LOCATION
With a population within the City limits of just over 41,000 and approximately 80,000 in the “greater” Winter Haven area, Winter Haven is one of the fastest growing communities in the country. We are located at the center of Florida’s super region, an area that spans from Tampa to Daytona that generates $300 billion per year in economic activity, making the super region the 9th largest economy in the United States. Winter Haven is directly between two major metropolitan areas – Tampa and Orlando – and therefore offers a short drive to either city’s amenities, but at home in Winter Haven you can enjoy lower cost of living, less traffic and a more cohesive community. While it is just a 45-minute drive to either metro, we are certainly not
TER HAVEN a bedroom community, as we have an economy built both on small business and entrepreneurs as well as large industry. Florida is known as the Sunshine State and Winter Haven is no exception. For the vast majority of the year we experience mild climate, blue skies, sunshine and light breezes. We are in Florida though, so the occasional shower can occur, especially in the hotter summer afternoons. A little shower provides the perfect time to experience our indoor attractions and cultural venues.
HISTORY
The first settlers arrived in Winter Haven in the 1860’s. By 1885, the village was named by P.D. Eycleshimer. While many lived in the vicinity, such as the Eycleshimers, Sykes, Jacksons and Inmans, the first official residents of the village after it was platted were F.A.K. Harris and his wife Adele, who built the first commercial and residential structure downtown in 1885.

Our famous chain of canal-connected lakes was started in 1915 and completed in the early 1920’s. Along with the Chain of Lakes, the 1920’s boom brought rapid growth throughout Florida, and eventually, serious economic turmoil. Winter Haven was not exempt. Citrus and other agricultural crops were the early economic mainstays. In 1930, a 22-year-old George Jenkins would start the First Publix Super Market chain here on Fourth Street NW. In 1936, a gregarious promoter named Dick Pope opened Cypress Gardens on Lake Eloise. Pope brought intense publicity to Florida, Winter Haven and his beloved park. The Pope family sold Cypress Gardens in 1985. For 73 years it entertained more than 50 million people. In October 2011, Merlin Entertainments Group opened LEGOLAND® Florida on the historic site, and the Cypress Gardens botanical gardens are leased to, and beautifully maintained by them. Winter Haven’s history is being preserved at the Museum of Winter Haven history located on Lake Howard and Pope Avenue in the historic Woman’s Club.

Soaring 205 feet above the hillside, Bok Tower is the exquisite centerpiece that makes Bok Tower Gardens a majestic and soul-nourishing paradise. The marble and coquina rock tower is home to a 60bell carillon and surrounded by more than 700 acres of groves, flowers, meadows, endangered plants and protected lands. Opening in 1929 as a gift to the American people from the Dutch immigrant Edward Bok, the tower still rings out every half hour and at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., a carillonneur plays a concert with various musical selections. Bok Tower Gardens also includes a children’s garden and play area, an outdoor kitchen and edible garden and paved paths for easier access to all visitors. They host hundreds of special events throughout the year including their most popular, Sunset and Symphony, Boktoberfest and Christmas at Pinewood.

Professional basketball is officially here in Polk County. In December 2016, the Orlando Magic and the NBA G League announced that the Magic had purchased the Erie BayHawks with plans to relocate the team to Florida. Having the team so close to its parent club helps the Magic develop players and evaluate talent. The Lakeland Magic play at the RP Funding Center in nearby Lakeland and will soon call Winter Haven home as well. The Magic have plans to practice in the brand new state-of-the-art field house slated to open in 2019. Their season consists of a 50-game regular season: 24 home, 24 away, and 2 neutral site games at the annual G League Showcase, and runs from November through March. With the same level of professionalism and entertainment as a traditional NBA game, the Lakeland Magic provide guests with a unique family-friendly experience. SUN ’n FUN is an aviation experience like no other! SUN ’n FUN started as an annual event for aviation exhibits, air shows, aircraft displays, and opportunities to further aviation education. SUN ’n FUN still holds their annual 6-day Sun ‘n Fun FlyIn event in April, the second largest airshow in the country, but now they also offer so much more. The rest of the year is full of private and public events ranging from educating students with “fly ’n learn” curriculum, to giving museum tours at their

