NSIC THE HISTORY OF THE NSIC From its modest origin as a six-team alliance nearly eight decades ago, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has matured into a 16-team union of upper Midwest colleges and universities to form arguably the strongest affiliation in NCAA Division II. The NSIC can trace its roots to 1932 when six schools, including Bemidji State University, Minnesota State University, Mankato, Minnesota State University Moorhead, St. Cloud State University, University of Minnesota Duluth and Winona State University signed on as charter members. All remain active subscribers of the league today. Southwest Minnesota State University was added in 1969, followed by Northern State University in 1978, Wayne State College (NE) in 1998, Concordia University-St. Paul and the University of Minnesota, Crookston in 1999, the University of Mary and Upper Iowa University in 2006, Augustana College in 2008 and Minot State University and the University of Sioux Falls in 2012. Minnesota State, St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth later left the league to join the North Central Conference but returned to the NSIC in 2008. University of Minnesota, Morris and Michigan Tech University were once part of the NSIC family as well. In 1992 the NSIC became a true athletic showcase for both men and women with the merger of the traditional Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) and the Northern Sun Conference (NSC), the home of women’s athletics since 1979. Before NSIC affiliates became certified for championship competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1995, its member institutions filled prominent roles in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). NIC and NSC clubs annually dispatched qualified student-athletes to national tournaments and captured several NAIA teams and individual championships. The NSIC celebrates its 81st season this year and clearly continues to make a major imprint nationally, winning 11 national titles since 2006. Winona State men claimed NCAA II Basketball Championships in 2006 and 2008 and narrowly missed a third crown, falling in a last second shot in 2007. In addition, the Warriors established a NCAA II record of 57 consecutive victories. Concordia University launched an ongoing streak of five consecutive NCAA II Volleyball Championships in 2007. In 2008 the Golden Bears won 37 straight matches after a season opening loss on their way to a second consecutive title and scripted a marvelous encore in 2009 with a perfect 37-0 finish, a third straight national crown and a winning streak of 74 straight matches. In 2010 the Golden Bear extended that win streak to 75 before dropping their second match of the season. They started 2010 with a 10-4 record before ripping off 22 straight wins on their way to their fourth straight national title. In 2011, after overcoming midseason injuries, the Golden Bears hit their stride. The Golden Bears knocked off No. 1 and undefeated Cal State San Bernardino to become the first team in the history of NCAA Division II women’s volleyball, to captured a fifth consecutive NCAA Division II Championship. In a most surprising run, Minnesota Duluth completed a perfect 15-0 season by winning the 2008 NCAA Division II Football Championship. The Bulldogs, limited to only 24 scholarships by league rule, swept a field of fully-funded teams, including top ranked Grand Valley State and number three Northwest Missouri State. Two years later in 2010 the Bulldogs repeated that feat, going 15-0 again to win the national championship. The Bulldogs became the first NCAA DII football squad to win two national championships with undefeated records. Minnesota State added more luster to the league by finishing 32-2 and claiming the 2008-09 NCAA II Women’s Basketball Championship. The Mavericks rolled to a wild 103-94 victory over Franklin Pierce to set a NCAA record for total points in the title game. Augustana College got into the mix of national championships in 2011 when their women’s cross country team turned in a true team performance in Spokane, Wash. All five Viking runners earned All-American status as Augustana won the first cross country national championship in NSIC history. Since 2000, the NSIC has also participated in Mineral Water Bowl. Hosted by the Quarterback Club of Excelsior Springs, Mo., the Mineral Water Bowl matches the highest-finishing teams from the NSIC and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) not selected for the NCAA Division II football playoffs. In 2000, Winona State defeated Missouri Western State, 43-41, in triple overtime, for the Warriors first-ever NCAA II post-season win. The NSIC has also had five athletes awarded with the NCAA Elite 89 Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 89 championships. Earning the award were Ben Keller (Minnesota State, Baseball 2012), Cody Lensing (Augustana, Wrestling 2012), Kendra Huettl (Minnesota State, Softball, 2011), Matt Braithwaite (Augustana, Cross Country, 2010) and Lauren Brown (Winona State, Outdoor Track & Field, 2010). Member schools continue to emphasize the educational, entertainment and unifying value of sports while pointing with pride to the many advantages to be gained by attending these colleges and universities. The NSIC is committed to providing rewarding experiences for its student-athletes, and while the challenges that loom are sizable, indeed, the NSIC is surely well positioned for the future.

