Laura’s year culminated with the 96th Department Convention at the Madison Marriott West in Middleton. I wish to acknowledge the Auxiliary staff, the Legion Headquarters staff, the Legion Family of Madison #501, and the Madison Marriott West Hotel for making this a successful event. The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) was pleased to have top notch speakers such as Major General Dunbar, WDVA Secretary John Scocos, Curtiss Peck of Fisher House Wisconsin, Major Patrice Walgenbach who is a Critical Care Air Transport Nurse, and 2016 ALA Badger Girls State Governor Bhakti Anbarasan. Honored Past Department President Kay Arndt reflected on her year as president in 2001-2002 during the PPP Luncheon. Wisconsin also proudly endorsed PDP Diane Duscheck for National President in 2017-2018. Curtiss Peck shared experiences of some families staying at the Fisher House located on the grounds of Zablocki VAMC. Since Fisher House Wisconsin was part of President Laura’s special project, she presented a check for $1,057.21 and a new
computer from the many generous donations made by Auxiliary members and units around the state. Major Walgenbach showed a video demonstrating the work of a Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT). Each CCATT cares for up to four critical care patients on medical flights that range from 16-23 hours. From January-July 2014, CCATT completed over 197 missions with more than 2,500 patient transfers. Major Walgenbach was personally involved with two missions; one transported wounded military service members from Afghanistan to Germany and one transported patients and their family members, including a young child, from Germany to Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland. Major Walgenbach’s compelling presentation emphasized her mission, which mirrors the Auxiliary’s mission – to honor the service of our military and their families. Although many units and individuals are worthy of recognition, Laura Calteux presented five Department President’s Awards for Excellence for those who demonstrated their support and accomplishments for the goals of the Centennial Strategic Plan. The convention closed with the installation of new district and department officers. President Laurel DuBois’s theme
for the upcoming year is “Soaring For Our Veterans” in honor of her father’s service during World War II as a pilot with the Screaming Eagles. So…SOAR PROUDLY to show the community who we are, what we do and why we make a difference! President Laurel DuBois, newly elected Commander Dan Seehafer, and Detachment Commander Mike Kollmansberger challenged each other to see who can achieve the highest percentage of membership 30 days prior to the 2017 Department Convention. The winner will enjoy songs by their counterparts, so let’s work hard so we can hear Commander Seehafer crooning to tunes by Johnny Cash! Update your calendars: The 2017 Department Convention has been moved to the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton rather than in Eau Claire as previously planned because The Plaza Hotel was sold recently and is scheduled for demolition later this year. 2017 membership cards were mailed to all units by July 15th. Any unit that has not received a packet should contact Andrea Stoltz at department headquarters immediately. 2017 renewal notices will be mailed by the national organization in mid-September – but renewing members can pay dues to their unit now or online through the national website (www.ALAforVeterans.org). I’m back from Department Convention and writing another “last column.” With the due date immediately following convention, newly-elected President Laurel DuBois asked me to write one more time. Congratulations to Linda Coppock who was elected 2016-2017 Department Chaplain. Thanks again to all who supported me during my term as your spiritual leader. I was humbled and honored to have been on stage with American Legion National Commander Dale Barnett, Department Commander Dale Oatman, Sons of the American Legion National Vice Commander Dennis Henkemeyer, SAL National Chaplain Michael Lawler, SAL Detachment Commander Mike Kollmansberger and American Legion Riders Association President Ray McSherry as they addressed our Auxiliary Convention. It was a great 96th Convention, President Laura and Auxiliary staff! In 2016-2017 The American Legion family will “Soar for Our Veterans” and “Make It Personal.” Ephesians 4:2 Be humble, gentle, and patient always. Show your love by being helpful to one another. This Bible verse reminds me why Susan Wente’s Irish Folk song Make Us True Servants is a favorite of mine. The lyrics of this song promote giving of ourselves to others, having compassion for others, loving others, and breaking down barriers of hatred toward others. These characteristics promote the founding principles of our Auxiliary: Justice, Freedom, Democracy and Loyalty. During my Memorial Service message on Sunday, I shared the lyrics from Taps. Many people don’t realize there are words to this “last call.” Taps was officially recognized by the United States Army in 1874 and is considered an appropriate part of a military funeral. Day is done, gone the sun, from the lakes, from the hills, from the sky. All is well, safely rest, God is nigh. Fading light dims the sight, and a star gems the sky, gleaming bright. From afar, drawing near, falls the night. Thanks and praise for our days, ‘neath the sun, ‘neath the stars, ‘neath the sky. As we go, this we know, God is nigh.

