Roto Exceeds Sales

Expectations, Prioritises

Digitalisation Strategy delivery capability worldwide, despite the material supply crisis that had followed the pandemic, and how efficiency has been maintained and improved by the company’s focus on consistent process digitalisation.

Roto Group has used its annual trade press day to report a significant increase in turnover during 2021 and outline its strategy to expand the use of digital technology across its manufacturing, logistics and sales operations. At the event in Düsseldorf, Dr Eckhard Keill, chairman of parent company Roto Frank Holding AG, reported that total group turnover figures for 2021 represented a 20% increase on the previous 12 months, with a predicted year end figure of around €800 million – an unprecedented record in the history of the company. All three trading divisions including Window and Door Technology grew at almost identical double-digit rates. Marcus Sander, chairman of Roto Window & Door Technology, said, “We have successfully overcome another extremely challenging year and are completely satisfied with the results we achieved in 2021. This applies to turnover, profits and market shares alike”. He went on to talk about how Roto has worked to maintain its

Looking at Europe, Sander reported upward sales trends in the DACH and Benelux countries plus France and Italy. He said the construction crisis in the United Kingdom remains serious and Scandinavia is still stagnant, while Spain, Portugal and Greece are proving to be resilient despite new outbreaks of the coronavirus in 2021. Homeowners making renovations and improvements to their homes have been the driving force behind market growth in Europe and Roto has been able to grow, “even in markets with below-average performance”, he reported. Although no new hardware products were launched at the event, Roto used the occasion to drive home the message about digitalisation. A range of new technology processes are being implemented across the company. This includes artificial intelligence (AI) software that allows production machines and tools to optimise their performance autonomously. Other digitalisation projects running now or planned for 2022 include collaborative robots (cobots), driverless transport systems on factory sites, digital spare parts management, dronebased warehouse automation and additive manufacturing (3D printing).

Victorian

Sliders

Celebrates £10m Turnover Increase Sash window manufacturer Victorian Sliders is celebrating its most successful year on record. It has seen turnover soar by an incredible £10m over the last twelve months. After experiencing unprecedented demand for its ECOSlide sash windows, the manufacturer has implemented extra shifts, expanded office locations, hired dozens of new employees, and significantly expanded its transportation fleet to keep pace with demand. Having reached this momentous milestone, Victorian Sliders is now in an excellent position to continue to thrive and grow into 2022 and beyond. Chief finance officer Ian Cunningham comments: “The incredible success we’ve experienced in 2021 is a direct result of Victorian Sliders’ long legacy of investment. “Under the leadership of CEO Scot Starkey, we’ve continually invested in expanding our productive capacity, improving our products, and bringing everything from profile extrusion to recycling under one roof.” www.victoriansliders.co.uk WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022 5

Endurance Doors are now driving down lead times for their bespoke, solid core composite doors to five weeks, with plans to take this to a twelve working days standard following a sustained period where material supply, consumer demand and other social and economic factors have pushed times out considerably. New business systems have been implemented including the new Amicus platform, which greatly improves customer communications through an automated ticketing and tracking system, something used effectively by trusted businesses in consumer facing sectors in the UK and beyond.

Stephen Nadin, managing director of Endurance Doors explains this further and said: ‘Now that the supply chain has started to stablise we’re getting lead times down to five weeks and the plan is to get this to a twelve working day standard in the coming months. Total Hardware’s

Strength In Supply As fabricators look to capitalise and manage the opportunities that today’s buoyant market is offering, it’s never been more important to choose supply partners carefully. Chris Pell, general manager at Total Hardware, said: “With the market buoyant across domestic, commercial and new build, it’s important to choose strong, reliable supply partners that can help you meet demand in all areas. This should include a large product range, strong stock-holding and rapid order turnaround.”

Credit Providers To Benefit From Risa’s Expertise RISA now carries out assessments of replacement windows and doors under Section 75 of the UK consumer protection law. Section 75 is part of the Consumer Credit Act that protects purchases made on a credit card or via a loan, so consumers can get their money back if there is a problem. In a nutshell it means that, for purchases between £100 and £30,000 bought with credit, the lender is as responsible as the supplier – so the consumer isn’t left with a debt for a purchase they don’t receive or that wasn’t up to scratch. Section 75 claims can also be made even if the consumer hasn’t paid the full amount using a credit facility or credit card. If just a deposit has been paid using a credit card they still have full protection under Section 75 for the full amount

and not limited to the amount they paid. In the case of domestic window and door replacements, if a consumer is unhappy with their installation and cannot settle the dispute with their installer your credit provider can be held responsible. RISA’s independence ensures that any Section 75 assessments undertaken are carried out impartially and without a conflict of interest, as RISA does not profit in any way from any subsequent remedial work required on the installation being inspected. This independence also benefits installation companies with complaints from rogue customers trying to receive a pay-out for issues not of their making or that don’t exist at all. A RISA section 75 assessment looks at the specifics of the

8 WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022

complaint, building regulation compliance and the quality of the installation. The report concludes with RISA’s recommendations for any action to be taken. “For consumers who’ve bought replacement windows and doors on a credit card or with a loan from a finance company, Section 75 offers another level of legal protection and peace of mind,” said Dave Mecham, RISA’s director of inspection & assessment. “RISA is committed to continual quality improvement in the fenestration industry, so opening up our accredited inspection services to finance and credit providers in this way makes perfect sense. Essentially, we’ll be asking did the customer get what they ordered, and if not, how can it be rectified? And as RISA is independent from the process and any remedial work that may be identified, we offer lenders an impartial assessment of a dispute that they might not get from the other parties involved.” https://www.risaltd.co.uk/

Don’t Rely

On Old Systems To Comply With The Revised Building Regs, Says Deceuninck Aluminium

Wayne Richards, Deceuninck Aluminium’s technical manager

Fabricators have less than six months to make sure that the aluminium systems they manufacture meet new requirements for

building regulations, which come into force this summer. From June 2022, replacement

10 WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022

doors with a >60% glazed area will need to achieve an overall U-value of 1.4W/m2K, while newbuild equivalents will need to achieve an overall U-value of 1.2W/m2K. When the Future Homes and Buildings Standard comes into force in 2025, these figures are expected to drop even further. Since the revisions were announced in December 2021, many fabricators have been turning to their suppliers to see if their systems can accommodate the revisions. In many cases introducing a triple glazed unit is one design hack. “Older systems were designed for a double-glazed unit, so there’s a maximum width of unit you can get into the frames,” Wayne Richards, Deceuninck Aluminium’s technical manager, said. “So, the question is not about the number of panes of glass, but how deep you can go, and with older systems you are typically limited to a 28mm-32mm unit.” If a triple glazed unit was used to improve the thermal performance,

TRADE NEWS

consideration would also need to be made for the extra weight placed on the hardware. “Most bifolding doors on the market have a maximum weight of 100kg-150kg,” Wayne said. “So, if you are going to put in triple glazing then you are probably going to go over that maximum weight, which is going to limit the size of the door. “We may be looking at acoustic/ laminate glass in the future, especially with security,” Wayne continued. “You are already looking at laminate glass being installed in all doors. So, if you want to keep the size, and incorporate a 62mm unit, then you need a heavy-duty roller and hinges to cope with it.” The Decalu88 Bi-Folding Door from Deceuninck Aluminium can comply with the 2022 Part L newbuild revisions with a double-glazed unit. It is also designed to comfortably incorporate thicker and heavier units to meet future thermal, acoustic and security standards. “If I was a fabricator, I’d be asking my supplier if their doors can do the same,” Wayne said. Another retrofit design is the thermal break, with some suggesting that this can be swapped out for a better thermally performing alternative. “Systems are tested with a particular thermal break,” Wayne said. “So, if you introduce a new thermal barrier, then you have to go through the whole design and testing procedure again. “It’s a lot easier to actually redesign a new product, especially since people are looking for slimmer sightlines and better security.” www.deceuninck.co.uk

122 Times Round The Earth Andrew Scott

John Crittenden, managing director of Carl F Groupco, and Andy Matthews, head of sales at Hoppe (UK)

Hoppe (UK) is celebrating a major milestone for one of its longest standing products having recently delivered its 200 millionth Atlanta door handle. The 200 millionth Atlanta handle was purchased by hardware distributor Carl F Groupco, which has been selling window and door hardware components to the UK fenestration industry since the 1950s from its distribution centres in Peterborough and Cumbernauld. The Atlanta model is one of HOPPE’s best-selling door handles because of its durability, sleek design, smooth action and range of finishes. HOPPE handles are named after cities with international airports. If all of the Atlanta handles sold in the UK to date were laid end to end, the line of handles would extend the same distance as the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport’s longest runway almost 13,000 times, and would even circumnavigate the globe

122 times. John Crittenden, managing director for Carl F Groupco since 1989, has worked with Hoppe products throughout his career. He said: “We’ve worked with Hoppe (UK) for as long as I’ve been in the industry, and it has always been one of our leading handle brands within our hardware range. “The design of the Atlanta handle, as well as the consistent quality, is what makes it so appealing. The finer details like the finger grips and shaped lever are elements that you just don’t get with other brands. Once our customers have used the Atlanta handle for a project, they will come back to ask for it again on their next project. “We have a very good working relationship with Hoppe (UK). I know exactly who to call if there’re any queries and they are always knowledgeable and friendly.” WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022 11

Mark Mitchell

Expansion Plans For

Cornwall Group

Cornwall Group is positioning itself for major expansion in 2022 as it conducts acquisition talks and begins work on a new glass processing facility in Somerset.

Cornwall Group’s chairman Mark Mitchell said the company’s strategy of putting resources in place first, before needing to fully engage them, has allowed it to be agile when new opportunities arise. “We’ve already made it clear that we are very open to the idea of buying existing businesses that allow us to expand our product range or our geographical each,” he said. “But we can only do that if we are in a position to do so. We are constantly on a war footing, if you like.” This state of readiness, he argued, is one reason why the

company has fared better than most since March 2020.

