Dear Academy Family: Nine months ago we broke ground on our new stateof-the-art, 14-acre campus, and in less than six months the building will be complete. We’re beginning a new chapter in our long history of molding the minds, characters and neshamot of generations of Jewish leaders. It’s hard to imagine that after so many years of planning that we’re almost there… but we are! Every time I visit the construction site, I feel the thrill of living a dream – the dream of making a difference in our world by offering our students the finest Jewish and general education. We are proud of our history and excited about our future as we move the dreams of our founders forward. We are proud of our students who, both in school and beyond, excel in academics and in derech eretz. We are proud to offer a vision of Modern Orthodoxy that is true to our mesorah and to halacha, while seeking the opportunities that come with our modern times. That’s why, with an eye to the future and faithful to our past, this year we have taken important steps to prepare our students for their roles in the 21st century. We’ve increased opportunities in science and math, inaugurating our first STEM course (science, technology, engineering and math) – with three STEM courses in the coming year. We’ve improved the technology in our building to support both collaboration between students as well as our new 1:1 device initiative. We’ve redesigned our tefillah experience by offering our students choices of minyanim from the Kollel minyan to a meditative

minyan. We’ve created regular student town hall meetings to give our students a greater voice in what happens in school. We’ve worked hard to improve our responsiveness and the experience that everyone has as soon as they enter the doors of our building. And there is so much more to come – from technology to new Talmud classes, partnerships with Northwestern University and with the Merkaz Halakha in Israel.

Rabbi Matanky addresses the community at our groundbreaking in November 2014

As you will read in this report, the Academy has accomplished so very much in Torah, in madda, in community service and commitment to the State of Israel. But, if you really want to see the proof of our achievements and the dreams that we aspire to fulfill, come visit the school - whether at 2828 West Pratt, or soon at 8233 North Central Park. Because the Academy, our teachers and our students are the best ambassadors of the quality education we offer.

Mr. Lester Crown, lead donor to our Capital Campaign, received a standing ovation from the 500+ people at our groundbreaking

I look forward to greeting you at school, or on Chanukah, December 13, 2015, at 10:30AM at the dedication of our new Ida Crown Jewish Academy Esformes Family Campus. B’virkat HaTorah,

Rabbi Leonard A. Matanky, Ph.D. (ICJA class of ‘76)

Most of our students, especially seniors, joined our monumental event

REFLECTIONS FROM 2014-15 This school year 5775 began like no other. Amidst a war in Israel, we opened school with a Yom Iyun, hearing from alum and Israeli Commander, Hartley Schwartz (‘11). Every student present left more connected to Israel and inspired to do his or her part in our community of Jewish people – one that feels smaller than ever when under attack.

As for our seniors, their class was accomplished in Torah learning, derech eretz, in acts of chesed and academics. But most importantly, everyone will attest to the fact that this was a class that was overwhelmingly loved by peers and staff alike. We wish our graduates mazal and hatzlacha as they head to Israel (nearly 75% of them!) and to university.

What followed was a year of tremendous growth for our students on individual levels and our school on a communal level. Most notably, this year was the culmination of years of planning and effort leading up to the groundbreaking of our new campus and the 21st Century educational strides we put into place to match our nearly completed state-of-the-art building.

This year, as every year, our students left their mark locally and nationally in academics, athletics, advocacy and student clubs.

In addition to the excitement and preparation for our upcoming move, this report highlights many of the most noteworthy accomplishments, including students’ accomplishments that rival or exceed those of any top-notch college-preparatory school in the nation:

1 senior was recognized as a U.S. Presidential Scholar, selected as one

of only two seniors from the state of Indiana

6%

of seniors were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program: 1 Finalist, 3 Commended

31% of seniors were Illinois State Scholars 100% of seniors who took the Jerusalem Exam, an advanced

test of Hebrew and Jewish knowledge, passed

53%

of seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society, Torah Chapter

36%

of seniors devoted over 250 hours of chesed to be inducted into the Deborah Katzin z”l Chesed Society

