Mackenzie Glass Sees 20 Per Cent Growth In

Turnover In First Full Year Of Trading

gramme has included the purchase of a new Bottero 515LAMe laminated glass cutting table, delivered in July 2018 with an accompanying loading table, which gives Mackenzie Glass the capacity to handle 4.5m X 3.2m laminated sheets. “It’s not just the capacity that the Boterro gives us”, continued Mark. “It’s also the reduced heat up times – these are 90 seconds compared to 8-minutes before – which allows us to bring more flexibility to and to reduce our lead times. “We also introduced the capacity to cut fire glass in-house, which has also reduced lead times, which has proved important with the addition of Pyroguard to our offer.

Mackenzie Glass has reported growth in turnover at 20 per cent in its first full year trading under its new management team and as part of the newly created Cornwall Group. The independent glass merchant also said that it had seen a ‘Modest return to profit’, attributing growth to increased demand for laminates and the expansion of its product range, including the launch of a second line of fire-rated products. Mark Herbert, Joint Managing Director, Mackenzie Glass, said: “We started off in 2017 with a business that was turning over around £5million a year. We’ve taken that so that in June at the end of our financial year our turnover was topping £6million

ply of cut-to-size laminate and our new partnership with Pyroguard, which gives us a second leading fire rated glass range, in addition to our offer from Pilkington.” Mackenzie Glass was formed at the end of 2017 as stand-alone business and vehicle for the acquisition of Pilkington Bristol from NSG. It supplies more than 300 tonnes of glass each month. This includes a comprehensive range of products from Pilkington as a Pilkington Regional Partner, plus as an independent merchant, other float glass suppliers including Saint Gobain, Guardian, AGC and most recently, Pyroguard.

“We’ve picked up some new customers along the way but for the most part growth has been driven by the expansion of our product range.

Acquisition has been followed by an investment programme which has included the expansion of its product and service offer; the purchase of a new fire saw, CNC, specialist lorries as well as, major investment in new IT infrastructure and its apprenticeship scheme.

“This has included increased sup-

“We’re fiercely proud of our relationship with Pilkington. Pyrodur and Pyrostop are market leading ranges. The addition of Pyroguard, however, gives us a broader reach and the ability to supply a second market-leading brand.” Glass shortages in the last 12-months also according Mackenzie Glass further buoyed its growth. “We were largely unaffected because of the relationship that we have with Pilkington and other leading glass suppliers this helped us to resist the need to follow other independent merchant and import glass from non European suppliers. “The first half of this year so far has been perhaps a little tougher and clarity on the UK’s future relationship with Europe is now desperately needed. “I’m confident, however, that we have the right infrastructure and people in place – and hopeful, that when that clarity comes, it will release a latent demand for product.” www.mackenzieglass.co.uk

24/7 Service From Norseal

With Self Serve

Quickslide Rolls Out Double Shift Patterns In Response To High Demand West Yorkshire based fabricator, Quickslide, has announced that it has rolled out double shift patterns throughout its factories, a move that is designed to further improve its service offering, as well as ensure it is best placed to cater for a significant upturn in sales orders for all its market leading products.

Quickslide, which manufactures a complete range of PVC-U and aluminium windows and doors, first introduced a double shift working pattern in January 2019 due to high demand for its authentic, high-performance heritage style vertical sliders. The company reports that this has proved to be highly successful and has enabled it to further enhance its service to trade partners by offering improved lead times, even during particularly busy periods. And now that the increased vertical slider production has proven to be so beneficial, Quickslide has expanded the option of double shift patterns to both its aluminium and PVC-U casement facilities, giving the company the ability to uplift capacity – factory wide – as and when it is required.

Tom Swallow, Sales & Marketing Director commented: “With a double shift pattern operating in our vertical slider facility, we were able to offer a low cost three-day express lead time on a selection of our VS products even during our busy summer months. This allowed us not only to sustain a competitive advantage within the wider industry, but also means that we are now well prepared for periods of high-volume output later in the year as well. “By extending the option of double shifts to our other factories, we are now also very well positioned to respond to the demand for our aluminium offering, which has been bolstered by the ongoing upturn in popularity for aluminium products. Furthermore, should the need arise, we can now significantly increase the output of our new range of Deceuninck PVC-U products that were introduced earlier this year, and which include the 2800 Storm Sash casement windows and doors, Slider 24+ sliding patio doors and G-Award winning Heritage flush sash windows and doors.” www.quickslide.co.uk

GGF Annual

Report Reflects

Strength And

Stability The Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has released its Annual Report 2019 reporting on the activity and performance of the Federation for the year ending 31st December 2018.

The report covers a year that saw the GGF gain a record 67 new members during a year of change, influence and preparation as the regulations and standards came under Government scrutiny due to the inquiry in the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy and the UK’s pending exit from the European Union. The GGF’s increased support for consumer-facing members was evident with MyGlazing.com achieving record audience numbers of over 200,000 homeowners. In addition, the report also highlighted the outstanding background work of the GGF technical team and the ongoing political activity the Federation carried out during the period. The accounts yet again showed the organisation’s formidable financial strength and stability. John Agnew, GGF President commented, “Following a difficult transitional year, the GGF has ensured it maintains its position as the leading trade organisation in the industry.” www.ggf.org.uk 6 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019

In June, Clearview Glaziers were one of the first fabricators to manufacture Stellar, the brand new aluminium window and door system from Epwin Window Systems. Four months on, Robin Squibb of Clearview Glaziers is delighted with the results and reports: “We have found the Stellar window and door system a breath of fresh air to fabricate. It seems like aluminium windows should have always been this way. No horrible adapters everywhere just clean, neat lines. It really is straightforward to manufacture. We are delighted.” But it isn’t just the fabrication process where Stellar is delivering for Clearview. Robin said: “We have offered our customers choice between some of the highest branded names in the aluminium game, but they have chosen the Stellar system every time due to its clean, modern aesthetics. This has put us way ahead of the competition and in a crowded market, this is great news for our business and our customers.” Clearview Glaziers is based in Peterborough and works in the domestic, trade and com-

Stellar was designed from scratch to deliver the next generation of aluminium windows and doors with no compromise. It is aimed at the retail and light commercial sectors and, as Robin reports, has everything those sectors demand. For example, it has the slimmest sightlines on the market – it’s at least 30% slimmer than the main competing systems and has a 12% larger glass area. Plus, it’s the only aluminium system on the market to offer a Fully Flush Casement Window, with flush lines inside and out, says the company. As Robin and his team are experiencing, the system was designed to be simple and easy to manufacture and install. For example, it’s a unique patent-pending pre-gasketed system that saves up to 20% on fabrication time and has patent-pending knock-in beads that speed up glazing and leave a clean gasket line on the inside. Robin concludes: “As a company we are aiming to try and make our aluminium products as large as our PVC-U offer. We feel confident that we will achieve this because of the quality of Stellar and the support of Epwin Window Systems.” www.stellaraluminium.co.uk