“It’s gone better than we could have hoped for,” Mark said. “To say that nearly two years have been pandemic related, and we have plans to expand and acquire, then that is really something.” Mark revealed that several approaches have been made to him during December and January. “These aren’t necessarily distress sales,” he said, “but I think a lot of organisations have reflected on what they need, and it is part of a general trend towards consolidation as the latest trends in glass definitely point towards a greater need for specialist machinery. “But some companies have struggled because they aren’t

12 WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022

nimble. They are running out of puff.” Cornwall Group also has some significant infrastructure plans in the pipeline. The construction of a new £6m state-of-the-art facility at Highbridge in Somerset will begin later this year which will see approximately £3.5m spent on a new furnace, a new unit line, new heat soak ovens, and a specialist lamination line, which will dominate 6,000 square-feet on its own. It will also create 30 jobs. “Toughened laminate used to be an aspirational purchase, but many projects are now specifying toughened laminates either because of regulations or because designers are pushing the limits that glass is capable of, such as walk-on roofs,” he said. Highbridge was singled out because of its proximity to the M5 and M4, offering significant opportunities to expand the group’s reach out east. cornwallglass.co.uk

Over 30 Benefits Of Joining DGCOS (Double Glazing & Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme)

The Double Glazing & Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS) starts 2022 on a mission to demonstrate and grow understanding of how the consumer protection organisation offers fenestration businesses a critical point of difference with the launch of its Installer Journey Benefits. The offering includes an inclusive summary of all the ways DGCOS can help installers on their installer journey and clearly states DGCOS’s intentions to help installers, protect consumers and continue to raise industry standards. Faisal Hussain, chief executive of DGCOS explains more: “Our mission for 2022 is to grow understanding of how DGCOS can benefit the entire installer journey and demonstrate to forward-thinking installers how working with us can give them a critical point of difference and real, true business support. Many will be familiar with the DGCOS brand and our consumer protection allegiance. Some

installers may know us as the ‘George Clarke scheme’ while other installers rely on our practical support day in day out as a DGCOS member. “DGCOS has an established position, having strong partnerships forged with financial bodies, insurance houses and Competent Person Schemes (CPS), and we’ve been working hard to ensure we can add value at every single point of an installer’s journey. We have summarised this in our Installer Journey Benefits which details the wide range of benefits of working with us, from setting up and registering a new business, marketing and digital support, sales advice and POS, installation, customer service and satisfaction, to annual reviews to see how together we can keep on improving. We can be the sounding-board, the friend and the strategic and practical partner to forward-thinking installers. “There are in fact over 30 ben-

efits and to give a flavour of some of the practical ways in which we’re currently helping our installers: we’re paying for the CPS notification fees saving members approximately £1.65 per notification; introducing them to finance brokers/lenders to gain access to consumer finance; offering 24/7 access to our online portal for installers to register their installations; providing access to an independent Ombudsman to prevent issues from snowballing in time and cost. We’re especially proud that our DGCOS marketing collateral has been awarded the Plain English Crystal Mark which is a seal of approval demonstrating that our collateral is clear and can help consumers understand exactly what they’re getting when they buy from a DGCOS member. And of course, yes, we do have the powerful endorsement of our brand ambassador, George Clarke, for members to use. “As DGCOS is all about transparency, it’s worth saying upfront that DGCOS is not for everyone, and indeed we have a strict vetting process to join. We probably are ideal partners for about 10% of installation businesses working day in day out in the double glazing sector. But for those who have joined, they say that membership is invaluable. “We’re proud and delighted with the strong position that the DGCOS brand is in as we start the new year. We want to share the benefits of our powerful business support engine with as many installation businesses as possible, to collaboratively raise industry standards and ultimately help and protect both consumers and our members in an ethical way. “DGCOS is the industry’s consumer champion and we invite you to join us on the journey in 2022.” www.dgcos.org.uk

IGU Manufacturers Turn To Automation As Skills Crisis Bites It’s these issues in particular that Edgetech believes are driving more IGU manufacturers towards automation, as managing director Chris Alderson explains.

nterest in automation among British IGU manufacturers is higher than ever according to spacer bar specialists Edgetech. Over the last two years, British fenestration has experienced incredible success despite the pandemic. However, during the last six months in particular, it’s also begun to face huge challenges, most notably when it comes to materials and skills.

“A third of British workers are over 50 years old, it’s thought as many as 1.3 million EU workers have left the country since Brexit, and the scarcity of skilled workers is already leading to wage inflation. “Unsurprisingly, this has led to more and more IGU manufacturers contacting us to enquire about automating the spacer application process. “By far, automation is the best long-term strategy for boosting

productivity and improving quality in IGU production. “Switching to a high-speed automated Super Spacer® line can yield savings of up to £180,000, and increase output by 18%, all while requiring less than half the number of operators. “Given the pressures every manufacturing business faces when it comes to skills, and that will only increase in the months and years ahead, I think it’s inevitable that automation will become a much bigger part not just of our industry, but virtually every sector of the economy”. www.edgetechig.co.uk

EYG’s Kingston range has been developed to give buyers a stylish alternative to composite doors, with similar aesthetics and high levels of security, but at a much more competitive price, claims the company.

John Waugh, EYG’s domestic sales director, commented: “The Kingston range has all the premium features which retail buyers want, but without the premium price tag. Each one is handmade and mechanically jointed with perfectly proportioned glass panels. They come in a vast range of stable colours and lots of traditional and contemporary design options to suit any style or age of property.

Crucially, because these doors are produced in house at EYG’s state of the art factory in Hull, they are available without any of the supply chain delays which have plagued the composite market for many months. EYG has been consistently buying from Mila since 2003 and, during that time, Mila has proven its ability to supply on time and in full, even during the worst of the pandemic,

This supply chain security was part of the reason for choosing the Mila stainless steel range for the Kingston doors, along with the proven quality of Mila’s Supa stainless steel products, which all come with a 25-year surface finish guarantee.

“The inclusion of the Mila stainless steel products helps to emphasise the quality feel of the doors, and the combination of ProSecure handle, Mila cylinder and TS008 compliant letterplate mean they can achieve the Secured by Design Accreditation which so many retail buyers are looking for.”

Strategic Investment Sees AT Precision Double In Size Aluminium bi-fold hardware supplier AT Precision has doubled its turnover in the past 12 months, thanks to careful investments, expanded product ranges, and a continued dedication to excellent customer service despite a very challenging period for the industry. Sales director Michael Hewitt comments: “In the summer, we’d seen a 342% sales increase since we opened our doors in February 2020, but in the past six months, we’ve gone above and beyond to double our turnover, and I’m extremely proud of how far the business has come, despite the many difficulties across the board.”

Michael attributes the success to careful investments, which includes a factory expansion to 18,000 square feet, as well as the introduction of two new extrusion lines. This has enabled the Durham-based company to increase both production and capacity, meaning they are able to store at least three months’ worth of stock on their premises at all times, ensuring customers always receive the products they need, when they need them. The last 12 months has also seen AT Precision expand its product

UK Homeowners Prepared To Pay More For Products Seen As More Sustainable More than two-thirds of UK homeowners (68%) would choose windows and doors with a higher recycled content over and above products which don’t, or which do so at a lower level, according to a new study. The findings of the survey by leading pollster YouGov, also found that 63% of homeowners said that they would be more likely to purchase home improvements, which they saw as being more ‘sustainable’*. Commissioned by Deceuninck, the study also found that 38%, would be prepared to pay more for home improvement products that had higher recycled content and reduced impact on the environment.

Rob McGlennon, managing director of Deceuninck, said: “Sustainability is going to top the agenda for the next decade – it has to. “That growing awareness about climate-change and the negative impact we’re having as a global society on the planet, is filtering into each purchasing decision that we’re making as consumers. “This includes windows and doors. Products which are seen as being more energy efficient, more recyclable and which have a lower impact in manufacture, are increasingly important in driving the purchasing decisions of end users.” When asked to rank the importance of different factors which

Specialist PVC Offer Specialist aluminium fabricator Fentrade reports that there’s been a strong start to 2022 for commercial products. Chris Reeks, Fentrade’s director, commented: “Since we returned from the Christmas break, we’ve got a large pipeline of orders for our commercial products. It’s very encouraging to see because it reflects wider confidence in the commercial sector.”

Deceuninck has invested more the €15million in one of the world’s most advanced PVC-U recycling and compounding facilities. This gives it the capability to reprocess up to 45,000 tonnes of post-consumer and post-manufacturing PVC-U per year – the equivalent of preventing 3million windows from going to landfill annually. Use of recycled material also delivering a reduction in CO2 emissions of 90,000 tonnes compared to virgin feedstocks as well as a 90% energy saving. Rob continued: “There are big environmental benefits here, which every fabricator and installer should take notice of. “The co-extrusion technologies which we employ to bring product back into use isolate recycled content in areas away from the surface of the product and guar-

antee finish and performance – it’s a leading-edge process. “That directly benefits the environment, which for us is reason enough to do it. There are, however, commercial benefits right through the window and door supply chain, for fabricators – and for installers. “It’s not a question of do homeowners place a value on sustainability – they do. They will choose products which are more sustainable over those that are less so and many of them are also prepared to pay more. “We need to wake up and smell the coffee!” www.deceuninck.co.uk *Sustainability defined for the purpose of the questionnaire as how much energy a product or service uses in manufacturing or delivery, or if it includes recycled material or can be recycled.

For businesses looking to capitalise on the opportunities in the commercial sector, Fentrade makes an ideal partner. Chris said: “Our customers tell us they value our product range, our commitment to service and our attention to detail. They’re qualities that are valuable for every sector, but they’re especially important for businesses pursuing commercial contracts where future work depends to a large extent on past results.” Fentrade is a young company but its team has a wealth of industry experience that means it understands what customers need to succeed. The Joedan Group Marks 35 Years In Business With New Jobs And Exciting Expansion Plans One of Gloucestershire’s leading home improvement specialists is celebrating 35 years in business in style after it created 32 jobs to cope with a demand in its products and services.

The rebrand officially launches this month and will involve internal/external signage, as well as new marketing material, website, uniforms and livery over the coming months.

The Joedan Group, which is part of the Conservatory Outlet retail network, has seen sales increase by 25% since lockdown eased and has recently announced ambitious expansion plans to boost turnover to £25m by 2026.

John Purcaro, founder of the Joedan Group, explained: “Due to a period of significant growth and a recent £2m investment in new manufacturing and technology, we believe now is the right time to bring all our Design Centres under the Joedan name.

As part of this growth, the family-run business is gearing up for an exciting rebrand that will see all its Design Centres trading under the name of Joedan Windows & Doors, building on its proud history of designing, manufacturing, and selling bespoke aluminium windows and doors.