AUXILIARY EMERGENCY FUND LaVon Schurman Department Chairman Ph: 608-996-2575 Email: rumrunner@tds.net Summer has arrived in Wisconsin, bringing with it the usual severe storms, with the accompanying high winds, tornadoes, heavy rains, hail and flooding. Have any members of your unit suffered losses due to the inclement weather? Have unit officers checked to see if their losses are covered by insurance or if they are receiving aid elsewhere? Auxiliary members whose dues are current and who have maintained membership for three consecutive years (the current year and the immediate past two years) are eligible to apply to the Auxiliary Emergency Fund (AEF) at a time of financial crisis. The application process begins in her local unit. Temporary assistance may be considered when: 1) A natural disaster or weather emergency leaves a member
without shelter or food; 2) A financial crisis occurs leaving a member without funds for shelter, food or utilities and no other source of aid is readily available; or 3) In extreme circumstances, educational training is needed for a member lacking the necessary skills for employment. Eligible members seeking emergency assistance apply through their unit; the application is then forwarded to Department, then on to ALA National Headquarters. Emergency assistance grants are reviewed by the Grant Committee on a case by case basis and may be awarded up to a maximum amount of $2,400. AEF funds awarded may only be used for emergency shelter, food, or utilities. AEF funds may not be used for medical expenses or accumulated debts. To ensure the integrity of the program, the National AEF Grant Committee directs payments to the provider, such as a mortgage or utility company. Educational grant payments are di-
rected to the educational institution. National President Sharon Conatser chose AEF as her special project this year and Past Department President Laura Calteux presented her with a check for $4,000 at the winter meeting in Washington, D.C., thanks to your generous donations. The fund was established in 1969, through a bequest of a Burlington member, Helen Colby Small. The fund is able to continue solely through unit and individual donations. Be knowledgeable of the application process in order to help members during their time of need. Hold fundraising activities to benefit AEF. Include AEF information in the “New Member” packets. AEF brochures are available from Department Headquarters and online at www.ALAforVeterans.org. Frequently asked questions and additional information are also available at that website on the AEF page.
CANDIDATE FOR NATIONAL PRESIDENT Endeavoring to be National President is not a venture I could ever do without your support. Units and districts have been quite creative with their fundraising ideas. Pancake breakDIANE DUSCHECK fasts, soup and salad luncheons, raucous auctions, and bidding wars are just a few of the many creative ways funds have been raised. Again, I cannot thank you enough. The District Penny War concluded at Department Convention with boxes and baggies of pennies being added to the penny jars as district members tried to accumulate the most penny points, and silver coins and paper money were used to sabotage their efforts. When the war ended, First District was the Penny Point Winner with 32,620 penny points and Second District was the Most Accumulated Money Winner with a total of $471.21. District Presidents Kitty Larkin (1st District) and Dawn Rudey (2nd District) enthusiastically accepted the shiny Penny War Trophies on behalf of their districts. I’m sure banks are now reporting a glut on pennies as they all get redeposited.
The Holiday Boutique held at Department Convention was a fundraiser for both National President Candidate Diane Duscheck and National Commander Candidate Denise Rohan. The Legion Family shopped for items that would brighten at least six different holidays. Legionnaires purchased teddy bears for grandchildren and Auxiliary members added to their collection of holiday decorations. Proceeds are being divided equally between both campaigns. 600 Club tickets, available for $50 each, also support both candidates. Tickets can be purchased from either campaign team; only 600 tickets will be sold. Winners will be
drawn at The American Legion Fall Meetings in October 2016. 600 Club donations for both candidates’ campaigns (made out to “600 Club”) and personal donations to support National President Candidate Diane (made out to “National Candidate Fund”) can be sent to: Team Duscheck Treasurer, Diana Sirovina, 9428 W Eden Place, Milwaukee, WI 53228. Your well-wishes and words of encouragement have been overwhelming and so deeply appreciated. And many of you have told me you are keeping me in your prayers; I am most grateful. Thank you.