Top 20

Out of nearly 400 schools, Charlotte’s Web, ICJA’s Literary Magazine was recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English as one of the top high school literary magazines

Students learned crucial Israel advocacy skills both in and out of the classroom, joining national programs like AIPAC and Panim el Panim in Washington, D.C. and of course in our senior Israel advocacy course. Teachers incorporated more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning than ever into curricula and for the first year ever, our students joined a new STEM course taught by Dr. Rochelle Green, our director of 21 Century learning and teaching. More STEM courses are in the works for next year. A cohort of students participated in Yeshiva University’s Model UN convention where our students were once again recognized for excellence. In their quest to give back to the community, our students dedicated countless hours to chesed by raising tzedakah, working with Keshet peer buddies during school hours and peer tutoring. In athletics, our teams excelled locally and nationally as formidable competitors. Our varsity girls cross country team once again took 1st place in the IHSA Chicago Prep Conference Meet; the Lady Aces soccer team took 2nd in the Conference; the wrestlers won a hard-fought 3rd place in the YU Wittenberg Tournament; the boys’ basketball team played in the IHSA regional finals, in what was again an all-Jewish game against CJHS and then went on to win 1st place in YU’s Tier II championship.

Four seniors were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Haia Bchiri (above right) was recognized as a Finalist and (from left) Abigail Lowenstein, Tamar Grey and Audrey Fretzin were all recognized as Commended Students. We are so proud that these four are among the top students in the nation.

Senior Anat Berday-Sacks was named a U.S. Presidential Scholar from the state of Indiana. Anat, who boarded in Skokie to attend ICJA, was the only female chosen from the state and is one of 141 seniors chosen from the United States for this highest honor among high school students. This is the first time that an ICJA student was honored with this most prestigious award.

Most importantly, whether in a local or national interscholastic program, our students were recognized for their talent, character and commitment Twelve ICJA juniors were finalists and semi-finalists in the to the community. Letters About Literature contest for the State of Illinois.

12 juniors won a state-wide essay contest 3

COLLEGE READINESS ICJA continues to grow and improve. Through strategic planning, consultations with national agencies and data driven decision making, we work to make the ICJA experience more meaningful and impactful. Our graduates and alumni are proof. In survey results (below), our alumni have overwhelmingly expressed their exceptional level of college readiness after four years at the Academy. Whether it is the long day, the juggling of classes, the depth of learning and reasoning in Judaic studies or the breadth of information covered in general studies – our alumni report that they are more 80 78% than ready for their next stage of life. 70

We go to great lengths in and out of the classroom to ensure our juniors and seniors 60 present their best possible selves to college admissions departments. Academy students 50 place well above national averages in all four areas of academic testing, according to 40 the ACT measure of all four major academic areas: English composition, reading, math 30 26% and science (see graph). That’s why Academy students are recruited by and accepted to 20 the nation’s top universities and top Israel programs. Whether it’s through our Decisions college guidance course, one-on-one meetings with our guidance counselors, the wide 10 0 variety of universities that meet our students on site or even our English department’s ICJA National Average workshops on college essay writing – we take extensive steps to ensure our students are admitted to the right school for each of them. Furthermore, we actively work with students to encourage attendance at schools with a strong Jewish life, per our custom Jewish Life on Campus matrix. And, of course, once they get to college, we are confident that they are ready for the challenges ahead.

OVERALL SATISFACTION WITH ICJA

COMPARED TO ICJA PROVIDES LIKELIHOOD TO ICJA PREPARES PEERS, ICJA A HIGH QUALITY RECOMMEND ICJA FOR ISRAEL TEACHES CRITICAL EDUCATION (85% AMONG ADVOCACY THINKING (YOUNG YOUNG ALUMNI) ALUMNI ONLY)

The responses are on a scale from 1-5, with 1 being “very poorly or never” and 5 being “very strongly or decisive”