“The decision is the perfect opportunity to revitalise the Group and will not only strengthen our commitment to our staff, but will also reinforce our continued investment, unique product placement and dedicated service to our customers.”

Winchester (Hampshire), Orpington (Kent) and Newport (Isle of Wight) will follow its HQ in Tewkesbury and its design centre in Bournemouth to adopt the name change.

Joedan, which employs 148 people across its five sites in the UK, is proud of having its own production facilities and fabricating its own aluminium windows and doors, maximising unique designs and achieving the highest quality and service

The design and strength of the aluminium means that the frames can be thinner, allowing more glass to be used which lets in more natural light. John went on to add: “One of our key commitments is to reduce our ‘carbon footprint’ and our environmental philosophy and the operational choices we make reflect this. Our manufacturing, supply and installation operations follow strict recovery and recycling policies for example.” Along with the five Design Centres and manufacturing facility, Joedan also owns Joedan Commercial Division, a market leader in commercial glazing refurbishment, providing local authorities, schools, architects and building contractors with a diverse choice of architectural glazing systems. The firm’s experience and expertise has already transformed all kinds of buildings, including hospitals, schools, fire stations, retirement homes, offices and business premises. According to new research, those with limited natural light at home generally rate their physical and mental wellbeing lower

Tough Year Ahead For Fenestration And Construction Industries

With the state of the market looking very different now to how it did at the end of the first national lockdown, it’s likely things will become much tougher for the industry in 2022 – especially as the surge in demand calms. That’s the view of Andrew Scott, managing director of marketing agency Purplex.

Andrew commented: “It goes without saying but the industry boomed last year. Companies were inundated with requests and order books were fuller than they’ve been for years, despite the material and labour shortages. “With lockdown restrictions in

Covid changed the way the market previously operated and so the last 21 months have been an anomaly – but we’re finally starting to see activity stabilise and return to pre-pandemic levels. “As things settle down and level off, it’s more important now than ever that companies invest in their marketing activity to ensure they continue operating in the same way.

To Pay More For IGUs? Chris Alderson, managing director of Edgetech, explores the challenges facing IGU manufacturers, and whether the situation is starting to improve. In January 2020, I went to Peterborough for a roundtable discussion on the state of Britain’s IGU sector.

For years, I’d strongly felt that British IG manufacturers were getting a raw deal. They’d driven huge improvements in unit performance and energy efficiency – but that investment and innovation wasn’t being rewarded. In fact, glass was increasingly

being treated as a commodity, and the businesses that made it were constantly being squeezed on price. I wanted that to change – and after discussions with Edgetech’s marketing company Purplex, we decided to bring together key figures from around the sector to discuss the issue, and what we could do to tackle it. Two years on, looking back on that day is a surreal experience. We had no idea what was lying around the corner. We’d all heard about this

VIEWPOINT changed, I want to discuss the challenges IG manufacturers face in more detail.

form one here?

Where does that constant pressure to offer rock bottom prices come from? In Peterborough in 2020, this was one of our main topics of conversation. Several people around the table had been told by installers that it was essentially homeowners’ fault – they were the ones who didn’t see the value in glass, and weren’t willing to pay more for high-performance units. But other attendees challenged that perspective. They believed that homeowners do value glass, when the benefits are properly explained to them, and that they’d happily pay more for an A+-rated unit given the potential long-term savings on energy. The honest answer is that we don’t know for certain – and the most likely explanation is that it’s the result of attitudes from all different sections of the supply chain, in some cases based on warped perceptions of what homeowners value.

strange new virus causing problems in China. But the idea that the same virus would soon see the country plunged into a series of strict national lockdowns would’ve seemed extremely far-fetched. Remarkably, though, for all its challenges, there are signs the pandemic is beginning to redress the balance when it comes to IG. Manufacturers still face many difficulties – but things may be gradually starting to shift. The race to the bottom But before we look at what’s

But whatever the root cause, there’s no quick and easy solution.

The day in Peterborough was only designed to be a preliminary discussion, so, unsurprisingly, we didn’t come to any firm conclusions. Many of the issues we discussed still remain. But at the very least, there are indications that the wider glazing sector is finally starting to value what IG manufacturers do. Achieving true value Since COVID, fenestration has seen incredible success, and incredible disruption – most notably of all, a severe supply chain crisis. That’s meant that inflation for all sorts of materials has naturally been driven up – including glass. Given how much the supply chain has resisted any attempt to even slightly raise glass prices over the years, I was expecting my IG customers to have a very difficult time trying to push those increases through. To my surprise, though, in most cases they seem to have been accepted. Certainly, we’re in an exceptional situation, and this willingness to pay more could simply be companies recognising that and being more reasonable as a result.

In Peterborough, we discussed the options available to us. Could we pool resources, and try and raise awareness of the critical importance of IGUs among homeowners? Or, as some there on the day argued, would that be prohibitively expensive, and would educating fabricators and installers be a better route to take? Is one of the key problems the fact that the IG sector lacks any representation and lobbying power? There are IGU manufacturers’ associations in Australia and the US – do we need to

But it’s my hope that the market is finally beginning to see the value of quality IGUs, and acknowledging the fantastic service that modern IG manufacturers provide. Most of the big issues we discussed in Peterborough back in 2020 remain unsolved – but even if nothing else has shifted since then, to me, that’s progress. www.edgetechig.co.uk

But it wasn’t just a question of stepping up the conversations outside of the organisation. Internal communication was just as important in keeping a business on track and agile in rapidly changing times.

One company that really focused on ramping up the dialogue between colleagues over the last 2 years was Window Ware. And all that extra talking has really paid off. It’s enabled the hardware distributor to not only successfully navigate all the peaks and problems of the pandemic while still managing to keep their customers happy, but to also grow the business and ultimately hit the ground running in 2022. The Business Pilot Barometer Sales bounce back in January, but are things about to slow? By Neil Cooper-Smith, Senior Analyst, Business Pilot

Figures for window and door sales last month [January 2022] show a 47% uplift in sales as the industry shook off the festive period hangover and got back to business. Lead generation more than doubled, up 105% on December’s figures. Conversions, however, slowed, dropping by almost 12%, while average installed values fell by half to around the £4,400 mark. 34 WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022

Figures for the housing market are also mixed. House prices rose at their fastest annual pace for 17-years in January at 11.2% year on year and up 0.8% on December. The flip side of that coin is that the figures were accompanied with a warning from Nationwide that the increase was based on lower levels of stock.

It warned with average house prices hitting £255,556 combined with wider inflationary pressures it expected the number of transactions this year to slow. Underlying concern about the rate of inflation makes it likely that the Bank of England, which increased interest rates to 0.25% in December, will introduce further increases in the months ahead, something which is likely to further compound

VIEWPOINT house price affordability. A slower housing market would historically suggest a toughening of conditions in the window and door industry. We think, however, with many people still working from home, or moving to hybrid models of work, even if we see a slowdown in housing transactions, demand will be sustained into the first half of the year.

The hiatus of spring and summer 2020 and 2021, is however, in our view unlikely to be repeated. Sales in January 2022 are 14% down year-onyear on the same time in 2021. Compared to January 2020 (that’s pre-COVID) they’re 36% down. As we have said before, we don’t see a cliff edge. Even if transactions are lower in the housing market, as long as prices hold up, homeowners will be prepared to spend. But with further increases in interest rates likely, albeit from historically low levels, and inflation putting a squeeze on household incomes, we don’t see a repeat of the past two-years, which makes good business discipline – effective lead and cashflow management, as well as operational efficiency, important. Designed by installers for installers, Business Pilot is about that – good business discipline. We can help you track and manage leads, supporting the conversion process, while with drag

Dried Up In The UK? Dear Gerald

An open letter from Ryan Breslin, Cherwell Windows As an installation business, in my role at Cherwell, rather than Business Pilot, we’re at the sharp end. We need to be able to offer homeowners products that they want to buy – to tap into their aspirations and give them something that excites them. It’s over-used, but it’s that ‘Grand Designs-effect’. That’s reshaped, and continues to reshape, retail. Cherwell works in mid and higher-end tiers of the market. What we see in common across each, is that our customers are buying into a lifestyle. They want to feel good about their purchases. This means that they’re looking for products that fit. Products which have a strong aesthetic quality but also, which deliver on performance, and to find those, we increasingly find ourselves looking to Europe, rather than the UK. I totally appreciate that challenges in the supply chain have made it very difficult to bring innovation forward, here in the UK, or anywhere else. With a little luck, we may see new products coming online this year, as it stands today, however, 36 WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022

things have become a little stale, and we’re sourcing more of the products that we fit, from outside the UK. That’s not because I want to talk down manufacturers here. It’s simply that as a retailer, I can’t always supply the products that my customers want, from the UK. These are products that drive our industry forward and which shift window and doors from a commodity to an aspirational purchase. As a personal example, I’m currently building what will be our ‘forever home’. We’re making it as eco-friendly as possible, so energy efficient, ground source heat pumps, all those good things – things that will lower our living costs and which make us feel better about what we’re doing. We also want it to look good. What is disappointing is that we have had to source windows and doors to do that from Germany and Austria, because the products here didn’t deliver what we wanted. This is a project-house, and not everyone’s installation will be quite as demanding – but surely it should be available in the UK, there should be a manufacturer meeting that demand. And they aren’t. What concerns me is it’s not only the high-end market. Although there are some solid products among them, the solutions that we can offer to aspirational homeowners in the mid-markets are limited.

DEAR GERALD At present lead generation doesn’t matter. The work is there, and too much of it – but that’s inevitably going to change at some point, maybe this year, maybe next. We need to be selling homeowners a vision of their future selves and underpinning that with great customer experience. That comes back to having those products and service.

We can meet it from Europe but I’d much rather do so from here. Ryan Breslin Managing Director Cherwell Windows

Putting my hat on as a director and founder of Business Pilot, that’s what it exists to do – to help installers deliver great customer experience by helping them to manage every touch point with the consumer from enquiry to installation and aftercare. Business Pilot also helps you to understand which products are making you money in real time – and trust me, it’s not standard windows and doors. I want to close out on a positive. There are big opportunities ahead. The more focus homeowners bring to the design of windows and doors, their performance, how sustainable they are, how they integrate with smart tech in their home, the bigger the opportunity.