SUN ’n FUN gives guests a chance to experience aviation from the ground up, exposing them to the rich history and future of aviation in Florida and the world. Hover over Florida orange groves, our beautiful lakes and see the sunset in a new way. After liftoff, your pilot will even let you take over and fly the plane yourself! You can go high, low, fast or slow. Either way, Preston Aviation is a great way to experience aviation! Winter Haven is also the future home of the Seaplane Pilots Association. Because of our access to over 55 lakes in Winter Haven, we have become
the training ground for seaplane pilots, driven primarily through Jack Brown’s Seaplane Base at the Winter Haven Regional Airport (KGIF).

Beyond the hustle and bustle of the theme parks, Winter Haven’s natural beauty and appeal can’t be understated. Protected trails and parks are located in every direction, allowing for opportunities to learn, explore, have a picnic or even camp! Visit Circle B Bar Reserve for the chance to see bald eagles, hundreds of gators, turtles, birds, rabbits and much more! Circle B is also home to the Nature Discovery Center where families can learn about the animal and plant species that are indigenous to our part of Florida. Westgate River Ranch and Rodeo offers camping sites, tee-pee camping, glamping in airconditioned tents and regular hotel rooms. There are numerous hiking trails, horseback riding trails, airboat rides and a Saturday night rodeo for families to enjoy!

The Florida Sports Hall of Fame keeps much of its memorabilia on display at the Central Florida Visitors Information Center, located just a short drive from Winter Haven. There you can also buy Florida themed gifts and discounted attraction tickets to most Central Florida attractions. At Lake Myrtle Sports Complex there is also the Polk County Sports Hall of Fame which showcases our own community’s sports stars. You may not get your own feet wet in Winter Haven, but you can learn the history of those who have by waterskiing their way into the Water Ski Hall of Fame! This museum experience offers a look at the legacy left by those champions who dared to don skis and those who skied on their bare feet! The relatively young sport dates from 1922. Champions and their waterskiing records, many of which were set right here in Winter Haven, are on display. The Water Ski Hall of Fame is relocating to the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in 2018.

DOWNTOWN I Downtown is the heart of the Winter Haven community. It is our stage for delicious food, amazing music, innovative businesses, shopping, local favorites and cultural arts. Some residents joke that it is our very own Epcot World Showcase in terms of dining options which include Italian cuisine, Louisiana inspired menus, southern BBQ, locally owned coffee shop,Thai food, Sushi and Japanese inspired menus, American favorites, Mexican, bakeries, healthy smoothies and much more. Downtown Winter Haven is also full of opportunities to be exposed to rich art and cultural experiences. From the various murals peeking through the alleyways and sides of buildings, to the music filling the streets from Gram Parson’s Derry Down and other local venues, Winter Haven is a platform to showcase local artists. Each year our downtown is home to up to ten sculptures, part of the Florida Outdoor Sculpture Invitational. We also have a cultural arts advisory committee through the City of Winter Haven that recently commissioned local artists to paint all the electrical boxes in downtown Winter Haven.

