Design, Artwork and Quotation Services At ThermapplyTM we have a dedicated design department onhand to help you develop your specific projects. Whether you are designing a playground/community project, or else a bespoke presentation that features onsurface signage we can help. From the simple sign to the more intricate logos and surface decor we will take your designs and convert them into a format that can be reproduced as thermoplastic works of art. Quite simply there are very few designs or motifs that cannot be reproduced in a thermoplastic format (see Design Services) If you have a specific requirement for a bespoke marking such as a logo, welcome sign or corporate design simply send it to us via our website. Attach your PDF or JPEG file with the required dimensions and we will provide you with a quotation within 24 hours. All bespoke marking requests are subject to sight of design.
Manufacturing Service All playground products featured within the catalogue section of this brochure are available ‘off the shelf’ and are delivered within 7 days of receiving your order and payment, however any bespoke designs are firstly re-artworked, sent to you for approval and once approved are manufactured and delivered within 10 working days of order and payment having been received. All orders are dispatched in a protective box, complete with installation instructions and anti-slip glass bead.
Training Service For those of you who want to install your own thermoplastic markings, and you are new to the product, it is important that you receive full training in all aspects of the product, surface types, design layout and installation procedures. To this end we insist on training before we allow our products to be installed by ‘first time’ or inexperienced installers. Although installation is a relatively simple process, there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration prior to any installation taking place. At ThermapplyTM we offer a comprehensive training programme which covers all aspects of the installation procedure which, once completed will allow you to become a registered and certificated installer of ThermapplyTM products in your area. (see The Training Schedule).
Installation and Site Survey Services At ThermapplyTM we also offer an installation service for those organisations who prefer to sub-contract their installations. Should you wish to take advantage of this service, irrespective of size or complexity, our fully trained and knowledgeable staff are on hand to carry out the necessary task. We offer standard guarantees on all installations undertaken by our staff. We are also on hand to carry out pre-installation site surveys which identify any potential obstacles which might prevent a successful installation. (see The Site Survey Form)
Our Guarantees to You Our guarantee to you is that your product will be delivered to you within 7 working days of your order having been placed and paid for in full. The product will be packed to avoid damage and will contain all the necessary components for you to be able to successfully install the product. The industry standard guarantee on this type of product once installed is 12 months against ‘Lifting’. Lifting means that the product has become detached from the surface due to poor installation. Lifting only occurs if moisture is trapped under the material so it is important that the product is installed on a dry day. Although the guarantee of 12 months does not seem to be a great deal, it actually is. This guarantee term allows the product to go through a 12 month weather cycle, and as a result when the product remains attached to the surface for the 12 month period, it will certainly retain its integrity for a period of 58 years or more.

Training Services To be entitled to install ThermapplyTM products either you or a member of your organisation must have been trained in the application of the product. There are two aspects to our training programme; the Theory and the Practical. Training can take place at any time of the year and can either be booked through the web site or else by telephone. There is a maximum of four delegates to be trained at any one time. The Theory side of the training consists of half a day in a classroom environment either at ThermapplyTM Head Office in Cheshire or else at a convenient venue of your choice. During the classroom session we discuss all the factors that will affect your installation which include: The site survey, quotations and drawings, customer liaison, health and safety assessments, risk management, the weather, the surface condition, the material properties, the design layout, the tools required, the planning, the actual installation, the products and the anti slip procedures. The Practical side of training can either be covered at our training centre in Cheshire alongside the Theory or on-site at your customers installation. A ThermapplyTM member(s) of staff will head up your installation and will demonstrate how to correctly install your products, drawing on the theory discussions from the theory training session. Once the installation is complete questions and answers will take place, and if satisfied with the days events ThermapplyTM will issue a certificate of competence which will enable the nominated trainee(s) to install ThermapplyTM products in future installations unassisted. Although the training offered by ThermapplyTM is extremely comprehensive, it is reasonable to say that there may be instances during your future installations, where advice needs to be sought. It is for this reason that we have set up an advice hotline where someone will be on hand to offer

help and guidance should it be necessary. ThermapplyTM products are extremely permanent once installed, they are virtually impossible to remove from the surface without incurring substantial costs. If you are in any doubt prior to, or during an installation regarding a matter that could hinder your progress do not hesitate to call the Advice Hotline on 01625 827527.
As you will be responsible for any guarantees you offer to your customer after installation, it is advisable to assess both the surface type and the surface condition prior to any installation taking place. It is safe to say that markings applied to a new tarmac surface will last much longer than those applied to an old surface or one that is starting to degrade and may be suffering from moss infestation or root damage.

