ABOUT CEHD The College of Education and Human Development at Western Michigan University is a vital, progressive community. The college is comprised of six departments, which include Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology; Educational Leadership, Research and Technology; Family and Consumer Sciences; Human Performance and Health Education; Special Education and Literacy Studies; and Teaching, Learning and Educational Studies. Approximately 110 regular full-time faculty members serve over 2,500 undergraduate and 1,350 graduate students, with majors enrolled in programs leading to the bachelor’s, master’s, specialist’s, and doctoral degrees.

CEHD POINTS OF PRIDE WMU owes its roots to CEHD, which was founded in 1903 as a teacher’s college. WMU has grown into an internationally regarded higher education institution while maintaining a strong commitment to training teachers and school administrators. CEHD has been accredited by NCATE since 1954. CEHD started the first graduate program at WMU in 1939. CEHD has been consistently ranked by the U.S. News and World Report as one of the best education schools in the nation.

CEHD is the most significant contributor to graduate education at WMU as it consistently has had the largest graduate enrollment and produced the greatest number of graduate degrees among all the academic colleges over the past ten years. CEHD is equipped with a TeachLiveTM Lab. WMU is the first institution in the state of Michigan to host such a learning lab. CEHD has 67,250 living alumni in the world. The number accounts for about 30% of all WMU graduates.

CEHD WORKING PRIORITIES FOR THE 2015-16 ACADEMIC YEAR To stabilize and possibly increase enrollment. To develop a suite of programs that are innovative, forward-looking, and trend-setting. To enhance the reputation and brand recognition of the College of Education and Human Development and Western Michigan University. To develop learning outcomes and related assessment systems for all College of Education and Human Development programs. To seek new sources of income to accomplish the aforementioned priorities.

CEHD ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE 2014-15 ACADEMIC YEAR

Fully complied with all NCATE accreditation standards and gained continuous accreditation. Started the implementation of a strategic plan and completed a number of initiatives (such as drafted new mission and vision statements). Offered a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership in the Dominican Republic. Submitted proposals for grants and contracts for more than $14 million, receiving close to $6 million. Received the Michigan Department of Education’s re-approval of 23 programs and SPAs approval of 7 programs.

Raised more than $1.3 million through development efforts and established 5 endowed student scholarships. Developed six international partnerships and signed 6 collaborative program agreements. Developed and gained approval from MDE on 6 new programs (i.e., four new elementary majors: Integrated Sciences, Language Arts, Math and Social Studies, and two graduate certificate programs: English as Second Language and Autism Behavioral Intervention Specialist). Enhanced the relationships with local school districts (e.g., co-sponsoring 4 education forums, working on joint grant submissions).

CEHD WORKING INITIATIVES IN THE 2015-16 ACADEMIC YEAR

To create a Ph.D. in Education and Human Development program. To develop and launch a future educators program to cultivate students from low socio-economic status into the teaching profession. To explore and develop at least one condensed graduate certificate.

CONTINUING THE TRADITION OF SUCCESS To implement a number of enrollment strategies: To develop one or more accelerated master’s programs in the college. To develop one or more dual enrollment programs with community colleges. To promote the established 3+2 and 1+1 collaborative programs in China. To develop a MAT in Chinese program in collaboration with Beijing Language and Cultural University. To develop at least one 3+2 program with Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) in the Dominican Republic. To develop three 2+2 transfer articulation agreements with community colleges. To develop at least one 3+2 program with the University of Malaya in Malaysia.

CITY OF KALAMAZOO Kalamazoo is the sixth largest metropolitan area in Michigan and is situated just 40 miles away from South Haven, a popular beach town located on Lake Michigan, and 20 miles away from Bittersweet Ski Resort. Kalamazoo is known for having an urban feel with a small town vibe. The city is famous for many things such as being the original home of Gibson Guitars, and Bell’s Brewery. In addition, Kalamazoo houses many major corporations and industries, including Stryker, Pfizer, Borgess Health Alliance, and Bronson Hospital. Collaborations with these businesses, as well as the Portage and Kalamazoo Public Schools, allow for an array of internship opportunities for CEHD students. According to a 2011 national study done by the Daily Beast, Kalamazoo was ranked No. 24 among the best cities in the U.S. for recent college graduates.