Patiomaster North West Sees Strong Demand

For Triple-Track Patio Doors PatioMaster North West has reported strong sales growth for Triple-track patio doors in the last twelve months. Phillip Cresswell, Sales and Marketing Manager for the North West PatioMaster division, said: “The trend for wide apertures and large expanses of glass has never been stronger. We have seen a constant demand for Triple-track doors as installers take advantage of the growth in the market from homeowners looking to create the openhouse feel that is so on trend and which a Triple-track patio door can deliver.” The Triple-track door offers 25% more open space compared to a conventional sliding door and has the option of having two or four sliding sashes that stack neatly behind each other when opened without encroaching on the inside 8 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019

or outside of the property. It has a maximum aperture of six metres, making it the perfect solution for bigger projects. There’s also the added benefit of having stainless steel tracks that mean the doors open in a smooth single motion and have fewer moving parts than on bifold doors. The PVC-U construction and the choice of 28 colours and finishes, including grained and flat textures, plus the choice of white, gold, brass, chrome, black or silver handles mean the doors sit comfortably in more UK homes. Installation has been designed to be straightforward and simple. Features such as edge-located rollers mean easy adjustment and the door system works perfectly with standard cills and frame packers. There

is also a mechanically jointed version for hard to access locations. Part of the expert PatioMaster network, PatioMaster North West is based in Lancashire and serves a wide area from North Wales through Merseyside and all the way up to Carlisle. Installers will find the North West operation a professional, knowledgeable and friendly team who pride themselves on the quality of the patio doors they manufacture. Phillip concludes: “As part of the PatioMaster network we have a commitment to providing bespoke, precision made patio doors. We offer a rapid order turnaround with superb technical and product support. And for where additional peace of mind is a requirement, we offer a Secured by Design accredited door option too. The Triple-track door is a superb product and there has been more consumer interest in this product than anything previously, so we are not surprised that the demand for this product continues to grow.” www.patiomaster.co.uk

The Rise Of

Aluprof In The UK Established in the UK in 2006, Aluprof has grown in the UK to become one of the major players in the UK facade industry. With so many active facade systems companies operating in the UK, how did Aluprof succeed in taking a sizeable portion of the UK market? Wojciech Brozyna, MD of Aluprof UK, answers some of these questions:

So why break into the UK market when it was so well-established back in 2006? “In Poland we have always viewed the UK as a challenge for us, we knew that it would not be easy to set up and gain projects from a virtually unknown system such as ours. We had the benefit of logistics behind us, as we were already exporting from Poland to several other European countries and believed we had a good grasp of product delivery, 10 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019

offering an on time and complete order fulfilment. Added to the logistics, we had won several awards for our systems in Poland and believed that our product range could take on any other system currently available in the European market at that time. “The market crash in 2008 possibly helped us grow as fast as we did in the early years as fabricators in the UK looked for alternative systems which were a little more competitively priced. At this time we were ready with stocked product in Poland and planning two deliveries per week to the UK. As a result specifications were switched to Aluprof, we delivered on our promises and these early adopters of Aluprof systems continue to be valued customers today.” How did you penetrate the UK market in the early days being

virtually unknown? “We decided to send a small team over from Poland, which included myself and several other employees who knew our systems very well. We then interviewed and took on a small team of enthusiastic people who could also see the benefits in our systems and services. It is these early members of staff who promoted our systems and helped us gain our first projects. The majority of the original staff are still vital members of our team today. “To create awareness, we joined several associations in the UK and supported their meetings and events. Our approach was quite simple, we believed that our systems could stand up alongside any other system and perform as well, if not better than our competitors. We revealed the credibility of our offer which was enthusiastically accepted in the UK by specifiers and facade companies. The UK has always had a passion for European style systems and we did not disappoint!” Motel One – Glasgow

TRADE NEWS How have you kept up with the growth of Aluprof in the UK? “When we were looking at the UK back in 2005, we decided that a central base for our office and warehouse facility would be preferential, so we decided to settle in the Manchester area which gave us close access to all the major conurbations across the British Isles. From our initial offices and warehouse in Norman Road, Altrincham, we moved seven years ago to a new, larger unit at Altrincham Business Park. “Whilst we do carry some stock material in our Altrincham warehouse, most projects are supplied direct from our huge warehouse facility located in Bielsko-Biała. With just a two day shipping window, we continue to supply complete orders across to the UK on a weekly basis.” “In order to keep up with the growth and support our customers, four years ago we started to offer fabricated product as well as systems. This has gone down very well with our customers, as it has allowed them to take on larger projects and at the same time eased their own fabrication programming.” How have you persuaded specifiers to use your range of systems? “We have done little advertising and have relied on word of mouth and regular presence in the press by way of PR and editorial promoting our constantly growing portfolio of projects, however, the growth would not have been possible without our dedicated, customer facing, technical and procurement teams. With their extensive knowledge of the UK industry we communicated our strengths and most importantly, met our promises of support and delivery times. We also have an experienced back office team and R&D facility in Poland who offer a package of technical sup-

port. Honouring site deliveries with our fabricators has put us in place for future work on many projects and something we have capitalised on. “One of the growth systems in our portfolio has been our fire rated windows, doors and curtain wall systems. When we brought these systems to the UK, the market for fire rated aluminium systems was in its early growth cycle. By introducing these systems to specifiers, where there was a project requirement, has enabled us to range build with our other non-fire rated systems which offer a perfect match keeping the all important glazing sight-lines. I believe we still lead the field in this technology as currently we are the only systems company in the UK that can offer a cap-less fire rated curtain wall system, our MB SR50NEI EFEKT which is tested to EI60 and certified by Certifire warrington. What are your future plans for the UK “We have plans to double the offices and warehouse space this year in Altrincham to provide a showroom and media centre for specifiers. Together with this facility we also have an active office and ‘drop-in’ showroom at the Business Design Centre at Islington to support our growing number of specifiers using our systems in the South East. We also regularly interview for new staff as we continue to expand our team. New systems are also in the pipeline, some dedicated to the UK, but you will have to keep an eye out in the media for the launch of these new systems and services. I would say that we continue plan for future growth and strengthen our position as a strong, reliable supplier despite the UK being in uncertain times. www.aluprof.co.uk

Military Training With A Difference

When Nick Bailey was appointed to the role of Business Development Manager at Business Micros recently, he probably wasn’t expecting one of his first presentations to be at Dalton Barracks near Abingdon addressing a room full of senior army personnel.

But that’s exactly what happened when he was invited to speak at 4 Regiment Royal Logistics Corps’ Leadership Day and give an insight into how civilian organisations like Business Micros develop their staff.

Nick was one of the few speakers at the event not from a military background, so his perspective on managing and empowering staff was particularly well received. He spoke about the supportive culture at Business Micros and the emphasis placed on empowering staff and encouraging self-management of time and responsibilities. He said: “We take a very different approach to leadership than they do in the army, but I think we work just as hard to identify and develop our talent. We also offer huge amounts of support and encouragement which translates into a high calibre team and long-term retention of valuable staff. “The feedback from the army personnel who attended was very positive and I found the experience useful, learning from the other presentations which were focused on mentorship and understanding generation Z.”

MD Of Trims And Things:

“I wouldn’t Be Where I Am Without Freefoam.” After 25 years of trading, Yorkshire-based Trims and Things has grown to be a market-leading supplier of PVC-UE roofline products and building plastics. The company prides itself on its experience-based knowledge of products, so Freefoam’s continually evolving range of products and support have been a perfect fit – and the starting point for a twenty-year relationship. John Gough, Managing Director of Trims and Things, explains: “We’ve been using Freefoam exclusively since June 1999. We used another supplier for years, but the quality of its products had been starting to deteriorate and when we moved premises, it was an ideal opportunity to switch to Freefoam.” This year sees John set to retire after more than 25 years at the helm of Trims and Things. He has seen many changes in the industry, but 18 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019

praises Freefoam’s ability to adapt and meet customers’ demands while always maintaining the high quality of its products and service. “Freefoam has always been a progressive company and very good at listening to its customers. It was one of the first manufacturers to respond to the demand for colours and Anthracite Grey really kicked things in to gear. Offering a complete roofline package was a game-changer, and Freefoam’s product guarantees have steadily increased to today’s lifetime guarantee on white products. We’ve rarely needed to replace its product, but when this has happened, Freefoam had no qualms about providing a replacement and reimbursing the fitter for the installation. Similarly, Freefoam bent over backwards to resolve an issue I was having with deliveries at one point – they understand no-one can afford to disrupt an installation.”