Sheerline Appoints New Paint Plant Manager

Aluminium extrusion manufacturer Garnalex has appointed Greg Grabski, a highly experienced production manager, to help the company introduce a state-ofthe-art powder coating plant at its existing UK manufacturing facility, all part of its ambitious growth plans.

strategy to ensure customers gain competitive advantage by dealing with a British supplier.”

Greg is well-versed in working in fast-paced production environments, having previously worked for a global automotive company in a similar role. Greg will be responsible for overseeing and managing the execution of the new aluminium paint machinery, day-to-day operations and employing the right skilled workers to optimise the efficiency of the new facility.

Garnalex began manufacturing its Sheerline aluminium products in 2020, after investing over £15m in energy-efficient machinery at its site in Derbyshire. Since then, the business has seen unprecedent growth of its Classic and Prestige systems, Prestige Bi-fold Doors, and the S1 Roof Lantern. A key contributing factor to this exceptional growth has been Garnalex’s high level of vertical integration, sourcing material from within the UK to produce all major components from a single production site. This provides customers with reduced lead times, and lower carbon emissions.

Greg commented: “I am not from a fenestration background, but it is clearly evident that Garnalex has impressive plans to grow Sheerline’s range of products and support the company’s overall

Greg continues, “Even though we manufacture all major components for Sheerline on site, we currently subcontract the painting. With this investment, we will gain greater control over how the prod-

In the coming months, I will be tasked with providing customers with a smooth, seamless shift in supply, supervising the installation of the new paint facility and contribute to reducing customer lead-times on a long-term basis.” Garnalex production director Ross Hartshorn adds, “Greg was the ideal candidate for this position, having spent 15 years in a similar environment, acquiring a deep understanding of quality management systems, recruiting, and training staff, and working at senior management levels. As a result of Greg’s previous knowledge, he will know-doubt provide Garnalex with the expertise we need to ensure our customers continue to receive quality products, in the timeframe they need. We are extremely pleased to have him on board.” Sheerline products will continue to be available in the same full range of traditional colours as well other premium, anodised, and bespoke finishes, but supplied with a reduced carbon-footprint and with a greater degree of control, strengthening Sheerline’s agile supply promise. www.sheerline.com www.sheerlinevideo.com

The East Kilbride site deals with VBH’s customers in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland, as well as some in the English northern counties. The growing number of customers within these areas, coupled with the increased workload brought about by record sales levels, have resulted in Pamela assuming more responsibilities for the day-to-day running of the site. This is reflected in the fact that two of our warehouse team, Jonny Torley and Cameron Cole each received enough nominations from our customers that they both reached a final shortlist in November’s National Fenestration Awards.” Allan Price concludes with “VBH Scotland and the customers that we serve have always been a major factor in the success of VBH and that continues to this day. It’s assembled and fitted just like a traditional letter plate in just a couple of minutes with no special screws or routing, and the fact that the two parts of the letterplate are packaged separately means we can mix and match finishes on dual colour doors if that’s what customers want. “The product obviously meets the Door and Hardware Federation’s TS008: 2015 security standard, and the updated PAS24:2016 required for SBD accreditation, which is a big USP for our trade customers, but it doesn’t have any of the bulky cowls or cumbersome add-ons that we’ve seen in SBD letterplates from other hardware companies. Simon Felstein, managing director of Nova Group with the Mila TS008 compliant letterplate

‘Game Changing’

Mila Letterplate Endorsed By Nova Group When Mila launched its new Kitemarked SupaSecure and ProSecure letterplates in the summer of 2021, it called the product a ‘game changer’. The design of the letterplate means that it protects against opportunist thieves using the letterplate to ‘fish’ for keys and valuables or manipulate the locking system, but it is still as slim, leakproof (achieving BS6375-1) and easy to fit as a traditional letterplate.

As a result, the response from the market has been exceptional, with both high and low volume customers making the switch to the SupaSecure stain-

less steel version in particular. One typical fabricator is the Altrincham based trade specialist Nova Group, which is now fitting the new Mila SupaSecure letterplate as standard on all its Secured by Design accredited residential doors.

“It’s particularly slim, protruding just 45mm on the inside of the door and comes in a great range of high quality polished and brushed stainless steel finishes, all with the reassurance of a 25-year mechanical and surface finish warranty from Mila. “Nova was founded way back in 1971, and we’ve worked hard over those five decades to build a reputation for quality, service and product innovation. It’s no surprise then that we choose our products and our supply partners with extreme care, and the Mila TS008 letterplate is proving a great addition to our range.”

For Nova’s managing director Simon Felstein, the decision to choose Mila was easy. He said: “What’s clear from the design of the letterplate is that it’s got the fabricator firmly in mind.

The Mila TS008 letterplate is a patent-pending design featuring anti-fishing fins which open with a smooth concertina action to allow mail to be posted through. Crucially though, the fins restrict the internal flap opening to 80° and this, in combination with an angled postal ramp which deflects items upwards, is what makes fishing impossible.

“Just like the Mila ProSecure door hinge which has been on our doors for a long time, it’s

Roto’s Innovative Inowa

From Carl F Groupco

Carl F Groupco, a major stockist of Roto hardware, reports increasing demand from fabricators for the innovative Patio Inowa sliding door hardware system. Launched in the hardware distributors range in 2020, the sliding door system has gathered momentum thanks to its enhanced functionality and security options. Commenting on the increase in demand Julie Warner, Carl F Groupco’s Roto product manager said: “There has been a significant increase in interest from fabricators for the Roto Patio Inowa range in the last 6 months partly due to Aluplast launching their SmartSlide door which features the hardware. Inowa is particularly popular for new build installations as the system meets many stringent regulations, namely the rain and air impermeability test to BS EN 13126-17 and the ability to achieve PAS 24 security. “As with all Roto hardware, the Inowa is also supplied with Grade 5 corrosion resistance as standard which assists with its suitability for coastal and high-rise installations.” Innovating sliding door hardware with the Patio Inowa system, Roto ensured users could comfortably slide sash weights up to 250kg for timber, PVCu and aluminium profiles. Minimum effort is required to move sashes as the closing movement is perpendicular to the frame profile and roller bearings mean that it is not necessary to lift the sash. Soft functionality also gently brakes the sash when coming to a stop in the open or closed position, ensuring safe opening, every time. Equally suited for low- and high-rise applications, including coastal or penthouse living, Patio Inowa hardware keeps the sash tightly sealed in bad weather conditions thanks to the circumferential gasket and active control of locking points. The system is also capable of achieving PAS 24 compliance be securing locking points in the mullion and V locking cams. The handle is also lockable with drilling protection. https://bit.ly/3JooJbo www.carlfgroupco.co.uk www.smartsecure.co.uk www.carlfdirect.co.uk

Juna Promises Quality

And Convenience Bohle has launched the new Juna shower door hinge, which not only promises to bring quality and class to the top end of the market, but also offers significant benefits to the installer, claims the company. Developed and designed by Bohle, the new Juna hinge for glass shower doors boasts minimum gap dimensions, which give a clean high-quality appearance. Other modern aesthetic features include no visible screws, a practically continuous sealing strip, and the above-average return angle of 20°, which closes the glass door automatically. The Juna shower door hinge was also designed with the installer in mind. For example, the zero-position adjusting screw is easily accessible and enables convenient adjustment: the clamping screws and the zero-position fixing screw have uniform screw heads, which can be tightened with just one tool, reducing clutter and inconvenience on site. Furthermore, the centred mounting plate is designed to perfectly locate the cover cap, which guarantees a firm and precise fit. “The bathroom became something of a sanctuary during the pandemic – a place of calm and relaxation,” Dave Broxton, Bohle’s MD said. “It’s no wonder that as lockdown restrictions were lifted, it was one of the first rooms in the house to get some much-needed care and attention. “In keeping with the attitude to improvements elsewhere in the home, we are seeing people gravitate towards higher value installations. This means there is no better time for installers to have the Juna shower door hinge in their product portfolio.” Tested to 100,000 cycles, the Juna shower door hinge is made from brass and stainless steel to help guarantee a long service life. It also has a load capacity of 50kg per pair. www.bohle.com WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022 47

It also, of course, comes with all the other benefits which come from buying from the Blackburn-based fabricator, including some of the quickest turnaround times in the industry and direct delivery to site in unbranded vehicles. Russell Yates adds: “Back when I joined AluFold Direct in 2020, it was already amongst the most efficient fabricators in the UK. Since then though, we’ve transformed the entire operation, massively increasing capacity and guaranteeing consistent, highly repeatable precision outputs in doors, windows and rooflights. “Unlike most aluminium fabricators who put multiple products down the same assembly lines and accept the limitations that puts on speed and volumes,

we now have three dedicated high-speed lines, each with their own top of the range cutting and machining centres and fully automated four head crimpers. “We are producing both our Standard and Premium Bifolds on our dedicated doors line and delivering the same efficiencies on both. Stellar Ready

For The Changes To Part L

The new Part L of Building Regulations, which comes into force on 15 June 2022, is the biggest shake-up of thermal performance regulations for a number of years. As such, the regulations will be especially complicated for many aluminium systems to meet, says Epwin Window Systems. But one system is good to go already – Stellar, the company’s multi-award-winning aluminium system.

Phil Parry, business development director at Epwin Window Systems, says: “Stellar’s unique design doesn’t use dummy sashes or rebate adaptors so it’s more thermally efficient by design. Plus, its thermal breaks can be upgraded to meet the demands of thermal regulations that will only get stricter over time. It means we’re already ahead of the market and many systems will have to be redesigned and reconsidered to meet the new requirements.”

