Endowing our Next Century of Impact The Winston-Salem Foundation is a community foundation comprised of hundreds of charitable funds created by individuals, families, nonprofits, and businesses. We were established in 1919 with an initial investment of $1,000 by our founder Col. Francis Fries. We are among the nation’s oldest community foundations, and we were the first foundation of any type to be established in the state of North Carolina. Since then, thousands of generous individuals have partnered with us to improve the quality of life in Forsyth County, its surrounding areas, and beyond. We help strengthen the community in four broad areas:

PHILANTHROPIC SERVICES – assisting individuals and organizations with their charitable giving

COMMUNITY GRANTS – making grants to local nonprofit organizations STUDENT AID – providing college scholarships to local students COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP – connecting partners, resources, and ideas to create positive community change

THE NEXT CENTURY As we look forward to our second century of service to Forsyth County, we are renewing our commitment to increase permanent charitable assets that will benefit this community. The needs of Forsyth County are certain to change in the future, and an endowed fund is a permanent resource that can adapt to any changing circumstances. That’s the unique power of endowments over other charitable vehicles — they can benefit our community forever!

Why Partner with the Foundation? CREATE A CHARITABLE LEGACY. Establish an endowed fund in your name that best fits your charitable goals, and your generosity becomes flexible, immediately consequential, and benefits the community forever. Your impact will be felt for generations to come.

COLLECTIVE IMPACT. By pooling your funds with those of other charitably-minded individuals and organizations, we’re able to maximize investment returns while reducing administrative costs, enabling more effective progress toward a stronger and healthier community. There’s strength in plotting our course together.

STRATEGIC GRANTMAKING. Create effective and lasting community improvement. With deep roots in Forsyth County, the Foundation can target your resources to make the greatest impact on varying opportunities and challenges as they present themselves over time.

PHILANTHROPIC ENGAGEMENT. We are experts in working with donors and families to design grantmaking programs tailored to help them meet their charitable objectives. We can help you learn more about the issues most important to you, and we can connect you with impactful organizations and resources.

TAX BENEFITS. As a 501(c)(3) organization, we offer the highest level of tax benefits for charitable giving, and we accept many types of assets including cash, securities, life insurance, closely-held stock, real estate, partnership interests, and deferred gifts. We also frequently partner with professional advisors on overall financial and estate planning.

The Power of Endowment The power of an endowment is in its continuity.

UNRESTRICTED FUND FOR COMMUNITY GRANTS Supports strategic Community Grants that respond to the community’s ever-shifting challenges and opportunities as they unfold in the future. For example, healthrelated issues that have moved to the forefront in recent years — such as autism and opioid addiction — could not have been foreseen 10 or 20 years ago, much less in 1919. And other diseases, such as tuberculosis, are no longer a local health threat. Community Grantmaking funds give the Foundation the flexibility to respond to a variety of issues as they impact our community over time.

When you create an endowed fund, you ensure lasting community impact through a permanent charitable fund. Your gift is invested over time, and a percentage of the fund’s market value is used annually to make charitable grants. Your gift is preserved forever, with the funds pooled for maximum benefit and invested to achieve long-term capital growth.

FIELD OF INTEREST FUND FOR COMMUNITY GRANTS

Your gift — and all future earnings from your gift —  are a perpetual source of charitable community capital. And your legacy is preserved for generations to come.

Provides the Foundation with more specific Community Grantmaking support in an area of your interest, including arts and culture, community and economic development, education, environment, health, or human services.

STUDENT AID FUND

HOW DOES AN ENDOWED FUND GROW?

Awards scholarships to local students as they pursue higher education. Selection criteria can be customized or general in nature.

A charitable gift made today can significantly multiply in value if established as a permanent endowment. The drawing below illustrates how a $50,000 gift can grow exponentially in just 50 years.

DONOR-ADVISED FUND Enables you to support charitable organizations that are addressing issues of importance to you, both locally and beyond. Offers easy set-up and administration and can involve a second generation of advisors before being converted to another fund type. (We also offer donor-advised funds that are non-endowed.)

By year 50, this endowed fund’s cumulative charitable impact would increase from $50,000 to almost $325,000, tripling in size and having granted to the community more than three times its original fund value!

DESIGNATED FUND Specifies particular charitable organizations to receive income from your endowed fund in perpetuity.
