Publisher’s Note Having a diverse natural landscapes ranging from beaches, valleys, lakes, hills, to the mountains, West Java has the main raw materials in the tourism industry. The enormous potential is supported by other facilities such as accommodation, travel, restaurant, and attraction that are well managed. West Java government's target for 2013 is 1 million foreign tourists and 35 to 40 million domestic tourists (increased 10% from 2012). It has been established with major market still comes from Malaysia and Singapore. In fact, the room occupancy rate increased in May and June 2013. However, this increase is not only supported by leisure activities of the tourist but also comes from MICE sector. MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Conference, and Exhibition) has become a trend in the tourism world and become one of the important factors to bring tourists in large numbers (mass tourism). The capital of West Java, Bandung, has now entered into a row of MICE destinations in Indonesia with MICE city criteria: availability of facilities such as meeting rooms, conference room, ballroom, and adequate accessibility and readiness of the airport. And there are direct flights from abroad to the city. JTX (Jawa Barat Travel Exchange) is annual event that contributes in increasing foreign tourist to visit West Java which usually held in Bandung. However MICE are not a meeting only, in which there are incentives that can involve tourist destinations in some district and region. In West Java there are so many natural tourist destinations adequate for MICE groups, such as Pangandaran, Sukabumi, Garut, Subang and Bogor. Even the international event is often held such as offroad adventure, kite festival and surfing competition that has never missed a year. This book contains all of the components of MICE: venues, food services, organizers, transportation, and current information of attractions in West Java all that is summed up in this practical book bundle. In this edition, we identify the facilities which form the MICE activities in West Java (Page 39-94), alongside with the main attraction in West Java (Page 8-34). General Information Currency

Climate West Java has a tropical climate, with two distinct monsoonal wet and dry seasons. Average annual rainfall in the lowlands varies from 1,780–3,175 millimeters (70–125 in), and up to 6,100 millimeters (240 in) in mountainous regions. Mountainous areas—particularly in Bogor—receive the highest rainfall. Humidity is generally high, averaging about 80%. Temperatures vary little throughout the year; the average daily temperature range of Bandung is 17–29 °C (62–84 °F).

People and Religion West Java is the native homeland of Sundanese people which forms the largest ethnic group in West Java, followed by Javanese who migrated to the province centuries ago. Other Native Indonesian ethnic groups such as Minangkabau, Batak, Malay, Madurese, Balinese, Ambonese and many other Indonesians who migrated to and settled in West Java cities can also be easily found. West Java urban areas also have a significant population of Chinese Indonesians. Islam is the largest religion, but other religions such as Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism are widely and freely practiced.

Languages Sundanese is the widely-spoken language in the province. In some areas near the southern borders with Central Java, Javanese is also spoken. The main language spoken in Cirebon and nearby areas (Majalengka, Indramayu, Sumber) is Cirebonese, a dialect of Javanese with Sundanese influence. Indonesian is widely spoken as a second language.

The monetary unit is Rupiah Indonesia and is written as Rp or IDR. The exchange rate is valued at USD1 = Rp 10,272. Notes are available in Rp 1,000, Rp 2,000, Rp 5,000, Rp 10,000, Rp 20,000, Rp 50,000 and Rp 100,000 denominations, while coins are issued in 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 sen (cents) denominations. Foreign currencies can be exchanged at banks and money changers.

Immigration and Customs All travelers to West Java, Indonesia must be in possession of a passport that is valid for at least six months from the date of arrival, and have proof (tickets) of onward or return passage. The Indonesian Government extends Visa on Arrival (VoA) to nationals of 63 countries which can be obtained at designated entry airports and sea ports. Visa-on-Arrival is valid for 30 days and is extendable with another 30 days to be applied at Immigration offices in Indonesia. Please note that starting 26 January 2010, the 7-day Visa-on-Arrival has been discontinued Free Tourist short stay visas for 30 days are extended to tourists from 12 countries, namely from Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, Chile, Ecuador, Morocco and Peru. Immigration and customs checkpoints are situated at all air, sea, road, and rail entry points.

Place to stay There is accommodation to suit every visitor to West Java. The capital city of Bandung and the main town in each region have international-class hotels ranging from modest two stars to luxury six star properties. International chains like Hyatt, Hilton, and Accor Group Hotel have established or managed properties in Bandung and other cities and regencies.