The prices quoted on our web site are always current and are before any discounts. Discounts are be applied on a volume basis or by frequency of orders. How To Order Bespoke Markings and Logos Once you have submitted your designs, and we have provided you with a quotation and a drawing, we will assign a project number to your request and will post your project on the website www.thermapply.co.uk in order that you may place your order. Simply go to your account, select your project and submit your order.
How To Pay For Your Markings All orders placed on the ThermapplyTM web site will be charged at the time of placing your order. Please follow the necessary steps in order to complete your purchase. ThermapplyTM regret that it cannot give refunds on any bespoke products purchased due to the individual nature of the product, however on standard items we operate a buy back policy should the product remain unused, in its packaging and totally free from damage. The buy back policy is a conditional offer and includes the cost of returning the unused item.
A Brief Guide to Thermoplastic Installation This section aims to give you a simple and brief overview of some of the factors that should be considered when either planning or carrying out any installation. It further explains how products are created by the use of ‘Levels’ and looks at what factors need to be taken into account during the installation process.
The Site Survey and Site Survey Form In our experience, it is very useful to carry out a site survey prior to any installation for a variety of reasons. You can establish the type of surface you are dealing with, and get a feel for the available space where the marking(s) might be installed. It is also a good opportunity to make a note of any permanent objects such as buildings, play equipment, wooden structures, plastic grids, soft or rubber surfaces that will affect the positioning of your markings. Thermapply products are manufactured to be installed on a Tarmac surface ideally, however the markings can be applied to other surfaces such as concrete, paving slabs and bricketts, by first applying a specific surface primer. The primer is available from Thermapply Limited should you require it for your installation. TM
The Thermoplastic Material Properties All ThermapplyTM products are manufactured from preformed ‘thermoplastic’ material which means, by definition that its physical property is affected by temperature. During the winter months this product is extremely fragile and if dropped or mistreated, will shatter into thousands of pieces. (Do not drop, throw, walk on or do anything that is likely to cause breakage). During winter treat this material with great care when handling and installing. During the warmer months of the year this material becomes very flexible and as a result does not require the same amount of consideration while handling, however care should always be taken when handling and installing the material and products.
We would advise that any guarantees you offer regarding longevity of your markings take the surface condition into account at the planning stage of your project. Markings can always be renewed or revitalised at any stage We at ThermapplyTM currently use a surface grading system that operates from A1- C2 as follows; A1- Brand New Surface* A2- 1-3 Years old with no surface distortion B1- 3-5 Years old with minor surface distortion B2- 5-10 Years old with minor surface distortion C1- 10 Years plus with surface damage C2-10 Years plus with surface damage and moss infestation *Always be aware that installing these products on a brand new surface may well lead to bitumen leaking through your marking due to the heat. It is always advisable to leave a new surface for 3-4 weeks to settle prior to any installation. Service Packs - One to Four When you submit your first order you will be encouraged to purchase one of four ‘Service Packs’ available. These service packs contain either spare sheet, spare lines, spare numbers and letters or else a combination of all components. They are extremely useful for minor repairs and unforseen eventualities. It is advised that you carry your service kits each time you attend an installation. Further details of the service kits available can be found on the website.

We have selected a series of tools and equipment that compliment our installations and we keep a limited number of each item in stock. All are available to purchase via the web site.

Product Levels Logos, Motifs and Playground Markings
Installation Instruction Symbols Each Thermapply product has its own installation instruction leaflet which comes with the product in its box. On each of these leaflets the following symbols appear, the meaning of each symbol is explained below: TM
All ThermapplyTM products have a ‘Level’ associated with them. The ‘Level’ refers to the number of layers that a product is made up from, and in the illustration below you can clearly see how these levels are made up. The Whitlebury Logo is a ‘level 3’ product because it is applied in three stages. Firstly the large green background with its gold boarder, secondly the owl body and branch detail, and finally the feather detail. HIT

