Mariachi Aztlán is mariachi at its best

The University of Texas Pan American’s Student Union Theater was alive with the sound of mariachi music last weekend as the award-winning Mariachi Aztlán performed a selection of traditional mariachi songs including canciones, rancheras and baladas. With violins, guitars, guitarrones, trumpets and a harp all playing in perfect harmony as the musicians sang choruses and took turns singing the lead, young and old audience members alike clapped and cheered enthusiastically at the conclusion of each song performed by the 16-member group. Founded in 1989 by Dr. Dahlia Guerra, Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at UTPA, Mariachi Aztlán was born out of a desire to promote Mexican folk music and the culture of the Hispanic people of South Texas. Since its founding, UTPA’s Mariachi Aztlan group is a multiple winner of the prestigious Grand Champi- Mariachi Aztlán has performed throughonship at the Mariachi Spectacular Competition in Albuquerque, New Mexico. out Mexico and the United States with Winter Texan Times photos by Luciano Guerra highlights including two performances at

the White House, a performance with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, a performance at the Hollywood Bowl, a performance at the San Jose Mariachi Mexican Heritage Festival in San Jose, California, and a tour of Christmas shows in New Mexico. While the true origins of mariachi music may never be known, Guerra shared that portion of its history that is most widely accepted. “The instruments are European,” explained Guerra. “The violin, the guitar, the trumpet – these are all European. However, when the Spaniards arrived in Mexico and established schools of music, the Roman Catholic Church set out to stamp out all indigenous music. But little by little as the music of Spain mixed with the rhythms of the indigenous music, those twos against threes and the huapango rhythm that are so unique, that’s where you find the roots See MARIACHI AZTLÁN pg. 03

Winter Texans choose Favorite RGV Golf Courses Tierra del Sol takes No. 1 spot The Rio Grande Valley has dozens of golf courses to choose from, and most of them offer beautiful tropical scenes of lush green fairways lined with palm trees, adding to the pleasure of getting outdoors to enjoy your favorite pastime. Combine that with the mild winter temperatures that allow the dedicated duffer to play almost any day of the year and you have a golfer’s paradise. Many Winter Texans take advantage of the golfer’s paradise, playing golf on a regular basis. Of course, they have their favorite courses to play. Some prefer the more challenging courses, while others prefer a course that is not overly difficult, but designed for amateur players to enjoy. The Winter Texan Times has conducted a poll of Winter Texans, asking them to vote for their favorite golf courses in the Rio Grande Valley. Winter Texans from all across the Rio Grande Valley cast their ballots for their favorite golf courses and selected the Top Ten Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Courses. Coming in first place by a narrow mar-

gin, was Tierra del Sol Golf Course in Pharr. Neck-and-neck were the No. 2 and No. 3 vote getters, Tierra Santa Golf Club in Weslaco and No. 3 River Bend Resort Golf Course in Brownsville. The Top Ten courses are all excellent courses that are well maintained – though the top courses certainly do stand out. Rounding out the Top Ten courses Valleywide are: No. 4, South Padre Island Golf Club (Laguna Vista); No. 5, Los Lagos Golf Club (Edinburg); No. 6, Palm View Golf (McAllen); No. 7, Harlingen Country Club; No. 8, Treasure Hills Country Club (Harlingen); No. 9, Monte Cristo Golf & Country Club (Edinburg); and No. 10 Rancho Viejo Resort & Country Club. The Valley golf courses were listed on the Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Course ballot by geographic area – Upper Valley, Mid-Valley and Lower Valley – and our readers were asked to vote for their favorite golf course in each area, as well as their favorite overall course Valleywide. From pg. 01 and the passion of Mexican folk music.” “It was originally all string instruments,” added Guerra. “However in the 1930s and 1940s the trumpets were added and then the standard instrumentation of six or seven violins, two or three trumpets, a guitarron, a vihuela and a couple of guitars became standard in the 40s and 50s.” While the lyrics are all in Spanish, Guerra explains why it is not necessary to speak or even understand Spanish in order to enjoy mariachi music. “The music speaks for itself,” shared Guerra. “It’s the passion, the way the instruments throw the melody back and forth and the rhythmic play between sections. It’s a very passionate, emotional and expressive form of music.” The UTPA Mariachi Aztlán has been selected as the “Outstanding College or University Mariachi” in nationwide competition various times. It has also won at the university and at the professional level, winning “Grand Champions” of the Mariachi Spectacular Competition in Albuquerque, New Mexico several years in a row. Mariachi Aztlán also won first place in the “Best in Texas” Mariachi Invitational at the Houston Rodeo in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012, performing for over 73,000 people on each occasion. All of this success on a national and international level has led to Mariachi Aztlán receiving invitations to perform