John also points to the impact of technology and the internet on customers’ product knowledge as a major change in the industry. “People now are much more product-aware. Installers and even DIY-ers want to pick your knowledge on what, where and how to fit products, and it’s surprising how aware they are of the pinking problem. This means we need to be more aware too, and Freefoam is great on this front. I know if a customer came in wanting more specific details about a product, Freefoam could provide a full technical data sheet the same day. Even when you’re not directly on the phone to them, the marketing support is very useful – it’s helpful to have something you can give to customers.” “I wouldn’t be where I am without Freefoam. Its product range and support have helped Trims and Things to grow and thrive. The product is right, the support is right, and the company is right – you can tell Freefoam’s values are central to what they do. With Freefoam, I get the sense the company cares. That is rare amongst suppliers.” www.freefoam.com

Secondary Facility

For Roseview’s

Incarnation

Tradesmith

Offers Hand-Forged

Ironmongery By Well-known fabricator Roseview Windows has more than doubled the capacity of its Incarnation secondary glazing brand, by expanding into a new factory. Previously Incarnation operated from 2,500ft2, but now half of a new 11,000ft2 facility has been dedicated to manufacturing aluminium secondary glazing. The company has also invested more than £100,000 in new machinery and tooling, helping to meet rapidly growing demand. Paul Bygrave, director at Roseview Windows comments: “We started manufacturing secondary glazing seven years ago, largely as a service for our sash window customers. The idea was that we could help them win business on heritage projects where replacement windows weren’t permitted. “Since then interest in the heritage market, and thus demand for secondary glazing, has grown enormously. We were struggling to cope in our previous space so we took the decision to take things to the next level. “Secondary glazing is a traditional

product that hasn’t changed much in the last 40 years. Only a handful of companies made it, which has sometimes been reflected in poor customer service and lead times. Through this expansion we’re able to bring the Roseview philosophy to a product area that had gone a little stale, manufacturing high quality heritage products for trade and commercial customers, backed up by excellent service and technical backup.” The other half of the facility close to Roseview’s Buckinghamshire base has been set aside for new developments coming in 2020. Roseview managing director Richard Burrells comments: “Along with Incarnation’s expansion, we have exciting plans for our Rose Collection sash windows next year, including the launch of a new model. The extra space available at our new facility will help us to deliver those plans and increase overall capacity without interrupting our already busy production line.” For more information on Incarnation secondary glazing or Rose Collection sash windows, visit www.roseview.co.uk

Back for a seventh year, NHSM addresses a variety of safety related topics, offering advice and guidance on everything from smart locks, apps and cameras to high quality security furniture for doors and windows. During the month, Quickslide are keen to impress the heightened opportunities for installer customers to utilise the campaign to garner additional interest from homeowners by promoting their range of standard security features included on all products.

Ever keen to remain one of the leaders of innovation, Quickslide has recently changed its standard hardware on all aluminium sliding doors, with the handle now also benefitting from PAS24 approval. This development comes just ahead of an anticipatory introduction of a bifold which will also meet the flagship standard, with this pending new addition also meeting the PAS24 requirements for new builds when paired with a laminate glass upgrade.

Glazing Represented

At BRAC VEKA Recycling’s Simon Scholes explains the recycling processes to Councillor Gill Mercer and Peter Bone MP, during their visit to the company’s new Headquarters at Wellingborough.

VEKA Recycling Hosts Local Politicians At New HQ

The glazing industry is now being represented on the Building Regulations Advisory Committee (BRAC) which advises the Secretary of State in England on making Building Regulations and setting standards for building design and construction. This is welcome news given the upheaval around Building Regulations since the Grenfell Tower tragedy and the overall state of the construction industry. Chairman at Certass Ltd and Certass Trade Association, Jon Vanstone, says: “It is high time that glazing is represented at this level, so that our industry concerns, and achievements, can be shared at Government level and be considered properly with changes to Building Regulations. “Glazing is such an integral part of a building to get right, so it’s only right that there should be a glazing representative within BRAC.” www.certass.co.uk 24 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019

Drawn by the prospect of the jobs and sustainable production VEKA Recycling Ltd is bringing to Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, local politicians made a visit to the company’s new headquarters to learn more about one of the area’s newest employers.

The town’s Member of Parliament Peter Bone, accompanied by Northamptonshire County Councillor Gill Mercer, visited VEKA Recycling’s new site, which was established on the town’s Finedon Road Industrial Estate early in 2019. During the visit they learned how the plant is to become the most advanced of its type in Europe when it comes fully on stream next year. Simon Scholes, VEKA Recycling’s Managing Director, who found the site and is responsible for its development, showed the politicians how old PVC-U window and doorframes together with virgin offcuts, are re-processed at the plant and recycled into new products, including new window frames. Whilst currently operational with a process that reduces frames and other component materials into reusable polymer for a wide range of uses, some refinement of materials

continues to be dealt with by VEKA Recycling’s other plants in Germany and France. By the end of the year the plant will significantly add to the processing capacity of VEKA Recycling Group, Europe’s largest PVC window recycler, which is already in excess of 60,000 tonnes annually, representing more than 3.5 million windows. With an investment expected to exceed £10 million when completed, the Wellingborough factory will be self-sufficient by the middle of next year. Simon explained that Wellingborough was chosen for its central location, telling the visitors that the site “fits the bill perfectly.” With 60 people employed currently, more jobs will be created when VEKA Recycling goes fully on line. The MP, a Conservative and dedicated Brexiteer, was delighted to hear that VEKA Recycling’s German owners were committed to investment in the UK, irrespective of the outcome of Brexit, commenting “I actually think that these Brexit problems are non-existent.” veka-recycling.co.uk

Dan says: “Harriet’s strong desire to succeed came across at interview and that immediately impressed us. Her performance is backing up that desire and I’ve received nothing but great feedback from her customers.” Gareth Dix, who covers the Midlands, joined VBH in December, having spent several years at another hardware manufacturer within their internal sales team. DEAR GERALD

Dear

Gerald Dear Gerald I write with increasing concern that, despite the Equality and Human Rights Commission inquiry (EMHRC) in 2018 which reported that 365,000 disabled people say their home is not suitable for their needs, not enough is being done to deal with accessibility issue in UK homes. With a third of a million people needing urgent action for their properties to become more accessible and Part M requiring all new builds to be accessible, the industry has more opportunities to fit suitable entrance and double doors. Doors are such a big part of accessibility for homes, and to help combat this, Building Regulations Approved Document Part M offers guidance on new builds, stating that new dwellings need to be more accessible and adapted should they need to be. Don’t just think of entrance doors for accessibility, wider doors such as bifold and patio doors require larger accesses and low thresholds too, helping people with limited mobility move in and out of their properties. Low, compact and seamless thresholds are vital for ease of wheelchair access and for those with limited mobility. We have invested in our new FX15, the genuine Document Q (ADQ), Part M low threshold to meet Part M of Building Regulations and the Lifetime Homes standard requiring accessible doors to

Transforming Windows With Wood Effect Foils

Though wooden windows remain an attractive option for customers, continued innovation, improving technology and a wider choice of foils has resulted in uPVC establishing itself as an excellent cost-conscious option. With market demand growing for high-performing and aesthetically-appealing products, Clare Higgins, Product Manager at REHAU, looks into uPVC flush fit windows, and how they can exceed homeowner expectations.