Our local theatre, Theatre Winter Haven, is an awardwinning theatre that continues to enrich the lives of residents and visitors with its talented actors, experienced staff and exceptional productions. In 2017, Theatre Winter Haven won eight awards through BroadwayWorld Orlando as well as took the top honor at the Southeast Theatre Conference. They are Florida’s most awarded community theatre and a local favorite that transports you to the streets of Broadway with musicals, plays and special performances. Downtown’s historic Ritz Theatre also offers a variety of shows and musical performances. Polk State College is involved in theatrical performances and musical productions, along with student– created visual arts that are showcased throughout the year.
IS OUR STAGE Winter Haven’s musical history boasts hometown artists like Jim Stafford and Gram Parsons, and its present day also includes young artists making their mark. From open mic nights to concerts, Gram Parson’s Derry Down gives everyone a chance to be a part of Winter Haven’s musical soul. Many of our downtown restaurants and bars also host live music Thursday through Sunday or special musical concerts and festivals. Ridge Art Association and Outer Space Art Gallery and Studio are both great galleries for those who prefer more visually artistic experiences. No matter where you choose to be exposed to music, arts and culture, Winter Haven has a multitude of venues to choose from. Downtown is also our literal stage for events, festivals, art shows, car shows, farmer’s markets and family events. Main Street Winter Haven presents many of these such as Oktoberfest, Art Walk, Craft Beer Crawl and Carols in the Park in December. Annually, the Chamber of Commerce presents CommunityFest and Taste of Winter Haven. CommunityFest gives families a chance to attend a FREE festival with games, food and entertainment. Taste of Winter Haven is an evening event that gives guests an opportunity to taste local fare, craft beer and wine. Winter Haven is truly a center for community events, thriving fine art and diverse culture.

We in Winter Haven get to experience lakeside lifestyle like no other location. With 24 canal-connected lakes, 55 lakes that touch the City of Winter Haven and 554 lakes in Polk County, there is pretty much a lake where ever you look. You can literally travel from one side of Winter Haven to the other and never leave your boat. Canal connectivity means countless hours of water skiing, boating, fishing, paddle boarding, kayaking, tubing, flyboarding and wakeboarding. Since 1922, water-skiers have been leaving their mark on Winter Haven history for all to see. In 1936 when Dick Pope opened Cypress Gardens theme park one of the main attractions was the show skiers. Today, LEGOLAND® Florida Resort carries on that tradition with several LEGO® themed shows per day on Lake Eloise. In 2012, a former show skier for Cypress Gardens, Mark Voisard, started the Cypress Gardens Water Ski team to help carry on Winter Haven’s legacy for training show skiers. Today this troupe of athletes travels the state performing and competing and does a free performance the third Saturday of every month on Lake Silver in downtown Winter Haven. Winter Haven is also home to several ski schools and wakeboarding schools. In 2018, Lake Myrtle Sports Park in neighboring Auburndale will be home to a cable ski park as a part of the relocation of the Water Ski Hall of Fame. But the Lakeside Lifestyle doesn’t stop at water recreation. Winter Haven offers many waterfront restaurants that give you seamless views of our beautiful orange, purple and red sunset skies. We have 91 miles of shoreline in Winter Haven, mostly developed as residential living, but we do have some commercial properties and pubic spaces on the lakes. The most notable recent addition is that of the Lake Howard Walking Trail which starts on W Central Avenue and Lake
ESTYLE Howard Drive and goes to Ave G NW and Lake Howard Drive. This 1.5 mile path is perfect for the leisurely stroller, the 5K trainee or the cyclist adding it to their trail route. Lake Cannon, Shipp, Hartridge and Maude all also have parks on them, some with playgrounds For the ultimate lakeside lifestyle at home, check with our local realtors for the lastest listings. City parks, trails and other recreational amenities have grown significantly throughout the past decade. There is ample access to our lakes for boaters and our parks offer a variety of recreational and exercise options. There is a downtown jogging club called the Society of the Turtle that runs the first and third Wednesdays of the month October – May. We also have a robust cycling community and the Winter Haven Cycle Club which has standard rides out of the Bike Shop of Winter Haven each Saturday and Sunday. If your children are into sports, no worries there, you can be at a different sport every night from swimming, football and soccer, to name a few. Polk County has a long history as a warehousing and logistics hub as it has access to Interstate 4, Highway 27 and Highway 60, all of which traverse the state in various directions. This makes it easy for truck traffic to make it’s way to sea ports on both the east and west coast as well as to two major international airports in Tampa and Orlando. In 2017, our neighboring airport in Lakeland opened a customs center and is able to accept international shipments. Perhaps the addition that cemented Winter Haven as a logistics hub was the opening of the CSX’s Central Florida Intermodal Logistics Center. The technologically advanced intermodal center opened in spring of 2014 and makes Winter Haven one of the main hubs of product distribution by rail. This addition opens up numerous opportunities for businesses looking to expand their markets to the 18 million residents and visitors within 4-hours of Winter Haven, as well as the global economy through access to the Florida ports. Winter Haven is also home to its own regional general aviation airport. Several businesses are located on the grounds of the airport for aircraft maintenance and training with more plans for build out on the site for additional aviation related businesses.

