Investigate electricity and magnetism, discover what those forces are, how they interract, and why they benefit us. Build simple motors, make a battery from fruit, and use a multimeter to measure voltage. Students will be able to take home materials to make a simple motor and conduct hands-on experiments!

Electricity and Magnetism Fun 2

June 30 Explore the relationship between magnetism and electricity. Discover how and why those forces interract. Make a train from a coil of wire, battery and magnets. Experiment with multi-color LEDs and solar cells. Students will be able to take home LEDs and other components to continue experimentation.

All About Fossils July 14 Explore plant and animal fossils that are millions of years old! Discover what fossils are, how they are formed, and why they are important to understanding the earth. Learn where fossils are found and how to collect them. Students will take home several specimens to start their own collection.

Exploring Owl Pellets July 28 Dissect owl pellets to find out what they are, why owls can’t digest bones or fur, and what they do about that. Students can keep the bones they find. Often times, complete skulls are found!

Summer Camps Duct Tape Dynasty Duct tape solves everything, right? Students use duct tape to decorate jars, composition books, pencil pouches, pencils, etc. Students also create various items such as pouches, wallets, flowers, and bracelets using only duct tape.

Cupcakes are simply irresistible single servings of delicious cakes and frosting dressed up in perfect little packages. In this course, student chefs participate in a number of “challenges” to see who is the “boss’”of each challenge. Some of the challenges are individual challenges and some are group challenges.

Robotics Week

This class is sure to be a delightful experience for young chefs. Several educational skills are enhanced as they share stories, participate in cooking experiences, and learn about kitchen safety and dining etiquette. Students will have opportunities to practice math and reading skills, learn science concepts, and develop good work habits as they work cooperatively in groups. Marvelous Mosaics

Students learn about the ancient art of mosaic and learn to make their own artwork using a variety of fun materials. Students cut, glue, read, and create as they learn about how traditional and modern mosaics are made.

Just Bead it Beads, safety pins, leather, and washers! Does that sound intriguing? These are just a few of the materials you’ll explore and create with in this course. Create bracelets, rings, and necklaces for all occasions. Embellish items such as picture frames and beads.

Career Camps Week

Jun 25 – 28 (M – TH) 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. $30/day or $100/week Ages: 9 – 14 This week is dedicated to student exploration of a variety of careers such as health professionals, engineers, cosmetologists, and veterinarians. CSI: Crime Scene Investigations

Are you a sleuth? Do you want to become one? If you would like to learn more about solving crime, this is the course for you! Students meet crime-fighting professionals and learn their secrets. Students learn the art of fingerprinting, hair analysis, and other trace evidence left at the scene of the crime.

Gooey, Gross, and Green

In this course, students create things that ooze, bounce, and squish! Students take part in a number of hands-on gooey, gross, and green fun science and art projects.

Jammin’ in the Jungle

Students explore the mysteries of exotic plants and animals through beautiful books and interesting activities. Students’ learning is enhanced with several science skills including probability, biodiversity,

and horticulture. Come and join the fun of this jungle adventure! Are you a master Lego builder? Would you like to be? This course encourages students to explore their creativity and skills. Students enhance their imagination and skills as they unleash their inner Lego builder! All building levels welcomed!

Exploring K’NEX Week

Jul 30 – Aug 2 (M – TH) 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. $30/day or $100/week Ages 9 – 14 Are you familiar with “Punkin’ Chunkin’”? Build some simple machines using K’NEX building system pieces to understand the physics involved in various classes of levers. Then create your own “Chunkin’’” machine to launch projectiles, much smaller than pumpkins, in competition. We also explore with the K’NEX building system to create bridges, structures, and simple machines. By the end of the week, we will have had a competition to see who can build the lightest and strongest bridge!

Youth will be engaged and inspired with fun, visual art workshops instructed by our expert team of arts professionals. It’s a great way for students to sharpen existing skills or try something completely new. During four days of classes, they create original artwork and have a great time exploring different mediums and techniques. There will be a mini reception on Friday, June 8, 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. displaying students artwork. The registration fee includes all art materials, an art camp t-shirt, and bottled water. Please have your child wear old clothes during the art camp and arrive rested, fed, and ready to make art.
