Benefit concert set for Texas Lions Camp

Three musical groups will come together for a special concert at Trinity Worship Center in Pharr on Friday, Feb. 6. Rio Grande Valley Concert Band, Swing Street Swing Band and the Senior Ambas-

sadors will perform a benefit concert for the Texas Lions Camp (TLC) for children with physical disabilities. The bands and chorus are donating their services for the children.

TLC is a camp for children with disabilities where counselors are assigned at almost a one-to-one ratio, often matching the specific needs of the campers to the skills of the counselors. One of the best things that can happen to a child with disabilities, or who has Type I diabetes, is to be able to go to camp and do the things a child without disabilities or diabetes can do. Many camps for children will not accept children with these problems and are not equipped to handle their special needs. But the Texas Lions Camp is different. Texas Lions Camp, located in Kerrville, Texas, is not your typical summer camp. It is the place where children with all kinds of disabilities discover they can do things they never thought they could do. Disabilities served by the camp include absence or amputation of limbs, asthma, blindness, birth defects, burns, cancer, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, deafness, diabetes, dwarfThe staff at Texas Lions Camp is well trained to accommodate the special needs ism, epilepsy, Lupus, multiple sclerosis, of children with disabilities. After being safely harnessed in, this child enjoys flying muscular dystrophy, scoliosis, sickle cell down the zip line. Three groups – the RGV Concert Band, Swing Street Big Band and See BENEFIT CONCERT pg. 43 Senior Ambassadors – are performing a benefit concert for the camp on Feb. 6.

Dave & Daphne return to delight of RGV

The delightfully talented couple Dave & Daphne will be returning to the Rio Grande Valley to entertain Winter Texans in February. Both are highly talented musicians, with Dave known for his incredible guitar-playing skills. Daphne is known for her fantastic voice. And she’s easy on the eyes, as well. Putting them both together in one show makes for a great evening of entertainment as these two amazing talents have a stage chemistry that makes audiences smile with pleasure. Adding just the right amount of humor, this duo puts on one of the best shows to come to the Rio Grande Valley. Dave Salyer has toured the world with Barbara Mandrell, performed at the White House for the President on three different occasions, and appeared on countless TV shows. He was acclaimed as one of the most fabulous guitarists on the planet by Roy Clark. Barbara Mandrell simply stated, “Dave Salyer is the best guitarist I’ve ever had.” His repertoire ranges from the “Orange Blossom Special” to the “Flight of the Bumblebee” and from the “Wildwood Flower” to the “William Tell Overture.” He is also an accomplished vocalist, songwriter and humorist. Daphne Anderson is a beautiful female vocalist who was born and raised in Alba-

ny, Georgia. While attending college, she performed in pageants, talent contests, and churches. She has toured with some of the greatest Southern Gospel Music Groups of all time, including The Bill Gaither Group, The Florida Boys, The Cathedrals, Rex Nelon, The Hinsons, and many others. The Southern Gospel Music Association voted her their Female Vocalist of the Year. Shortly after graduating from Georgia Southwestern University, she moved to Nashville to pursue a career in music. Daphne is best described as a cross between Shania Twain and Patsy Cline. She’s very attractive, quick-witted, and super talented. Her impressions of country music legends, Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn are among the best. Add to that her

ability to yodel out the Patsy Montana classic, “Cowboy’s Sweetheart,” captivate audiences with Whitney Houston’s smash hit, “I Will Always Love You,” and bless audiences with a gospel classic, “The Lord’s Prayer.” Both Dave and Daphne give credit to God for their wonderful talents. Leland Jones brings Country Pickin’ to Valley stages

A new country artist has arrived in town. They’re not really new, since Leland Jones has been singin’ and pickin’ country songs professionally since 1963, but this is the first season Country Pickin’ featuring Leland Jones will be in the Valley. For those who love traditional country music, Leland Jones is just the man to deliver. He has performed with many of the “big names” in country music including Mel Tillis, Hank Thompson, Dolly Parton, Jeanne Pruitt, Sonny Osborn, Rhonda Vincent and Bill Anderson. He also worked with Porter Wagoner, Johnny Horton, David Houston, Dottie Wests, Cal Smith and many others. He considered it a privilege to work with these “big name artists” in the country music industry. His singing career began at 12 when he performed at the Cow Town Jubilee singing Web Pierce’s “Slowly,” his #1 seller. Leland was the youngest of 11 children in a musically inclined family. Music was always an important part of his life. During his high school years he had his own bluegrass band, the Show Me Bluegrass Boys, who traveled all over Missouri using their talents. He has been a professional musician since 1963 and played See COUNTRY PICKIN’ pg. 29