Once regarded as less illustrious choice compared to wooden windows, the quality of uPVC has increased considerably 34 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019

since they first came into use over 25 years ago. These improvements have been mirrored in their rapidly growing popularity among homeowners as a cost-effective timber alternative, providing superior performance alongside an attractive look that blends in with a home’s exterior structure. Consumer demand for functional, stylish and flush-fitting solutions continues to grow apace, and with the market becoming increasingly discerning in their demands for practical yet eye-catching windows, installers and fabricators can find themselves in a challenging position. However, thanks

to new, pioneering advances in uPVC technology, it is possible to enjoy the rustic, eye-catching aesthetic of traditional timber window, while also reaping the security and energy-efficiency benefits of uPVC. Blurring the lines In the past, there was a clear distinction between window materials, with their accompanying advantages and disadvantages. For example, a real timber solution would be very aesthetically appealing, but could be very expensive to maintain. A uPVC solution, by contrast, was more cost-effective and provided excellent performance, but looked

out of place when fitted into period properties or homes aiming for a more traditional look. However, the evolution of uPVC has blurred these lines, busting preconceptions from the 1980s that the material was only available in white or a small range of foils. Manufacturers have now developed uPVC window foils that achieve an exceptional degree of photorealism when compared against their timber counterparts, while continuing to provide a sleek, flush finish that enhances a home’s kerb appeal. Considering customer preferences for traditional-looking materials, the importance of this new development cannot be overstated. Installers and fabricators offering uPVC windows are therefore in an excellent position to stand out among the competition, as they can provide practical, durable and aesthetically pleasing solutions to consumers. Wood effect foils The introduction of uPVC foils developed to be indistinguishable from traditional timber is transforming the market. Wood effect foils such as REHAU’s Turner Oak – Woodec, can pro-

vide a natural-looking effect that mirrors wood through its deeply embossed surface and matt top layer. Yet in contrast to wood, it is easy to clean and maintain, requiring no fresh paint or sanding during its service life. Woodec’s simple shades and patterns, combined with its use of bright, warm colours and realistic graining, gives consumers a tactile, high-quality finish that has been greatly inspired by Scandinavian style. The highly realistic wood frame look offered via such foils makes uPVC an appealing proposition for style-conscious homeowners looking for cost-effective solutions that offer excellent performance. Furthermore, wood effect foils can also be used as part of the home’s interior, providing a customer look to match the furnishing style. The convincing wood effect finish can help homeowners reconnect with nature without leaving the house, encouraging improved health and well-being. Innovative solutions Woodec is available with REHAU’s new Rio Flush Fit range, which has been developed to provide a sleek, flush finish that

The evolution of durable, high-quality uPVC also allows fabricators to provide the appearance of mechanical-style joints usually synonymous with timber solutions. Modern uPVC window systems such as the Rio emulate the finer details of a traditional timber flush fit window, giving customers a jointing solution that looks as realistic as possible. In a market where consumers are becoming savvier and demand authentic-looking windows, this is of vital importance. Through uPVC solutions, householders can therefore enjoy a natural-looking window at a more reasonable price than the timber alternative, while also benefitting from the durability, efficiency and noise prevention properties associated with uPVC products. The Rio Flush Fit offers a fit and forget solution, with customers safe in the knowledge that its Woodec foil is durable and scratch-resistant. In conclusion, the practical benefits of innovative uPVC products and aesthetic appeal of wood effect finishes are shaking up the window market. By offering the best of both materials, realistic alternatives to traditional timber windows such as the Rio Flush Fit can represent a uniquely attractive addition to any installer’s range. Mighton Presented With BSI Internet Security

Certificate For Avia Secure Smart Lock

L-R: David Mudd, BSI Global Digital & Connected Product Certification Director; Mike Derham, Mighton Products Chairman; Anne Scorey, BSI UK & Ireland Managing Director; Jim Herrington, Mighton Products Marketing Director; Stephen Thomas, IoT Business Development Manager.

Mighton has been officially presented with a certificate from the British Standards Institution (BSI) in recognition of achieving the Government’s Code of Practice for consumer Internet of Things (IoT) security for its Avia Apple HomeKit smart lock – the first ever product of any kind to receive the ETSI TS 103 645 accreditation says the company. The Code of Practice, which is recognised internationally, was introduced by the UK Government in October 2018, in response to growing concern about the cyber security of smart enabled devices in the home. Not only does the standard help to ensure the privacy and security of consumers when using their smart home products, it is also designed to prevent the threat of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks that are launched from poorly secured IoT devices. 38 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019

Mighton’s chairman, Mike Derham, and marketing director, Jim Herrington, received the award from the BSI’s global digital and connected product certification director, David Mudd; BSI UK & Ireland managing director, Anne Scorey; and IoT business development manager, Stephen Thomas. David Mudd commented: “Well done to Mighton Products for achieving compliance to the first globally-applicable standard for consumer IoT security. Best practice is more than just good encryption, strong passwords and addressing other system design issues, it’s also about responsible disclosure, software support and effective user guidance. It’s great to see companies taking this fully on board.” Avia – which carries PAS 24 accreditation and features 256-bit data encryption for enhanced security – is the first Apple

HomeKit lever operated smart multipoint lock. Available to UK trade customers exclusively through hardware distributor, Mila, it is a ‘full function’ lock that can be controlled using iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, keypad and fob, combined with the peace of mind of a traditional key and TS 007 3-star cylinder. Access via facial recognition is another exciting innovation that can be activated by an optional accessory. Once connected to the highly secure and stable Apple HomeKit platform, homeowners can check on the status of their entrance door via the Avia app, including a full audit trail that records all activity, and can also extend and control access to additional users – for example service providers – from anywhere in the world. Euroglaze Puts Together A Perfect Composite Door Spec Euroglaze, REHAU’s longest standing UK fabricator, has launched what it is calling a ‘perfect’ range of composite doors for its trade customers. The specification reads like a checklist of the industry’s favourite component suppliers and combines design, quality and, above all, value. All of the new doors in the Euroglaze range feature a REHAU outerframe and a Doorco slab, with a Mila hinge, Maco locking system and Fab & Fix hardware. There are a wide range of styles being offered, with standard colours available on 10-day lead times and nationwide delivery offered direct from the company’s Barnsley factory. The strategy, says Euroglaze’s Operations Director Glen Park, is to provide trade customers with

brands which they know and trust and which guarantee that the doors will be quick and easy to install. He explains: “This is a competitive market and we know that our customers, and those who buy from the trade outlets we supply, want a good quality, fit and forget door which won’t cause them any snagging or remedial problems. “The door slabs we have chosen are available in either a woodgrain finish to replicate timber or a smooth/etched finish to replicate aluminium. They incorporate an LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) subframe to provide strength and rigidity with minimal thermal expansion and contraction even under the UK’s increasingly extreme temperature variations and a PU foam core which reduces heat loss and guarantees a high level of

thermal performance. “The new doors meet the requirements of PAS24 and, if glazed, feature EN12150 compliant toughened glass with a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty, so that trade buyers and their retail customers can enjoy complete peace of mind.” Glen adds: “Because our factory is equipped with the latest technology and operates using lean manufacturing processes, we are supremely efficient as well so we can offer a high specification product without any compromise on value.” www.euroglaze.co.uk WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019 39

Distinction Extends Its Rustic Renown Range

Frame Fast Grow Its Aluminium Range With Designer Doors

Frame Fast UK has added the Smart Systems Designer Doors collection to its growing range, to create a complete suite of aluminium products to help installers offer more choice.