throughout Mexico and the United States. “When you win at a national level you get the kind of attention we’ve been receiving,” said Guerra. “We’re called a lot to do really amazing things. Not only have we performed for President Obama twice, but just over the past year we’ve performed in

San Diego, California, we’ve performed in Albuquerque, we’ve performed in New Mexico and in Chicago.” Several of Mariachi Aztlán’s current members are graduates of local high schools. Ruben de los Santos, who plays the guitar and is one of the lead singers, is

a 2008 graduate of Edinburg High School. After Sunday night’s performance De los Santos took a few minutes to share how he became a mariachi musician. “I first heard mariachi music as a freshman at Edinburg High School,” said de los Santos. “That was when I was taken to the San Antonio Mariachi Vargas competition and I fell in love with it. It’s really rich in culture and in passion. It’s just a way of life for the Mexican people. You don’t understand it until you experience it live because there’s nothing like live mariachi music.” Orlando De Leon graduated from Edinburg North High School in 2010. As one of Mariachi Aztlán’s first violins he was featured in several of the songs played Sunday night. Like de los Santos, De Leon came to love mariachi when he attended a competition. “I used to think that mariachi was drunk music so that turned me off to it,” explained De Leon. “But then my friends told me that I could get out of class and get free food by attending all these functions so I went along. But then I saw Mariachi Vargas in Corpus Christi and man was I blown away. That changed my whole perspective about mariachi music and I realized that it can be a lot of fun and very energetic and not just a bunch of bar music.” Upcoming performances for Mariachi Aztlán will be held at UTPA’s Albert L. Jeffers Theater Jan. 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. and Jan. 31 at 3 p.m. For more information and ticket prices call 956-665-2175.

Mission Quilt Show call for entries

The Mission Historical Museum will accept entries beginning Tuesday, Dec. 2, for its Ninth Annual Mission Quilt Show. Entries will be accepted in six categories: Hand-quilted bed quilts; Machine-quilted bed quilts; Mixed media (quilted items which incorporate non-traditional materials); Wall hangings; Wearable art; and Miscellaneous (decorative or utilitarian items). The show is open to all quilters, both Winter Texans and year-round residents. Quilts and wall hangings must be ready to hang with a sleeve for display purposes. Entries are accepted on a first-in/ first-accepted basis. Because of limited space, the museum reserves the right to close entries before the deadline. This will allow for the best possible presentation for all entries. To allow for the broadest representation, participants may submit only one item per person. Any quilt entered in this show within the past five years is not eligible for entry this year. The quilts will be judged by a panel of independent judges, with ribbons awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each category. Best-of-Show and Viewers’ Choice ribbons will also be awarded. Entries will be accepted at the museum from Tuesday, Dec. 2, through Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015. Quilts will be accepted Mon-

days through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The museum will be closed Dec. 24 and 25, and Jan. 1. The exhibit opens on Saturday, Jan. 10, and runs through Saturday, Feb. 7. An Awards Reception will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6. The Mission Historical Museum is located at 900 Doherty in downtown Mission. Admission is free. For more information, call the museum at (956) 580-8646.