According to Epwin Window Systems, the new regulations pose a problem for many aluminium systems because of the way the U value now must be calculated. Instead of being calculated on a 1230w x 1480h single opening casement (known as the CEN standard window), U values must be calculated on the GGF 2.2 window configuration, as used in WERs. This is a window with an opening light next to a fixed light with a central mullion. It’s harder to achieve the required U value on this configuration because there is more frame than in a CEN standard window. It’s especially problematic for aluminium windows that use a dummy sash or rebate adaptor to create an internally beaded fixed light next to an opener because they use even more frame. Stellar uses a patented reverse butt joint. It means there’s no need for dummy sashes, reverse profiles or adaptors. It helps it to meet the

50 WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022

requirements of the new Part L legislation with the added benefit of being ready for the proposed amendments to Approved Document Q too. To illustrate the difference the patented construction makes, Epwin Window Systems’ certified BFRC simulators simulated two GGF 2.2 windows. The first was a Stellar window constructed with a dummy sash. The second was Stellar window constructed using the patented reverse butt joint. The reverse butt jointed window achieved a calculated improvement of 0.1W/(m2K) over the dummy sash variant. Phil concludes: “Stellar was always designed to be competitive yet future proof. It’ll be ready for the changes now and it’ll be ready in the future too. Its stunning aesthetics mean it attracts consumer attention like no other aluminium system. And with the introduction of the new Part L, there’s yet another reason for it to be the aluminium system of choice in fabricators’ and installers’ portfolios.” www.stellaraluminium.co.uk

According to managing director Jimmy Cardno, they were looking for an aluminium supplier with

a good reputation coupled with exceptional product performance, and Sheerline, with its innovative product design, ease of fabrication and excellent service was the ideal solution. “Demand from our customers has been growing for a full suite of aluminium products.” Jimmy explains, “We recognised from the many features Sheerline has to offer how this would benefit our existing product portfolio. The Classic system with beadless and flush finishes presents something different to that in the

PRODUCT NEWS property. Getting the colour right will depend on a few considerations, including whether there are any colour restrictions on the property. Some listed buildings or new builds could have covenants or restrictions which dictate the colour palettes that can be used on an entrance door, in order to keep an aesthetic continuity within a particular area. One of the key factors to consider when talking to consumers, is the overall existing look from the outside. Additionally, it is important to evaluate the exact colour shade of a front door when standing outside. Deborah continues, ‘It is probably wise to have narrowed down some colour options that will match with an existing house aesthetic. To simplify this, look at the colour of the windows and any other primary colour coated products such as gutters and fascias.”

Kolorseal

Advises: Know Your Kolors!

There may also be some considerations people might want to give to colour choice based on how that particular shade might reflect on them as people. A composite door that has been colour sprayed yellow suggests warmth with friendly occupants. Alternatively for those homeowners into feng-shui then a blue sprayed front door suggests peace and tranquility while green generates feelings associated with safety and security. When it comes to helping end users choose the right colour then red and black are always timeless classics.

For Deborah Hendry, managing director at Kolorseal Ltd, the entrance to a home helps to reflect lifestyle choices. It is viewed as the focal point for any property and it is now being used by consumers to reflect lifestyles and individual personalities. Getting the colour right is essential.

For consumers who are very into the design and aesthetic of their home then a shade of red is probably the most powerful colour to install. It reflects power and in feng-shui terms it provides protection, passion and is considered the luckiest colour of them all. Certainly, a bright red front door will be noticed.

“Choosing the right colour is more difficult than people may realise, which is something installers should consider when approaching the end user about door renovation or installation projects.

Deborah concludes, “Knowing what colours signify could be very important to some people, so for installers who understand this then it could be the difference between making the sale or not.

First impressions are absolutely everything when it comes to property, and homeowners have grown bolder in their colour preferences. A beautifully colour coated front door makes all the difference, and today, there are pretty much no limits,” Deborah comments.

There are some simple things to consider when choosing a shade, but probably the most important is complementing the tones and materials that are already there, in the property. Advise homeowners to evaluate their surroundings and to coordinate to get the best from the colours chosen.

For fabricators and installers it is all about providing as much choice as possible, and the Kolorseal team understands this. Giving a broad range of colour coating options enables them to offer homeowners the design and overall appeal they want for their

For fabricators looking to add a little more choice to their business, then increasing their colour portfolio on windows, doors or rainwater products will be very advantageous.” www.kolorseal.co.uk

See The Light

With SupaLite’s Sky Vista In recent years, homeowners have been waking up to the advances in conservatory technology. In particular how new hybrid products, which incorporate solid roofs and glass, are helping to fully transform these kinds of spaces into useable rooms. Combining tiled roof replacements with glass creates great results for the consumer – especially for those who are craving more natural light. The hybrid roof system combines SupaLite’s lightweight tiled roof with high-performance glazed panels, giving homeowners thermal performance, while also benefiting from higher levels of natural light.

“Our Sky Vista product offers consumers the best of both worlds. Bringing more natural light into the home is no doubt an attractive prospect for lots of people, so installers should be offering a hybrid product option to consumers if they’re not already,” said Steve Hacking, SupaLite’s managing director. “Our kit-based roof systems are incredibly popular with our approved SupaLite fabricators and installers, and we’re confident this will continue as homeowners are looking for simple and effective ways to create more natural light in their conservatories.”

56 WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022

Sky Vista is an ultra-clever and advanced product which has excellent U-value properties and effective solar control claims the company. It allows homeowners to easily regulate the temperature of their conservatory while letting plenty of natural light to flow through the whole space. Additionally, with self-cleaning properties there’s no maintenance involved for consumers who choose the Sky Vista product. Available in a ray of design options and colours, Sky Vista can also be configured to numerous conservatory styles including Edwardian, Victorian and Lean-to. The product can also be used with SupaLite’s Extralight textured steel tiles, which offer exceptional strength, durability and are much faster to fit – saving installers time on site, says the company.

Need For Speed Helps Warm Roof

Pro Popularity Soar

Warm Roof Pro the Cambridgeshire-based manufacturer and supplier has gone from making five Warm Roof Pro roofs when lockdown first hit to currently producing between 25-30.

The all-timber conservatory roof system uses highly insulated SIPS (Structural Insulated Panels) making it much more thermally efficient, claims the company. And while this is a huge selling point, Eco-Logic Roofing Systems’ sales director Ian Cowling says its stress-free assembly on site is another reason for its growing popularity. Following it’s launch in 2019, the Sky Vista product was developed further by SupaLite into a glazing cassette. This update means the glass units can be lifted and dropped into place, making it as easy as possible for installers. “Fitting the glass is often where installers may lose time and money but now our glass units can be dropped into place whole. As a result, the installer will be able to spend less time on site, and improve their profit margins,” adds Steve. Since launching just a few years ago, SupaLite has seen its fabricators and installers have great success with the Sky Vista product and this is expected to continue as more consumers are looking for ways to update and improve their conservatories. www.supaliteroof.co.uk

Ian said: “With demand for home improvements at an alltime high, installers need to be able to do jobs quickly. Speedy installation also enables installers to reduce fitting costs, drives down time on site and causes less disruption for the homeowner during the project. “The Warm Roof Pro is supplied in kit form with an installation guide, fixings, breathable membrane, flashband and eaves trays to enable a quick, stressfree assembly on site, making it perfect. The flat pack also makes it easier to transport and handle.” Ian also believes the rise in demand is in line with homeowners looking to improve the performance of their conservatories. “Traditional polycarbonate roofs are renowned for making conservatories too hot in the sum-

mer and too cold in the winter, and with homeowners spending more time in their homes, making improvements so that the family are comfortable have been a priority,” said Ian. “And while most solid conservatory roof systems comprising of a structural aluminium skeleton covered with timber boards have been favoured in the past due to strength, they have always had issues with retaining heat. “Constructed solely from timber, the Warm Roof Pro eliminates many of the issues associated with roofs with an aluminium skeleton, including metallic cold spots, condensation, and frequent draughts, creating a true warm roof, and helping a conservatory stay at the perfect temperature all year round.” The Warm Roof pro is providing installers nationwide with a valuable proposition, with Eco-Logic Roofing Systems also offering installation training, seven-10-day lead times, delivery to site, and on-site support for any manufacturing problems. warmroofpro.co.uk

And one company that’s benefitted from this service for over 13 years is Euramax Solutions. The Barnsley-based company is a leading manufacturer and supplier of uPVC windows and doors to the off-site and modular construction, DIY and home improvement, new build and holiday home markets. Euramax Solutions managing director, Nick Cowley, comments: “We started working with Edgetech in 2008, and since then, they’ve been supplying us with their very high-quality Super Spacer warm-edge spacer bars, which we use in the glass units for all our products across our

holiday home, DIY, and modular ranges. “During the first Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020, we stopped manufacturing altogether, but when we returned, Edgetech was just as reliable as ever, helping to keep our production line going during a very challenging period rife with supply chain disruptions. “Today we’re making around 4,000 frames per week, and in order to make that happen, our manufacturing process needs to be as efficient as possible. “Edgetech’s Super Spacer doesn’t need to be cut into bar length form, doesn’t need to have a PIB primary seal applied, and doesn’t need to be filled with desiccant, allowing us to really streamline our processes.”

58 WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022

Super Spacer is one of the best IGU perimeter insulators on the market, preventing heat loss and ensuring windows and doors achieve high energy ratings and lower energy costs, thanks to its low conductivity. The dual seal insulating glass spacer system uses high-performance acrylic adhesive, and is backed by a multi-layer moisture vapour seal, reducing window u-values by up to 0.2W/m²K and noise pollution by up to 2dB. Edgetech managing director Chris Alderson comments: “Since partnering with Euramax Solutions, we’ve been delighted to supply such an innovative company in the industry with our products, and we were proud to have supported them through the challenges of lockdown. “We’re delighted that the company is happy with the service they’ve received from us – it’s a testament to our commitment to delivering fantastic products at affordable prices, while maintaining great customer relations. “We hope to continue this level of service with Euramax Solutions – and all our customers – for many years to come.” www.edgetechig.co.uk

SOFTWARE we continue to grow.” Currently, the Making Your Space configurator is the big differentiator which is helping to generate enquiries from both the trade and retail markets. It sits on the new Making Your Space website at www.makingyourspace.co.uk and allows homeowners to design their dream garden room, get an indication of cost and then submit an enquiry.

Making Your Space

Partners With

Business Micros Group The breadth of expertise within the Business Micros Group, and its reputation as the industry’s number one software provider, meant it was the first choice to partner with Making Your Space when the company was planning its high-profile launch into the premium garden room and outdoor living market.