‘Level 1’ of a ThermapplyTM marking always forms the main body of the marking and usually consists of squares, sections or larger areas of solid colour sheet or lines, this is what is known as level 1. Levels 2, 3, and 4 usually indicate that there are numbers, letters, eyes and or other features to be added to the marking in order to achieve the correct results. Some Thermapply markings have as many as five levels. It is important that each time a new level is added to the marking it is allowed to cool to ambient temperature prior to adding each new level. If the marking is not allowed to cool sufficiently prior to adding new levels, you run the risk of the new level sticking to the marking permanently, and if it is not in its correct position your marking may well be ruined. It is important to remember to sprinkle glass bead on all levels so that the completed marking’s anti-slip properties are maintained to their maximum level. (see Glass Bead) TM

You will need a tape measure for this installation. (A 30m tape measure is always useful to have) When adding new levels to your marking, be aware that in 90% of occasions you will be installing ‘Plastic on Plastic’, so the required exposure to direct heat from the torch is vastly reduced. You need only heat levels 2, 3, 4 and 5 for approximately 3-5 seconds at normal pressure in order to successfully install these elements and remember to keep the torch high so these components ‘Sit Down’ on the marking prior to fully heating them to conclusion.
You will need a compass for this installation. You will need chalk for this installation. (Builders or French chalk is ideal as it is hard wearing) You will need string for this installation. (50m reals are always useful to have in your tool box)
Planning your Installation Date
You will need nails for this installation. (Masonery nails are ideal)
It is our experience that correct planning of your installation date will save you time and money. It is always advisable to get a local weather forecast for the region where your installation is to take place and if there is even a 20% chance of rain or showers, it is wise to postpone your installation.
You will need a stanley knife for this installation Using the roofing torch, apply heat to your marking in a steady and methodical fashion.
The Weather and its Effect on Installations The weather and moisture in particular, will prevent you from installing ThermapplyTM products. These products cannot be installed if it is raining or the surface is damp. If the weather is good but the surface is damp due to early morning dew, overnight rain etc, it is perfectly acceptable to ‘Force Dry’ the surface area with your propane torch. If this procedure is carried out, please take care to allow the surface to cool to ambient temperature prior to placing or laying out the marking on the newly dried surface. Avoid trapping any condensation under the marking by allowing the forced dry area to breath and cool to ambient temperature. It is not always practical to ‘Force Dry’ an area. If you are laying large items such as courts or exercise lines, you are better off waiting for the surface to dry naturally. If you lay out your marking prior to installation, and it rains, do not attempt to install the marking. As quickly as you can, return your marking to its packaging and store in a dry place.
Sprinkle glass bead on the marking immediatly after applying the heat and once the thermoplastic material is molten and bubbling.
Gas The Thermoplastic material we use to manufacture all ThermapplyTM products requires that you use ONLY Propane gas during any installation. We would recommend that you use the 19kg bottles of Propane gas as they are widely available from most Calor retail outlets.
Installation Principals You should firstly remove your marking from its box and separate the components into the order of installation. Once satisfied, lay out ‘Level 1’ of your marking on the surface in its correct position making sure that the area has been swept and is free of dust and debris. Make sure that all subsequent levels of the product (numbers, letters, Eyes etc) are well away from the heat source prior to installation. Attach your ‘Roofing Torch’ to the propane gas cylinder and securely connect your roofing torch to the gas bottle using an adjustable spanner. Release the gas from the bottle and set your torch to ‘idle’ using the forward knob on the torch. Turn the regulator to full or 10 (depending on regulator used). Test the trigger - the gas should be expelled from the head of the torch at high pressure, if it is not adjust the setting using the rear knob on the torch (open it fully).
Once the torch is dispensing the gas at high pressure release the trigger, you are now ready to install the marking. Ignite the torch under ‘idle’. Do not attempt to ignite the torch with the trigger depressed. Assume a comfortable position directly above the marking, ensuring that the head of the torch is perpendicular to the marking and at least 4050cm above the marking (see opposite for correct torch head position). Depress the trigger of the torch and gently heat the marking with a gentle back and forth, left to right action gradually working your way down the marking as illustrated (see illustration). Once at the bottom of the marking, return to the top of the marking and repeat this process. It may take as many as 6 passes before the marking starts to bubble and becomes molten. Always keep the roofing torch moving to avoid scorching your marking.