Butterflies make Texas Butterfly Festival appearance

MISSION, TX – Beautiful weather combined with the natural beauty of thousands of butterflies to delight this year’s participants in the 19th Annual Texas Butterfly Festival, which concluded Nov. 4. Festival organizers report a total of 115 species sighted, including the very rare Blue-studded Skipper and Telea Hairstreak. While these special visitors thrilled festival participants in search of ‘life’ butterflies, the majority of folks who made the trek to deep, south Texas were here to experience the unique volume and variety of Lower Rio Grande Valley butterflies that burst onto the scene each fall. Colorful migrants, including Monarchs, arrive each October through November, to herald the change of seasons. Finding warmth in the Valley—and lots of blooming flowers on which to nectar—cold-blooded butterflies typically stop here to re-fuel on their journey south; while some choose to make this their home for the winter. Moderate, seasonal temperatures and a 365-day per year growing season sustain abundant breeding and feeding areas for them at the National Butterfly Center and other native habitat preserves in the LRGV Wildlife Conservation Corridor. The annual Texas Butterfly Festival continues to bring new people and greater renown to the region, well known for it’s subtropical clime and genial atmosphere.

Together, these support a booming environmental tourism industry that has an estimated economic impact of more than $400 million per year. “The value of visitors from nearly two dozen states, many of whom stay for several weeks at this time of year, is significant,” explains Marianna Trevino-Wright, executive director of the National Butterfly Center, which organizes and hosts the festival. “Not only do they contribute to the local tax base by frequenting local businesses, they also act as unofficial ambassadors for our community. Through social media posts, stunning photos, and

reports shared back home, festival participants help spread the word about the Rio Grande Valley’s friendly people, affordable amenities and, of course, our wonderful landscape, featuring clouds of butterflies that look like something straight out of a Disney movie.” In the wake of this year’s nightly news headlines, events such as the Texas Butterfly Festival are especially important to dispel negative stories about south Texas. Chris Tenney, a former festival participant, states, “Last winter, I spent several months, most of November to March, searching for butterflies along the Rio

Grande River, both on foot and by mountain bike. Most of my butterfly walks were at the National Butterfly Center, at least two-to-three times per week, and I was also a regular at Estero Llano Grande and Bentsen-RGV State Parks, and Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. At no time did I feel any concern for lack of safety, and I experienced no incidents with any type of illegal crossing. Border Patrol agents were a constant presence, so I often waved to them and engaged them in conversation, and this may have enhanced my sense of security. I look forward to repeating my visit this year. I’ve already booked an RV site for December through March at Bentsen-Palm Village RV Resort.” This year, local law enforcement played an unexpected role in the festival by directing butterfliers to a cache of Curve-winged Metalmarks near the old pump station on south Rio Rico Road, in Hidalgo County. From Falcon Heights to Port Isabel, festival participants benefitted from the expertise of familiar guides and thoughtful planning, made possible by support from the City of Mission and Mission Economic Development Corporation, primary sponsors of the event. “The Texas Butterfly Festival began nineteen years ago as a way to celebrate See BUTTERFLIES pg. 09

Tours of Branson and points all over Texas offered by Go with Jo Tours

By Kathy Olivarez Go…With Jo! Tours and Travel in Harlingen, owned and operated by Jo Liston, is well known for providing a variety of fun tours to Winter Texans. With fewer tours going into Mexico these days Go... With Jo! has created a number of fun tours in Texas and one special Christmas tour of Branson, Missouri. These tours are designed for Winter Texans who might like explore other parts of Texas as well as to offer a chance to enjoy the Branson Christmas celebrations without having to do the driving. The Branson Christmas Shows tour is a seven-day tour that will leave on Dec. 8. The group will see several shows including Miss Laura’s Players, Shoji Tabuschi, Dublin’s Irish Tour & The Celtic Sisters, the Dixie Stampede Christmas Dinner Show, the Brett Family and SIX, a newer show in Branson that features six brothers who sing and play their hands for musical instruments. On the way home there will be a stop at the Texas Music Hall of Fame. A dinner cruise on the Branson Belle is included. In all, ten meals are included along with three bedtime snacks of cobbler with ice cream or ice cream sundaes while staying at the Savannah House in Branson. The cost of the trip is $959 per person. A new tour has been created this year at the request of some Winter Texans who wanted to see these sights and Jo thought others might enjoy them as well. Christmas in East Texas will leave for five days on Dec. 8. The tour will visit a number of East Texas sites including the Depot Museum in Henderson and the New London School Museum. For those unfamiliar with this tragedy on March 18, 1937, New London school, which was heated with gas, blew up when an instructor turned on a sanding machine in an area that was filled with a mixture of gas and air. The switch ignited a flame that was carried below the school building. Witnesses said the school was lifted up and then crashed to the ground with the roof caving in. The blast killed 294 of the school’s 500 students as well as a number of teachers. An entire generation of the city was lost. Other stops will include the East Texas Oil Museum and the Rangerette Museum in Kilgore, the Howard Dickinson Home in Rusk and a trip on the Polar Express Train, which is really the Texas State Railroad all dressed up for the holidays. The tour will visit the town of Marshall, which is on the “Trail of Christmas Lights” tour. They will slip across the border into Louisiana for a visit to Sam’s Town casino in Shreveport before heading home. One