The team behind Making Your Space wanted to create a stylish, consumer-friendly website which would engage homeowners and also deliver a completely new 3D configurator to drive retail enquiries and give a real USP to trade customers. Web design came courtesy of Business Micros Group company The Consultancy and the 3D configurator was created by the same in-house programming experts behind the Business

Soundcraft Reaps Benefits From

LogiKal And CAD-PLAN Tie Up Orpington-based Soundcraft is reporting really significant savings in design time for some of its most complex elements in aluminium, thanks to the addition of CADPLAN’s ATHENA software to its LogiKal set-up. Soundcraft has been using BM Aluminium’s LogiKal software very successfully alongside AutoCAD for more than 5 years, but was looking for a new way to process more intricate configurations and speed up its workshop drawings. When BM Aluminium announced a tie-up with CAD-PLAN last year, the commercial window, door and curtain walling specialist was keen to explore the potential of the ATHENA CAD software package, knowing that the BM Aluminium team would be on hand to provide specialist help and support.

Essentially, ATHENA enables fabricators to generate workshop drawings from standard element data, with in-built 2D, 2D+ and 3D functionality. It provides a user-friendly drawing environment for even the most complex designs and generates both parts lists and production drawings. It speeds up the design time by automatically applying assemblies throughout an entire model and includes a live interface with LogiKal which means that, once an element has been approved, it can be exported straight to LogiKal for processing, cutting optimisation and material requisitions. Max Rozwadowski, Soundcraft’s design manager, explained how using ATHENA is removing the risk of human error, as well as saving time: “Previously, we were designing each job in AutoCAD, manually

Despite the challenges which the industry has faced in the past year, Leamore has praised Windowlink’s responsiveness as they have continued to provide top level service throughout this time.

preparing workshop drawings and then processing the design separately in LogiKal. That was leading to multiple interpretations and inputs, with lots of potential for mistakes which we had to spend a long time checking. “Now, we are designing all our bespoke items in ATHENA and exporting those direct to LogiKal, so there is only one set of inputs and only one round of checking required. Once a design is approved, it gets passed to our production team with minimal time needed on preparations and we know there are no differences between the drawings and what is being processed in LogiKal.” Soundcraft also plans to add BIM capabilities to its ATHENA package shortly and integrate BM Aluminium’s REVIT plug-in into its LogiKal set up as well so that it can collaborate more efficiently with the growing number of architects relying on BIM modelling tools. https://bit.ly/3oP7Mz7 www.soundcraft-doors.co.uk

600mm wide blades which move in two directions. On the horizontal axis, it can cut from 45° inwards to 22°30’ outwards and on the vertical axis it can cut from 0° to 45°. The movement of each blade is controlled via a combination of high precision gear motor and brushless motor with absolute encoder. For fabricators of curtain walling, the size and scale of the saw and the blade feed on two axes means it can cut profiles up to 525mm high and 225mm wide, with optimal adjustment of both the blade stroke and exit speed. The 4+4+1 clamp set-up provides for maximum stability to deliver an extremely precise cut. If special cuts are required, users can opt for a system of patented clamp devices which allow for vertical clamping. There is also a roller conveyor on the middle head for standard loading and unloading and pneumatic supports for smooth operation. Controlled by Emmegi’s user-friendly Emmegisoft software which makes it easy to programme cutting lists, it comes with a 10in touchscreen interface with full colour display. https://bit.ly/3rMzrT5

Epwin Window Systems Deliver On Transformation Of Detached Home 64 WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022

ON-SITE L Pearce Home Improvements installed four sets of PatioMaster doors including a largescale 4 pane sliding door with arched top on an upper floor balcony. The refurbishment was completed with Optima casement windows and doors along with a stand-out three metre 4-pane picture window to the front elevation. All products were manufactured in Antique Oak to fit the traditional character of the home and fabricated by longstanding Epwin Window Systems’ fabricator Heritage Trade Frames. Luke Pearce, founder of L Pearce Home Improvements, said: “The slimline profile and large glass area of the PatioMaster sliding doors and the superior aesthetics of Optima were perfect for this project because they maximise the views.” He added: “The homeowners are delighted, as are we. We’ve been installing Optima and PatioMaster since the business opened three years ago. They are high-quality systems that allow us to capitalise on highend domestic projects with exacting standards like this project.” He explained: “The products are easy-to-fit, which saves us time on site. Homeowners are always impressed with the quality too. Product operation, especially on the sliding doors, is very high-end and delivers on exacting expectations.”

Vista Contributes To Award-Winning Liverpool Development The Welsh Streets of Toxteth, a huge award-winning regeneration project in Liverpool that features composite door manufacturer Vista’s signature XtremeDoor, is due to be completed this April, creating over 200 affordable homes for local residents.

Project, Regeneration Award, and the Judges’ Award for Excellence.

In 2016, plans were made for the project with property specialists Placefirst to refurbish the city’s iconic area.

Providing everything you would expect from a classic composite door, the XtremeDoor provides superb thermal performance, incredible levels of security, and a customisable appearance that blends in with every kind of home, claims the company.

This was followed by a second stage in March 2018, where Plus Dane Housing and Liverpool City Council announced plans for a £17.4 million regeneration of the area to include the refurbishment of 127 properties, with an additional 99 homes to be completed this April. Since then, the Welsh Street project has won several North West Property Awards (NWPAs), including Best Affordable Housing

It was during the first stage of development that Merseyside firm Warwick Development chose Vista to install XtremeDoors in a range of colours.

Built in the 1870s to accommodate Liverpool’s growing population of dockers and their families, the Welsh Streets have become an icon of the city – they were the birthplace of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, and more recently formed the backdrop for the filming of BBC’s Peaky Blinders.

66 WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022

Today, thanks to the major regeneration project, the traditional houses have been recombined into two, three and four-bedroom homes, while retaining period features such as high ceilings and large windows. Ian Smith, Vista’s business development and marketing manager, comments: “Our XtremeDoor composite doors have played huge part in completely transforming the historic Victorian terraces of the Welsh Streets by preserving the rich heritage features whilst introducing several modern design interventions. “The result has been a remarkable revival as the properties have been turned into high-quality homes for working families to rent. “As a Merseyside business, we were incredibly proud to be able to support such a worthwhile project which has completely transformed an iconic area of Liverpool, and it was an honour to be involved in this process from and early stage and to see our XtremeDoor play a part in it. “I very much look forward to seeing the completed regeneration project in April.” www.vistapanels.co.uk

‘I Hadn’t Realised How Unobtrusive

My Secondary

Glazing Was Going To Be’ Secondary glazing manufactured and supplied by Granada Glazing has cured issues with heavy condensation on single-glazed windows for a couple in the Scottish Borders.

Jill and Francis Mordaunt are so delighted with the difference that secondary glazing has made to their comfort, they are planning to have it installed throughout their 1920s semi-detached home, which is in a

conservation area. The couple sought advice from Peeblesshire Windows on improving the thermal efficiency of their Peebles home, but their primary concern was condensation, especially in colder weather. “We’d been thinking about secondary glazing for eco reasons, but mainly because we’d had problems with condensation. On a cold morning, the windows would be running with water and that led to black mould round the edges of the windows. I really wanted to get rid of that,” explains Jill, a retired academic.

lines than its predecessor. Where condensation is a major issue, Granada Glazing often recommends secondary glazing with balanced trickle ventilation. This provides a simple, cost-effective, and permanent solution. The factory-fitted trickle ventilation system is both discreet and robust. It allows a simple, flexible method of providing the all-important background ventilation which will help to control condensation problems. “I hadn’t realised how unobtrusive the secondary glazing would be; you can hardly see it’s there. And the panels are so easy to open and close for ventilation,” continues Jill. “We’re very pleased with it and we like it so much that we’re going to have the rest of the house secondary-glazed.”

She says that having the six units installed – four vertical sliding units and two horizontal sliding units – has made a ‘huge difference’ to their living environment. The vertical sliders were glazed with 4mm toughened glass and the horizontal sliders were 6mm toughened glass. The original timber single-glazed windows in the sitting room, bathroom and a bedroom were all treated using Granada Glazing’s new high-specification secondary glazing range that offers the most discreet-looking solution on the market. With ultra-slim, durable aluminium frames, the entire range offers even narrower sight-

The cost-effectiveness of secondary glazing was another important factor in their decision-making as Jill comments: “We had an extension built with double-glazing and were thinking about going down that route to solve the condensation issue. However, at a cost of around £23k to £24k for six replica double-glazed windows versus around £3k to £4k for what we’ve had done, that was out of the question.” Jill has also noticed another welcome benefit of the secondary glazed windows; they are retaining more heat and helping to keep the rooms warmer, adding: “The sitting room is warmer in the morning, whereas it used to be chilly. It’s keeping the heat in. “Not only will secondary glazing solve my condensation problem, but it will also hopefully reduce our heating bills. And we’ve retained the character of the original windows.” www.gsecg.com

Secondary Glazing Helps

Lower Carbon Footprint Of Historic Museum Of London Derelict market buildings in the Conservation Area of Smithfield, central London have been converted to create a warmer, quieter and more secure environment to house the new Museum of London. The museum, formerly at 150 London Wall in east London, has moved to West Smithfield where it breathes new life into the historic market structures that reflect the working and trading history of the city. One of the highlights of the Culture Mile, the Museum’s new home in the Grade II listed Poultry Market delivers many more benefits, for many more people, including bet-

ter street-level access, improved transport links and larger exhibition spaces. Secondary glazing specialists Granada Glazing designed, manufactured and installed bespoke aluminium secondary glazing to improve the thermal, acoustic and security performance of the original timber single-glazed windows. Secondary glazing provides additional security benefits due to the extra internal glazing panels providing an extra barrier against unwanted intrusion. Working with the main contractors Rooff Ltd, Granada Glazing’s tech-

nical team devised the optimum secondary glazing solution to solve the key issues of external noise intrusion and preserving warmth in the large interior exhibition areas that are flooded with natural light. Granada’s team installed 30 secondary glazing units, including some substantial Horizontal and Vertical Sliders and Arched units that follow the shape of the primary windows. A mx of 6mm toughened glass panels and 6.4mm laminated safety glass panels were specified to satisfy the required thermal, safety and security secondary glazing requirements.