Speaking to our senior class, Tanya Gershon (‘05) summed up the benefits an ICJA education eloquently: I wish someone would have told me that despite going to a small school in the Midwest, the wealth of knowledge and study skills I learned in Ms. Sennett’s classes would put me in a position that outranked my peers at Barnard and Columbia who came from top schools all over the world. Or that AP European history would influence me to fall in love with art history... Or that going to tutorials several lunch periods a week with Mrs. Engle and editing for the Crown Prints with Ms. Goldstein would be the foundation for a prolific writing and editing career... Or that the Mishnah, Halacha and AJSP courses from Rabbi Gutstein through Rabbi Kurtz, that I sometimes took for granted, would become the essential skills for deductive reasoning and research that I conduct on a daily basis, as well as the fundamental tools to explore and question my yahadut.

PHENOMENAL AP RESULTS

Academy students took 148 Advanced Placement tests in 14 different subjects this past spring. Their results were on par with the top high schools in the nation. A score of 3 is passing and is the average score in all tests. Our students most commonly scored above a 3.

PREPARING FOR OUR MOVE After nearly a decade-long initiative to raise funds for an endowment that would include a new building for Ida Crown Jewish Academy, we were thrilled to spend the year planning our upcoming move to Skokie for January 2016. We broke ground on our new campus at 8233 Central Park Ave on Nov. 2, 2014, together with 500+ community members and supporters. Gathering for the historic occasion on a sunny, crisp day were dignitaries, including: Skokie’s Mayor George Van Dusen— who offered welcoming words to the ICJA community, State Representative Lou Lang and Michael Lorge, Corporate Council for the Village of Skokie. Lead donor Lester Crown spoke to a standing-room-only crowd on behalf of the Crown and Goodman family, mentioning how proud Col. Henry Crown—Lester Crown’s father–and and Irving Crown, Charles H. Goodman’s father-in-law would have been. He also said, “Education is the most important thing we can do as far as our future is concerned.” He went on to say, “What the Academy has done in crowded corridors and insufficient space is academically and athletically incredible.” The crowd responded with a standing ovation. Steven Landes, chairman of the Associated Talmud Torahs, recalled the rich history of ICJA, dating back to 1942 and then the 1966 groundbreaking at Pratt Blvd. Several attendees at the event were present at the groundbreaking as children. Landes also recognized the Jewish Federation’s dedication to Jewish education, saying, “No Federation in the entire Jewish world has done more to embrace and sustain Jewish education.” Lead gifts for the project were provided by the Crown and Goodman Family and Rabbi Morris Esformes through the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago’s Centennial Campaign. Also speaking was Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation President Dr. Steven B. Nasatir, whose unwavering support for the project made the dream a reality. Dr. Nasatir offered a historic perspective to the occasion and told the crowd, “It’s a great day for the entire Jewish people.”