The collection is a selection of aluminium entrance doors. Special attention has been placed on the design of the doors to include stunning options for UK homes. Alongside the modern styling, there are also traditional doors styles including cottages, and two vintage options for 1930s properties. Size is one of the top features of the Smart Aluminium Designer Door collection. Victorian, Georgian and 1930s homes often had much grander entrances, and the larger sizes in the Smart Aluminium Designer Door range is designed to fit perfectly. As well as traditional homes, many architects have increased the size of the front doors to offer a more luxurious entrance. www.framefastuk.com 40 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019

Composite door supplier Distinction Doors has expanded its country cottage-themed offering by adding ten new style variations to their existing Rustic Renown Collection. The additions bring the total number of options to fifteen, each featuring the timeless characteristic of vertically grooved panelling. To sample the new products at their best it would be remiss of any home design enthusiast not to experiment with the company’s online door-designer too; whether for simple pleasure, or to showcase just how beautiful the Rustic Renown Diamond in Duck Egg, can look. The entire collection has been uploaded to the interactive software and is simple for both web wandering homeowners, and trade customers, to use. Sales Manager Andy Grogan talked more about Distinction’s ever expanding product range:

“Over recent months we’ve had consistent customer demand to increase the number of grooved boarder slab styles we offer. Despite their traditional appearance, the products suit the entranceways of so many different homes, in both urban and rural settings. The ten new variations are completely brand new and we feel, complement the current five perfectly. There is a mix of traditional and contemporary styled versions, as well as solid doors for maximum privacy. “We alerted our market of the expansion via an email that included a shot of the door-designer; the

response has been incredibly positive, with a high intake of customers already asking for the doors. The door-designer is the ideal way for our trade partners to create an image of how these doors will look, so it was vital that we made them available online immediately. We think that this has contributed to the high volume of requests to date.” What trader partners may not know is that Distinction’s marketing team can work with them to wrap bespoke branding around the door-designer software, making it more suitable for individual showrooms. Andy continued: “Our marketing team offers numerous benefits to the industry, and repackaging the door-designer as a general visualisation tool for others to use is just one way of helping to increase lead generation. If homeowners request a quote from the Distinction Doors software, we work with the appropriate trade partners to ensure that orders are geographically met.” www.distinctiondoors.co.uk

Premium Solutions

For Glass

Warm edge spacer bar supplier SWISSPACER is developing its range of solutions for glass in the UK with the addition of the exclusive La Pensilina premium glass canopy. This – alongside new fittings and systems for glass balustrades – will be available from SWISSPACER UK later this year. La Pensilina is a cantilever, load-bearing glass canopy system, which is designed for outdoor use and can be installed above entrance doors or sliding and folding patio doors. The design is stylish and minimalist, and the lack of visible screws gives the canopy a ‘floating’ effect. At the same time, the continuous aluminium profile provides the strength to hold a distributed load of up to 350 kg/m2 without breaking. No rods or glass cut-outs are required, and La Pensilina is also the first canopy system without glass holes to hold an ETA (European Technical Assessment) document. The innovative new products are made by Logli Massimo, part of the Saint-Gobain group, following its acquisition of the Italian manufacturer in March 2018. Logli Massimo specialises in high performing systems and accessories for the fixing and assembly of glass panels. The quality

of its products is demonstrated by the substantial testing it undertakes at a laboratory built in partnership with the School of Engineering at the University of Florence. Andreas Geith, Managing Director of SWISSPACER, comments: “Our brand of premium warm edge spacers is a UK market leader with a reputation for great looks, innovation and high performance. Faster Aluminium Fabrication With Stellar Says

Epwin Window Systems

Stellar, the new aluminium window and door system from Epwin Window Systems, is packed with innovative developments that set new standards for the aluminium industry. For fabricators, one of the most important developments is that it’s 20% faster to fabricate, claims the company.

Paul Booth, Design Director, Aluminium Products, Epwin Group Plc, who led the team that developed Stellar, said: “There are all kinds of operation efficiencies fabricators can look at to speed up fabrication times and help reduce material costs. But Stellar has been designed to be faster to fabricate in the first place. It gives fabricators an extraordinary competitive ad46 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019

vantage.”

Stellar delivers such impressive efficiency gains thanks to several innovative features. The biggest gain is from the fact it’s a pre-gasketed system. Stellar also uses a patent-pending knock-in bead system that results in faster, easier glazing too. Other innovations include fast-fit espags, chevrons and corner ties are only required on the flush sash and all products have direct fix hardware. Furthermore, stock levels are easier to manage as many parts are consistent across the entire suite. As well as delivering faster fabrication, Stellar brings further benefits to fabricators as it’s a

truly adaptable system. For example, the system allows for mechanical joint fabrication and is a perfect fit with PVC-U cills too. Paul said: “The joy of Stellar was that our brief was to go back to the drawing board and develop a system that delivered state-of-the-art design without compromise. We involved fabricators in the development process to ensure we designed a system that gave them what they needed. The feedback we’ve had since the launch shows that we have more than succeeded in our aim.” Stellar has attracted a great deal of interest thanks to its Fully Flush Casement Window, which has flush lines inside and out, and the Flush Casement Window that offers up to 12% more glass area. But as the faster fabrication reveals, this is just the start of the Stellar story. www.stellaraluminium.co.uk

Laboratories regularly inspect and test on-going powder coating production and it is this crucial part of the operation of a powder coat applicator, which maintains their licence as a QUALICOAT approved applicator. The next laboratory training programme is to be held at the AluK powder coating plant in Chepstow at the beginning of October. Training is mandatory for all applicators at least every two years. More information is available on the QUALICOAT UK & Ireland website. The new regulations covering the surface spread of flame for dwellings which are above 18m in height was discussed. It was agreed that all powder coatings will meet the minimum classification of, A2, s1,d0 for surface spread of flame and this is something that will likely form part of the QUALICOAT specification in the foreseeable future. Always changing and developing, QUALICOAT has announced that an international working group has been set up to look at developing an even tighter specification for QUALICOAT which will further enhance the life expectancy of architectural coatings. aluplast Launches ‘True-Black’ Foil aluplast has continued the expansion of its premium foils offer with the launch of Jet-Black – its new ‘true black’ finish.

Slide Patio. Cocken continued: “We’re not alone in recognising the critical importance that finish and foils have in driving the replacement-of-replacements. It’s a key point of differentiation.

Available with immediate effect, the new foil offering has been designed to provide an alternative to palisander black. Ian Cocken, Director of Sales and Marketing, aluplast, said: “Anyone working in retail will know that in certain lights, Palisander black has a tendency to look more like a dark brown, which can leave homeowners disappointed. “With a matt finish it also offers an excellent match to aluminium systems and is part of the continuing development of our colour and foil offer.” It’s part of a comprehensive offering from the German sys-

Frame Fixings Enable Better

of reinforcement. The StarFix range’s thread design along the length of the fastener is optimised to cater for the contradictory requirements for the different material types – plastic, brick, metal, etc.

With a design specifically for British wall construction, StarFix® masonry screws from window and door fastener specialist Rapierstar could help installers achieve a better all-round result in less time and without generating unnecessary plastic waste.

David Furness added: “Consumers are increasingly looking to their product and service suppliers to be as sustainable as possible. With StarFix frame fixings, which do not require plastic plugs at all, installers can take a simple waste reduction step, with the added benefit that the completed installation will be reliably secure for the long term.”