Checkatrade To Make Debut Appearance At FIT Show 2022

Checkatrade is set to make its debut at FIT Show, which is returning to the NEC between 10 – 12 May 2022. It will be exhibiting at FIT Show to raise awareness of the benefits of membership and to talk to installers about the demand it is currently seeing within the trade industry. the return of CR Laurence, FIT Show event director Nickie West said: “CR Laurence is a brilliant brand for our visitors, of which installers and fabricators make up the majority, to be able to see at FIT Show 22. “Like many companies, CRL has experienced a surge in demand on the back of the pandemic and we are excited to see their fantastic products, including the amazing Glass Rooms, up close at FIT Show.” Simon concludes: “Visitors to FIT can visit CRL on Stand A51 to find out more about this innovative system, at a time when homeowners are investing in the creation of such indoor/outdoor spaces and installers need a solution that is simple to install and offers a great deal of flexibility.” www.fitshow.co.uk

The business was founded in 1998 after a tornado hit a West Sussex village, causing rogue trades to flood in and rip off the locals. Checkatrade launched in order to help local people avoid these rogue trades, with its founder personally meeting and vetting every member. Today Checkatrade continues to carry out 12 checks on every member who wants to join, in turn giving quality tradespeople a unrivalled platform to promote their services to over 2 million homeowners each month. Alex Cubitt, chief growth officer at Checkatrade, comments: “Over the past two years the home improvement market has experienced exceptionally strong growth, bolstered by the increased amount of time we’ve all spent at home during the pandemic. We’re always on the

lookout for great trades who can help us meet the intense demand we’re seeing from homeowners. Exhibiting at FIT Show gives us the opportunity to speak directly to tradespeople about how Checkatrade can support them both now and in the future. 8 of 10 consumers would choose a Checkatrade endorsed trade and so there’s a great opportunity for us to help trades make the most of the current market conditions.” Speaking about Checkatrade’s presence at FIT Show 2022, event director Nickie West said: “Checkatrade is a huge household name, and one that we are delighted to be able to bring to FIT Show 2022. We are committed to driving quality across the glass and glazing industry – trust and transparency, as embodied by Checkatrade, is a huge part of this. “Our visitors will be able to tap into the wide-ranging expertise of the Checkatrade team who will be on hand to offer advice and support about better promoting their businesses to homeowners. Any platform that promotes quality and connects installers with homeowners can only be a good thing.” www.checkatrade.com WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022 73

Haffner

Says Size Does Matter! Haffner’s stand at this year’s FIT Show was already set to be one of the biggest stands in the show’s history. But the company has confirmed that it’s just got even bigger – the new space will be 610sqm. Dave Thomas, managing director of Haffner, said: “Our space at the FIT Show will be a must-visit for any fabricator. It will be first ever fully seamless machinery stand in the UK because it will showcase our complete Graf Synergy range, as well as machinery from our Haffner and FOM ranges.”

Haffner took the decision to extend the stand because of a rapid increase in demand and a stream of orders for fully seamless set-ups. Dave commented: “Fabricators are increasingly looking to use the latest technologies to deliver outstanding quality that feature-rich

products demand. The Graf Synergy range is the only range for this. It delivers world class seamless welding technology and patented welding techniques, increasing fabrication efficiencies and delivering superior product quality. By showcasing the entire range on our stand, we’ll be able to show more fabricators what it has to offer.” Haffner is the exclusive UK supply partner of Graf Synergy and its FIT Show stand will showcase machines capable of welding seamless corners, transoms, reverse butts, cruciforms and cills, showing how far the state-of-the-art machinery innovation has come. But the Graf Synergy range is only the start of what Haffner’s stand will have to offer. The company says it will be showcasing the

By being so large, the stand will also help delegates stay safe too, with easy access from all sides and plenty of space to remain socially distanced. Ian adds: “The FIT Show will be a great opportunity for anyone who isn’t familiar with integrated blinds to discover why they are gaining so much popularity. But aside from being able to touch, feel and try out our products, we can also explain how our service works and how we can offer the industry’s shortest lead times for a superior quality product which we make here in the UK.” Visit Morley Glass at stand N31 www.fitshow.co.uk www.morleyglass.co.uk

Emmegi (UK) Confirmed For FIT 2022

Emmegi (UK) has just announced that it will be back exhibiting at the FIT Show in May, with a stand showcasing a mix of its newest and most popular machines. After 3 years away, it will be a chance for new and existing customers to chat to the team and enjoy some classic Italian-style hospitality. Managing director Ian Latimer, said: “Since the beginning, FIT has been a really successful show for us – not just in terms of generating enquiries for new machines, but as a great place to meet up with customers and friends. With momentum building for the 2022 event, we didn’t want to miss out.

“Machinery is always a good draw for fabricators at exhibitions, so I hope the fact that there’s now another machinery company on the floorplan will encourage even more people to register.” FIT Show’s event director Nickie West agreed: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Emmegi back to FIT Show. Emmegi has supported every single FIT Show, growing its presence show-on-show. “Being able to see working machinery up close really does create lots of buzz and excitement on the show floor. Emmegi’s showcase is a prime example of how a trip to FIT really

does connect and engage the market on a scale like no other marketing medium. We’re in for a treat!” Ian added: “I’d like to think the whole industry will come out and support FIT this year – either as exhibitors or as visitors. It’s a really valuable asset to the market and, if we don’t all support it, we’re in danger of losing it and regretting it in the future.” More details of the machines to be featured, and the offers and promotions which visitors can expect, will be released ahead of the show in May. www.emmegi.com www.fitshow.co.uk

Gareth Jones.

“A key strength of the wider Solar group of companies is our extensive supply chain and the capability that this affords us in servicing customers. We’ve got excellent access to materials, production and distribution across the UK – something

which many companies have been blighted by over the course of the pandemic. I’d urge anyone who is seeking a new supplier in 2022 or beyond to come and chat with our team of experts on the Solar Calibre Doors stand.”

Nickie West, FIT Show event director adds: “It’s an exciting time for Solar Calibre Doors, with a new MD at the helm and with a business model that has thrived through the challenges of the last two years. Leads 2 Trade Working Even Closer With Members To Achieve Best Cost Of Sale Leads 2 Trade is working even closer with installers in 2022 as it looks to hit the ground running for its members. The provider of double-qualified sales leads to installers operating in the home improvement sector has always adapted it’s offering to provide members with the best leads, says the company. From premium lead delivery and pre-qualified hotkey telephone leads to its most recent no pitch no fee guaranteed booking appointment service, members of the company’s trusted installer network have been able to get leads delivered to them in a way best suited for them. And the Stockport-based company is working even closer with them

now to make sure they get the best lead value and achieve an acceptable cost of sale. Andy Royle, co-founder and managing director of Leads 2 Trade: “After the industry boomed last year, the landscape is set to change as this year progresses, with some installers already reporting a definite shift to receiving fewer enquiries from their self-generated efforts. “Sales leads will need to provide installers with even more value and while volume and price were once the most important thing, now it must be about conversion to appointment/survey and appointment to sale for businesses to grow. “That’s why we are working closer than ever with our members to

Leads 2 Trade’s free mobile app also means members will never miss a sale with appointment and lead alerts. “Our no pitch no fee is certainly providing unbeatable value for members with a cost of sale that’s almost three times less on average than for a standard double qualified lead, while our mobile app allows them to have reporting and sales conversion stats at their fingertips,” added Andy. “We have always been much more than a lead provider and the message is, tell us what your acceptable cost of sale is, and we’ll work with you to achieve it.” www.leads2trade.co.uk

A Showroom To Show Off For Epwin Window Systems’ Installer

L Pearce Home Improvements L Pearce Home Improvements, an Epwin Window Systems’ installer, has just opened a stunning new showroom in a Grade II-listed building which was previously an old pump house in Rhos-on-Sea, North Wales. The extensively refurbished building now showcases a wide range of Epwin Window Systems products including a selection of Optima PVC-U windows and doors, Stellar aluminium windows and doors and PatioMaster sliding doors. Taking centre stage is a 3.5 metre Stellar aluminium bifolding door which opens up to a kitchen bar area, demonstrating the open plan appeal that bifolding doors deliver. Despite the building’s historical heritage, the showroom has been purposely refurbished with a modern contemporary interior that has a fresh open appeal and complements the cutting-edge products on display. Its opening marks the next stage of the company’s im-

pressive three-year growth which has seen the business develop from a one man start up to a successful, established installation business. While the business has flourished due to the upturn in the domestic market as a result of the pandemic, founder Luke Pearce is clear that the products from Epwin Window Systems have played a crucial part. He said: “We have been fitting Optima and Patiomaster products since we started the business and introduced the Stellar aluminium range to our portfolio nine months ago. The aesthetics of the products is second to none and offer huge appeal to homeowners. Similarly, the quality and reliability of the products allow us to fit with confidence knowing we are not going to get any call backs. This protects our margins and our reputation.” The showroom, which opened

in January 2022, exudes quality at every level. Luke said: “As soon as customers drive up to the building there is an immediate wow factor. This opens the business up to a different demographic of customer and starts a first-class customer journey. Once inside, the showroom demonstrates the vast range and diversity of our offer in a clean, contemporary environment. This design approach was quite deliberate and capitalises on current design principles towards smoother, cleaner lines and less cluttered living. We are delighted with the end result and it’s proving very popular with customers both existing and new.” Gerald Allen, head of marketing at Epwin Window Systems commented: “The showroom is your window to the outside world but can be a severely underexploited resource. The quality of L Pearce Home Improvements’ showroom perfectly showcases our products in a clean, contemporary setting. The attention to detail is evident at every level and we are delighted that it is already proving successful for them.” www.stellaraluminium.co.uk

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT We’re nurturing them carefully – giving our experienced engineers time and space to train them on jobs where we know they are likely to learn and practice their skills and allowing them to work on the second-hand machines in our workshop without any time pressures.

Emmegi’s two apprentices training in the company’s Coventry workshop

No Such Thing As A Quick Fix

By Wayne Hunter, Operations Manager, Emmegi (UK)

However, while it’s not a quick fix, there is hope in the form of tailored apprenticeships for young engineers. We know that what both machinery suppliers and fabricators need are more experienced, time-served engineers who have learnt their trade in this industry. So, at Emmegi (UK), we’re putting our money where our mouth is.

They are obviously learning much more than mechanical and electrical engineering with us. The key to a successful apprenticeship, as I see it, is that youngsters are immersed in a positive work culture and also learn the softer life skills such as time management and customer communication. As a global business, Emmegi undoubtedly has some inherent advantages when it comes to recruiting and retaining engineers. There are lots of opportunities here for travel and progression and the chance to work with the very latest software to learn tech skills as well.