6

Rabbi Leonard Matanky recalled his memories of the Pratt Blvd. groundbreaking, offered words of Torah and thanks to the leaders who helped ICJA reach this milestone. Finally, Rabbi Gedalia Dov Schwartz, head of the rabbinical court for the Chicago Rabbincal Council and the Beth Din of America, offered words of blessing. The campaign spanned a changing real estate market and an economic recession, making it last much longer than anticipated. The long wait makes the close of our campaign even more rewarding. The Crown-Goodman family, represented by Lester Crown and Charles H. (Corky) Goodman, led the campaign and then led a final push for fundraising with a $5.5 million matching gift challenge. This gift is in addition to the $10 million lead gift the family contributed at the campaign’s launch in 2010. In addition to our new building in Skokie, the capital campaign will more than double our school’s endowment, providing crucial scholarship funds and program support. All commitments to ICJA’s capital campaign are credited as gifts to the Jewish Federation’s Centennial Campaign. The new building will also house the Keshet High School program, providing the organization with increased space and continuing Keshet and ICJA’s long-standing relationship. We thank our partners for being the visionaries of our community’s future by contributing to ICJA’s Building Campaign and for helping us achieve a once-in-a-generation goal of building a contemporary high school for our community and strengthening ICJA’s endowment to guarantee the scholarship and financial needs of future generations. MEET OUR NEW STEM DIRECTOR THIS YEAR’S FRESHMAN CLASS OF 2018 WASN’T WAITING FOR TODAY’S TECHNOLOGY BOOM – IN 2000, THEY WERE BORN INTO IT. BY FIRST GRADE, NEARLY ALL OF THEM KNEW HOW TO “FINGER SWIPE” A CELL PHONE BEFORE THEY EVEN MASTERED THE PROPER WAY TO HOLD A PENCIL. It’s for this reason, says our Director of 21 Century Learning and Teaching Dr. Rochelle Green that more than any other generation, high school students today think holistically. With infinite knowledge at their fingertips, they glean the knowledge they seek from a constant barrage of information encountered on multiple devices at once. Asking these students to then enter the classroom, put away all their devices and compartmentalize information into eight separate subjects creates a disconnect between school and students’ everyday lives. To continue teaching today’s students for tomorrow requires new ideas and new tools. Thanks to Dr. Shelley Green, the Academy staff and administration is “thinking big” about creating new ways to prepare our students for university and careers in the 21st century. Dr. Green joined the Academy last fall after serving as division dean, program professor and STEM coordinator at Nova Southeastern University for over 20 years. During that time she started the Jewish Educators’ Program where she customized educational programs for Jewish day schools.

apparent as part of our Strategic Plan 2.0. With Dr. Green on board, we launched many exciting initiatives. Just this year, Dr. Green accomplished the following: • A weekly seminar for staff, based on the courses in pedagogy she taught at Nova • Staff professional development to use their strengths to improve the classroom by utilizing 21st century skills, selfassessments and peer reviewing • Taught our first STEM course to seniors Next year, Dr. Green plans to introduce problem-based learning where the entire school works on one problem, such as local water pollution. Solving the problem would take a varied skill set, including: science, math, engineering, thinking and writing skills, along with knowledge of history. Much of the collaboration between subjects and students that we plan to implement will come more naturally with our move next year. That space will have better technology, learning pods and collaborative areas more conducive to today’s learning needs.

Dr. Rochelle Green is pictured with science staff Dr. Andrew Seymour and Mr. Dave Newman at the National Science Teachers Association Conference in Chicago this past winter.

And yet, regardless of our curriculum developments in the future, our mission remains the same. While we may be preparing our students for a world in which our founders never could have dreamed, we continue to build phenomenal Jewish citizens who succeed in our modern world.

With students able to access so much information easily, the job of teachers today, says Dr. Green, is “to focus on less content but teach at a deeper level so that students are more thoroughly able to synthesize information.”

That being said, Dr. Green says, “This is a work in progress. The world our kids are headed into is going to be continually evolving. The careers and skill sets are constantly changing and this generation of kids has to be dynamic.”

The skills most important to impart upon today’s students are how to be creative, collaborative and communicative. They need to be able to think “glocally”–globally and locally, be able to solve problems and develop models for thinking.

She also says, “It is a great honor to take a school already so established with so many phenomenal educators and then get to tweak it into 21st century learning.”

For years, staff and administration have been working to enhance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning at the Academy through our Strategic Plan. The need for a new administrator to focus on STEM became

8

Dr. Green says throughout the year, she smiled on the way to work. “It’s like having the brightest class I’ve ever taught. I’m just so grateful to be here.”

TO CONTINUE TEACHING TODAY’S STUDENTS FOR TOMORROW REQUIRES NEW IDEAS AND NEW TOOLS.

PREPARING STUDENTS FOR 21C

BECOMING A 1:1 SCHOOL Picture a classroom where every student is using a personal device to collaborate on the school’s Google Apps Suite. Students pull up their science lab, English essay or history project and then co-create a project, review a document as a class, or peer edit work — Y all while learning how to best improve their own work. OG L The whole time, the teacher is guiding the lesson O HN C and reviewing students’ progress. TE

Through our partnership with Northwestern University, professional development, new technology and new STEM courses (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), our faculty is ensuring that our students are prepared to succeed in the future.