Quality Installation With Less Waste

StarFix fasteners are designed for quick and easy installation, requiring only a 6mm or 6.5mm pilot hole through the frame, reinforcement and brickwork before the screw can be driven into place. This saves times as there is no need to drill to accommodate a plug or anchor and plastic waste is reduced too – a hot topic for consumers at the moment. David Furness, MD at Rapierstar said: “Despite being a proven option for frame fixing, plug-free masonry screws are not always favoured by installers, usually in our experience as a result of a negative experience using poorly designed fasteners. This is because many of the plug-free frame fixings currently on the market are not ideally suited 50 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019

the traditional brick and block wall construction of UK buildings – instead many were designed mainly for use in honeycomb clay blocks widely used in continental Europe.” The StarFix range of plug-free masonry screws is specifically designed for British style blocks with a ‘hi-lo’ thread form. This is a varied thread height to fulfil different roles as the screw is driven through the frame and into the masonry. A higher level thread cuts into the masonry and the alternate low thread allows for dust to be compacted. This ensures a secure fix by preventing the masonry, dust and debris build up affecting the grip and pull-out strength, and allowing for multiple re-fixing without stripping the tapped hole. The hi-lo thread form also helps prevent unreinforced PVC-U frames ‘jacking’ or twisting as the frame fixing is driven through. Some fastener threads may grip too much, and this can easily cause distortion of the profile if it lacks lateral rigidity in the absence

Like all window and door fasteners in the Rapierstar range, StarFix masonry screws are designed and manufactured to a consistently high standard to ensure optimum drive efficiency, safety and improved grip. The precision Stardrive T30 recess features across the StarFix range, which also helps to extend bit life for another cost-saving benefit. The StarFix masonry screw range is available from window and door distributors across the UK and Ireland and is backed by specialist advice and support direct from Rapierstar. Bosch Professional

FlexiClick 12V –

Now With Brushless Motor

The most compact and versatile drill driver system

longer-lasting, as well as maintenance-free.

• New brushless motor for longer life with greater power, speed and efficiency

With its upgraded specification, short length, low weight and range of adapters, this tool promises even greater effectiveness in a diversity of high-precision tasks – especially in tight spaces and hard-toreach situations.

• Larger maximum drilling and driving diameter for wider application range • Four adapters and eight configurations for compact, flexible, multi-task solutions • Fixed-chuck version (without adapters) for easy drilling and driving in small spaces Bosch Professional has boosted the power of its popular FlexiClick 12V cordless drill driver system by adding a brushless motor. The resulting Bosch GSR 12V-35 FC Professional Drill Driver is faster, stronger, more efficient and

Top speed has been increased by 35% to 1,750 rpm, while maximum torque has been raised to a powerful 35 Nm for hard screwdriving applications and 20 Nm for soft. Increasing maximum drilling diameter in wood to 32 mm (up 70%) and maximum screw diameter to 8 mm has also expanded the tool’s job range. At the same time, Bosch Professional has reduced its length by 17 mm compared to the previous model.

The four adapters – bit holder (with bit locking), drill chuck, angle attachment and off-set angle attachment – make this the most versatile and compact system in the market. Together they enable a total of eight possible configurations. Bosch Professional is the only manufacturer whose angle adapter can be combined and used with any of the other three. Also unique is the ability to adjust the angle and off-set adapters directly on the tool. Sixteen working positions can be set without having to detach the adapter from the drill driver. For professionals like carpenters, kitchen fitters, furniture makers, trade fair booth fitters and installers, this saves time and gives extra flexibility when working in confined areas. The FlexiClick 12V system starts with the Bosch GSR 12V-35 FC Professional Drill Driver itself. At just 115 mm in length, this is the shortest cordless drill driver in its class – making it the ideal problem solver where space is limited. It can be used on its own, without adapters, using its integral magnetic bit holder. The tool features a convenient belt clip and an enlarged soft grip area for additional comfort. Connection to an adapter takes moments. Simply place the adapter onto the FlexiClick interface and turn the locking ring clockwise. A click and a control indicator on the adapter confirms secure attachment. The adapters, which have been rigorously tried, tested and proven on the previous model, are as follows: 1) GFA 12-X Professional Bit Holder. This attachment has a hexagonal mounting with a lock to prevent bits from coming loose accidentally. Even with Continued on page 52 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019 51

the bit holder in place, the drill driver is now only 144 millimetres in length and is therefore still the shortest model on the market. 2) GFA 12-B Professional Drill Chuck. Featuring an auto-lock function, this chuck can be used for drill bits from 1 to 10 mm. It takes the drill driver’s length to 162 mm – significantly shorter than in its predecessor – and allows drilling in tight workspaces. 3) GFA 12-W Professional Angle Adapter. At just 61 mm, this

is the shortest angle adapter in its class. In effect, it allows you to drive screws around corners. Precise screwdriving becomes possible in very restricted spaces. A choice of 16 working positions can be set without removing it from the tool. 4) GFA 12-E Professional Offset Angle Adapter. This allows precise screwdriving right up to 12 mm from the edge. Again, it offers 16 working positions without removal from the drill driver. The Bosch GSR 12V-35 FC Professional Drill Driver can

be purchased from specialist retail outlets. Also available is a fixed-chuck drill driver, without adapters: the GSR 12V-35 Professional. Measuring 154 mm in length, and equipped with the same new brushless motor, this is the shortest and most powerful fixed-chuck drill driver in the 12V range. Offering the same levels of speed and torque as the FlexiClick model, its performance stands out from others – particularly in terms of screwdriving accuracy and drilling in metal or wood. www.bosch-professional.co.uk

North East Bifolds

Switch To Kombimatec CNC After Seeing The Performance For Themselves

In business as an aluminium window and sliding door fabricator and installer for just three years, volumes had grown quickly for North East Bifolds Ltd, based at Seaham, near Sunderland and the owners decided to invest in a CNC machining centre. However, having made the decision to purchase such a machine from one supplier, directors Tony Meah and Chris Craggs switched to a Kombimatec AMC308 after seeing one in action at a business associate’s factory and examining the high quality offered in that firm’s products. “We work with TSA Aluminium on various projects from time to time,” explained Tony Meah, “and just before we placed an order for a CNC machining

centre with another company, we happened to see the Kombimatec machine at TSA in operation. The efficiency, ease of operation and the quality of the work it produces made us completely rethink our choice, and we called Kombimatec.” When Kombimatec MD David Parsons took the enquiry he insisted upon fully evaluating North East Bifolds’ needs before taking an order: “David is very clued up and helpful,” said Tony “and wanted to assess our needs to make sure that the machine was right for us. As it happens, it has been the perfect choice with the results proving themselves in the increase in output and quality. In fact,” added Tony, ”we have been so pleased with the CNC machine and the way that Kombimatec has looked after

us, we have now bought one of the company’s double mitre saws.” The Kombimatec kit installed at North East Bifolds is the company’s AMC308 Automatic CNC Machining Centre, which has been developed for both aluminium and PVC-U profiles. It automatically performs all drilling, routing, slotting, tapping and milling functions via a sophisticated control system and intuitive touch screen interface and includes electronic variable speed control and 4 adjustable pneumatic clamps. The installation is fully enclosed for safety and noise reduction. North East Bifolds also upgraded their machine to include an automatic tool change cabinet to further increase efficiency. The Compound Double Mitre Saw subsequently purchased, is the Kombimatec DGS570, which also uses advanced control software and fully complements the machining centre. North East Bifolds Ltd began life after Tony’s housebuilding firm consistently experienced poor deliveries and product quality from its window and door suppliers: “Builders need windows and doors on time and in full, and we were let down so often that Chris and I decided to set up and make our own,” said Tony. “Our commitment to supplying builders when we say we will do it, has really worked for us to the point where we needed to invest in the Kombimatec to step up output and maintain and even improve quality. Business has grown rapidly making and installing Schuco doors, especially in high-end homes, together with Smart windows and doors. We have an excellent reputation now and the business is now outstripping our day jobs,” he joked. www.kombimatec.com WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019 53

Profile 22 Optima Windows Specified In Telford New Build Development

SYSTEMGLAS® Ligna Provides

Assured Fire

Safety For Prestigious Profile 22’ Optima sculptured windows were specified and commissioned for 39 new build homes in Snedshill, Telford for private rent. The window specification was for a RAL 7016 Grey on White sculptured profile that could achieve an overall U value of 1.4 W/m2K. Secured by Design accreditation was a requirement as was PAS24 / Part Q compliance. The site’s location near a busy road meant acoustic glazing was required on some elevations. Trickle vents were required on some windows, including those with acoustic glazing requirements, which meant non-standard acoustic trickle vents were required. Other windows required astragal bars, which needed to be glazed and heat wrapped before leaving the factory. The project’s main contractor, Lovell Partnerships, awarded the window contract to Profile 22 Approved Window Contractor Select Windows. Select operates nationwide in the refurbishment and new build construction markets. It has worked with Lovell Partnerships regularly and has built up a reputation as a contractor to be trusted, a factor that played an important part in winning the tender.