Jo Liston

stop on the homeward bound leg will be in Cleveland for the Texas Music Hall of Fame. This tours costs $625 and includes four nights in a hotel and seven meals. For those who want to stay closer to home, on Nov. 28 there is a three-day trip to San Antonio that includes a stay at Drury Plaza River Walk Hotel. There will be visits to the Institute of Texas Culture, the SAS General Store and the Mission San Jose along with a morning riverboat cruise. Those with German heritage will especially enjoy the visit to the Guenther House and Steve’s Homestead, where the original Pioneer Flour Mill was located in the Old King William area of San Antonio that was the original German section of San Antonio. The $379 price of this tour includes two lunches and two breakfasts plus hot hors d’oeuvres that will be served during the trip. This tour will be offered again on Dec. 14 and will include the beautifully decorated Lambermont historic home instead of Steve’s Homestead. For those who enjoy the annual presentation at the “Christmas House” near Falfurrias, the tour will take place on Dec. 8 and again on the 13th. Every room in the house is decorated for the holidays with a collection of memorabilia collected over a lifetime. The tour includes lunch and time for shopping at Santa’s Workshop. The cost is $75. For those who prefer to travel for the New Year’s holiday, Jo has a two-day tour going to Monterrey. “Traveling in Mexico is not as popular as it once was,” says Liston, “but I have never had any problems in Mexico.” She formerly offered tours of San Miguel Allende and Copper Canyon, but has not offered them for awhile, but will offer this Monterrey trip this season. The cost is $265. See GO...WITH JO pg. 09

the richness and diversity of butterflies that may be found here,” states Aida Lerma, Deputy City Manager. “Since then, we’ve adopted the Mexican Bluewing as our official butterfly and attracted the attention of the North American Butterfly Association, which chose to build the National Butterfly Center, here. This beautiful facility represents a $7 million investment in our community—and it keeps growing. Now, Mission boasts one of the Top Gardens in Texas, and has been called ‘the butterfly capitol of the USA’ by USA Today. This just goes to show that preserving our natural treasures has led to many good things, like creating jobs, generating tourism and protecting quality of life for local residents.” Today, the Texas Butterfly Festival is the nation’s premier butterflying event. GO...WITH JO From pg. 08

Go…With Jo! has two tours of the King Ranch area planned. The first is Nov. 22 to the famous King Ranch Hands Breakfast where cowboys cook breakfast and demonstrate early cowboy skills used on the ranch. The second tour is on Dec. 27 when guests will tour the ranch to learn about the life and times of Richard King, the steamboat captain (on the Rio Grande River) who founded one of the world’s largest ranches. Other visits include the Henrietta Memorial Museum, the Sellers Market, and the Running W Saddle Shop. Guests will enjoy a Texas style barbecue at Caesar Kleberg’s Camp House. The cost of this trip is $75. There will be several two-day trips offered to the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. The next trips are on Dec. 9 and Dec. 24. The tour is $80. She will also offer weekly trips January through March, but the dates have not been confirmed yet. In addition to arranging these special tours Go…With Jo! is a travel agency that can book trips all over the world. Winter Texan friends who may enjoy traveling together in the summer might want to talk to Liston about a special location. She says Ireland is a very popular location to visit. But she can arrange a tour just about anywhere people might want to go. For more information about the trips, contact Go…with Jo at (956) 423-1446 in the Lower Valley or (956) 664-1446 in the Upper Valley (McAllen area). Go… with Jo is located at 910 Dixieland Road in Harlingen.