As you continue with the installation you must always watch the surface of the marking. You will see the surface of the marking start to ripple as it becomes almost liquid. A sure sign of correct installation will be the appearance of small air bubbles coming through the material. It is at this point that marking is properly installed. At the point at which each level of the thermoplastic becomes liquid, apply a generous sprinkling of Glass Bead (provided) to the entire surface of the marking. (see Glass Bead section)

Glass Bead Glass bead is supplied with all Thermapply markings. It is an extremely integral part of the whole installation as it will create an Anti-Slip surface on the marking. If a marking is installed and the glass bead is not applied at the correct intervals during installation your marking will lose some of it’s anti-slip properties and may cause you problems in the future as the only way to rectify this once a marking has been installed is to replace the entire marking. TM
The head of the torch is incorrectly positioned so you run the risk of ‘flipping’ the marking over on itself when you depress the torch trigger because the flame is being directed at pressure underneath the marking, so as the material softens it may flip over. If the material flips, stop immediately and use your ‘Service Pack’ to rectify the problem. (see Service Pack) Fig 1

If you install your marking and then allow it to cool without first applying the glass bead it is not advisable to attempt to reheat the marking as it will almost certainly scorch and seriously discolour. The glass been should be applied liberally to your marking when you have sufficiently heated the material so that it is molten and bubbling otherwise the glass bead will not adhere and the marking will become slippery in wet conditions. The second image Fig 2 illustrates the correct position of the torch head in relation to the surface and the product. Any heat and pressure from the torch will be aimed directly at the surface of the product and provided you are carrying out the installation in appropriate weather conditions there is little no risk of flipping the product.
Making repairs to flipped markings Repairs to a flipped marking or component should take place immediately as once the marking has cooled and set it will be virtually impossible to put right.
Flippers or Flipping During the process of Installing your markings it is important to be aware of the risk of ‘Flipping’. Flipping occurs when the flame from the roofing torch is not perpendicular to the surface of the marking at a height of approximately 40-50cm. Essentially the heat from the torch gets underneath the thermoplastic, which will be changing its status from solid to liquid due to the heat, and will cause it to rise suddenly and fall back on itself. This action of flipping requires immediate repair before you can continue with the rest of the installation.
Repairs are easy, simply cut away the damaged area with a sharp blade and remove all traces of the damaged product. Using a suitable piece of spare sheet cut the necessary shape and trim off any overlaps. Place the component correctly and proceed with the installation as normal. Any seams that you might have will disappear as the material becomes molten.
Playground Designs & Layout Services At ThermapplyTM we provide a complete and comprehensive playground design service which includes a site survey, satellite drawing and competitive quotation based on the drawing supplied. We are happy to discreetly represent your organisation when visiting the schools for the purposes of the site survey. Once completed we submit all our findings along with the drawings and quotation to you in order that you may provide your quotation direct to your customer. Our quotation to you carries three prices. The first is a competitive market price for each marking proposed, the second is our ‘In The Box’ price to you for each of the markings proposed and the third is a price for our team to carry out the installation on your behalf, giving you the flexibility and options to tailor the quotation so it best suits your needs. All quotations are valid for a period of 90 days. During the site survey, our experienced staff are always looking for the opportunity to make best use of any space available. It is for this reason that your drawing and quotation will illustrate far more markings than your customer might require. From our experience it is better to include more markings on the drawing than your customer would probably require as this serves two purposes, the first being to illustrate the full potential of the available space, and the
second to tempt the customer to place a larger order as quite often when the potential is realised the budgets are increased.
Drawings and Available Artwork If you have your own design capability such as a Macintosh Computer or PC using a CAD package, we can supply you with all our markings on a disk to help you with your own playground designs and quotations. All files are available as JPEG, TIFF, SVG, PDF, DWG or DXFs files. The illustrations above show an actual proposal and part of the completed playground. The following pages illustrate the range of playground markings available as ‘off the shelf’ items. Details of prices and delivery are all available on our web site www.thermapply.co.uk.
Flipping can also occur if you try to install your marking in high wind conditions. An example of the ‘right and wrong’ way of applying heat to your product is illustrated opposite. The torch head in Fig 1 is in the wrong position ie. not perpendicular to the surface of the marking.