Select tendered for the contract with Profile 22’s Optima Sculptured Window because it more than met the requirements of the project. The Optima system delivers a 1.2 W/m2K U-value as standard, with U-values as low as 0.8 W/m2K possible. Optima windows achieve PAS24 2016 Enhanced Security and have Secured by Design options when these are required, as they were in this case. The high specification of the glazing configuration and the requirement for windows with astragal bars to be glazed at the factory added an extra level of challenge to the project. Fabrication and installation of the windows was completed smoothly and on schedule thanks to Select’s experience in working cooperatively and proactively to demanding timescales. The completed homes are an excellent addition to Telford’s housing stock. Steve Chatham, Select Windows’ Business Development Manager, said: “We are very pleased with this development, which looks very impressive from the roadside.” www.profile22.co.uk

Bilingual School

A project to create a high quality meeting room and classroom within the new Upper School of the prestigious École Jeannine Manuel School in London has been completed using the complete fire resistant, timber frame glazing system Promat SYSTEMGLAS® Ligna. The school, which is a co-educational, French bilingual, international school for 3-18 year olds, was established in 2015. Its new Upper School occupies a Georgian building facing onto Russell Square so any development work within the school has to carefully balance the preservation of period architecture with the provision of high quality facilities. The latest project has created a meeting room and split an existing room in order to create a corridor and new classroom. By utilising the SYSTEMGLAS® Ligna butt-jointed glazed partitioning system, in combination with timber doorsets, the right aesthetic and performance balance could be achieved, in combination with assured EI30 fire protection and 39db acoustic insulation to help reduce unwanted noise disturbance. www.promat-glass.co.uk WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019 55

Nostalgia Added

To Surrey New-Build An eye-catching residential home, ‘The Cedar Views,’ has been built on the south-western fringes of Woking, adjacent to The Strawberry Tree – a popular period property in the area.

Because of its proximity to Strawberry Tree, it was a requirement that products installed at The Cedar Views be in-keeping with the nearby property’s traditional features. This included the windows, which needed to provide period aesthetic appeal while also providing the convenience and quality of new, modern products. REHAU could offer such a solution. Mark Wright, owner at MA Wright, the main contractors on the project, said: “I’ve known REHAU for a long time now and have been using their windows for decades. The products are of a very good quality and are always a pleasure to install. Also, in terms of budgetary requirements, these 56 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019

windows are a really great choice and provides another reason to choose this style.”

The REHAU Heritage Vertical sash window profile used on this project has been developed following extensive consultation with conservation bodies and housing associations. What makes this product truly stand out is its ability to allow period window features to be preserved, while having the long-lasting reliability of PVC-U windows. Traditional design details and sightlines of a timber box sash window, with all the benefits of PVC-U make this system the ideal replacement sash window. Chris Whiteman, Architect at BBF Fielding who were commissioned for the project, said: “I have the same REHAU windows installed at my own Victorian property. The heritage range is an excellent replacement for the original timber sliding sashes. The frames are

elegant and narrow, just like the originals, but they are thermally efficient and low maintenance. When our client was looking for suitable windows, which would complement the period style of the property, I did not hesitate to recommend the REHAU Heritage sliding sash windows. We looked at various manufacturers but none of them came even close to the REHAU product in terms of aesthetics.” The neighbouring period property’s owners were very impressed at the quality and finish of the windows, which complemented the traditional look of the property while offering an excellent standard of performance. “We were amazed by how REHAU’s windows were so in keeping with what we were after. They have met and exceeded all of our requirements and are performing exceptionally well, especially in terms of its thermal efficiency,” said Saqib Butt, owner of The Strawberry Tree. CMS Completes Glazing Package For Glasgow’s Innovative New ‘Sengetun’ Hospice

CMS Window Systems has delivered an extensive package of aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling for a new £21m hospice in Glasgow, which its development team has designed to provide palliative care services fit for the 21st century in a homely and respectful environment. Designed by Ryder Architecture and built by main contractor Balfour Beatty, the new Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, created in the city’s leafy Bellahouston Park, is the first hospice in the UK to follow the Sengetun model of care, which has “placemaking” at the centre of its approach. Its innovative, stateof-the-art Scandinavian design puts patients and families first, with the provision of space for privacy, dignity and compassionate care for all ages. It is based on research that shows the aesthetic design of a healthcare facility has a measurable impact on patients’ wellbeing.

The new building’s location in Bellahouston Park helps to ensures all senses contribute to enhancing patient care, including sunlight, warmth and the landscape, which support the functions of the building, and create a feeling of home. For this reason, the design of the windows and doors allows for maximum natural daylighting and uncluttered views, with the brief being for high performance aluminium fenestration throughout. CMS Window Systems, based near Glasgow at Castlecary and a long term supporter of the hospice’s ‘Brick by Brick’ fundraising campaign, was awarded the circa £0.5m glazing contract in a competitive tender, with the specification built around a combination of Metal Technology systems. It was a project that encompassed around 500m2 of Metal Technology System 17 curtain walling and Metal Technology 5-20 / 7-20 doors. All aluminium profiles, flashings and

fixing brackets were finished in RAL 1035 (pearl beige). Rhona Baillie, chief executive, The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice said: “The environment can actually improve a patient’s symptoms because if you have anxiety quite often that can heighten a patient’s physical pain. If we can help to control that anxiety and make the patient feel more relaxed, in an environment that they are very comfortable in, then that can help their overall physical state.” Stephen Anderson, Aluminium Director at CMS Window Systems added: “The new Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice is a superb new facility that is set to give local people the very best quality of palliative care. After eight years in the planning and construction, it is fantastic to see it come to fruition and to have been part of the project team.” www.cmswindows.com. WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019 57

TuffX Balustrade Brings Wow Factor To

Stunning Cheltenham Home Safety glass specialist, TuffX, has supplied 50m2 of laminated toughened glass to a prestigious residential property, situated in the heart of Cheltenham’s picturesque countryside. The owners of the property had specified a bespoke glass balustrade in order to maximise the potential of an elevated terrace at the rear of the building – one that commands outstanding views over the surrounding area. The brief for the balustrade, which extends the entire length of the terrace as well as to a flight of steps leading up from a garden area, was two-fold – as an important part of the building’s overall aesthetics, it of course had to be visually appealing, while at the same time it also had to perform to strict 58 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019

As a result, TuffX was approached to supply a total of 28 toughened and laminated panels, using 21.5mm glass, including polished edges and radius corners complete with 25mm diameter holes. Graham Price, TuffX managing director, commented: “This project is a perfect demonstration of how the addition of our laminated and toughened glass balustrades can improve an already very desirable property. We are seeing a growth in demand for our safety glass offering, particularly in impressive residential buildings such as this, as its strength and

performance means that it is becoming increasingly popular with both homeowners and architects who want a visually appealing yet structurally sound solution to enhancing outside spaces.” TuffX, which has recently announced an additional £500m investment in its facilities following further expansion earlier this year, has developed an unrivalled reputation for its high-performance glass, which is suitable for both domestic and commercial applications. The company supplies its toughened and laminated safety glass in a range of thicknesses, from 11.5mm to 39mm, and can deliver nationwide from its 75,000ft2 facility in Merseyside. www.tuffxglass.co.uk