Discover Big Daddy’s Fantastic Burgers When traveling, it’s always fun to look for the downhome eating places that all the locals flock to. It’s not the big-name national chains, but the small, Mom and Pop restaurants that are the “discoveries” we are hoping to find. Well, look no further. When in the Valley, you’ve got to try Big Daddy’s Burgers for the biggest, juiciest, most flavorful burgers you’ve ever tasted. A real delight for the taste buds. When I was asked to go check out this restaurant, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But the moment I walked in the door I knew this one was different. The walls are colorfully decorated with 3-D dappled cows seemingly floating through the air, creating a fun and entertaining atmosphere. You immediately get the idea: this place is serious about beef and burgers. After tasting one of their many choices of awesome burgers, I asked the restaurant owner Alfonso Davila how he was able to make his burgers so juicy and delicious. He explained that it starts with the beef. He grinds the meat for every burger fresh every day and makes his own handmade, 3/4-lb. beef patties, adding his own secret ingredients packed with flavor. It’s more work, he said, but it makes all the difference in the world, as he is able to select the right cuts of meat, adding his own secret seasonings to form big, juicy patties for the best-tasting burgers. Cooked fresh the same day never frozen.

Then, as a trained chef who loves food with flavor, he uses his own secret recipes for bringing out the best flavors in all the toppings -- whether it’s the Big Daddy Burger Classic or any of Big Daddy’s Specialty Burgers. The term “gourmet burger” just doesn’t do justice to the incredible experience of a Big Daddy burger. I had the Mexi-can 3/4 lb. Burger topped with cheese, ham and avocado. Since I have been bored with most other burgers, I was not expecting the awesome flavor experience I had at Big Daddy’s. Juicy. Delicious. Wonderful. Great choice. Alfonso Davila says this one is a Winter Texan favorite! When can we go back? I want to try all the other varieties. Frito® Pie Burger: 3/4 lb patty, covered with chili con carne, cheese, veggies and crunchy Frito® corn chips. The South Texas: 3/4 lb patty loaded with chili con carne, cheese & all the veggies. Chori-Queso Burger: 3/4 lb patty smothered with a true Latin flavor! A blend of Swiss cheese and chorizo. Served with all the veggies. The Fire House: 3/4 lb patty covered with Big Daddy’s secret sauce made with three different chilies and cheese. ...and there is so much more to try!

Tierra Del Sol is Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Course

“It is a great honor to be selected by Winter Texans as their favorite golf course in the Rio Grande Valley,” said Tierra Del Sol Golf Director Raul Garza. “We are very proud of our golf course. The Pharr City Council made a decision a couple of years ago to put $1 million worth of improvements into the golf course, which was completed in 2013, and it has paid off in this hon-

We also used another type of grass called Celebration Grass in all the Tee Boxes. Finally, we added an aesthetics crew to keep the course appealing to the eye. We believe our course and greens are now second to none in the Valley. And as the greens mature, the course See TIERRA DEL SOL pg. 18

River Bend Resort Golf Course, which spreads along the banks of the Rio Grande River in Brownsville, was ranked the favorite Lower Valley Golf Course and was number three overall in the 2014 Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Course survey by the Winter Texan Times. Holes 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12 and 13 are right on the banks of the Rio Grande. Other holes have man-made water hazards. Russell warns it is easy to lose balls into the river. Tierra Santa voted Mid-Valley Winter Texan Favorite

While the unusually cold November day was keeping most golfers away, there were a few hardy souls out on the driving range at Tierra Santa Golf Club, located at 1901 Club de Amistad, in Weslaco when the Winter Texan Times stopped by late last week. Winter Texans voted Tierra Santa their Favorite Mid-Valley Golf Course in this year’s Winter Texan Times survey.