{ }

One of the primary ways we are incorporating STEM education into the classroom is by empowering teachers with training, support and teaching materials that are easily implemented in various topics of their current curricula. We are one of only approximately 100 schools in the Chicagoland TRADITION + 21C = SUCCESS area to work closely with Northwestern’s Office of STEM “What we have here is Education Partnerships, providing us with access to their breadth of something very unique knowledge and online tools.

– there is a tremendous commitment to be both traditional and 21st Century, so that we have so much added value.”

This spring we launched a STEM Research & Design course with Dr. Rochelle Green, our director of 21st Century Teaching and Learning, and next year we will also offer courses on electronics & telecommunications and computational thinking & coding. Dr. Rochelle Green, Computational thinking (CT) is a Director of 21C Learning and Teaching way of solving problems, designing systems and understanding human behavior that draws on concepts fundamental to computer science. It is considered one of the essential skills for today’s students in the same way that reading, writing and arithmetic has always been an essential educational skill. These courses are all an outcome of our partnership with Northwestern University – widely considered the “thought leaders” on CT. Dr. Green says that faculty and administration at ICJA are able to build upon decades of educational experience to thoughtfully implement new strategies to prepare our students for an ever-changing society. “What we have here is something very unique – there is a tremendous commitment to be both traditional and 21st Century, so that we have so much added value.” She goes on to say, “People feel safe here to grow and learn. They are looking forward to learning something new because that’s the kind of teachers we have.”

This will be the reality for Academy freshman and sophomore classes in the fall. Over the last S year, ICJA administration and department chairs have G IN R prepared for our transition to a 1:1 school, thanks to a E NE grant from the George Shay z”l Endowment for Excellence in I G EN Academic Arts and Sciences. Starting in the fall, all freshmen and sophomores will receive a school-issued iPad loaded with apps, digital textbooks and software to enhance learning opportunities and collaboration. E

Our new, state-of-the-art building will be equipped with fast, wireless technology, charging stations and collaborative student and staff work spaces. All students had access to our school’s Google Apps for Education this year, but because every student did not have a personal device, we were not able to fully employ the program. Advantages include: • Textbooks will stay up-to-date each year with online updates • Students can work at their own pace, with teachers monitoring their work and mastery of the material. • Group projects take on whole new meaning, using apps to coordinate. Every discipline could be enhanced by the use of these tools as teachers utilize them to compliment every level of learning starting with student access to information, moving more deeply to describing their learning, to comparing and contrasting information, all the way to creating and presenting what they have learned. • Excellent and comprehensive curriculum already exists that can be best delivered utilizing digital devices. Our decision to become a 1:1 school is in line with educational research and trends that show that students today learn better using the same technology in the classroom that they are using in their daily lives.

After opening this school year with a Yom Iyun focused on the summer war in Gaza, we to set the tone for a year of growth and commitment as Religious Zionists. On Yom HaAtzmaut, speaking to seniors, Consul General Roey Gilad echoed a sentiment felt by everyone who knows the Academy:

WHEN YOU THINK OF THE SCHOOL THAT IS A POWERHOUSE IN SUPPORTING ISRAEL, IT IS IDA CROWN. We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. In the week following the Har Nof terrorist attack our students, like all Jews, were left reeling. Our Israel advocacy club spent a session discussing the tragic event and also heard from senior Revital Chavel, who worked at a camp for kids in Israel who have lost a loved one. Later that week, Revital and fellow senior, Emma Bellows, organized a community-wide program, Fighting Terror with Torah. Boys in Rabbi Gross’s class wrote a letter (excerpted below) to the mourners stating their commitment to daven with tefillin and a minyan, only to later find out that it was among the most meaningful the families received. Alum Lisa (Dordek) Goldenhersh (’73) happened to hear about the letter at the house of one of the mourners. Breinie Goldberg, wife of Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Goldberg Hy”d, read the letter aloud, saying the most powerful letter she got was from a Gemara class in Chicago.