Winona State

SEASON OUTLOOK

Winona State will spend its 2012 season trying to prove that eight is not enough. The Warriors wrapped up their eighth consecutive NSIC regular season title a season ago and have their sights set on a ninth. A 14-4-1 overall record was good enough to win the conference title but did not get WSU into the NCAA postseason, a place the team has been three times in the last five years. If the Warriors are to win a ninth consecutive conference championship - and 12th in the last 15 seasons - they will have to rely on a small but battle tested group of upperclassmen and a talented cadre of freshmen and sophomores ready to make their mark. The Warriors will be tasked with replacing a two-time All-American goalkeeper in Anna Belpedio and the team’s top two scorers from a season ago, but are still set up to finish atop the league standings in November. THE OFFENSE Depth will not be an issue for Winona State. The Warriors enter the season with 32 players on their roster, each one able to contribute on the soccer field. The Warrior offense will have to replace its top two scorers but should get a boost from junior Jennifer DeRoo. DeRoo had a breakout season as a freshman in 2010, scoring 11 goals on her way to NSIC Newcomer of the Year, but suffered an injury early during her sophomore season and was limited to one goal in seven games played. Her healthy return will be music to the ears of midfielders Katy Soliday and Samantha Fegen, a pair of excellent distributors who each handed out six assists last season. Senior Anna Lundeen battled injuries last season but returns healthy and ready for a final campaign. Sophomores Alaina Kne and Taylor Zehren made an impact during their rookie seasons, scoring three goals each. Junior Hadley Bales saw her playing time increase last season and responded with a goal and an assist from the midfield while Amanda Bergstedt added a goal during her freshman season. Jenna Jares, Cailyn McCauley and Shauna Rodman - all sophomores - will be looked to for increased impact after spending a full season in the Warrior program. The list of newcomers ready to help the Warrior offense is long as well. WSU signed a large recruiting class and is hoping for immediate contributions from many of the newcomers. Freshmen Sam Armondo, Kati Baker, Mehan Bolton, Kaitlin Halvorson, Caitlin Lilly, Devon Richards, CoCo Sames, Sammi Van de Linde and sophomore Kristin Maynard are first year players who will be given an opportunity to make an impact on the field in their opening season on the WSU squad. THE DEFENSE Winona State employed a suffocating defense in 2011, spearheaded by Belpedio, a two-time All-American who ended her career with nearly every goalkeeping record on the team’s books. The Warriors allowed just 11 goals a season ago, posting an eight game streak without allowing a goal during conference play. The team also outscored its opponents 26-2 during NSIC action. Replacing Belpedio will be a tall task, but WSU will bring three goalkeepers into camp in hopes of finding its next starter. Alexandria Vial is a sophomore who played in one game during the 2011 season while backing up Belpedio. She is joined in camp by freshmen Chelsea Metzger and Iris Ostrovsky.

Whoever wins the goalkeeping competition will have an outstanding defense in front of her. Only once did the Warriors give up more than one goal during the 2011 season and there is a strong group of defenders back to help the Warriors keep their opponents off the scoreboard. Juniors Morgan LeFebvre, Rebecca McCoy and Nikole Porter anchor the team’s defense, along with senior Jamie Babetch. That group provides valuable experience that has been won during hard fought NSIC contests. McCoy can also provide a kick-start to the offense, scoring a goal and handing out an assist last season. Sophomore Amanda Canner played in eight games last year before suffering an injury and will be counted on to increase her roll on the field. Freshmen Kelsey Foss, Madalyn Jansen, Sydney Knutson and Lisa Manski will all get looks when camp begins and be given an opportunity to contribute immediately for the Warriors. THE OUTLOOK After falling just short of the NCAA Division II Playoffs last year, the Warriors are aiming to return to the postseason. The team has set up an ambitious early schedule to test the team, traveling to Missouri for matchups against Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State. WSU’s attention will then turn to a conference slate that has early home games against Minnesota Duluth, St. Cloud State and the University of Mary. The schedule builds to a final weekend that will see the Warriors travel to Minnesota State on Oct. 26 and host Concordia-St. Paul on Oct. 28, matchups that could determine seeding in the conference tournament and even who will end the year as the league’s champion.