It’s no secret that the industry wide skills shortage is probably most acute in the machinery sector. Competition for skilled service engineers is fiercer than ever – and not just between different machinery suppliers. The problem has been exacerbated by the boom in automated warehousing which we’ve seen particularly since the start of the pandemic, with the likes of Amazon and Ocado creating thousands of extra well-paid engineering jobs and emptying the talent pool even further.

Both our apprentices will complete their four-year college courses in 2022 and we anticipate that they will be ready to service machines on their own during the course of this year. In 2023, the plan is that they will move onto installation and repair jobs unsupervised, but with the full support of the whole team here.

Wayne Hunter

We’ve got two young trainees learning their trade with us under the government’s much lauded apprenticeship scheme and we’re giving them the kind of training and work experience which will hopefully make them both want to stay with us and, just as importantly, in this industry, long term. At 22 and 23 years old, Dan and Will are both getting a mix of practical and college-based training which will see them acquire first an NVQ in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and then, in time, an HND and potentially even a degree.

84 WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022

We haven’t chosen the apprenticeship route as an alternative to hiring experienced engineers either; and all of those benefits apply equally no matter what stage in your career you join us. Like every business that makes a real investment in training though, we’re aware of the fact that our engineers could potentially move to a different supplier at some point. However, we take the view that every supplier should be doing their bit to address the skills shortage and that increasing the talent pool is not just good for us but good for the wider industry as well. www.emmegi.com

GGF’s Beedel Addresses Minister At

vider cost of £4,000, the other 50% being covered by the GGF member.

Chris Beedel, director of government advocacy for the Glass & Glazing Federation (GGF) addressed a kick-off event organised by the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) for the launch of National Apprentice Week, which was attended by Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Minister Lee Rowley MP. The NHIC is the umbrella organisation for the UK, repair, maintenance and home improvement sector, for which the GGF is a member organisation representing the interests of the replacement window, door and related products industry. Chris Beedel, who represents the glass and glazing industry to government departments and other stakeholders, was one of several speakers invited to address the event.

Sanitaryware manufacturer Ideal Standard hosted the launch of National Apprentice Week, which runs from 7th – 13th February and for which the aim is to promote and celebrate the value, benefit, and opportunity that apprenticeships bring. The theme for NAW22 is “Build the Future” and Minister for Industry Lee Rowley MP chose to open the week by meeting apprentices from the home improvement sector, seen as being key to the government’s “build back better” and “levelling up” campaigns. The Minister met apprentices from all parts of the repair, maintenance and home improvements sectors and said: “It’s encouraging to hear the positive stories from these apprentices, but I am acutely aware of the need to increase capacity in the home improvement sector and am looking forward to working with the NHIC and its members to find ways of doing just that.”

Afterwards Chris Beedel commented: “It is crucial that we are able to ensure that the voice of the Chris used the opportunity to high- glazing industry is communicated light the newly launched GGF Apto government ministers and other prenticeship Scheme, with the first influential partner organisations. cohort of apprentices due to start This is especially important with the in April 2022. Network

Building Our Skills – Making Fenestration, Glass and Glazing a Career of Choice is expanding its national network of practical training centres with the addition of two new academy sites. The first is via a partnership with BUILD training, located near Heathrow airport, and the other through collaboration with Glass & Fenestration Training Solutions (GFTS) in Cornwall. The expansion of the delivery network for practical training follows quickly after the acquisition by Building Our Skills of the digital assets and course content of Profitter which includes a range of courses including an introduction to fenestration for beginners, intermediate and advanced courses, along with specialist opportunities and surveying. BUILD is an independent training provider, working with learners of a broad range of ages from sixteen up to seventy-five to facilitate their entry into the construction sector. Commenting on its partnership with Building Our Skills, BUILD’s head of centre, Marcia Wootton and Jane Gunn, BUILD’s head of construction jointly stated: “It’s great to be part of the Building Our Skills ‘family’. The aims of BOS and BUILD are very much aligned. We’re fans of what BOS is trying to achieve, and hope that we can contribute to this too. We’re passionate about the fenestration industry, and want to help address the skills gap from which it is suffering. In particular, we can help to encourage younger people into the industry by ensuring they see the real career opportunities it presents.” www.buildingourskills.co.uk or through www.profitter.org.uk

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT Commenting on its Accredited Training service, GQA’s EQA/ technical officer, Martin Sadler says: “Using our Accredited Training service means that employers can develop their own training to suit their employees or their customers’ needs with the GQA stamp of approval to show the quality of the training delivered. The GQA-branded certificate we offer is an important tool and highlights the third party endorsement we bring. We can also help to develop specific courses in the consultation phase of our collaboration.”

GQA Helps AluK

Achieve Training Accreditation A great example of the way that GQA’s ‘Accredited Training’ service operates is work done recently with AluK, specialists in the design and testing of aluminium products for the fenestration industry. When AluK wished to achieve third party accreditation for its training courses the company turned to this specialist service from the fenestration industry’s awarding and qualifications-writing organisation. GQA’s Accredited Training service is aimed at employers in the industry who want to have their in-house training endorsed by GQA Qualifications and gives them the opportunity to deliver training that focuses on candidates’ particular needs specific to their role with the employer. Darren Burford, training manager of the ‘AluK Academy’ explains: “The AluK Academy pre-

sents workshops in fabrication, installation, product awareness and the use of the company’s design system called ‘Logikal’. GQA has provided third party accreditation for the workshops and our training days. The organisation offers a professional service, providing invaluable guidance and support, especially in the development of our training programmes. I would say GQA is a real advocate for the aluminium industry. Its auditing process ensures that all of our courses are consistent, and GQA has helped us get to where we are today as a GQA Accredited Training Centre. “The fact that the organisation offers recognised qualifications and is one of the few bodies specialising in the fenestration industry made this a good fit for us. The whole process of working with GQA, right from the outset, was a true partnership.”

86 WINDOW NEWS | FEBRUARY 2022

In addition to its Accredited Training service, GQA also offers one in ‘Bespoke Qualification’. Together, the two specialist services are helping the fenestration industry to develop training solutions tailored to the specific needs of employers and their staff. The two initiatives mean that employers can create and accredit in-house developed training courses and learning programmes in addition to utilising existing qualifications. GQA’s Bespoke Qualification service is aimed at employers who wish to be able to offer those staff and customers undertaking very specific roles the opportunity to work towards gaining a qualification where one does not already exist. The service is perfect for niche specialist areas, which do not lend themselves to meeting the required content of a standard regulated qualification. GQA has close to 200 qualifications covering a broad variety of sectors. The fenestration industry, just like any other, needs training solutions tailored to its specific needs. The organisation’s services are helping to facilitate this, and are contributing to raising standards and assisting in shaping careers. www.gqaqualifications.com

Glazerite Highlights Key Role Of Its Apprentices

site. Mia, 19, who joined Glazerite after sixth form, says: “I knew that university wasn’t the right path for me. I wanted to continue to learn and work towards more qualifications however, so an apprenticeship was very appealing. “It has enabled me to learn new skills, and I’ve become much more confident in my abilities. Being able to actually put my learning into practice in a working environment has really helped as I’ve been able to learn so much about the industry first-hand. I’m really enjoying my new role as a customer advisor; it shows what opportunities are out there and I would definitely encourage more people to consider an apprenticeship.” Mia welcomes the encouragement and support she’s received from her Glazerite colleagues during her studies, and both she and Amanda have been praised by their line managers and the fabricator’s directors for their commitment to self-development, their roles, and the business itself.

7th-13th February 2022 marks National Apprenticeship Week, an annual celebration of apprentices and the difference they can make to UK businesses. In recognition of the event, the Glazerite UK Group is highlighting the contribution made by two of its own employees who have been through the fabricator’s apprentice route. Company accountant, Amanda Newman, is currently undertaking her Level 4 CIMA apprenticeship. Based at Glazerite’s head office in Wellingborough, 56-year-old Amanda seized the opportunity to further her training via an apprenticeship. She says: “Though it does feel harder studying as an adult, I am really lucky to have been given the opportunity,

and I’ve been well supported by Glazerite. It has been challenging at times, but it’s really helped me to fill in the gaps in my knowledge, much of which had been previously ‘self-taught.’” Amanda adds: “The apprenticeship has made me feel better able to carry out my role and love my job even more. I want to continue to challenge myself and develop even more skills. I’ve proved that it’s never too late to learn and it is always worth giving it your best shot, whatever your age.” Mia Harrison has just completed her Customer Service Level 3 apprenticeship with a distinction and is now a trainee customer advisor at the fabricator’s Wellingborough

HR advisor, Laura Rorke, who started her human resources career as a Glazerite apprentice knows first-hand the benefits the scheme brings. She says: “I was able to combine my CIPD management qualification while learning on the job; getting handson experience and putting theory into practice is such a great way to learn and develop a career. Mia has really blossomed in the time she’s been with us; it’s great to see her grow in confidence, successfully complete her apprenticeship and start her new role. “Amanda is also a fantastic resource and has demonstrated that the apprenticeship route is not just for school leavers. It’s an ideal route for those of any age who want to gain a recognised qualification or switch careers.” www.glazerite.co.uk

Victorian Sliders Supports

Worthy Causes With £10K Charity Donation

Sash window specialists Victorian Sliders have begun 2022 by supporting two extremely worthy causes.

In place of the Christmas gifts they would usually send to their customers, the South Wales firm has donated £5,000 to Ty Hafan’s children hospice, and £5,000 to ABF – The Soldier’s Charity. One of Britain’s leading paediatric palliative care charities, Ty Hafan

offers comfort, care and support to life-limited children throughout Wales.

This support can be in the hospice, in the community or at home, and gives parents and carers a chance to relax and recharge their batteries. Formerly the Army Benevolent Fund, ABF is a national charity established to support both serving soldiers and veterans of the British

However, the fantastic service offered by both charities comes at a cost – Ty Hafan has to raise over £4.5m every year to stay operational, while last year ABF’s expenditure was £8.3m. “Throughout the pandemic, thousands of fantastic charities supporting people across the country have struggled to raise vital funds,” comments Victorian Sliders marketing manager Geoff Bishop. “That’s why, this year, we decided to do our bit to help Ty Hafan and ABF continue their incredible work. On behalf of ourselves and our valued customers, we’ve made donations which we hope will help both organisations make life better for dozens more people around the country. “If you’d like to do the same, please visit the Ty Hafan and ABF websites – http://tyhafan.org and https://soldierscharity.org”