YEAR IN REVIEW 2014-15 DRAMA INITIATIVE BRINGS TEXT TO LIFE English classes each quarter were joined by actors from Writers Theatre, who helped students interpret and act out plays, delivering lengthy monologues from memory. The results were charming renditions of The Great Gatsby, Antigone and Shakespeare. Students who never performed in a drama production before gained speaking and acting skills that will serve them throughout life, and students with acting experience had the opportunity to shine in front of their entire grade. Ms. Goldstein, who spearheaded the program says, “Writers Theater showed us the joy in performing texts, giving us close reading skills along with theatrical techniques that enabled us to lift the text off the page.” The program was funded by the George Shay z”l Endowment Fund, an endowment gift to an ICJA academic department from alum Scott Shay (’75). The English department won this year’s grant in order to make drama and the arts more formally part of the Academy classroom experience. Academy teachers annually submit a grant proposal to a committee of lay and professional leaders who select a department to receive the funding. The purpose of the endowment is to enhance the learning environment and appreciation of academic arts and sciences. The endowment is intended to foster a passion for general studies, consistent with Torah values.

STUDENT PUBLICATIONS Our students displayed incredible talent and dedication in this year’s publication of Charlotte’s Web, The Literary Magazine of ICJA, The Crown Prints newspaper and the Keter Yearbook. While large high schools across the nation produce stunning print publications, what’s a wonder at ICJA is that our small student body, with limited time, can produce such high-caliber work. Many thanks to the Susan and Joseph Ament Endowment Foundation that annually supports the Charlotte’s Web publication. Read the magazine online at icja.org.

YOMAM V’LAYLA Our students made dozens of siyumim this year in Tanach and Gemara. In halacha, we were proud to have piloted a new halacha course with Rabbi Yosef Zvi Rimon and his institute for halacha, Merkaz Halakha. Last year, the Academy implemented a successful curriculum in kashrut with girls in the Advanced Jewish Studies Program that was prepared in Israel especially for the Academy. Building on that program’s success, we expanded the project this year with new materials for teaching the laws of Shabbat and a special unit on shmita. In addition to our daily learning, students also joined several special, inspirational programs with the YU Torah Mitzion Kollel, including: Y’mei iyun, a sports chabura, Girls Night Out Learning and more. Students in B’nei Akiva and NCSY met regularly to learn Torah. And boys in the Mitzuyanim seminar learned additional Gemara twice a week before school.

MODEL UN ICJA students did a phenomenal job at this year’s Yeshiva University National Model United Nations, the student-run simulation of the workings of the real United Nations. Students learned a tremendous amount about how the UN functions, had a fantastic time and represented our school well. Junior Shoham Benmelech received special recognition as the Best Delegate of the Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

36 seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society in the fall. In the spring, dozens of ICJA students received awards at our annual Torah Awards banquet for excellence in Torah, diligence, character, mashpiim and chesed, including senior Marnina Harris (pictured), who received The Jason Lerner z”l Yehudi Hatov Award.

Mrs. Sarah Wainkrantz received the welldeserved ATT Hartman Family Teacher of the Year Award at this year’s ATT Annual Meeting. Dozens of alumni sent best wishes, echoing the sentiments of Aliza Musat (‘97): “What hasn’t she taught me? And my daughters… well deserved! One of my favorite and holiest teachers.”

Varsity girls cross country finished 1st in the Chicago Prep Conference and boys varsity took 2nd place.

ACES SCOREBOARD

The Aces fenced with all three weapons: Foil, Epee, and Saber. The relatively new sport at ICJA attracted more students than ever this year.

Boys varsity basketball won Tier II at the YU Sarachek Tournament. Kevin Bokor hit a close basket with 35 seconds left in the third quarter to earn his 1,000th career point.

3RD

In photography, students competed each week in our new photography club, Oh Snap!, led by students Kayla Bulgatz and Raina Kutliroff. A winner each week was posted on our Instagram page, and the results were amazing.