The course ranked as the Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Course in the Mid-Valley and number two Favorite RGV Golf Course Valleywide. Tierra Santa is a public 18-hole golf course featuring 7100 yards of golfing with a 72 par and a 125 slope. The course has 40 sand bunkers and six lakes to challenge players. South Padre Island Golf Club is possibly the most beautiful golf course in the Rio Grande Valley, due to its location on the Laguna Madre and the scenic view of South Padre Island across the water. The course was ranked No. 4 in the 2014 Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Courses survey. This 18-hole public golf course offers 5542 to 6931 yards, depending on the

level of play a golfer prefers. The SPI course is a par 72, with Hole 16 considered to be the hardest hole – a par four. Hole 6 is the easiest and most scenic, as it is located on the edge of the Laguna Madre. Only Hole 4 does not have a water challenge from the Laguna Madre or a made-made lake. Hole 12 is also difficult because of natural vegetation obstacles there. When the north wind blows, Hole 18 See SOUTH PADRE pg. 19

Los Lagos Golf Club ranked No. 5 by Winter Texans

Los Lagos Golf Club in Edinburg was ranked fifth in the recent Winter Texans’ Favorite RGV Golf Course poll. And according to assistant manager Sixto Torres, the course also was awarded The Monitor’s 2014 Reader’s Choice Award for being the favorite golf course in the Rio Grande Valley. Los Lagos is an 18-hole course offering 7188 yards of golf for a par of 72. The course was designed by Von Hagge, Smelek & Baril and first opened in 2001.

“We are very proud of the condition of our golf course,” said Torres. We work hard to keep our greens in great shape for our golfers. Torres went on to say that Los Lagos is not an easy course to play because every hole has a water challenge from the 14 lakes on the property. There are also 70 sand bunkers that make the course challenging. It was designed to resemble a links course similar to the golf courses in England. The course has no trees but has lots of undulation to challenge golfers. The direction of the winds can also add to the challenge.

It’s no surprise Palm View Golf Course in McAllen was selected by Winter Texans as one of their favorites. A PGA level golf course, Palm View is known for its reasonable rates and beautiful landscaping as well as the challenges of the course. The course is a par 72 with 5779 to 6771 yards of fairways depending on the level of play chosen. “It is such a beautiful course and is filled with wildlife,” said Sandra Burgess of Alamo who had just finished a round

And the greens on the fairway are lush, better than most in the Valley.” Cathy Halstead of Manitoba said she agrees with Sandra because she enjoys seeing the wildlife found on the course while she plays. The flamingos are her favorites also. Sandra’s husband Larry Burgess said it is an excellent course, one of the best in the Valley because it is not too hard and it is not too easy.” Larry was happy because he had experienced an unusualSee PALM VIEW pg. 19

Bazan agreed with Garza in saying hole three was the most difficult. “It has water on the left side along with an out-ofbounds area where there are houses on the course. Zeke Reyna, who is the son of the owner. Reyna was a professional golfer for five years on the Canadian tour. Garza said people who play at Tierra Santa enjoy the great shape the course is kept in and appreciate the friendly staff. The view of the waterfall is commanding from the clubhouse and people enjoy watching it while eating. According to Garza, a number of golfers who know golf courses across the state have come to play at Tierra Santa. “They are surprised at the high quality golf course we have and the way it is so well maintained. They are also surprised at how reasonable the cost of playing the course is.” Garza credited David Martin who maintains the grounds with knowing just what it takes to keep the grounds in perfect shape.

From pg. 16 Reyna said that on a scale of one to ten, Tierra Santa is about an eight. Reyna has played golf all over the United States and Canada and is willing to put his golf course up beside any of them. Reyna used Doug Brenner and Steve Elkington, who won the PGA Championship in 1995, to design the course. “We have spent the last two years making a number of improvements to the course,” explained Reyna. “We brought in a high quality Bermuda grass called Champion Green and we are one of three courses in the Rio Grande Valley to use this grass. It is the finest type of grass for playing golf.” To aid Winter Texans in their play, Reyna said, “We trim our rough shorter to make it easier to find balls and to walk. In the summer we keep the grass a bit longer.”

Reyna said the most difficult hole to play is hole No. 1, because it is 326 to 449 yards into the wind and uphill. The course is designed for play in a south wind. He said when a norther blows in, holes No. 5 and No. 15 become very difficult to play. Reyna and Garza both agree, the clubhouse is a favorite among golfers. “They can sit either inside or outside while enjoying the view of the waterfall while eating the best cheeseburger in town!” Rates to play Santa Tierra are $43.30 for 18-holes with a cart before 1 p.m. and $32.48 after the twilight fee kicks in at 1 p.m. Golfers can play nine holes with a cart any time of day for $30. offers different levels of play but golfers can get up to 6767 yards of golf with a par 72 rating. The course has a slope rating of 118 on Bermuda grass. Jacque St. Pierre, a Winter Texan from Ontario, explained why he plays at Tierra Del Sol. He said the course offers different levels of challenge depending on which level of play is selected. He enjoys participating in the Men’s League and said the course offers all sorts of amenities. As an added bonus, the food is excellent in the clubhouse too. Tierra Del Sol placed first in the Upper Valley and Best Overall in the Valley in the Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Course survey conducted by the Winter Texan Times. Winter Texans who enjoy playing different courses while in the Valley, will want to check it out and see the new improvements.