Working days Office hours start from 8 AM to 4 PM, or 9 AM to 5 PM. Lunch break occurs between 12 noon to 1 PM. Usually offices are closed on Saturdays, including government offices. Government office hours start at 8 AM and end at 4 PM.

Electricity Electric power supply is 220 volts in all cities and regencies. So be careful with your 110-volt electronic equipment. The sockets will only fit with two pins rounded-tip plugs (technically known as Type C, E, and F) or use adaptors. Conduct Public behavior is important in West Java. Most Sundanese people refrain from displaying affection (i.e. embracing or kissing) in public. It would be appropriate for visitors to do the same.

Apart from the easy access from Jakarta, this city has plenty facilities required for tourism city. The city is also easy to be reached from Jakarta by private car, bus, travel services by Cipularang Toll road which allow the journey from Jakarta to Bandung only take 2 hours. In and around the city are many interesting attractions such as hot springs, tea plantations and volcanoes.

BOGOR As one of the oldest cities since the Dutch colonial era, Bogor City plays an important role in the history of Indonesia, especially in the development of MICE in West Java.

Ranging from history, heritage, back to nature and concept of beautiful villages, all of it summed up in one destination, West Java, which offers a uniqueness that will make your event memorable. MICE is not simply about meeting. This includes Incentive tour which is usually undertaken as a type of employee reward by a company or institution. Unlike the other types of MICE tourism, incentive tourism is usually conducted purely for entertainment, rather than professional or education purposes. There are some major attractions around Bandung in West Java and many of these can be visited in a few day organized tour or self-drive tours.

Subang, 53 km to the north, is the most famous place for its hot thermal bath and home to the Subang typical fruits: pineapple. Subang has many interesting attractions: Mt. Tangkuban Perahu, Sari Ater Hotel & Resort, and Subang Tea Plantation. One of the city that is growing as MICE destination in West Java is Cirebon. Located 134 km to the east, it home to the three Sultan palaces: Keraton Kasepuhan, Keraton Kacirebonan, and Keraton Kanoman. Cirebon city now has many hotels ranging from 3 to 4 stars hotels which has supported by MICE facilities. A visit to the southern part of West Java will reveal a land of serene natural beauty surrounded by the greenery of paddy during the planting season and golden hues at harvest time. Attractions here include the hot spring in Garut Regency, Rajapolah Craft Center in Tasikmalaya , Batukaras Beach and its surrounding in Pangandaran Regency.

West Java tourism promotion event, West Java Travel Exchange 15th - JTX 2013 held from 13-16 May 2013 at Grand Royal Panghegar Hotel Bandung. This event which aimed to increase the foreign tourists in West Java presented 80 stands or seller's booth and 120 buyers of companies/tour operations both from domestic and abroad. The chairman of JTX 2013, Handrio Utomo, said the event has been held 14 times and it was considered a success in bringing many tourists into the country. "We try to invite the countries that could bring tourists to Indonesia. This is a trade meeting between sellers and buyers" said Handrio in Bandung, Monday, May 6, 2013.

A total of 11 countries attended the event, including the Middle East, China, Japan, the Netherlands, Australia, India, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia. "Malaysia and Singapore is a country that brings many tourists to Indonesia, and China also has a very large potential market," he said. For domestic buyer participants, JTX 2013 inviting cities in Indonesia which has direct flights to Bandung such as Jakarta, Balikpapan, Pekanbaru, Makassar, Pontianak, Banjarmasin, Palembang, Jambi, Batam, Medan, Padang, Bali, Surabaya, Semarang, Solo, Yogyakarta and West Java itself. Followed by sellers from hospitality industries, tourist destinations, tour operators, spa, restaurants, transportation services such as PT KAI for tourist trains, and airlines. "Seeing an increased number of tourists every year, I am optimistic JTX can bring