I began my term as Department Chaplain last summer in the role of wife, helpmate, and round-the-clock nurse for my husband with the hope and belief that things would get better and we would enjoy more than 50 years of marriage. God had other plans for us and we were forced to accept the inevitable. Thank you to Kathy and John, James and Jennifer, our grandchildren Joe, Nick, Toni, Amanda, and Alyssa, our families, friends, neighbors and all American Legion Family members who helped both of us be strong enough to face the end with grace. “They are not dead who live In hearts they leave behind. American Legion Auxiliary Badger Girls State Delores Woolf Executive Director Ph: 608-348-7403 Email: dwoolf@centurytel.net The 73rd session of American Legion Auxiliary Badger Girls State (ALABGS) began with registration on Sunday, June 19th followed by get acquainted sessions in the fourteen cities. Parents were invited to the Fathers Day Brunch as well as the 2:00 pm opening assembly in the Kolf Field House on the University of Wisconsin of Oshkosh campus. Sunday evening 700+ citizens nominated their city officials and voted for them on Monday morning. Newly elected cities were welcomed by Laura Calteux, Wisconsin American Legion Auxiliary Department President. She introduced the National President of the American Legion Auxiliary, Sharon Conatser, who then stayed at the session until Wednesday morning. She gave greetings, observed groups and participated in many of the activities. It was a true honor to have an Illini Girls State Chairman with us who was so knowledgeable of the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program. City pictures were taken on Monday morning in the Kolf Fieldhouse while citizens circulated nomina-
tion papers for state offices. Later that morning the newly elected city officials had their first city meetings and set up commissions. The afternoon was the time to nominate all county, senate and assembly positions for which citizens voted on Tuesday evening. Monday afternoon began the interest groups of physical activity, band, chorus, lobbyists, The View, parliamentary procedure, Badger Tales, multimedia, Americanism, patriotism and women’s issues. Tuesday’s activities included county, senate and assembly elections along with installation of the newly elected officials of the county. The senate and assembly began to write bills. The Federalist and Nationalist political parties had caucuses to adopt their party platforms followed by party rallies. In addition to the state primary election, county meetings, senate and assembly bill writing and city commissions work time, the delegates had a general closing of the day assembly at which the county counselors and county executives were introduced followed by the announcement of the winners of the state primary election. Wednesday highlights included city and county meetings along
with election of the seven state officials. Hearings on bills were held in the seven counties with lobbyists in attendance. An inspirational flag retirement ceremony was presented by The American Legion Riders. Wisconsin American Legion Department Commander Dale Oatman and Badger Boys State Director Fred Berns addressed the citizens. Thursday highlights were the State Fair featuring exhibits of the counties and cities as well as a talent show. The inaugural program was held at 7:00 pm in the Kolf Fieldhouse. Justice Shirley Abrahamson administered the oath of office to the senate, assembly and state officers. Governor Scott Walker addressed those in attendance at the inaugural. The names of the Girls Nation senators who will attend Girls Nation from July 23 through July 30, 2016 in Chevy Chase, Maryland were announced. On Friday the session ended with a senate and assembly session and a career fair followed by a closing assembly. Fifty-eight very dedicated counselors gave their time and talent to contribute to the success of the 2016 ALABGS session. It truly was the 51st state of Badger in action!

Amberg Unit 428: Working the ALA Mission!
Members of Mullany McTrusty American Legion Auxiliary Unit 428 in Amberg presented doubleweight fleece blankets to Camp American Legion Director Kevin Moshea. The Auxiliary members cut and sewed 161 double weight fleece blankets, 112 fleece hats, and 83 pillowcases for homeless or transitional veterans attending Camp the week of June 7th and the Korean and Vietnam veterans attending the week of June 20th. KING DAY 2016: THANK YOU! I want to thank each and every American Legion Auxiliary Unit and Legion Post that contributed to the chicken dinners on Father’s Day for our Veterans here at Wisconsin Veterans Home-King. The day was a great success. Every Veteran was given a wonderful chicken dinner with potato salad, baked beans, bread and butter, cookie,
ice cream and lemonade or coffee. Veterans with dietary restrictions each received a dinner provided by you also. I also invited the Veterans that are staying at the homeless shelter at King to have dinner with us. Several of them did. Please be assured that EVERY VETERAN at King gets a dinner through your donations.

Packers’ President and CEO Mark Murphy and alumni players Sean Jones (96), LeRoy Butler (36) and Robert Brooks (87) were
joined by active players Sam Barrington (58), Jayrone Elliott (91) and Jared Abbrederis (84) for the visit. Inpatients were surprised – and delighted – when the players popped into their rooms to wish them a happy Father’s Day and to thank them for their service to America.