Another Major Stadium Contract At

Rangers FC’s Hummel Training Centre

Glass and aluminium specialist Cube Glass has increased its presence in the important UK stadium market with a major contract at Rangers Football Club’s state-of-the-art Hummel Training Centre. The stadium arena and sports venue business has mushroomed in importance in recent years as owners and operators continue to drive awareness and maximise non-match day revenues. The 38-acre Hummel Training Centre at Auchenhowie in the north of Glasgow, formerly Murray Park, was opened in 2001 at a cost of £14 million. Hummel,

the Danish sportswear company, is Rangers’ kit supplier. Working in association with Morris & Spottiswood, Cumbernauld-based Cube Glass installed three fire-rated Schueco screens and new double doors at the training centre, which hosts manager Steve Gerrard, his staff and the first team squad. The Window Company (Contracts)’ extensive experience in the schools sector helped the award winning* installer secure the replacement window contract at Loyola Preparatory School in Buckhurst Hill, Essex. Recommendations came not just from other nearby schools, but even from other subcontractors who had seen the company’s fitting teams in action and had been impressed with the standard of work. As a result, Loyola’s bursar Maria Rosario had high expectations of what the company could deliver on the contract and was delighted when they lived up to those. He added: “My son Martin actually attended the school way back in the 1970s. Are Your Joints

Failing You?

Alan Burgess, one of the innovators behind Timberweld®, shows the industry exactly what happens if butt joints (typically used on premium flush sashes) are open-ended with a video on the company’s website and twitter. “Many mechanical butt joints are open-ended,” explains Alan, “allowing rainwater, draughts and even flies in! In our video, a handkerchief is passed through the open joint, showing just how big the gap can be. This isn’t what homeowners expect – especially as they pay more for details like butt joints that replicate the features found on timber originals.”

In recent years, the market for premium (or even upper middle) windows that mimic traditional timber details has exploded. Property-rich homeowners looking to make value-enhancing improvements want quality products that look polished and refined – and they will pay more for the look they love. “But windows must perform as well as they look,” adds Alan. “Timberweld, for example, is a patented method of jointing that makes perfect corners and creates a butt-joint effect on the outside and inside of a window. Fabricating windows or doors in this way means the corners are

extremely strong and completely sealed. “Our video highlights how important a perfect butt joint is. It may sound superficial, but when it comes to replacing windows and doors, today’s homeowners are obsessed with looks. Lots of companies can create a butt joint effect, but the Timberweld method of construction gives a perfect corner which is strong, draught/water-tight, and durable. Award-winning composite door manufacturer Vista has strengthened its hold on the panel market with the launch of a new brochure.

in this market, we aim to continue the manufacture of panels until the demand stops but there is no sign of that just yet.”

As they gear up for their 25th year in manufacturing, one of the longest standing infill panel manufacturers thought it was time to update their collection.

As Vista are almost 25 years old they have already overseen their 10-year warranty twice over so choosing them as a supplier has been a wise choice for some.

The Vista PVCu panel collection has always set the bar on quality, claims the company and some of the industry’s largest fabricators have been selling them for as long as Vista have made them. The new edition showcases Vista’s updated range perfectly. The new brochure reflects the current trend to have coloured PVcu panels and Vista have 13 foiled finishes in the catalogue. It is no longer just composite doors that can add a splash of colour to a home. 64 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019

Ian Smith, Vista’s Business Development and Marketing Manager, commented: “While the continued success of XtremeDoor has put us at the forefront of the composite door market, we’ve never taken our eyes off the manufacture of PVCu panels. They have been good to us over the years and our customers have been loyal in staying with us. “With a number of companies recently going into administration or stopping the production of panels there are few choices left

Earlier this year Vista launched the Contemporary Collection, two new ranges of composite doors that look and feel just like aluminium. Part of Vista’s existing XtremeDoor range, they have their own standalone brochure. “Our suite of brochures have all been designed with our customers in mind and our PVCu Panel Collection, Composite Door Collection and Contemporary Collection mean that we can offer the complete door package to any fabricator,” added Ian. www.vistapanels.co.uk

Government’s New Design Guide Welcome

News For Window Industry Following the Conservative Party Conference, the Secretary of State for Housing Communities and Local Government has unveiled a new design guide in a bid to encourage better housing and building development. The new design guide will replace the outdated system to ensure that new builds will adhere to Industry Standards and meet the needs of local people. With renewed pressure mounting on developers to select products that maximise housing performance and appearance, REHAU is advocating that windows have to be one of the first ports of call. Capable of enhancing a number of building characteristics, there are a plethora of considerations to take into account when designing the right windows. For example, REHAU’s Rio Flush Fit Window profile balances cost, efficiency and aes68 WINDOW NEWS OCTOBER 2019

Key to the new guide is the concept that buildings should be well-designed, high quality and attractive, meeting local needs and incorporating the requirements of the Ten Characteristics of well-designed places. Martin Hitchin, Chief Executive at REHAU Windows said: “Traditional timber windows have always generally been perceived as the more attractive option, but fall short in practicality with a short service life and risk of decay. Technological innovation has meant PVCu windows have come a long way in terms of aesthetic appeal so that they can look just as good as they perform.” REHAU’s Rio Flush Fit Window incorporates the new authentic wood effect foil, Turner Oak, which is a like-for-like replica of timber windows, but with the added bo-

A window’s aesthetics goes handin-hand with functionality and having sustainable materials can positively impact performance. Windows are of prime importance in ensuring homes are suitably insulated, and having lower levels of heat loss is also a critical part of the Approved Part L consultation of building regulations for new buildings. If the windows are designed correctly, not only will heating costs be reduced, but noise levels will be reduced too. Martin added: “In correspondence with the new design guide, windows are a crucial part in creating a home and a community that families can be proud of. This guide outlines that people need to be at the heart of the housing process and new standards need to be set. At REHAU we recognise this within our PVCu window portfolio and the industry now has an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in creating beautiful homes of the future.” For more information download REHAU’s guide, Seize your window of opportunity: How windows can unlock the potential of your commercial building,www. rehau.com/gb-en/pvcu-windowsdoors–composite-curtain-walling/ windows-specification-download-from-rehau

Installation At Slimming World HQ

Announced As Finalist In Major Awards Programme Pilkington United Kingdom Limited, part of the NSG Group, has been listed as a finalist for Commercial Project of the Year in the G19 Awards for its installation at Slimming Word’s HQ. The installation, recognised by the glazing industry awards programme, was part of an £8.5 million renovation scheme at the weight loss organisation’s Derbyshire workspace. Pilkington UK supplied low-emissivity and solar control glass to help the building stay warm in the winter and cooler in the summer, reducing the need for mechanical heating and cooling – while still allowing for maximum natural light transmittance. The shortlisting follows the glass giant winning the category last year for its project at 6 St Andrew Square in Edinburgh.

Michael Metcalfe, commercial sales manager at Pilkington UK, said: “Sustainability is increasingly important in the built-environment. With advanced products, buildings can become more energy efficient without compromising on glazing’s aesthetical appeal, or natural light exposure, which research links to healthy living and productivity. “We achieved this winning balance with the help of our partners for a well-loved British business, and it’s excellent to have this recognised by G19 by making the shortlist for Commercial Project of the Year. “Slimming World HQ is also one of the first projects featuring Pilkington Suncool™ 60/31 T glass, which is now fully manufactured in the UK. We hope to combine a made-in-Britain success story with a new chapter for a wellloved British business.”

The project was supported by fabricators Advanced Glass Facades, main contractor Morgan Sindall Construction and architects CPMG.