Kenny Hess returns for limited engagement

Award-winning Canadian country performer Kenny Hess made his debut in the Rio Grande Valley in 2014 late in the season and was well received by Winter Texan audiences. This outstanding singer, who was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2014, will be in the Rio Grande Valley during late January and February when country music fans will have the chance to hear him perform with his deep, versatile voice that ranges from bass to tenor. This year’s event is bigger than ever before as several events have been added to the weekend fiesta celebration, including a golf tournament at Shary Golf Course, a Mexican Artisan Market at the Mission Historical Museum, a Classic Car Show, plus the popular Saturday afternoon packed with top entertainers in downtown

Mission. On Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. there will be live entertainment at the Leo Peña Placita Park in downtown Mission across from the H-E-B on Conway and Business 83. pick up their meal ticket in advance at the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce located at 202 W. Tom Landry in Mission starting Monday, Feb. 9. On Feb. 5 the Casa Del Sol Chapter of Good Sam and “Cook Brothers Entertainment” will host their annual benefit performance for the Texas State Veteran’s Home in McAllen. The evening will include their “Rock and Roll Is Here To Stay” show along with some special guests and surprises. The musical performance includes early rock and roll numbers and other music styles. Jerry and Jack Cook sing harmony and play a variety of instruments. There is no admission charged at the door and all donations are voluntary. Contributions are given to the Veteran’s

Home to provide comfort items for their residents who have sacrificed and served to preserve our freedom. Last year’s donations provided recliners for the Alzheimer’s wing. Anything that gives a degree of comfort, especially for Alzheimer’s patients, is a high priority for the facility. One hundred percent of all contributions are given for that purpose. All participation by the park, the Good Sam chapter and the Cook Brothers is completely voluntary. The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the Casa Del Sol RV/Mobile Resort Rec Hall, 400 North Val Verde Road in Donna.

All male singers are invited to be part of the largest Men’s Choral Festival in South Texas on Feb. 21. Men from teens to senior citizens are welcome. Roger Wayne is new magician in RGV

There’s a new magician in town. With over 30 years of performing magic, Roger Wayne combines his talents as a magician-comedian to captivate audiences all over the country. As a child, Roger was interested in the mechanics of how things worked. He would look at a doorknob and wonder what made it work. He took all of his parent’s doorknobs off to satisfy his curiosity and learn. Magic is very similar. How did he make her disappear? What created the illusion? How are hands quicker than the eye so people do not see what the trick performed in front of them? His interest in magic stems from childhood when there was a magician living down the road from him. He was amazed at the magic and wanted to learn how to do it. Richard Gaugh, the magician, told him if he was really interested, he would teach him but he would have to practice. Once Richard

saw Roger was serious about it, Richard mentored him and taught him how to do the magic tricks. Roger also studied and read books about how to perform magic

tricks. He was bitten by the bug of magic and there was no going back. Today, Roger does many audience participation stunts that will make audiences laugh until they cry. This is what makes his show a truly unique family adventure. Roger is a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Society of American Magicians. He has traveled through more than 30 states performing his show at college campuses, shopping malls, convention centers, and cruise ships. He has worked with headliners such as Ed McMahon, WGN’s “Bozo Circus” and has been on many other TV and radio shows. Roger is available for Winter Texan shows and many other special events including anniversaries, awards nights, banquets, birthday parties, ladies luncheons and all kinds of parties or club gatherings. To book a show with Roger, call (956) 271-4271 or email him at rogerdespard@bellsouth.net.

This year Gordy & Debbie are attempting to raise $10,000 for the orphanage by bringing in country and pop singing legend Mickey Gilley and his Urban Cowboy Band to help with the effort. The concert will be held at the Pharr Convention Center Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. All profits from this endeavor will go to help Children’s Haven International, said Gordy. “The school at the orphanage has really expanded this year,” added Gordy, explaining the need for expansion of the school. “It now has 11 teachers who teach the traditional one-half day of classes taught in Mexican schools. In the past there were only three, but because of the turmoil in Mexico and in Reynosa many parents in the area around the school choose to send their children to school there because they believe their children are safer.” Currently, there are over 60 children who call Children’s Haven International home.