The Ali Omar File Years at Winona State: 18th season Record at Winona State: 241-79-20 (.738) College: Winona State 1992 (B.S. Management Information Systems) One of the most successful coaches in the nation, Ali Omar has transformed the Winona State soccer program into a powerhouse that has set the standard for all other teams in the NSIC to follow. In 17 seasons at the helm of the Warrior program, Omar has led the team to 11 NSIC Championships and six NSIC Tournament titles. His Warriors have won the last eight conference crowns and have been named champions in ten of the last 12 years.

Ali Omar

Omar is ninth on the NCAA Division II all-time victory charts with 241 wins. He is 11th all-time in winning percentage, earning victories at a .738 clip and is the winningest coach in the history of the NSIC.

Head Coach

Omar has been the Winona State head coach since 1995, the first year of competition for the Warrior soccer program. After winning just one game during the inaugural campaign, the Warriors have been a standard for success. The team has not finished under .500 since and has lost three or fewer games eight times. Omar has been named NSIC Coach of the Year four times (2004, 2006, 2008, 2011) for his performance from the sidelines. Winona State has been truly dominant in NSIC play, posting a 132-11-7 (.903) mark in league games. WSU has had six undefeated conference seasons and another nine years with just one loss. Warrior players have consistently earned individual recognition under Omar. Nine WSU student-athletes have won the NSIC Player of the Year award, including a string of eight consecutive from 2002-09. Three Warriors have been NSIC Defensive Player of the Year and Omar has tutored two conference Newcomers of the Year. Omar has recruited some of the best soccer talent in the country and Warriors have the accolades to prove it. Eleven Warriors have been named AllAmericans while Omar has tutored 43 All-Region and 95 All-NSIC honorees. Winona State won its eighth consecutive conference title in 2011 after posting a 12-1 league record, with Omar earning his fourth NSIC Coach of the Year honor. Anna Belpedio was named an All-American for the second straight season after allowing just 11 goals in 19 games. The team also tied defending national champion and No. 1 team Grand Valley State, 1-1, the its season-opener. For all the success Omar has achieved at Winona State, the 2010 season may have been his best. Winona Sate posted a 17-4-2 overall record, winning both the NSIC Regular Season and Tournament titles. The Warriors also advanced to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the fourth time. Once there WSU made history, beating Regis (CO) to advance to the NCAA Super Regional for the first time. Goalkeeper Anna Belpedio earned First Team All-American honors while also being named NSIC Defensive Player of the Year. Freshman Jennifer Deroo was tabbed as the NSIC’s Newcomer of the Year while seven Warriors were all-conference selections. The Warriors posted a 17-5 mark and won the NSIC Regular Season title during 2009. Lauren Sturdivant was named NSIC Player of the Year and was a Second Team All-American after scoring 18 goals and handing out 11 assists. Omar won his 200th career game during the season, a 2-0 victory over Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 2. Omar and the Warriors set many marks during the 2008 season. The Warriors rose as high as third in the national rankings while earning a school record 16 consecutive victories. An outstanding defensive squad, Winona State held opponents scoreless for 1,093 consecutive minutes during the year on

its way to another conference title. The team finished 19-3-1 and advanced to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the second consecutive season. For his efforts Omar was named the NSIC Coach of the Year for the third time in 2008. The Warriors allowed just seven goals on the year and their save percentage of .918 was the second-best mark in NCAA Division II history.