1ST Girls soccer came in 2nd place in the Conference and 3rd place in the Conference tournament.

The wrestlers took 3rd place in the IHSA Regionals and then secured a hard-fought 4th place finish at YU’s Wittenberg Tournament.

ANTHOLOGY OF LETTERS Rabbi Lord

Jonathan Sack’s series of letters, Letters to the Next Generation 2, seniors in Rabbi Shmuel Kurtz’s AJSP Jewish thought course composed their own letters on the topics. Together, the 18 senior girls created a meaningful anthology of letters to deepen their understanding and appreciation of their Jewish lives. Rabbi Kurtz then sent the letters to Rabbi Lord Sacks, who wrote the following to our students: Few things have moved me as much as the beautiful, moving, sincere and profound reflections of your students, and if I played a small part in stimulating them through “Letters to the Next Generation 2,” then I have been rewarded many times over by reading the lovely responses of your students. They are very special people, and Ashrei ha-Am shekacha lo: Happy the people that has young people like these...”

$2,833

The amount seniors raised for the ICJA Scholarship Fund in our “Senior Steakholders” social fundraiser. The winning team, led by Marnina Harris, enjoyed a rooftop steak lunch for raising $1,350.

$3,000

Students this year headed to Washington, D.C. to join AIPAC and Panim el Panim programs, and locally many students joined JUF’s Write On For Israel program and our own Israel advocacy class. Together, these programs ensure that our students are ready to thrive on college campuses that can often be hostile to Israel.

$1,600

The amount nearly 100 ICJA girls raised for Sharsheret after working tirelessly on ICJA Takes the Runway, a fashion and talent show that wowed an audience of 200+ for its professionalism.

The amount juniors raised for Israel cancer research on behalf of “Team Caleb,” in honor of classmate Caleb Maeir.

WE SURPASSED OUR GOAL! $1,035,764

$1,030,000

With a record high campaign goal in the same year as our Capital Campaign groundbreaking, our development team and lay leadership set out to achieve an unprecedented campaign goal. It is thanks to a dedicated group’s effort, that we are thrilled to have surpassed that goal, just one day prior to the annual campaign close on June 30. In total, the Academy family raised $1,035,764.07 for the ICJA Scholarship Fund – the first time the campaign has ever topped $1 million.

DR. EDWARD A. CROWN SCHOLARSHIP DINNER

Scholarship Funds assist more than 65 percent of our student body, ensuring the continuation of our founders’ mission that no Jewish child should be denied a Jewish education. As we work tirelessly to prepare our students to thrive in the modern world, both as Jews and as contributing members of society, we are so grateful to so many donors who enable us to accomplish that mission. This year as part of our continued efforts to improve our fundraising strategy, we continued our work with the Yeshiva University Benchmarking and Financial Reengineering Project in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago. We also welcomed alum Rachel Shandalov (‘05) to our development team as our new alumni coordinator. The highlight of our fundraising efforts was, of course, our annual dinner in March, where nearly 400 Academy supporters joined us to pay tribute to our esteemed honorees (at right).

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN 5775

We depend on the participation and support of parents, alumni and friends in our effort to provide the best possible opportunities for our students. We thank all those contributors who helped us reach our annual campaign goal.

We were proud to honor the following community builders in this year’s annual scholarship dinner (from left): Rabbi Shmuel Kurtz, Educator of the Year, pictured with his wife, Esther; David and Rosi Lennon, Crown Leadership Award; Dr. Richard Gershon and Lani Yampol Gershon, Crown Leadership Award; and Drs. Jeffery and Sherri Bressman, Board of Governors Award. Nearly 400 community members joined us for this year’s dinner, paying special tribute to couples whose vision enabled us to launch our capital campaign for a new building several years ago. >>>

THE MORE THAT YOU LEARN, THE BETTER YOU WILL TEACH. AND IF I’M A BETTER TEACHER, THEN I’M ALSO A BETTER PERSON. ~Rabbi Kurtz, recognized as Educator of the Year at this year’s dinner

SCHOLARSHIPS

Middle class families with multiple children in day school in some ways feel the “financial squeeze” of day school tuition more than any other group. These families often do not qualify for tuition scholarships yet struggle to meet tuition requirements. The Bernard Heerey Family Foundation Scholarship was established to meet the needs of these middle income families. Scholarships can finance as much as full tuition for families who meet these requirements. The Heerey Foundation was nearly 5 percent of our revenue for the 2014 fiscal year. We gratefully acknowledge the Heerey Family for their generosity.