Martin Valley is now Howling Trails Golf Course

Martin Valley Golf Course has new owner and a new name. Earlier this year, La Joya Independent School District purchased the golf course and changed the name to Howling Trails Golf Course. The course will remain open to the public. As part of the terms of the sale, the school district agreed to keep the 18-hole course open for the next 25 years, according to the realtor who worked on the deal. Originally, Martin Valley Golf Course was a 27-hole course with separate 18-hole and nine-hole courses, depending on how much golfers wanted to play.

Eden Ramirez, public relations director for the La Joya ISD, explained the ninehole course will be closed and La Joya ISD will be building a sportsnasium at that location with track and swimming facilities. Ramirez said there might be a couple of holes left intact for practice purposes. In addition to maintaining the 18-hole course, La Joya ISD is planning to make improvements to the course to make it more appealing to play there. Tentative plans include adding landscaping to beautify the course, along with reworking some of the holes.

GOLF COURSES

From pg. 01 The top three courses Valleywide also took top honors as Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Courses in their respective areas as well. Tierra del Sol was the Upper Valley Favorite Golf Course, Tierra Santa was the Mid-Valley favorite and River Bend was the Lower Valley favorite of Winter Texans participating in the survey. All Winter Texans participating in the survey by casting a vote for their favorite RGV golf courses were entered into a drawing for a $150 prize. The winner of the drawing is Joe Rose of Paradise Park in Pharr. Joe participated in the balloting online, since he is still up north braving the cold. But he said he would be down in the Valley very soon, so we’ll present him with his prize money when he arrives. Congratulations Joe Rose! And congratulations to the Top Ten Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Courses!

Texas Outdoor Life ranks best RGV golf courses

According to a survey conducted by Texas Outdoor Life found on the Internet several Rio Grande Valley Golf Courses were ranked among the best in the state. The top ranked Valley golf course according to the survey was Los Lagos in Edinburg with a rating of 8.9 stars. It was referred to as “ a rollercoaster ride up and down contoured fairways with plenty of water and lots of bunkers.” River Bend Resort Golf Club in Brownsville was rated 8.6. According to the survey, the course has great rates, good conditions, some demanding and unique holes and it was “a blast to play some holes along the Rio Grande River.” Tierra Santa in Weslaco was rated 8.5 by the survey. The survey said the course was “an outstanding links course with mounding swales, lots of water, huge bunkers and big greens.” The survey said the greens were possibly in the best condition of any Valley course. Palmview Golf Course in McAllen was given a rating of 8.3. The survey said it was “one of the best municipal courses in Texas with surprising elevation changes and so fun and challenging holes.” South Padre Island Golf Club in Laguna Vista also received an 8.3 ranking. The survey said “the front nine is fantastic with some great holes along the Laguna Madre Bay with view of South Padre Island.” Rancho Viejo Resort El Diablo got a rating of 8 stars. The survey indicated

the course was not as difficult as the name implied. “It is a pretty straight forward layout giving players a chance for an enjoyable round.” Rancho Viejo Resort El Angel received 7.8 stars. The survey mentioned the resort’s two golf courses and said El Angel was “shorter and easier…with forgiving fairways, big greens and some great par 3s. Tony Butler Golf Course in Harlingen received a 7.5 rating. According to the survey, “The course leverages natural terrain to create some good holes.” The survey said the Rio Grande Valley has more playable days for golfers than anywhere else in the nation, losing no more than 25 days a year. While the summers are hot, winter temperatures are mild, with temperatures usually ranging from 60 to 70 degrees. The Rio Grande Valley golf courses are also known for their reasonable rates, making golf an activity all can enjoy.