positive energy to tourism economy in West Java" he said. Executive Director of West Java Tourism Promotion Board, Hilwan Saleh said West Java is a paradise for foreign tourists. He declared a target transaction for JTX in 2013 amounted to Rp204 billion due to the buyer is productive. JTX 2013 has been officially opened by West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan Monday (13/5) night at The Trans Luxury, Bandung. Geologically, Mt. Tangkuban Perahu has played a significant role in the development of Parahyangan highlands. Eruptions have contributed immensely to the hills north of Bandung through lava flowing into the valleys and hardening into rock, thus forming big cliffs over which waterfalls leap. Tangkuban Parahu is a volcano with three craters into which areas tourists can walk through. These three craters are: Kawah Ratu ("Queen Crater"), Kawah Domas ("Domas Crater"), and Kawah Upas ("Upas Crater"). Tourists can go down into the Domas Crater where many hot geysers in which they can boil eggs exist. Kawah Ratu, which means "Queen's Crater", is today just a big gray hole, which sometimes has a pool of water at its center. Poisonous gases sometimes accumulate in Kawah Ratu, thus making it somewhat of a risk to descend to the crater floor.

The most well known crater is the Domas crater, but also there are other smaller ones in jungle on the mountain's northeastern flank. Facilities in Tangkuban Perahu Crater are comfortable parking area, souvenir kiosks, and restaurants.

Tangkuban Perahu (spelt Tangkuban Parahu in the local Sundanese dialect) is a dormant volcano 30 km north of the city of Bandung, the provincial capital of West Java, Indonesia. It is a popular tourist attraction where tourists can hike or ride to the edge of the crater to view the hot water springs and boiling mud up close, and buy eggs cooked on the hot surface. The name translates roughly to "upturning of (a) boat" or "upturned boat" in Sundanese, referring to the local legend of its creation. The story tells of "Dayang Sumbi", a beauty who lived in West Java. She cast away her son "Sangkuriang" for disobedience, and in her sadness was granted the power of eternal youth by the Gods.

The tranquility and stunning view of West Java's Tea Plantation has long been recognized by many tourists. Tea was introduced in 1684 in the form of tea seeds from Japan as an ornamental plant. But it was Jacobus Isidorus Loudewijk Levian Jacobson, a tea specialist, who laid foundation for tea plantation business in Java around 18th century. As part of the Ring of Fire, West Java has several active volcanoes. The impact, some areas in West Java endowed by natural hot springs of healthy and later became a very interesting tourist attraction.

The most favorite tea destinations in West Java are in Subang, Ciwidey and Puncak Bogor. On sunny days, natural scenery is quite beautiful around the crater; with lake water greenish white, in stark contrast with the white limestone which surrounds the lake. The surrounding area is heavily forested. There is a pathway down to the lake which is surrounded by the high walls of the crater nestling into the side of Mt. Patuha. The smell of sulfur is strong because there is a good deal of steam and sulfurous gas bubbling from the lake. There are tracks around the lake and through the nearby forest including to the peak of Mt Patuha. Visitors can walk around the crater area or sit in the various shelters. Local plants not widely found in lower altitudes in Java include javanese Edelweiss and Cantigy (Vaccinium varingifolium). Animals and birds which may be spotted include eagles, owls, monkeys, mouse deer, and forest pigs, panthers, leopards and pythons have also sometimes been seen in the nearby forest. There are many thousands of small market-crop farmers in the fertile valley to the south of Bandung which leads up towards the Kawah Putih area.

Behind The Mask

Music and dance are integral components of Sundanese culture but vary widely. Cirebon mask dance or tari topeng Cirebon is a local original art of Cirebon, West Java, but is common in traditional Sundanese performances. It is dominated by graceful hand and body movements, and musical accompaniment dominated by drums and fiddle. The dance is performed on special occasions for local officials, or for other traditional celebrations. Cirebon mask dance has a lot of variety, and experienced growth in terms of dance, as well as stories to be conveyed. West Java as a place where wooden puppets or Wayang Golek originated from has participated in preserve it by building an art village, Jelekong Village, located in the southern Bandung.

One of the most unique and interesting events in Sindangbarang Cultural Village is “Adu Jaten Parebut Seeng” (Seeng is a Sundanese traditional kitchen appliance for cooking rice. Adu Jaten Parebut Seeng means battle strength or courage to try to steal the “seeng” of other player).

Usually held in May, this event was held in order to preserve the culture of Parebut Seeng which is a distinctive culture from Cimande districts in Bogor. The event was followed by martial arts champions from around the Bogor regency.