JEWISH DAY SCHOOL GUARANTY TRUST Thank you to the JUF/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago and the generous donors to the Jewish Day School Guaranty Trust Fund. In Fiscal Year 2014, the Trust distributed $107, 892 to ICJA and $874,437 in total since the fund started. The Ida Crown Endowment Foundation was created in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago’s Day School Endowment Program and the Associated Talmud Torahs to ensure that ICJA and our sister day schools have the necessary resources to meet growing and evolving community needs. All commitments to the Day School Endowment Foundation are recognized as gifts to the Jewish Federation’s Centennial Campaign. ALUMNI UPDATES

REUNIONS We were thrilled to reunite with alumni from three classes this year at reunions. Pictured from left are members of the class of 1969, class of 1989 and class of 2005.

JEWISH COMMUNITY

Alumni, both here and in Israel, make incredible contributions to the Jewish community. We caught up with a few of them and featured them on our Academy Stories blog at icja.org. Abby Lennon Saper (’06), pictured with her husband, writes, “I am proud to be an Academy alum, for the values I have learned have paved a path for me to be the first in my family to make aliyah. I run into Academy alumni all around Israel in the most random places, and it feels amazing to know that I am part of many and not alone.” Alumni artists, Rena Grosser (’03) and Ariela Robinson (’01-pictured at left), joined Artists 4 Israel, collaborating on and delivering art healing kits to children in Israel.

SHERUT LEUMI Alum Shira Lebowitz (‘12) volunteered in Sheirut Leumi, as have several of our alumni, with Machon HaMikdash, an organization dedicated to Beit HaMikdash education and research. On a visit to Chicago this year, she presented a lecture to several of our Judaic Studies classes.

GAP YEAR Eighty-five percent of our class of 2014 spent this year in Israel, and several of them are returning for shana bet. Pictured are Rabbi Matanky and Mr. Harris visiting with many of them last winter.

Here at home, alumni from 2012 proudly supported Israel at a local Israel rally (pictured at right).

IDF SOLDIERS

ALIYAH

Several alumni made aliyah this past year, building up the already large Academy family in Israel. Pictured at left is Aaron Zimmerman (‘10), one of several alumni on last summer’s Nefesh b’Nefesh flight to Israel, during the war in Gaza. At right is former Judaic studies teacher Molly Katz (‘04) and her former student, Adina Schreiber (‘12), who made aliyah with Nefesh b’Nefesh on the same day.

16

BNEI AKIVA Current students and alumni met up in Israel at the Bnei Akiva World Veida. Alumni also got together regularly in Israel, sometimes sending us updates. Pictured are members of the class of 2012 in late spring.

Many of our alumni have served and are currently serving in the IDF, pictured are Eitan Redlich (‘12) and Gabe Michael (‘12), who were also joined by classmate Zach Cohn in their IDF service. At left is Josephine Gendler (‘14).

There is no doubt that the lessons our grandparents teach their children and grandchildren form the foundation of their lives as Jewish teenagers. It is thanks to their dedication to their families that our students are able to thrive as committed Jewish young adults. We pay tribute to our grandparents annually at our Grandparents Day, when we invite them to join us at the Academy for one morning that includes a student and staff presentation, a panel discussion, a tour and refreshments. We are so grateful to the grandparents who joined us for this year’s event and are especially grateful to those who contributed to our Grandparents Giving Circle by making a gift to our annual campaign.
