What is omakase?

Roughly translated as I leave it up to you, omakase is a menu-free form of Japanese dining. Sophisticated sushi customers simply utter the word “omakase” when sitting down, giving the chef control over which sushi plates are presented.

A Beginner’s Guide to

Seahawks Games

Another football season is upon us! Root for your favorite home team this year as the Seahawks look to take the league by storm and make another playoff run. The 12s are known for their die-hard team spirit. We decorate our homes with our cherished Hawks gear, wear our favorite player’s jersey on Blue Friday, and get together on gameday to cheer as loud as we can from kickoff until the clock runs out. But anyone who’s been to a game knows there’s no experience like seeing the Seahawks live and in person. Whether you’ve already bought tickets or are still considering going to a game this year, it pays to prepare to make the most of your day at Lumen Field. Here’s how to plan for game day!

Parking & Transportation

Lumen Field sits in Seattle’s SoDo neighborhood, about a mile south of downtown. Making up the city’s industrial district, SoDo is full of warehouses, shops, and storefronts of all kinds. Depending on the game, Lumen Field can seat anywhere from 68,000 to 72,000 fans at capacity. Accordingly, there are massive crowds all flocking to the area at the same time, so if you’re driving, it pays to know where to park ahead of time. There are two main parking areas at the stadium: the North Lot and the Lumen Field Garage. Both contain 2,000 parking spaces and cost between $20 and $40 depending on the game.

Instead of driving, consider using a rideshare app to drop you near the stadium. The ease of getting dropped off and picked up without getting caught in the postgame parking lot traffic may just be worth it. You can also take the Sound Transit Light Rail directly to the stadium. The Light Rail line runs as far north as

Game Day

Once Lumen Field is in sight, your inner 12th fan will be brimming with excitement! Keep the following tips in mind to get through the gates hassle-free. The gates open two hours prior to the game, but if you want to arrive earlier, there are restaurants, breweries, and bars nearby where you can spend time with some fellow fans. Brushing up on Lumen Field’s clear bag policy will help avoid hang-ups in line. The stadium only allows clear bags 12” x 6” x 12” or smaller and one-gallon clear plastic freezer bags. No clear backpacks are allowed, and each clear bag may have one clear pocket only.

The vendors and booths inside Lumen Field do not accept cash. If you don’t want to use your debit or credit card, there are ten reverse ATM machines throughout the stadium that will take your cash and transfer it onto a card generated by the machines. There are no transaction fees, and you can load up to $1,500 on each card. Consult the stadium’s informational resources to find the cash-to-card kiosks near your section. For premium game day experiences like sideline access, special video board messages, and more, check out the “Experiences” section on the Seahawks website. Once you’ve made it to your seat, all that’s left to do is enjoy what is truly one of the greatest in-person experiences in all of sports. Go Hawks!

Northgate and as far south as Angle Lake (south of SeaTac), so those outside the city limits can catch the train closer to home. For those who live elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest, the Amtrak Cascades train service stops right next to the stadium, picking up passengers from Portland to Bellingham and beyond. Buy your Amtrak tickets in advance of the game you’re attending.

If you’re a tailgater, you’ll need to factor some additional information into your pre-game plans. Tailgating at Lumen Field is only permitted in the North Lot and only on specific dates. Your vehicle, chairs, and other tailgating equipment mustn’t spill over into other parking spaces, and only propane grills are allowed (no charcoal, no fires). There’s a full stop on tailgating activities 15 minutes after the game’s scheduled start time and the North Lot closes two hours after the game is over.

OAK HARBOR MUSIC FESTIVAL

Head up to the tranquil terrain of Whidbey Island the first weekend in September for one of the state’s most revered music festivals. This year’s lineup is filled with talent from across the musical spectrum, including indie, folk, blues, and classical acts. See live bluegrass bands like Deadwood Revival, listen to classical and Flamenco guitarist Andre Feriante, and watch the kids take the stage with the Teen Talent Showcase on Sunday. The festival culminates in a performance by Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown, who have toured the world opening for such legendary acts as AC/DC and Guns N’ Roses.

Nothing says autumn like a classic state fair. This year, the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe turns 114! This year’s theme, “Little Moments, Big Memories!” reflects what we love most about a day at the fair: all those little moments among the crowds, reconnecting with a piece of the simple life. Grab an elephant ear, go see the cows in the dairy barn, hop on a carnival ride, and watch some amazing concerts. Speaking of the fair, it’s time for another trip to the Washington State Fair in Puyallup! With roller coasters, farm-life experiences, tasty fair cuisine, and prizes aplenty, this fair is perhaps the biggest doozy of them all! A couple of musts here: face painting and scones. And on top of all the activities, the live entertainment is top-notch. Some of the biggest names in country music and comedy will be coming through the Washington State Fair gates this year, including Zac Brown Band and Jeff Foxworthy. Get your tickets now!

GIG HARBOR FILM FESTIVAL

Film buffs unite! Washington State’s destination film festival returns this September to delight theatergoers from far and wide. Held at the state-of-theart Galaxy Theater, the festival features a smorgasbord of different categories including independent, feature length, narrative, documentary, and animated films. Since it began in 2007, it has grown into one of the premier film festivals in the region. Connect with fellow cinema lovers while you explore the surrounding Gig Harbor area, filled with restaurants, cafes, and bars. These days, the GHFF hosts over 80 filmmakers and screens more than 100 films to an audience of over 4,000. There’s always something to see here!

ANACORTES – FIDALGO BAY DAY

Gather up the gang and head to Anacortes the last weekend in August for a special event at the Samish Indian Nation’s Fidalgo Bay Resort. Crowds flock here every year to get an up-close look at marine life. Stop by the Shannon Point Marine Center’s undersea zoo to touch live sea critters, let the kids’ imaginations run wild at the arts and crafts tables, and take in the stunning Samish indigenous art on display. An annual fixture since 2004, this is a summertime event the whole family will love.

Seattle’s favorite live music festival turns 50 this year! With a jam-packed itinerary of art and music, you can’t help but have a full schedule both days. What can you expect at this year’s festival? Roller skating, wrestling, witches, and drag, for starters. There will be performance art, augmented reality exhibitions, extreme pogo-sticking, and a cat circus. And that’s just the beginning! Bumbershoot is known for its ability to get some of the world’s top recording artists on stage at the Seattle Center, and this year will be no different. We can’t think of a better way to spend Labor Day weekend than at this legendary festival.

With another autumn comes another round of Oktoberfest celebrations! The Pacific Northwest hosts numerous Germaninspired festivals this time of year, but few have the lasting impact of Kirkland’s very own Oktoberfest. Down at the Kirkland Marina you’ll find music, games, competitions, and lots of beer! Try your hand at keg rolling in between DJ sets, grab a full or half pour as you watch bands take the stage, and celebrate German tradition with your beer-drinking companions.

Proudly hailed as “the wurst three days of the year,” this is one biergarten you do not want to miss. This event is 21+ and allows dogs on Sunday, the 24th.