The economy of Winter Haven has greatly diversified over the past several decades. Agribusiness, and in particular the citrus industry, was the main economic driver for most of the 20th century. However, economic development efforts directed at diversifying the

Today’s economy has dominant sectors including healthcare, technology, tourism, professional and financial services, education, agribusiness and, as mentioned above, distributions and logistics. Technology: The presence of considerable fiber optic infrastructure in downtown Winter Haven has led to the growth of a technology sector that employs more than 500 people. From software and blogging platform development to Internet security and secure inland data storage, downtown Winter Haven hosts this rapidly developing segment. Agribusiness remains a big part of the area’s economy as Polk County consistently ranks among the top citrus production counties. Currently the industry is reeling from the effects of citrus greening that causes the fruit to not develop fully and drop from the tree prematurely. Some growers are diversifying to other crops such as peaches and blueberries.

ED PRE K-12 EDUCATION Winter Haven has a variety of educational options for your family no matter what stage of life or educational development. We are a part of the Polk County Public Schools. The school district is the eighth largest in Florida and thirtieth largest in the United States. Polk County Public Schools has more than 170 schools. The student enrollment exceeds 100,000 with a diverse student body. The Winter Haven area has numerous public elementary schools, three middle schools, two high schools and several magnet, choice and charter public schools. Polk County Public Schools boasts over 100 career academics which focus on careers from veterinary medicine to marketing to robotics and more. These academics offer students the opportunity to learn about specific fields while in middle and high school and offer small learning communities supported by local subject matter experts on an advisory committee.

We are also privileged to have premier private schools that meet the needs of many of our families as well as a strong home schooling network and a Montessori pre-school and Pre K- 8th grade school. The Greater Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce launched an Educational Outcomes initiatives to determine ways the community may become involved in the public-school system and help to improve the educational outcomes of our students. As a direct result, the Winter Haven Public Education Partnership (PEP) was formed comprising of educators, teachers, business leaders, elected officials and citizens. This groundbreaking community action resulted in a call-toaction for citizens passionate about improving educational outcomes for our children. Since then they have opened an after school tutoring center in Northeast Winter Haven, a Career Connection mentoring program and launched the Cambridge Academy at Winter Haven High School (an accelerated method of academic study). Polk State College was founded in 1964 to serve higher education needs of Polk County Over the years, the College has undergone tremendous growth and change. Today, the College annually serves more than 24,000 credit and non-credit students in locations through Polk County and offers both associates degrees as well as fully accredited bachelor’s degrees including Nursing, Criminal Justice, Education, Aerospace Sciences and a Bachelors of Applied Science. Winter Haven is the home of Polk State College’s first permanent campus with 20 buildings on a 99 acre site overlooking beautiful Lake Elbert and includes the College’s district offices. Other locations include Lakeland, Lake Wales and Bartow. Polk State outranks all other Florida State College System institutions in jobplacement, well exceeding the statewide job placement average of 74%. In fact 95.5% of Polk State students graduate with a job or with plans for advanced education. The Polk State Corporate College and Clear Springs Advanced Technology Center continue to specialize in the creation and delivery of customized education and training programs. In 2016, Polk State opened their technologically immersive Center for Public Safety in Winter Haven. This 101,450 squarefoot center allows for all of the first responder training to be done under one roof including police and fire, EMT and paramedics, criminal science and more.

Winter Haven Hospital joined the BayCare network of hospitals in 2013 to better address changes in healthcare delivery. Over the last 4 years Baycare has invested almost $150 million in facilities to upgrade the Winter Haven Women’s Hospital, Cassidy Cancer Center, imaging equipment and a new $51 million emergency department. They have also announced putting together a medical residency program in family medicine that will begin in 2019.
